Head Cold - Catchup
General | Posted 9 years agoHello friends,
Thanks again for those of you who have shown moral and financial support of my wife's and my work.
You are responsible for seeing us through really tough times.
We couldn't ask for kinder watchers and friends. Thank you.
I have a head cold at the moment, but it didn't hit til right before bed on Christmas day, so I'm happy the timing wasn't earlier and we got to really enjoy the holiday. I am taking today to rest and medicate, and hopefully tomorrow I'll be back to work.
I am VERY far behind in my pinups and only slightly behind on FNAB2, but now that the wife is getting work hours again and I'm getting more pledge support, there will be less (hopefully no more) emergency sales. Only regular monthly slots when I can make them available.
Let's hope we can put all the strife of 2016 behind us and have a much better year in 2017.
See you there,
- Fox

F.A.Q. - Five Nights at Betty's and FNAB2
General | Posted 9 years agoI get a lot of similar questions about the games, release dates, what will be accessible when and for who.
This journal will answer most of these questions so I have an easy way to respond. If you have any new questions that are not answered here, please feel free to ask.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Where can I see the real life Betty Fursuit videos and photos?
My wife
linapilchard who is the voice and fursuit model for Betty posts regularly to her FA page and her sexy fursuiting Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/linapilchard
- Where can I play new FNAB2 Episodes?
While the full FNAB2: Episode 1 is posted publicly as a demo, Episodes 2 and beyond and all re-skins and bonus content will be released exclusively on my Patreon:
https://www.patreon.com/foxmcfly
Completed episodes will be remain exclusive for at least 3 months on Patreon before being posted anywhere else. Keep in mind, Patreon support is what pays the bills and allows me to make these games.
- I donated to FNAB2 in the 2015 campaign. Do I get access?
If you supported the FNAB2 fundraiser from early 2015, you will gain access to each finished episode via email.
They will be sent to the addresses attached to the Paypal account you used to donate.
However, you will not have access to the WIP or alternate versions of the episodes made exclusively for Patreon.
If you donated to the second game and have not been contacted about access, please go through your paypal records and find the transaction record (should have been between January 1st and March of 2015) and send me a note with the date you donated. I'll confirm it and give you access.
If you donated to the first game, all levels and main content (excluding special re-skins and bonus extra content) will be posted publicly for everyone to have early access. It is on hold at the moment while the 2nd game is in production and will be finished after that (odd I know, but they will all merge as one story that way much better).
If you have not donated at all yet, the only option to gain early access to FNAB2 content is to be a $5 Patreon patron or higher to gain access to whatever material is available that month.
- Where can I play the original FNAB nights?
Play Nights 1-3 here: http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/.....ed-Game-Nights
Additional previews and content here: http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/.....-Extra-Content
- When will the next Night of the original FNAB be released?
The original FNAB is on hold until FNAB2 is complete. Nights 1 and 2 are fully complete, Night 3 is complete except for sound, and Night 4 has a short preview. FNAB2 is a prequel so it won't spoil continuity. This was voted on and approved by supporters.
- When will the next Episode of the FNAB2 be released?
I aim to have a partial update for each episode every month, if not a fully completed episode.
Each Episode of FNAB2 takes a lot of work, more than the original FNAB Nights did. I estimate they will take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks each to complete. Episode 1 will have taken about 4 weeks or so to complete, but some episodes won't be as complex and will recycle assets made for previous episodes. Some will take more time due to complex mini-game debugging or animation. Keep in mind that "X weeks" doesn't mean "X weeks from the date the last episode came out". I have other projects like pinups and other animation. So "X cumulative weeks of work" is closer to being accurate.
- Who will be the characters? Will there be male or herm characters?
There will be 2 male character, and at least one female who is more than just female.
The following is the roster for the game. The order may not stay the same and may be altered at any time.
Ep1 -
vawlkus ("Mags" - female - dog - Pirate Attack) Noted Dec 30, 2015
Ep2 -
vawlkus ("Deanne" - female - albino deer - Ski Expedition) Noted June 4th, 2016
Ep3 -
aragohm /
Makaidos ("Makaidos" - male - dragon - Castle Coaster)
Ep4 -
darkwater ("Melody" - female - bunny - Gazebo Blvd.) Noted May 23, 2016
Ep5 -
Raksha_Jareth (
Imiut new account) ("Mera" - female - bat - Magic Manor)
Ep6 -
dorsal ("Dorsal" - male - Orca - Ice Maze)
Ep7 -
chiscringle (name forthcoming - female - Snow Leopard - Western Wilderness)
Ep8 -
goldlinaric (Surprise character - Attraction to be determined)
Ep9 -
technophile34 (Surprise finale character - Future City) Noted Feb 8, 2016
- I want spoilers
Sorry, no spoilers. The FNAB games already have very little story, and spoiling what little there is might ruin it for the other players.
There will be clues and special bonus material hidden in encrypted easter eggs throughout
linapilchard 's Betty Fursuit photo shoots.
Feel free to ask new questions and I'll answer them the best I can.

FNAB2: Episode 1 - COMING THIS MONTH
General | Posted 9 years agoWith all the garbage happening in our lives lately, it's nice to be able to deliver some GOOD news:
FNAB2: Episode 1 is coming out before the end of November!
I've just got a little less than a week worth of work ahead if nothing goes wrong in the meantime.
Hopefully you will all be enjoying the new game very soon.

Almost at the finish line... but tripped on a life-lemon
General | Posted 9 years agoUPDATE (added Nov. 9
Looks like it may have just needed a new battery after all.
Old:
=================
We were just SO close... I was saying to Lina "I think with that last commission I took today, we will be able to pay the power bill and make it to your next check". Less than an hour later we go to the car and when I turned the key the horn honked, lishts flashed, doors locked, wipers squirted and wiped all at once! Everything but starting. Tried to jump it, that didn't help.
Ugh.... life.
"I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these!?!"
Anyway, it's been towed they'll be looking at it today. It's evidently a common thing with this model. It's going to be 1 of 3 things:
1. Loose bolt causing a short
2. Needs new wires
3. Needs a new alternator
3 is the expensive one I'm hoping not to get. And no matter which one, we will have to pay for the tow at minimum.
So freaking close to having 5 minutes to sit and rest and not worry. So close...
I've considered doing my Black Friday sale in multiple waves, and offer different deals on different days. What do you think?

Update on the future of FNAB and FNAB2
General | Posted 9 years agoHey everyone! I posted a survey last night, and by this afternoon, we already reached the max votes!
Thank you all so much for showing your support for FNAB
The final results were:
33.00% Voted:
"Just finish Night 4 any way you can (It doesn't have to be very good/long, just be done with it.)"
67.00% Voted:
"Make Night 4's character Kayla and her scene into a NEW project with similar aspects of Night 4. This will open up new possibilities and ways to make the scenario fun and fresh."
What that means for Night 4, FNAB, and FNAB2:
1 . Night 4 will be set aside while I work on the FNAB2 Demo (which will be available publicly for free).
2. Night 4 will be worked on as a side project along with my other FA work, but it will spin off from the FNAB formula and have some new content added.
3. As you voted previously, the rest of FNAB will be completed AFTER FNAB2 is complete.
4. FNAB2's episodes (after the first free demo) will become Patreon early access exclusives like my other animations.
Everyone who donated to FNAB2 back when it was in early crowdfunding will also have early access to all episodes as the are released on Patreon. Episodes will be made available for free on FA three months after being posted to Patreon.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask (Please be respectful to me and your fellow users).
Thanks for your votes and support!

The Human Body is Crap
General | Posted 9 years agoAs much as I enjoy my human senses and the joy of living, maintaining a human body is CRAP.
My skin condition has been a roller coaster for months, I stubbed my ingrown toenail and it's probably infected, and last night I managed (while too vigorously applying lotion to sooth my burning facial skin) to sprain my neck or worse.
Lucky for me, none of these have kept me from my work (yet- Jury is still deciding on the neck thing, as today was my day off), which is catching up nicely. However, if there are minor delays or problems, at least you will know the cause.
For the skin, I just completed another internal organ flush (which usually clears me up partially for a week or two), but I'm planning to shift my diet completely for a few weeks to reset my internal micro-biome and see if a better diet structure will help.
For the toe, running it under hot water appears to have helped greatly reduce the swelling and pain and it should be fine soon enough.
For the neck... this one terrified me. I've never hurt myself so badly in such a manner. I woke up my wife and was almost in tears due to the pain and worry that I may have seriously injured myself. After about 10 hours of rest though it felt a bit better, and I had an almost normal day with minor pain. Shows signs of a sprain or strained muscle more than a fracture or herniated disc, so I'm hoping I'll be good by the morning.

Moved in, FNAB Night 4, and catch-up
General | Posted 9 years agoOK, so we are moved in. No sign of mold or spiders or a portal to hell or anything so far.
It will take a long while to get unpacked and settled, but at least we feel more stable than in previous months.
There are also a lot of new expenses and we lost a lot of essential belongings in the rushed move, so it's going to be a bumpy start. Though we have pulled through this far, the worst is behind us.
I have a LOT to catch up on, including September's pinups, Halloween's Pinups, and this month's animation.
But I am putting Betty first. I'll be picking up the pieces of FNAB Night 4 and re-starting production on that starting tomorrow. Voice for it may be completed for it at a later date (as with Night 3) but I want the animation done this month so I can move on to the demo for FNAB2.
Thank you all for bearing with us through these tough times, for your financial and moral support. I couldn't ask for better fans, friends, and family.

Mostly moved in
General | Posted 9 years agoWe have salvaged most of what we can from my family's house, though a lot is going ro be left behind as well. I am making daily trips back and forth to salvage what I can before the property has its locks changed. My wife and I have to volunteer at a local convention from the 7th-9th, and I will be posting again on the 10th. We are also waiting for the phone company to hook up our internet, and apperently there is a 2 week wait. Ouch. So hopefully public wifi and phone tethers will do til then.
Looking forward to normalizing again.
Love you all,

We're gonna be okay... soon
General | Posted 9 years agoWe finally signed a lease, and this new place is twice as nice as the previous living space for the same price. An extra big garage and a spare room too. Only one toilet though, so that might take some getting used to. But overall, a much better living arrangement.
Anyway, we are packing like crazy trying to be out of my family's old house in time before the lock-out.
So while it's not fun now, we feel at least a little peace of mind knowing that by the end of the week, we'll be in our own safe little home.
Thank you all for your commissions, donations, and kind words throughout these last very difficult months.
I should be back to work some time in early October, and will resume pinups, large queue projects, and my ongoing work on FNAB and FNAB2.
Thank You

Eviction, Delays, and Moving Fundraiser
General | Posted 9 years agoHello again friends and watchers,
The avalanche of problems is hopefully almost over, but what a horrible climax it's come to.
My family's home for 10 years has officially been taken from them due to legal problems resulting in foreclosure.
The last appeal failed and My wife and I, who have been house sitting for my family and all belongings must be off the property by the end of the month.
My wife and I have found a new place to rent on short notice, and will be rushing to get everything packed and moved within the next 2 weeks. There should be enough local friends of ours to help us move and evacuate my family's belongings to storage. However, it's already put a lot of stress and strain on Lina and myself with us both working full time.
While I will be continuing my normal Patreon work for the month, you will see temporary delays in my FA pinup queues until after October 4th. I am very sorry for these delays, and I'll try to make sure I have September's remaining queue completed in early October if circumstances go as planned.
I will be posting a Moving Fundraiser soon, featuring some unique commission opportunities!
Don't worry, I won't be selling anything that will compromise my queues' delays further.
Funds from which will go toward things like our first month's rent, rent deposit, movers the heavy appliances/furniture we can't move on our own.
You have all been so wonderful and helpful. Thank you

New Cheap Laptop - Problems almost over
General | Posted 9 years agoAs I feared, my MacBook's logic board is the problem. The same problem as 3 years ago. And Apple doesn't make those parts anymore. Not to mention it would have been like $400+ to fix it if they still did.
So today, I was lucky enough to afford a simple new $230 laptop which I am currently breaking in. I guess this is how it should be though, using an easily replaceable windows laptop instead of an expensive one that still needs replacing/repairs every 3 years regardless.
Anyway, once I get my art programs installed I'll be back to work, but I still have to get my data off my mac hard drive through another working mac before I can continue work on things like FNAB and other ongoing projects.
Please bear with me during this. I hate it as much as you all do, only I'm the one who has to deal with fixing it.
Thank you all.

More Trouble, More Troubleshooting
General | Posted 9 years agoSo about 2 days after "fixing" my computer, it's having the same problems again. Which means it's not the hard drive (at least not hdd hardware failure). So the Mac store I took it ran a diagnostic and there are not any apparent hardware problems (at least not ones that showed up). So I've been advised to manually reinstall the OS and my programs etc. That's gonna take more time away from work, which is killing me. I'm not a workaholic type, but drawing is my life, and not getting to do what I enjoy and making people wait for their art is doubly hard on me.
So I might have to acquire a Windows copy of CS5 and work from another computer temporarily til I get sh*t fixed. That may not be the best idea, but I can't just sit on my hands. I've already lost too much work time.
Anyway, wish me luck that I get this garbage fixed one way or another very soon.

Things are fixed for now
General | Posted 9 years agoHey guys, I got my computer back up and running again. Which means (If I was right and the only problem was fixed) I'll be posting here and on Patreon again soon.
Thank you all for you loving support during this rough time.

Traditional Ink pinups? (and delays)
General | Posted 9 years agoMore Delays
So I got my replacment hard drive in the mail today, and I don't know if it works yet because apparently neither of my external 2.5" HDD are SATA. I thought I had an IDE and a SATA, not an IDE and a PATA. So, I just ordered the right case. And that's going to take a few more days to get here. So now I'm just hoping neither product is dead on arrival... We'll see.
I'm seriously having art withdrawal (LOL). I'm so used to animating and drawing almost daily, it's weird to get a break from my job/hobby.
Traditional Ink pinups - Limited Time Offer
Since I have nothing to do until my Mac is fixed, would anyone like a traditionally hand drawn and inked pinup?
I don't normally do traditional commissions outside of conventions, and I have only ever done 2 or 3 adult pinups on actual paper, so this is your chance for a bit of a rarity.
Prices and Shipping - All pinups will be single-character, black/white, inked line art, on Bristol board.
Pinups MUST qualify for Love-to-draw (discount already applied to the prices below). http://www.furaffinity.net/commissi.....s/foxpawmcfly/
Detail level will be similar regardless of paper size:
$35 - 4.5x6inch mini pinup (or "badge" if you want their name on it)
+ $2 Shipping/handling to U.S. (continental 48 states) or $5 to anywhere else worldwide.
If shipping is somehow over $5, additional fees for the difference will apply.
$45 - 9x12inch art pinup
+ $5 Shipping/handling to U.S. (Not available outside the US)
If shipping is somehow over $5, additional fees for the difference will apply.
SLOTS WILL BE COMPLETED THIS WEEK*

So now I'm just hoping neither product is dead on arrival... We'll see.
I'm seriously having art withdrawal (LOL). I'm so used to animating and drawing almost daily, it's weird to get a break from my job/hobby.

Problems, problems, problems
General | Posted 9 years agoI'll post details later, as I'm typing this from my phone.
1. Appartment had black mold so we have to start over with moving elsewhere.
2. We have internet restired here at the place we are housesitting.
3. My Mac is having major issues which look like a dying hard drive so I can't even boot up properly, let alone allow me to access my work.
When it rains, it pours.
Pray and hope with us to get things back to normal soon.
Love you all.

How to Trade - Status update
General | Posted 9 years agoNews
We're still in the process of moving. We've been paying rent on a home we haven't slept in once. But that's because we're trying to pack, keep up with work/chores, and now my condition is flaring up again, making my work slower. Otherwise, things are okay here. I'll have the finished animations for Night 4 out this month so I can begin work on the Betty's 2 Demo.
How to trade
I am not open for trades at this time. But I thought I would post this for future reference and as a guide to the etiquette of art trading.
1. Ask to trade via a note.
2. If the artist says "No", thank them for their time and leave them alone.
- If they say "Maybe, but first..." then act accordingly and don't be pushy.
- If the artist says "Yes", proceed to negotiations.
3. Negotiate what kind of art you want for what they want. This includes:
- How many characters, objects, and other things there will be in the scene.
- What level of detail the art in the trade should be (i.e. ink, color, shading, etc.)
- When the trade should take place (or around what time frame)
- What you and they are capable of or best at (i.e. abilities, specialities, limitations)
- What limits on subject matter you each have (i.e. porn, nudity, fetishes, & triggers)
4. Come to an agreement of what you each will be getting from the trade based on the above and adhere to it as best you can.
5. Complete the trade and thank the artist.

The McFly Character Design Scale v0.9.1
General | Posted 9 years agoThe McFly Character Scale (v0.9.02)
Everyone wants a good original character right? But when is character design trying so hard to be original that it stops being pleasant to look at or draw? That's what the McFly Character Scale was designed to do. It's here so you can calculate how many attributes your character has that are based on visual distinction. It's nice to be able to see for yourself where your character is and also refer others to see theirs for themselves without you looking like a jerk. Every character need some points to be interesting, but too many is a clear sign your are overreaching and trading good quality design and simplicity for "originality".
First, let me start by saying that furries, bronies, and many other artistic fans who create their own characters are some of the most fun and lovable people on this planet and that their boundless creativity is part what makes our wonderful cultures so diverse and interesting. Second, know that I would never openly discourage creativity or personal free expression. Be who you are, do what you do, and don't let anyone stop you. It's also not my place to judge, it's yours. Your character(s) are your business. This is more of a way to see how your character stacks in comparison to similar designs. It might also help you figure out what to add to make your character stand out more, or what to remove to make them more pleasing to the eye.
(Read more of the preface at the bottom of this page)
Start here:
- A natural real life animal OR human with no distinct features or characteristics measures at level 0 on the Mcfly scale.
- Anthropomorphic (human) attributes in any quantity or variety/combination are +1 point (includes optional sexualization within normal parameters of the human body or chosen animal species).
- Additional animal/fictional species attributes may be applied in any quantity, variety, or combination for X x X (where X = the number species not including human. e.g. cat + dog, 2 x 2 = 4 points. Cat + Dog + Cow + Pig, 4x4 = 16 points)
- Applying an artistic stylization (beyond semi-realism) such as “Looney Tunes”, “Tim Burton”, “Dali”, “Don Bluth”, “Bruce Timm”, “Blotch”, “Power Puff Girls”, etc. are +1 points, +0 for additional similar styles and +2 for each additional clashing style.
- Sex (genitalia) is 0 points if it is male or female. Any combination of the two may be combined for +1 point. Additional occurrences of genitalia may be added for X x2
points (where X = the number of total genitals. e.g. 2 penises = 2 x2 = 4 points.
5 penises = 5 x2 = 10 points)
- Colorations naturally occurring for that species or close approximates are 0 points. Unnatural colors are +1 point to start . Once you already have an unnatural color applied, you can apply other unnatural colors that match the pallet for 0. Each color that clashed with any other applied color +2 points per color with a max of 7 points. This includes makeup like nail polish, eye shadow, hair etc. A rainbow anywhere is an automatic max of 7 points.
- Simple Unnatural markings such as simple birth marks, birth defects, scars, missing limbs, or special fur pattern(s) range from +1 to +3 each depending on the detail level.
- Complex Unnatural markings such as tattoos, cutie marks, elaborate fur patterns, etc. are judged by their own complexity as their own character and that total is added to the character with that mark. E.g. if you have a tattoo of a 7 point character on your body, that total now applies to you. If you have a cutie mark with a 3 clashing colors, that 6 points gets added to you.
- Naturally occurring markings for that species in no particular pattern are 0 points, otherwise (see Additional Species).
- Additional limbs/appendages/body parts beyond the normal appendages of any one species integrated in the character may be added for X x X per symmetrical pair of 2 or single limb with no mate. (Where X = the total number of additional limbs. E.g. 1 extra eye = 1 x 1 = 1point. 4 extra arms, 4 x 4 = 8points. Pair of wings in addition to arms on an anthro cat-bird 2 x 2 = 4points)
- Additional heads/torsos are X x X each (where X = each additional head beyond the first).
- Additional minor attributes like horns, sharp teeth, claws, poofy tail, or other minor attributes not normally found on that species can be added for +1 per symmetrical instance.
- Special abilities (e.g. superpowers or other characteristics that don’t effect the look of the character’s natural state) are 0 points unless they are always in effect. Like having hair made of fire, unnaturally glowing eyes, or fairy dust sparkling all around your body.
- Hairstyle/color which is not natural or is a style more elaborate thn something common and simple you would get at the barber/salon is +1 point per instance.
- Asymmetry is +1 per instance (E.g. when one half doesn't match the other, like a peg leg, one floppy ear, heterochromea, etc. See Nuances below)
- Fetishes Fetishes that are built into a character's default appearance (not related to the above mentioned) are X x X per instance (where X is the number of fetishes applied. e.g. always wears a diaper and stockings and is a pool toy 3 x 3 = 9)
- If it's not on this list, but it's also not commonly naturally occurring, +1 per instance of whatever that instance is.
(please comment if you want me to add something)
Nuances
These do not effect level unless they are purposefully done in an asymmetric fashion (e.g. claws on all but the left thumb, only one ear floppy, Heterochromatic Eyes, etc in which case they are +1 per instance):
- Naturally occurring features for that species may be withheld/adjusted (e.g. claws or no claws, floppy ears or perky ears, stripes or no stripes, shorter or longer tail)
- If you have chosen an artistic stylization, some features may be withheld (3 fingers and a thumb or 4, Nipples or none, dewclaws or none, big eyelashes or not.)
- Clothes for a character that don't require any points that are simple, common clothes for your type of character are 0 points.
Example characters
Bugs Bunny:
Looney Tunes style (+1), Anthro Rabbit (+1)
That’s all folks. 2 points.
Pikachu:
Cute Anime Style (+1). Pikachu is based on an exaggerated mouse/rodent design.
Yellow/red are not usually rodent colors (+1). Lightning bolt tail (+1). The cheeks could be overlooked as “blush marks” in this style, and a lot of rodents do have emphasis on their cheeks, so that can be overlooked. 3 point character.
Ariel, (Disney’s) The Little Mermaid:
Ariel is drawn in Disney’s semi-toony style (+1), she a fish/girl (+1). That’s About it.
Her hair is bright red, but that’s part of the bright toon color pallet used no other color design issues. Just a solid 2 point character.
A realistically drawn, traditional Centaur.
It’s a horse/human (+1) and has an additional extra torso (+1) and 2 extra limbs (+4). That makes it a 6 point character.
Gabumon (Digimon)
Cute Anime Style (+1) Anthro-Dino (+1)
This is a complex one to dissect. His colors are a little hard to look at, but are almost a set of primaries, so I can’t quite say they clash. However, that “tattoo” (+3). Also, the closest real thing to what he’s wearing is a tiger or similar creature, which has no horn (+1). No mammal has blue fur (+1) or Pink claws (+1). He wears part of it like gloves/hat, but that adds an extra set of claws not attached to his fingers (+1) and a whole additional 2 arms hanging behind him (+4). 13 points in all. That’s a lot of overreaching for something this professional. Compare that to Agumon from the same series who is a 3 point character, and his rookie level friends who are 3-6 at highest. That’s shameful. A lot of the more evolved digimon get way past his score. well beyond anything a professional animation studio should be designing.
Nick Wilde 3points, Spongebob 3points, Scooby-Doo 2points, Pinkie Pie 3points.
Detecting the pattern? If your character is recognizable to everyone and is between 2-4points, you’re probably a professional. If you’re just a regular joe trying to make an original character, try to keep it below 10. Unless you specifically want to be a "Gabumon", I wouldn't reach that far.
Preface - The comment response I made that lead me to create this scale
I'm probably going to put my foot in my mouth on this, so please don't be upset with me if I sound crass.
First, let me start by saying that furries, bronies, and many other artistic fans who create their own characters are some of the most fun and lovable people on this planet and that their boundless creativity is part what makes our wonder cultures so diverse and interesting. Second, know that I would never openly discourage creativity or personal free expression. Be who you are, do what you do, and don't let anyone stop you.
That said, being an artist who gets paid to draw kinky adult things I've seen a LOT of things. Things that range from "Aww, that's cute" to "I'm not sure if I'm uncomfortable or turned on" to "Oh sweet lord, why!?". Even just in passing, I sometimes want to un-see some of the art I've seen. This character is tame by my standards... anthro dragon herm girl with an equine penis and a dolphin tail? Nothing weird about that when you've seen what I have over the years. The rest of the vanilla internet looses their mind to things as simple as this https://youtu.be/-pYOrHU8gcI . LOL
The term "Sparkledog" is a joke among artists and an insult among young character creators, but it derives from unusual circumstances. Back in the old cartoon days, when anthro animals in multimedia were new and fresh, it wasn't hard to create "original characters" with Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, and Oswald the rabbit... even though they're all the same body and head with slightly different faces. All you had to do was pick an animal like a dog or a fox, doodle it, and copyright it. These days, EVERYONE online has their own "original character(s)", but how am I supposed to tell one cat, dog, or dragon from the next? By grasping at straws to make them not feel like everyone else. And that's not easy!
My Little Pony is the perfect example (I'm a fan of MLP myself). For 95% of MLP foreground and background characters: Start with a blank adult pony body and paint it a solid color. Now pick a hairdo and hair color(s) and eye color. Choose sex (different face shape for male/female). Now put a one-of-a-kind logo on their flank and optionally add a horn or wings. Rinse, repeat. It actually works really well. You'd think they'd run out of color combos eventually.
Furries and other fans do the same thing, but while most MLP characters try to keep it to the base color and hairdo formula, furries and other original character creators sometimes overreach in trying to make sure that their fox or panda or whatever is distinguishable from every other.
For furries, choose an animal species and combine it with a human body (optionally choose one or more other additional unrelated species to mix with those 2). Now choose a sex (or combine them in any way or just make up a whole new sex/gender with genitals optionally from an additional species). Choose a color to replace the colors of your animal's original colors (or choose multiple colors that may or may not clash and additional patterns like stripes, spots, rainbows, tattoos, cutie marks, etc). And that's before giving it original clothes/jewlery/scars/hairdo/etc. and then optionally putting that character into a fetish drawing combining any multitude of other fetishes on top of the ones for just that character alone...
Now imagine being the artist being told to draw it, with or without a pre-existing reference sheet. Calling it daunting would be an understatement.
That's not an attack on you or your character(s). The truth is, some of my favorite characters exist because someone had the guts to jumble up a munch of odd visual ideas, that just happen to work.
So have at it... Be creative, be interesting, try to be original even though it's harder every day, and enjoy it!
Just be aware that with every additional color, stripe, extra nipple, tattoo, and rainbow tail you add, that originality gained might take a toll on other aspects of what makes a character memorable, lovable, and interesting.
Everyone wants a good original character right? But when is character design trying so hard to be original that it stops being pleasant to look at or draw? That's what the McFly Character Scale was designed to do. It's here so you can calculate how many attributes your character has that are based on visual distinction.
