The River Rats were quite frustrated with missing the playoffs last year and are on a tear, scoring 14 runs against the Waves to spoil the return of baseball to the Golden State. The new pickups in the bullpen were on display, holding down the fort even after a strong attempt by the Waves in the 7th to come back.

In a season where many pundits have wondered if the Pioneers were going to stumble due to the gutting of their famed "Arsenal of Freedom" pitching corps, the coast looks clear so far. Led by their ace Ryan Mansfield, the Pioneers came out swinging against their rivals, with their entire offensive output coming in the 6th inning. But it was more than enough for the Arsenal. Time will tell if the pickups in the draft will continue their depth however.

The home fans were treated to a strong game that was begun by the ring ceremony and the 2013 championship banner flying high in the New Orleans skyline. In a rare game where all three runs were knocked in by solo home runs, the Sternwheelers were unable to back up the strong outing by Ourorobous who had a strong duel with Lou Flynn. But a timely home run by Terry Simpson brought the home team the win.

The Swamp Foxes spoiled the Pikes' inaugural game in their usual flashy style, knccking in three runs in the last two innings to take the game out of the grasp of the Pikes. The Swamp Foxes have seemed to reload their strong bullpen, holding on the game after the inital deficit to lead to give the offense a chance to win.

The new leadership with the Tikis has not slowed down their desire to bring the title to the islands as shown by the strong opening that they employed against the Meadowlarks, knocking in seven runs in the first three innings to start the 2014 season off with a bang.

The inaugural season of the Bombers started fittingly on Canada Day, with fireworks before and after and several Canadian celebreties leading the stadium in "Oh Canada". And the fans were certainly rewarded with a tense and claw-biting game as the home team won their first recorded regular season game with a thrillig home run from Jorge De La Cruz in the 8th to tie it before Genji Mirumoto (BBB/Red Panda/DH) knocked in the winning run.

The Waves came in looking to avenge their opening loss and was held on tight by their bullpen. Rocked hard by a 5 run deficit, they held on strong, chipping away at the Rats' lead until the eight inning. Fueled by a rally, Oliver Crowe (LBW/African Wild Dog/C) hit a single to drive in both the tying and winning run to the delight of fans.

Portland opened their season at Nike Field to another show of offensive prowess, backing young sensaion Keith Veeck as he held the Ravens to two runs, showing the same strong pitching he ended the 2013 season with.

Marietta showed the flash of offense that their fans were desperately hoping for last season, shocking the defending champion Pelicans with two home runs and a small-ball fueled sixth inning that sealed the deal for the Wheelers.

In a tense game without home runs, Winnipeg avenged their opening loss with a back and forth to hold on through a Swamp Foxes' rally in the ninth. Nanu Lycopolis had a strong showing on the field, showing that the Pikes' efforts to upgrade her to a starter including picking her brother Anpu in the expansion to provide a solid battery was a solid decision, at least for the time being.

It was a high-scoring affair in Paradise, although most of the scoring came in a complete collapse in the seventh inning as the Meadowlarks scored nine, burning through three pitchers with two home runs and two doubles to grab the win.

General | Posted 11 years agoHey there FLB fans- I know the opening day was supposed to be up but there was a hangup with getting everything finished. It will be fixed by the morning and we'll only be delayed by a day; this means that July 2 will have the games from July 1 and July 2 posted. Thanks for your patience!

Welcome to the last day of pre-season action! Plenty of action here for fans of the longball; they should certainly settle down once we get into the regular season but we certainly had some fun this week! Tomorrow is going to be a break between the pre-season and the regular season on Tuesday to give the players some time to rest.
Tomorrow is the perfect time to finish looking over your lineup cards and finalizing them for opening day! You'll notice that there is a new column on the sheets; in addition to the "Players Updated" note which shows when the rosters themselves were updated (in the case of any free agent signings or trades), there is now a "Lineup Updated" section which will indicate the last time that you've updated them. I would still appreciate a heads up when you update your lineups but this will be a good indicator. If you already have updated it for the season, please make sure that you fill in the date or that the date is current.
As for your rosters: the deadline for free-agent signings and trades is August 25th.

As the summer heats up, so does anticipation and excitement for the regular season! I've gotten all the lineup cards out for GMs, please make sure that they're filled out by July 1st so I can get them ready for the season (otherwise there may be more chaos ;P)

2014 FLB Amateur Draft Results!
General | Posted 11 years agoGreetings FLB Fans! The big day is here! We were able to successfully have the 2014 draft with all GMs (save one) reporting. Congratulations to Carmella Figueora (C/Capybara/WPG) for going #1 in this year's draft! Please give her a big round of applause. There were interesting twists and turns on the lists, with several of the top 12 falling out of the first round, but all 36 of this year's rookie class with most definitely be seeing playing time in this expansion year!
The rosters will be updated this week so we will be ready for a week of pre-season action from June 23-29th leading up to Opening Day on July 1st!
In other news, the Washington Ravens find themselves needing a temporary GM for the 2014 season. This will be an interim position, and being one of the bedrock teams of the league, they are not looking to move at this time. Please contact the FLB if you're interested in this position.
EDIT: Looks like someone chewed through the cables on this; if I were FBA commish Daniel Sterne I'd be blaming otters on this... A couple of picks were in the wrong place but they're fixed now!

Welcome to the FLB Network's annual report on the upcoming FLB Amateur Draft- there are a lot of good rookies in the pool for the teams and we're all excited to see what they add to the league in this year and future years!
Keep in mind these are our picks for the top 12- but not a guarantee of how they'll come out! Without further ado:
#1 Shadow Hallsworth 2B/3B Siberian Husky- San Francisco, CA
Coming from a wealthy background, Shadow has done his hardest to prove that his talent is natural instead of bought.
Taking the route of public school rather than the private curcuit, Shadow has crushed it so far, and declared right out of high school for the draft.
Shadow is a solid all-around player in the infield, sure to challenge the likes of Alejandro Coyotl and Luis Marquez fairly quickly for high offensive marks, as well as being a solid glove.
#2 Cindy Lutrai SP North American River Otter- Oceanside, CA
Cindy was born and raised on the California coast. Her first passion was surfing but stated to get into baseball when she was 9. Since then she has become a great pitcher for her Jr. High and High School Baseball teams, racking up K's and shutouts thanks to her deadly curveball. Cindy is ranked by many FLB magazines as the top prospect- pitching or otherwise- this year.
#3 Tommy Fields OF Coyote- Indianapolis, IN
Tommy was noted for having outstanding power and speed in his high school days, but he took time off to puruse a law degree. He had said he wasn't considering pro ball an idea
#4 Molt Rise 2B/3B Winged Hyena- LaCrosse, WI
Not much has come out of the scouting reports on the young Hyena coming from Wisconsin, but those that do agree that Molt has the potential of being a five-tool infielder. Though his batting is above average, his speed on the basepaths helps to stretch out extra base hits, and his fielding presence and arm helped him rack up solid defensive keys. He looks to be a chance for a Glittering Glove every season.
#5 Alexandra Condon OF Golden Jackal- Memphis, TN
Alexandra is a cold operator, focusing most of her free time on practicing in the batting cages and running on Appilachian University's track to the point where even many of her teammates have called her detached. But her hard work has given her a keen eye and fleet feet, perfect for the field though many reporters have complained loudly that interviewing her is like talking to a statue.
#6 Ferdinand Fernandez SP Tiger- Miami Beach, FL
The son of an immigrant family, Ferdinand worked hard in his family’s restaurant growing up, practicing baseball during what little free time he had. He was raised in a rough neighborhood in the Miami area and had several run-ins with local gangs; one incident nearly cost him his life and left him with a large knife scar across his left face. He quickly gained a reputation for being a fiery fighter, and he brought that same passion to the mound when he pitched. In high school his numbers were staggering: 0.89 career ERA, 13-0 W/L record, 67 K’s… Key Biscayne State took note and wisely grabbed up a commitment from the young stud. In one year at that school he went lights out, finishing with a 1.52 ERA and a 9-2 record. The following year he transferred to a community college so he could come out for the draft a season early. While Ferdinand is hands down one of the top prospects of this year’s draft, his personal life makes him somewhat of a risk. He is notorious for his shady love affairs as well as his drinking and partying habits. There are rumors of illegal dealings he may or may not be involved in, but nothing has ever been confirmed and to date his record is completely clean.
#7 Don Garrett 1B Raccoon- Arlington, VA
Ever since the age of five, Don Garrett picked up a baseball bat and never let go of it. A very energetic boy, he spent the majority of his free time pretending he was a hall of fame player of that generation.
Those boyhood dreams have him on the verge himself, with scouts reporting on his competitive speed and keen eye for the bat. He ranks highest in his position in this year's draft, ready to slot in for most teams.
#8 Emily Vulpintaur RF Foxtaur- Gaithersburg, MD
Sister of Ty Vulpintaur, Emily decided to follow in her brother's pawsteps, long helping him develop his own skills as he inspired her. Coming out of the Univeristy of Maryland, she has proven to be a choice recruit in the right field.
#9 Kumiho "Kyu-Ball" Kakashi SP Kitsune- Kobe, Japan
Kumiho was twice voted in the top three of Pitcher of the Year in the Nippon Kemono Baseball League relying on the stereotype of Kitsune fox-trickery. His pitches are tight and seem to jump out of nowhere, and he is infamous for not relying on a fastball at all. How this will translate to American ball that tends to feast on a pitch lower than 95 mph will see.
#10 Carmella Figueora C Capybara- Naguabo, PR
The young catcher coming out of Puerto Rico has come a long way in a short time. Though she has had a strong interest in the sport going from high school with a perfect frame for catcher, it was only in the third year did she get major playing time, when she got the coaches' full attention after she withstood a charge from a heavyset bear baserunner trying to score by knocking her over and forcing her to drop the ball. The staff gave Carmela the catcher position full-time, and her experience behind the plate had already honed her patience and her eye for those perfect pitches to swing at. Like many at her position, her strength and speed are focused more for donning the catcher's mask rather than offense, but her keen eye and aim make her a formidable addition to a lineup.
#11 Javier Coronado RF/CF Jaguar- St. Paul, MN
A towering Jaguar showing his Mayan heritage proudly, this following scouting report sums up his abilities:
"I managed to catch a couple developmental league games which Javier was playing in, and he was impressive, though still in need of some refinement. He is a solid hitter, and doesn't try to force the ball off the bat. This led to a couple of unlucky outs off of hard hit balls, and he chased a couple of bad pitches that he should have taken. He has some pop in the bat, with a couple of booming home runs in batting practice and one that would have been if it stayed fair. Defensively, he was in right field and has great speed to track down balls, though his arm is average at best. The speed translates well on the bases, but he could use some coaching in how to be a more effective runner. Javier has potential and could be a high pick, but needs a year or two to really show his colors."
#12 Ketch Runner SP Donkey- Tallahassee, FL
Ketch was a up and comer two-sport athelete for basketball and football applying to Furry State until a freak ankle accident caused him to drop sports altogether. However the want to play burned in him and when his ankle was good enough to stand on, he translated his skills to a walkon pitcher's role where he tore through the ranks, compiling a 2.34 career college ERA. However his final year of eligibility he suffered again, tearing his rotator cuff. Only through sheer will and using his final year of college eligibility has brought him to the notice of scouts again, but now with questions of his fragility.

Preseason Update and Draft

We here at the FLB hope you have a safe and sane Memorial Weekend.
We're just wrapping up the final preparations of the draft list so all 12 GMs can see the available rookies for the 2014 season. It will also be accompanied by the annual report on the top 12 draft prospects and the remaining two rounds. This will be arriving by May 31st, and then the draft deadline will be two weeks later on June 13th, allowing for two full weeks of preseason action before the beginning of the season on July 1st!
Thank you very much for your submissions; these rookies help keep the league alive! We're looking forward to a great 2014 season to see if the New Orleans Pelicans can defend their title!

With a month and a half to go till the season opener we're coming at a bit of crunch time: We only have (as of submissions submitted by the end of 5/2) 8 official rookies out of the 36 that's needed to make sure each team gets three draft picks. I can easily come up with the additional 33 but part of the FLB is to allow plenty of people to have their characters' stories told! I'm prepared to extend the deadline which may have to bump the opening of the season down a bit, but I hope that for now, I can get the rosters filled!

General | Posted 12 years agoThings are getting going here in FLB central! I've almost got all the teams ready for the expansion draft, and the submission window for the new rookies is open now!
We need at least 36 players this year, three for each team.
How this is going to work:
How the players will work is any character submitted will have you as an "agent", giving you controlling of the player's story. You will have final say on stories and artwork created of your character, as well as certain story decisions; within reason. If your character isn't getting enough playing time, keep in mind your character is one among 25 players so some decisions have to be made! Also keep in mind that your character's performance is based off of a computer model. If they're having an off year, it's nothing personal! But it could make for some good on-team drama. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to note me here or at flbcommish@hotmail.com.
Name: (Try to have a first and last name, largely for the program's sake.)
Age: (Rookies generally need to be 18-22. Veterans can be anything under 30.)

How this is going to work:
How the players will work is any character submitted will have you as an "agent", giving you controlling of the player's story. You will have final say on stories and artwork created of your character, as well as certain story decisions; within reason. If your character isn't getting enough playing time, keep in mind your character is one among 25 players so some decisions have to be made! Also keep in mind that your character's performance is based off of a computer model. If they're having an off year, it's nothing personal! But it could make for some good on-team drama. FLB: Offseason Underway!
General | Posted 12 years agoSo! I know that things have been quiet again. But we're getting started here at FLB HQ. The biggest issue was the missing hard drive combined with the new job, but I'm not going to let that ruin things here. GMs should expect a note in their FA inbox sometime within the next two days asking for your protected lists for the Expansion Drafts.
How that's going to work is every team will have a chance of protecting 7 players. At least two should be pitchers, either SP or RP/Closer. The two new teams must leave at least one player in each position, but the protection lists guarantee your favorite/best players will stay where they should.
I've come to some decisions on time. I was originally going with May but with everything that's gone on I will set the traditional opening to June 15th. That still gives plenty of time to prevent the players from being too tired, plus it gives plenty of time for the various drafts. I need to get moving, get my motivation going and bring the FLB back to bear. So the expansion draft deadline is going to be March 15th for the expansion draft. That will give one month for the 10 GMs that are starting with players to get back to me with protective lists. The amateur draft will also open on March 1st, and will give two months to gather the pool of players, meaning that the amateur draft is scheduled after May 1st. This will then give one and a half months for spring training.
As I'd said earlier, I'm forgoing the issues of contracts; I will give all players an extra year this year so nobody has to worry about salary issues
The biggest sap of motivation is the missing year of player statistics. I will do my best to recover that hard drive, but if that is not recoverable I will have things ready by the beginning of the season. There's no use is worrying about a missing hard drive. One more announcement: Pending moves, the Erie Admirals are now being GMed by
paulshep and the Tuscon Titans are going to be GMed by
slyknuxdragon. Congratulations!

It's been a bit since I posted last, saying I'd be back on New Years. To begin with I apologize greatly. Work has been very very busy lately, strangely so, and just as I was trying to get things together.... my hard drive died in my laptop. The hard drive that had the entire 2013 season on it. :(
Now- the good news is that I have all the players backed up so I won't have to rebuild the entire library again, but somehow the last backup I have is from the beginning of the season. But no matter, that's fixable. I've got my laptop working again so things will go fine from here.
Also, my work is still busy, but starting this week I'm moving to a 4 10s schedule, so there's a bit more free time during the week to get things going. Meaning I may only blink off the air for three days at most ;)
By the end of the month I'm going to get the expansion draft started, also will open submissions for characters. We are still shooting for mid/end April for the 2014 amateur draft so this will still allow three months for character submissions.
I one again apologize for not at the very least getting on another computer when I was having computer troubles and giving a heads up. I know this project is always seemingly shaky at best on getting it finished, but I do strive for results.

I realize that things have been quiet- with the FA temporary shutdown and the holidays, it's been a bit wacky trying to get things together here in FLB HQ. So plans will be bumped down a bit.
