The worst computer ever made?
Posted 15 years agoName: Unknown, missing front plate, probably a home brew
RAM: 64 bytes (not megabytes or kilobytes, bytes)
ROM: 2kb (?)
CPU: MOS 6502 (?)
Year: September 8th 1978 (on RF box)
input/output: line to tape recorder and standard RS 232
I'll post a picture if I can
It's more like a calculator than a computer, it has a standard ASCII keyboard that looks like it was ripped out of another computer.
It takes almost 3 seconds to perform any calculation with the standard PRINT 1+1 basic stuff.
I feel bad for any sucker who had to type a term paper on this piece of crap.

Internet's new look
Posted 15 years agoI've noticed a lot of popular sites are starting to look different. Google, Youtube, Deviant Art, and Wikipedia all seem to be changing their styles, I suppose to look more modern for the futuristic year of 2010. It's okay, but for most sites I've noticed it's harder to navigate and on DA, when I click on a picture it looks blurry, at first I though it was just loading but then it didn't change. And this, I must say, is where Deviant art and I part ways. I could deal with the constant changes and the fact that you have t pay for stuff now, but when I can't even see the pictures I simply won't use it anymore.
I just hope that furaffinity doesn't go through the same changes that the other sites are.
If so I might as well go back to using Lynx to browse the internet :P

Two years on furaffinity
Posted 15 years agoYup, joined on April 23rd 2008 and a lot of things have changed. I'm too lazy to go into it though so that's pretty much it.
Television
Posted 15 years agoI don't watch The Simpsons very often, about once a week, but every time I turn it on it's the same episode!!
I tune in and it's either the one where Skinner runs out of gas on the road or the one where Milhouse gets suspended. They must show the same episodes at least once a week!
For fuck sake, there are over 400 episodes, some of which I've never even seen! can't they show one from a few years ago?
But every day it's an episode from '08 or '09 and it pisses me off!
And with Family Guy, I like the show, but they show an hour of it on channel 6 every night, an hour on Adult Swim, and two hours on TBS, that and other channels, they must show about six hours of Family Guy every day. Think about it. That's a quarter of the whole day devoted to Family Guy! And there aren't nearly as many episodes of Family Guy as The Simpsons.
When I was a kid (before our town had cable) there were only two tv stations, KVOS (5), and Fox (6).
Because we didn't yet have a different station for every little thing, KVOS showed everything, Cartoons, movies, sitcoms, news. I wonder what happened to that?

Favourite atari games II
Posted 15 years ago6. "Demon Attack" 1982: The first time I played this game I was blown away by it's quality. The graphics and game play are very superior for the atari 2600. You play a ship that is constantly bombarded by flying demons which re spawn eight times before the level is over. The demons closes to the ground also drop bombs, so I find it good to kill them first rather than dodging them. As the levels move up, so does the speed and brutality of the demons.
7. "Berzerk" 1982: Berzerk is a pretty damn awesome game. it takes place inside an electrified maze, where you run around shooting robots with electric rays. On the first level, the robots are rather stupid, they can't shoot and most of them die from walking into a wall. As the levels progress, the robots change color, gain speed, and have the ability to shoot in more directions, and eventually Evil Otto the bouncing smiley face of doom begins to chase after you. The graphics are minimal and there is relativity no sound other than shooting effects, but this gives it a cool aura of being in real danger. I also give it an A for having one of the coolest death scenes in Atari history.
8. "Cosmic Ark" 1982: Cosmic Ark is the sequel to "Atlantis" another game by Imagic. You play as a space ship that shoots at asteroids and then sends out probes to abduct little aliens for the "Cosmic Ark". You also have to stay away from a laser defense system later in the game. The Graphics and sound are awesome for the 2600 and at the end of the game, the ship is blown up and a smaller ship flies away, leaving room for another sequel. The whole game reminds me of Battlestar Galactica.
9. "Mario Bros." 1983: Not "Super Mario Bros." just plain "Mario Bros". This sort of reminds me of Street Fighter, how everyone has played Street Fighter 2 ans it's sequels, but not many people remember the original because of the console it was on and how it played. You play as Mario, running through the sewer and tipping over turtles, crabs, and fly type things by hitting your head on the ceiling. All the while being chased by a pink swirl that knocks you down. There is even a primitive looking underground scene where you pick up extra coins. There is no music and a rather annoying sound of Mario walking. The controls are pretty awful, but it doesn't really take away from this being a great game.
10. "Breakout" 1978: Games don't get much more basic than Breakout, unless you count "Chase", which was advertised in a 1972 issue of P.E. Either way you are basically a prisoner that is trying to break out of prison. There are two screens of bricks and after you break through them the game is over. The ball can travel at eight different angles and travels at a grater speed as the game progresses.
The sound is primitive, the graphics are primitive, the controls are primitive. But hey, you can't really complain about such an early Atari classic.

My favourite atari games
Posted 15 years ago1. "Adventure" 1979: One of the first video games I ever played and still my most favourite. You play as a dot moving through mazes, castles, and catacombs looking for different objects while running from dragons and a bat that steals whatever you're holding. With minimal graphics, no music and repetitive screens, it is still beautiful, and a wonder that it was all fit into just 4kb of rom.
2."Super Breakout" 1978: I find this game to be better than regular breakout, the graphics and sound are better as well as having more control over the ball, I can still sit and play this game for hours at a time. The only complaint I have is that it does not take up the entire screen like original breakout. It is still very good for 1978.
3."Pac-Man" 1981: Although it was rushed and has little to compare with the arcade Pac-Man or even the Atari 5200 version, I still can't stop playing it. The graphics and sound are rather horrible, after a while, eating the dots or lines begins to sound like someone repeatedly hitting a piano key. Still a fun game though.
4."Venture" 1982: This game is somewhat like a combination of pac-man and berzek. You control a small dot which moves from room to room. Upon entering a room you turn into a smiley face and shoot arrows at things like ghosts and snakes in order to gain treasures like diamonds and lawn chairs. You really have to get in and get out though because if you're not quick, the hall monster will come and kill you. The graphics and game play don't really compare to the arcade version, but this can be expected due to the limited capabilities of the atari's 6507 cpu.
5."Video Olympics" 1977: One of the original Atari games, it is simply a bunch of pong variants listed as different games. Only the first game "Pong" can be one player, featuring very primitive AI. It has other games like Hockey which is pong with a different colour background and smaller goals. I could still sit around for hours and play this game.

Thinking of taking commissions
Posted 15 years agoI thought it might be fun to buy a normal pad of bee paper with 30 sheets and do 30 commissions of sketches at about $2 each.
The pictures will have to be rather simple so that each one would take less than a day to draw, so no full comics unless I say it's okay.
Right now I'm just wondering if anyone would be interested, and if you are, leave a comment. I will make a list of 1 to 30 and update it.
It also might take a while to get it organized because I'm still working on requests from
connerhemming and
trigger12
and I don't want them to think I've forgotten about them : ]
I also can't take any more requests for a while because of school, so I'll let you know when I can begin taking them again.
Anyone interested?

Moving fun
Posted 15 years agoMy family is moving to a new house this week and something funny happened while working last night. I have this old portable television which I sometimes use as a make-shift computer monitor. It's black and white and I've repaired i to the point where there is no sound and the inside is full of connecting wire and electric tape.
I had a strange feeling in the back of my head that for some reason or another, the little tv wouldn't make it to the new house, and sure enough, while carrying it to the door it fell apart leaving electrical components all over.
The saddest part, though, is that I'm going to fix it again, because they don't make them any more.
: ]
I'm also looking to buy a computer called the Kenbak-1, but it cost $999 plus $50 for shipping, so I don't think I'll be able to afford one.
But they're sooo cooool! I totally want one!
It has no actual CPU, but instead has about 132 TTL chips which make up for it, giving it 256 bytes of RAM (or about 1/4000th of a MB) but no real ROM, and you program things in machine code.
It wasn't very popular when it came out because it's not really expandable memory-wise or with I/O systems.
But they're so beautifully designed, I hope I can get one, maybe used, although pre-fabricated systems have to be assembled by hand and usually go in the $2,000 range : \

The internet in 1977
Posted 16 years agoI found this strange description of what would eventually become the internet in a book form 1977,
"Home computer networks:
Although the hardware (modems) is currently available, there has not yet been any large-scale hobby-computer-to hobby-computer communications, probably because of the relative lack of experience of most computer hobbyists.
There is no doubt, however, that in a year or so this means of communications will make its appearance, probably in a computer club as a "club newsletter" interchange. One central computer, belonging to one of the club members, will be fitted with a modem and its own telephone line. All the pertinent news for that week, such as meeting times and places, private messages , who has what for sale (flea market), and other items of interest will be places in memory.
Club members can then phone into the club computer and connect their modems and computers on line. The two computers will pass data back and forth. In this way the "newsletter" can be kept up to date-within the hour if necessary. It will resemble a private telegraph system for club members.
This private network can also be used to pass software between individual members simply by placing a telephone call and having the two computers "talk" together. Thus any two members can pass along "computer things" such as software that could not be done in any other way except on tape or in writing"(Solomon & Veit p.185-86).

Eight Truths
Posted 16 years agoI got tagged by

1. I've lived in 15 different houses in 8 different towns in 3 different states
2. My hair is longer than my Mom's
3. One of the first furry comics I drew was in German(!?) and was called "Die abunder von Kevan der Fuchs"
4. Almost none of my furry art exists from before 2008 because I burned it after my family found out.
5. I'm a very quiet person in real life, but if anyone wants to get to know me they can.
6. I got my first job when I was eight years old, I worked at a restaurant for one day. It later got closed down and turned into a Starbucks : (
7. I can recite my whole family history back to 1796 for no reason except that I remember it.
8. I listen to music when I draw and have found that the comic with Dirk shrinking sounds funny with "Dear Prudence" by the Beatles. And also that "Helter Skelter" sounds really good when looking at the Bayeux Tapestry O.o
Anyways, I really don't know who to tag so...

Beowulf: the literal translation
Posted 16 years agoI've now read Beowulf fully in Modern English and partially in Old English, and now realize how much Seamus Heaney changed it from it's original form. The original opening paragraph sounds like this:
"Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum,
þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon,
hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon".
And in the Modern English version, Mr. Heaney translates it into this:
"So.The Spear-Danes in days gone by
and the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness.
We have heard of those princes' heroic campaigns".
In a way Mr. Heaney was basically re-writing the entire story in his own words. So I did some research on my own and wrote down how it would really sound if they translated it directly from Old English into Modern English:
What! we spear-danes in year-day
nation-kings great multitude friends
how then sons of kings strength fulfillment.
That sounds really wonky, so I'm glad we now have people like Seamus Heaney around to fill in the gaps and make the story more inturesting

Aunt Therese
Posted 16 years agoUm.. my Aunt died today at around 5:00
She had been sick for quite a while, a year and a half I think
My Grandparents drove to Pennsylvania to see what they could do and my Mom and I stayed at my Grandparent's house. A few minutes later we got a call from Uncle Larry asking if My grandparents had left yet and Mom told him that they had, about ten minutes earlier. Then he said, "I don't know what to do, I think I should leave her here until they get here", and that kind of creeps me out.
I think I'll try to stay with Grandma for a little while to make sure she doesn't drink too much
When Aunt Ruth died Grandma became perpetually drunk and seeing as she was 50 when that happened and she's almost 81 now, I don't know if she can handle that anymore
But it's different for her this time, I don't know if Grandma was as close to Aunt Ruth as Aunt Therese, being that Aunt Ruth was gone during World War II (along with Uncle Jack) so Grandma and Therese were sort of alone together at that time and almost until the end of the Korean war, when they came back.

One year on furaffinity
Posted 16 years agoYep, I've been on FA for over a year now, and things have changed a lot since then.
I would have joined sooner but for some reason they weren't accepting new accounts at the time.
I was also only 14 and would sit starring at the computer, afraid of joining, because every time I would think of it the thought would be behind me "Furaffinity seems to only be for good artists, I probably shouldn't join yet" :-] so I would go crawling back to my FAP account (which no one ever saw) and wait. I did start an account here on Aprille 23rd, but didn't post anything for a while. Though when FAP closed and all of the hundreds of things that I had posted there (which nobody ever saw) disappeared, I had no choice but to come here.

creepy childhood memories
Posted 16 years agoSome of the nursery rhymes from when I was little don't seem to make sense anymore, in fact, they're downright creepy. One I remember was called "There was an old man" and it went:
There was an old man who lived in our town
Who was very old and wise
He jumped into a bumble bush
And scratched out both his eyes
And once he saw that they were out
With all his might and main
He jumped into another bush and scratched them in again.
And then there was:
Little Molly Dashes
Sat among the ashes
Warming her pretty little toes
Her mother came and saw her
And whipped her little daughter
For dirtying her nice clean clothes.
When I was little it didn't seem like much, but now I understand why they don't publish some of them anymore.
This is for my cousin Josh, who was born today around 2:00, I hope he never gets scarred :-]
