For those of you who play minecraft...
General | Posted 13 years agoI'm thinking of an experiment; Taking a screenshot of some minecraft creation I love, then repainting over it in Corel Painter to make it look a tad "more realistic".
I'm not an accomplished landscape artist, so I can't vouche for the quality until I try this on one of my works...
My question to you guys is.. "How interested would you be in having that done?"

Snapshot 12w34a for Minecraft
General | Posted 13 years agoI just glanced over the textures in the latest snapshot of minecraft. I'll have 13 new ones to produce for each of my texture packs.
I'm not complaining, I am confident I'll have them done by Minecraft 1.4, but I'm also certain that I will not have support for the snapshots. It's just a bit too much to do, particularly when I'm focused on the Technic Mod Pack.
Just letting you guys know.

I just edited one of Industrial Craft's sprites

Technic/Tekkit support planned
General | Posted 13 years agoI love these mods so much, I'll defintately add support for them in my texture packs.
specifically the ores, stones, rubber trees, and then the Buildcraft machines.

I need input for Texture Pack Development
General | Posted 13 years agoSpecifically, for those of you who enjoy Technic/Tekkit. I was pleasantly suprised to learn that Technic downloaded its own copy of minecraft and modded THAT for me so that I had a no-risk opportunity to look into it. Already the mods have me.
So my request to you is this; Which texture pack should I start adding Technic support for, and which mods within the Technic pack would you suggest I develop first?
Let's rule out the 16x resolution ones for now. If you are not invested in Technic, disregard this journal.

I got Technic working...
General | Posted 13 years agoWow.
The ambient weather sounds really makes it come alive.
It will be a while before I start pokeing around at the textures. First things first is to update for the latest snapshot.

A few subtle changes to texture packs as of today
General | Posted 13 years agoI don't normally track my changes to texture packs. I should.
Recently, I have begun experimenting with the connected texture mod. Examples of this can be found in Ornate and Medieval. I do not like the Lapis in Ornate yet, we'll see. Bookshelves look good.
Also, I reverted Medieval's Birch Planks and Jungle Planks to a preivous version. The Unicorn and Dragon was a nice idea, if you're only building for yourself, but seeng works built out of Birch or Jungle planks looked garrish.
Connected Textures will be continue to be my development, albiet there are new textures in the recent snapshot that I'll have to throw in soon.

To my texture pack user(s)
General | Posted 13 years agoThank you. First and foremost, thank you.
All texture packs on my webpage are ready for minecraft 1.3.
I updated Medieval today, improving the diamond ore, and changing the gold ore.
If any of you use Medieval, I hope you can give me some feedback; I made the Birch and Jungle planks into a sort of decorative plaque. The thinking being that Birch is rare in minecraft, and Mahogony was a wood that would be imported (and thus, rarely used in Medieval Europe). I am thinking of changing these back to more subtle wood tiles, and will post a "like this or like this?" image soon comparing the change. I would greatly appreciate if at least one person would speak up and tell me which they prefer.

The Next Texture Pack
General | Posted 13 years ago.. because I honestly cannot stop.
I have started making a vector art driven texture pack. The big benefit is that the result will be infinately scalable(theoreticaly). I will be able to produce the same texture pack at 16x, 32x, 64x, 128x, 1024x... whatever.
Because of the amount of work in making vector artifacts, this pack will lack grainular surfaces making everything look smooth and plasticy. I don't like it for the loss of grain in wood, but maybe a 'cartoony' look is best for Minecraft.

Do you use any minecraft mods?
General | Posted 13 years agoDear fan,
If there are any minecraft mods you find yourself using, let me know. I'd like to start making my texture packs compatible with some of the more popular ones.

General | Posted 13 years agoI have yet to create the Enderdragon textures, but the other mobs are basically done; Some I intend to add multiple version to for the Randomobs mod..
If you want to see them before I 'officially' announce them, you can download Hybrid here:

The Future of Foxfire's Texture Packs
General | Posted 13 years agoDear Fan,
In no particular order, here are some of the upcoming plans I have for my texture packs;
More Paintings for Hybrid.
Possible development of Medieval's GUI: I want to make it more distinct from the other packs it borrows from.
Better paintings for Medieval
and new, high res mobs. I intend to make at least one version of the mobs at 128x for Hybrid, and scaled down versions for 64x and Medieval. My 16x texture packs, along with Ornate, will retain the current assortment of random mobs.
If you still use my texture packs, and see room for tweeks or adjustments, this is the time and place to let me know.

Where I am in Minecraft Texture Packs
General | Posted 13 years agoDear Fan,
Hybrid is basically done. I want to replace all of the paintings with made-for-hybrid ones, but so far what I DO have is all original artwork of mine, so I'm not paniced about flushing that out for now.
My next pack is a Middle-ages/Medieval themed one, which will probably annoy scholars of those era's but should suffice for us. It's coming along well, and the yellow, subdued torchlight at night is a really great effect. This is what I'm working on right now.
The first response to my custom/collabe offer suggested a "Jungle Ruin" theme. This will come very soon, and already I have some ideas; replace all but the pines with seperate jungle trees, pattern all the stone work after mayan sculpture, and replace all plants with ones that google says belongs in jungles.
Last of all, I am thinking of making a texture pack through Adobe Flash. Create each tile with Vector Art, and BAM! I'd have a set of textures that can be scalled for ANY resolution. I'm excited about this idea, but haven't figured out how I want to implement it. Thinking about the Jungle texture pack, but I dunno. Vector art tends to lack in GRAINY effect, which would mean the result could look cartoony. We'll see.

The Brony Phenomenon
General | Posted 13 years ago...or, why My Little Pony has an audience greater than little girls.
While I'm not entirely invested in the series itself, it interests me greatly to try and learn WHY a work of fiction is successful. Here, I list several factors that I think have led to the cartoon's recent success.
Action. Seriously... the new My Little Pony is more violent than the He-Man cartoons of the 80's. Cartoons back when I was a kid had a lot more scruteny from censors, and according to wikipedia, the animators of He-Man were forbiden to show the protagonist use his iconic sword in any offensive manner whatsover. He could block laser beams with it, but never so much as tap Skeletor with it. In the new My Little Pony, I've observed one of them snap the neck of a bear.
Iconism. This is probably the biggest draw of the series. Each pony has a distinct behaivior that the audience can quickly learn and steriotype. The pony motif is one that parody artists can also exploit. Name it for something it does, put a relevant icon on the flank of an established silloutte, and you have a ready-for-purpose character. While MLP doesn't have as many characters as the Simpsons, they do have a variety that fit the mold for whatever their writers decide to do next.
Fan Acceptance. I am begining to think it's a trend that more industries need to embrace, and that's interaction with your fans. As close as you can tollerate it. While I don't think the decision is motivated purely by money, I think the Bronies shell out more on merchandise than do the little girls, so smiling and greeting them at conventions probably helps the series remain running longer than telling them they should be hospitalized or "grow up."
Wide dissemination; Thanks to the internet, a person has a lot more opportunity to view stuff they wouldn't otherwise schedule time for. Derivative works also contribute somewhat, by introducing more popular aspects to potential audiance members who would probably not have gotten past the title "My LITTLE PONY".
Cleaner graphics. Probably not a BIG reason, but I thought I'd mention it. Animations today are often made with Vector Graphics. Vector Graphics are formulas recorded for drawing an image allowing for the image to be scaled with true fidelity. No matter how large or small a pony is on the screen, it is not going to look grainy.

Possible Free Custom Texture Pack.
General | Posted 13 years agoDear Fan,
I am considering offering to make a few custom textures for minecraft at someone's direction. It would most certainly not be a total conversion, and ideally I'm thinking of contributing to someone's texture pack they are already working on.
Resolution would be 64x or less for a complete file (such as the blocks) or a few specific ones detailed at a higher resolution. I simply want to get a little practice working for a client.
If interested, reply to this journal.

Foxfire's Texture Packs compliant with 12w22a
General | Posted 13 years agoMy seven texture packs are now compliant with snapshot 12w22a, and hopefully the next minecraft update.
You can get them here:
http://www.sifox.com/foxfire_kadrpg/index.html
I reworked Hybrid's Iron Ore and Redstone Ore, and added Gold Armor.
I plan to rework Diamond Ore sometime, and when I finish the Armors in the items file, Hybrid will be "done".

The Next Texture Pack
General | Posted 13 years agoA few nights ago, I rifled through some of the more popular texture packs on minecraft forums. While they are skilled works, I think what they possess that mine do not is a strong theme.
Upscale was a strong theme, and perhaps I'll post it on a forum someday when I can tailor a leagal disclaimer to fit the forums mandate.
That being said, I really think I need a strong theme for the next texture pack. I have long lamented that there isn't enough European Middle Ages motif in video games and today it struck me, I should make it happen.
The next texture pack I make will attempt to mimic the designs of Middle Ages and Midieval Europe. We'll see how it turns out.
If you like my texture packs, please be sure to let others know. I have yet to post them on any of the forums.
