Cartoon of the Week -- The Goon Of Glocca Morra
General | Posted 12 years agoRuff and Reddy, Hanna-Barbera's answer to Crusader Rabbit, had many long adventures that are almost feature-length if put together. Seeing that they were serialized episodes, there's a lot of repetitive recaps at the start of each episode. With this in mind, I've listed every other episode of an Irish adventure the cat and dog were involved with, in honor of the pending St. Patrick's Day:

Cartoon of the Week -- Naughty Number 9
General | Posted 12 years agoNo, not that kind of naughtiness -- it's Schoolhouse Rock showing how to multiply by 9.
https://youtu.be/fsMPO3chgAo
I wonder if they still show these to young kids going to school today?

Cartoon of the Week -- Woody Dines Out
General | Posted 12 years agoClassic Woody is a bit less obnoxious here than usual, considering his antagonist has evil designs on him:
https://youtu.be/vTRwiuzJTFQ
The taxidermist cat was voiced by a very subdued Hans Conried.

Cartoons of the Week -- Soaky Bath Toy Ads
General | Posted 12 years agoSoaky was a brand of bubble bath with the gimmick that it came in collectible bottles shaped like famous cartoon characters. Since these characters came from all sorts of different studios, this resulted in some unusual pairings:
Here's Donald Duck and a naked Porky Pig in the same commercial:
https://youtu.be/Ezrsywf38KU
Even more strange is this one featuring a team-up of Superman and Tennessee Tuxedo with a Richie Rich lookalike subbing as the Soaky Kid:
https://youtu.be/NgzxdSTHrEs
And here's the weirdest (and funniest, in my opinion) duo of all -- Dick Tracy vs Musky Muskrat!

Cartoon of the Week -- Time For Love
General | Posted 12 years agoCartoon of the Week -- Fox Pop
General | Posted 12 years agoAn early color Warner Bros. cartoon dealing with a dicey subject; namely, fur farming:
https://youtu.be/w1ss0uc8pNQ
Though I do have a bit of a problem with the ending. It would have made more sense if the fox had been telling his story to two other foxes, not to two crows.

Cartoon of the Week -- Pink Punch
General | Posted 12 years agoA somewhat surreal short in which the Panther matches wits with an unusual adversary:
https://youtu.be/Akj43UIAq8U
I'm wondering whether this cartoon didn't inspire the Sesame Street 30 dot sequences where there's one dot who keeps changing color just to mess up the show...

Cartoon of the Week -- One More Time
General | Posted 12 years agoWhat if Mickey and Minnie had been foxes instead of mice? They probably would have looked something like this:
https://youtu.be/31oW1K-25e4
"Foxy" was a short-lived Warner Bros. character obviously intended to capitalize on the success of the famous rodent. As this was the final cartoon of Foxy's career, one has to wonder if they were literally killing him off at the end of it...

Cartoon of the Week -- Punchy De Leon
General | Posted 12 years agoYet another Fox and Crow animated theatrical short by UPA:
https://youtu.be/sZKvMBa4OHw
Watching this always makes me think of St. Augustine, Fla, since that's where the real Ponce De Leon traveled in search of the fabled Fountain of Youth. It's also where Mike and I used to go for our anniversary each year close to around this time, back when we lived in Florida.

Bonus Vid of Christmas - On the 12th Day
General | Posted 12 years agoEver wondered what would happen if somebody actually gave ALL the gifts mentioned in "The 12 Days of Christmas" to the same person on each day from Dec. 25 to Jan. 5? You're about to find out...

The 11th Vid of Christmas -- The Cat's House
General | Posted 12 years agoAnother Soyuzmultfilm Russian animated featurette. While not a Christmas story per se, this tale does seem to take place from late fall to early spring:
https://youtu.be/oDbLk7xMS2Y
Sadly, YouTube took down the English-subtitled version, for while much of the plot is self-explanatory, it's always more fun to know just exactly what all the characters are saying (or singing, as the case may be).

The 10th Vid of Christmas -- B.C. - A Special Christmas
General | Posted 12 years agoA rarely-shown curio of a Holiday special from 1981 based on the comic strip B.C. by Johnny Hart:
Part 1:
https://youtu.be/8L6ZaSi5RvI
The voices of Peter and Wiley are the comedy team of Bob and Ray.
Part 2:
https://youtu.be/00du5MEeDSU
Of course, the whole concept of cavemen celebrating Christmas is a paradox that I'm sure both Hart and the creators of the animated special were well aware of, but it was (mostly) played for laughs, after all. And they weren't the only ones...

The 8th Vid of Christmas -- Hector's Hectic Life
General | Posted 12 years agoA long-time public-domain Holiday cartoon that dates back to 1948:
https://youtu.be/BDEO_1OwlH4
This is almost a scene-for-scene remake of a 1942 MGM short called "Chips off the Old Block" -- the only real differences being that the main character in the latter is a cat instead of a dog, and it isn't Christmas in this one:

The 7th Vid of Christmas -- The Snow Man in July
General | Posted 12 years agoThis is an English dubbing of a classic German animated short:
https://youtu.be/TxPOR8KBO0o
As is often the case with English dubs of foreign films, there is a lot of extraneous dialog added that was not part of the original work. If you'd prefer to see this with its German soundtrack, it can be viewed here.

The 5th Vid of Christmas -- Gifts From the Air
General | Posted 12 years agoLooks like I'll be posting a video journal each day until Christmas now, if I want to get to the 12th vid by Dec. 25.

Whenever I think I've seen every Christmas-themed theatrical cartoon ever made, I discover one that I've missed, such as this 1937 Columbia short. It was possibly inspired by Warner Bros. "The Shanty Where Santy Claus Lives" or by the less Holiday-themed Fleischer Bros. Somewhere in Dreamland that preceded it in 1936.

The 4th Vid of Christmas -- Scrooge & the Cookie Bear
General | Posted 12 years agoEverybody's heard of Cookie Monster, but did you know that there used to be a Cookie Bear? He made frequent appearances on the old Andy Williams variety shows of the sixties. Here's the cookie-loving bruin in one of Andy's Christmas specials.
https://youtu.be/ic416RB5Nxw
Andy plays Scrooge -- and yes, that's Jimmy Durante as Scrooge's conscience. I remember watching this sketch on TV when it was first run back in December of 1969. I was amazed at how much of it I could recall, over 40 years later!

The 3rd Vid of Christmas -- Chilly Chums
General | Posted 12 years agoChilly Willy, the cute-but-usually-obnoxious little penguin redeems himself somewhat in this cartoon:

Woody Woodpecker's cameo becomes even funnier if you are aware that Mel Blanc once actually sued Walter Lantz over Woody's laugh.

The 1st Vid of Christmas - Winter Draws On
General | Posted 12 years agoIt's getting harder to find enough videos to do an "Advent Calendar" for all 24 days, so this year I'm only doing half as many -- the 12 Vids of Christmas, as it were.
This first one is more of an autumn-to-winter video than a holiday one (there'll be plenty of those later):
https://youtu.be/9lqkEM9bJPI
The crow in the opening sequence would later star in his own cartoons as "Buzzy the Funny Crow."

Cartoon of the Week -- Bumble Ardy
