Adorable Kittens Free to Good Homes!
General | Posted 12 years agoWe have three 10 week-old kittens who need to be adopted very soon:
https://youtu.be/_43R55KYqPE
Scrappy, the black and white one is male. His sisters are Tigertail and Tawny. If we didn't already have four adult cats living inside the house, we'd keep them all...
All three are very healthy, happy, litter box trained and they love to be held and cuddled!
If you've been wanting a kitten and you live in or near the San Fernando area of Southern California, please PM me for more information.

Cartoon of the Week -- Jerry Mouse Meets Gene Kelly
General | Posted 12 years agoIn this classic clip from the 1944 movie "Anchors Aweigh," Jerry is an usually large (for a mouse) and strangely-grumpy king, being waited on by Tom:
https://youtu.be/UjRQFSYFuaI
Someday, I'm going to have to actually watch the rest of this movie, just to find out where this scene fits in context with the film's plot...

Cartoon of the Week -- The Sneezin' Weasel
General | Posted 12 years agoOddly enough, when I posted a journal spotlighting Flop Goes the Weasel, I lamented the fact that it was just a remake of this 1938 cartoon, but I couldn't find the original on YouTube. Years later, the situation was reversed!

That's Tex Avery doing the voice of the weasel, who almost gets the last laugh...

Animations of the Week -- Remembering Ray Harryhausen
General | Posted 12 years agoAs probably most of you already know, stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen died this week.
I saw The Golden Voyage of Sinbad in a movie theater when I was 9 years old. The following sequence left a big impression on me. (Guess which combatant I was cheering for?):
https://youtu.be/mzGw_4sCjfc
On a lighter note, the following is a rarely-seen version of The Tortoise and the Hare that was also animated by Harryhausen. The audio does not play all the way through this copy, but what you can hear features the voice of Gary Owens -- who, coincidentally, is celebrating his 77th birthday today!

Cartoon of the Week -- Destination Moon
General | Posted 12 years agoNo, it's not an animated version of the Tintin adventure. It's an except from the 1950 live-action movie:
https://youtu.be/nmp_TdbdQfc
Reportedly, this is the first time Woody's voice was provided by Grace Stafford (the character had previously been done by several other voice actors, including Mel Blanc and Ben Hardaway).

Cartoon of the Week -- Little Lamby
General | Posted 12 years agoBeen a while since I spotlighted a Max & Dave Fleischer cartoon.

Not to be confused with Little Lambkins, another Fleischer theatrical.

Cartoon of the Week -- Memorial Edition
General | Posted 12 years agoWhile we've probably all seen at least part of this show's opening at some point in our lives, here's the complete, original extended version -- in color!
https://youtu.be/qq6Kgf6Tnus
The memorial is, of course, for the most famous of the original Mouseketeers -- Annette Funicello, who died earlier this week.

Cartoon of the Week -- Lion in the Roar
General | Posted 12 years agoHere in this Paramount Noveltoon, we see yet another (early) Lion King-in-training, out practicing his little roar:
https://youtu.be/yNtqS2h_FeY
The narrator kind of sounds a bit like Don Messick, though I know it's not really him.

Cartoon of the Week -- Freddie, Get Ready
General | Posted 12 years agoA small boy has an animated dream on the Night before Easter:
https://youtu.be/wpbq7hriLpE
This clip from the 1949 feature film My Dream is Yours ends before the part where Freddie finally gets out of bed, sees his Easter basket and kneels before it as though in awe. Then his mother enters the room and hurriedly says, "Go back to bed, Freddie dear -- the Easter Bunny hasn't come yet." Turns out it was still the middle of the night!
Another movie which had a scene where a live-action character falls asleep and dreams of being with a couple of famous cartoon characters is MGM's Dangerous When Wet, circa 1953.

Cartoon of the Week -- The Disobedient Kitten
General | Posted 12 years agoAnother Russian cartoon find. The simplistic plot could have been told without any dialogue on the part of the animals, so no need to worry about what they're saying; just watch and enjoy.
https://youtu.be/gxsnYd3BWJg
While attempting to translate the title (Непослушный котёнок), one Russian to English online "translator" claimed that it meant "Naughty boy really gives me a pain in Tiki."

Cartoon of the Week -- Chicken Little PSA
General | Posted 13 years agoChicken Little learns the hard way to look both ways:
https://youtu.be/g8f9Oj6WxgU
Yes, that's Paul Frees as both the narrator and Chicken Little. Some say that Paul did a better Orson Welles than Welles himself.
This was found by

General | Posted 13 years agoThe first cartoon depiction of Robin Hood as an anthropomorphic fox did not come from Disney:
https://youtu.be/mWVhFeBu6fw
The Fox and the Crow was also once a long-running comic book series published by DC -- back when that company actually put out something other than superhero comics (seems hard to believe today, doesn't it?).

Cartoon of the Week -- Springtime Serenade
General | Posted 13 years agoFor Groundhog's Day, here's an actual Groundhog's Day cartoon:
https://youtu.be/iUgW4db1R-E
This 1935 Walter Lantz version of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is losing his rabbityness - at times he and his girlfriend look more like puppies or bear cubs. (Compare how he looks here with his appearance in this cartoon.)
Later, Oswald would become much more bunny-like, but at the expense of losing his black fur in favor of an all-white pelt.

Cartoon(s) of the Week -- Stokey the Bear and a PSA
General | Posted 13 years agoWhile most everybody's out at FC this weekend, here's a rarely-seen Dudley Do-Right cartoon from 1961 for us stay-at-homes:
https://youtu.be/hn2KDisoo5w
The U.S. Forest Service was not amused, and demanded that the episode be yanked from further airing, which it was. Only recently was it made available again via the complete Bullwinkle DVD sets.
In 1969, Jay Ward may have been attempting to mend fences by having Bullwinkle be a spokesmoose for the offended government agency:

General | Posted 13 years agoThe actual title of this cartoon is "There's No Such Thing as a Sea Serpent," but I couldn't fit that into the journal title:

Advent Cartoon -- The Brave Little Deer
General | Posted 13 years agoWe watched a clip from Bambi a few days ago. Now here's another Soviet cartoon, again from Soyuzmultfilm Studios, that was more than likely inspired by the same movie:
https://youtu.be/-7rlbAMfYl0
Hunters can breathe a sigh of relief here -- the only "villains" in this film are the harsh environment and natural predators (those poor starving wolves).

Advent Cartoon -- The Ragtime Bear
General | Posted 13 years agoThe very first Mister Magoo cartoon ever made:
https://youtu.be/0y33r9bilw8
The nearsighted old codger had a temper, didn't he? Over time, of course, he became less cantankerous and more eccentric, less jowly and more jolly. But Jim Backus's voice was what really defined the character. Jerry Hausner does all the rest of the voices in this cartoon, notably Magoo's nephew, the hapless idiot Waldo.
