Save the Vaquita

…
how many vaquitas are left in the wild
Estimates of the number of vaquitas remaining in the wild range from 6 to 18, with some suggesting that there are no more than 10:
2023: The International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA) estimates that there are no more than 10 vaquitas left in the wild.
2022: CNN reported that there were only 10 vaquitas left in the world.
2018: CIRVA estimated that there were 6 to 22 vaquitas left in the wild.
The vaquita is a porpoise that lives in the northern Gulf of California, off the coast of Mexico. It is the most endangered marine mammal in the world. The vaquita's population has declined rapidly due to illegal and commercial gillnets used in fisheries for totoaba, shrimp, and other fish.
In 1997, the vaquita population was estimated to be around 600, but by 2016, the population had declined by 90%. Despite government regulations, including a gillnet ban in 2015, illegal fishing continues to threaten the vaquita.
Scientists are using visual, acoustic, and photo identification surveys to estimate the vaquita population. Some hope remains that the species will continue to reproduce, as scientists have observed mother-calf pairs in recent surveys.

There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,

If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart." ~ Laozi

Isaac Asimov quote
Posted a year ago"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."" ~ Isaac Asimov

Posted a year agoNabonidus, the last king of Babylon who ruled from 556–539 BCE, is often called the first archaeologist:
Excavations
Nabonidus led excavations to find the foundation stones of temples in Sippar and Harran. He also restored the temples to their original condition.
Dating
Nabonidus was the first to date an archaeological artifact. He tried to date the temple of Naram-Sin, but overestimated its age by 1,500 years.
Methods
Nabonidus' excavations were based on the Mesopotamian idea that temples needed to be excavated before they could be restored.

Another night settles in as quickly as it goes
The memories are shadows ink on the page
And I can't seem to find my way home
And it's almost like
Your heavens trying everything
Your heavens trying everything to keep me out

Posted a year agoIt appears that we have reached the edge, that zenith where stimuli and comatose collide
Forty years ago, the man proclaimed the age of the gross to be upon us, and even though the man was destroying our heritage and insulting our intelligence
That era has become very real
We labor for pleasure and abhor the guilt of pressure
My generation will go down as the architects of contemporary disgust
Some have fought and died
Others have allowed the strong to be butchered for a price they themselves don't care about and will never understand
I myself am beleaguered by the selfish face of a kind of man that is not mankind
Distrust in information
Fundamentalism of opinion
Catastrophic boredom, and a fanatical devotion to that which does not matter.
Where is your glory now, people?
Where are your gods and politicians?
Where is your shame and salvation?
You rage for no reason because you have no reason
What have you ever fought for?
What have you ever bled for?
The face of the earth is scarred with the walking dead
The age of the gross is a living virus
This is the future you have created
This is the world you have set ablaze
All your lies are coming true
All freedom is lost
All hope is gone
