Cartoon of the Week -- Who Killed Who?
General | Posted 13 years agoMore of a mystery-themed cartoon than a Halloween-themed one, although there are skeletons and ghostly creeps in a haunted mansion:

I also love the fact that almost the entire score was performed on a calliope.

Guess these short clips are better than nothing at all...

Cartoon of the Week -- Creeper Crawler
General | Posted 13 years agoAs Linus Van Pelt faithfully says at this time of year, "Halloween will soon be with us..." Here's a music video of what could possibly be considered a "pumpkin carol:"
https://youtu.be/pc72QCndK_k
And speaking of pumpkins, we're currently trying to help two little stray kittens who have feline scabies recover from this nasty skin disease. One of them is so badly affected, we had to name her Scruffy. The other one, her orange and white brother, we've appropriately named "Pumpkin."

Cartoon(s) of the Week -- Tootsie Pop & Mr. Bubble Ads
General | Posted 13 years agoThe complete, original version of the famous Tootsie Pop commercial. Hard to believe they're still showing a severely truncated version of this commercial after all these years.
https://youtu.be/yzhB0gF5GTI
The cow is voiced by Frank Nelson, Paul Frees did the fox and the owl is Paul Winchell. I forget who did the turtle.
As a bonus of sorts, here's my favorite old Mr. Bubble commercial with "Grandma Magoo":

Cartoon of the week - Greedy Humpty Dumpty
General | Posted 13 years agoRecently saw the Puss in Boots movie, and I couldn't help but make comparisons to the greedy, selfish gold-craving egg in that film to the titular character in this 1936 Max Fleischer short:

Both Humpties had hearts of gold -- that were hard, cold and yellow!

Remembering Jerry Nelson
General | Posted 13 years agoInstead of a Cartoon of the Week, I thought I'd take some time to remember classic muppeteer Jerry Nelson, who died a week ago:
https://youtu.be/XrAFle0W228
Not only is he the eccentric Prof. Nucleus Von Fission, he's also the voice of the announcer at the beginning of this clip.
Jerry performed the Count on Sesame Street, Kermit's nephew Robin the Frog on The Muppet Show and Gobo Fraggle on Fraggle Rock, along with many, many other muppet characters. His was also the voice of the announcer going "And now, PIGS -- IN -- SPACE!" as well as Dr. Strangepork (whose voice was similar to Nucleus Von Fission's).
R.I.P. Mr. Nelson.

Cartoon of the Week -- Unpack Your Adjectives
General | Posted 13 years agoA Schoolhouse Rock favorite, sung by Blossom Dearie:

Cartoon of the Week -- The Malingering Hare
General | Posted 13 years agoThis untranslated Russian cartoon really needs no translation:
https://youtu.be/qQ1xw4EaIb0
However, just in case you're stumped after watching it, here's what happened: A good-natured bear accidentally steps on the toe of a lazy, good-for-nothing hare. The hare carries on like he's been crippled for life, and the bear promises to take him home and look after him until he's better, giving up his own bed for the hare to rest in, feeding him carrots and entertaining the "invalid" with music every time the hare wails about his "injury." But while the bear's away, the hare dances around on perfectly healthy feet. This goes on for weeks until the hare demands that the bear find something other than carrots to feed him with, since he's become bored with them. The poor, worn-out bear goes in the woods to find something and encounters a fox. After hearing the bear's tale of woe, the fox (who no doubt has already figured out the hare's scheme) offers to accompany the bear as a doctor to examine the hare. I'm not certain just what the fox's "diagnosis" was (I'm guessing the fox said something along the lines of "We'll have to amputate that bad foot"), but whatever it was it terrified the hare into revealing its true colors and running away without the trace of a limp. The kind-hearted bear probably felt a bit foolish at the end, but seemed to take it well.

Cartoon of the Week -- Weasel Gets Drunk
General | Posted 13 years agoExcerpt from the animated series of The Animals of Farthing Wood:
https://youtu.be/1WJy9mglXn4
In the book by Colin Dann that this series was based on, Weasel was male and wasn't silly. There is a scene where all the animals get drunk after Toad falls into a puddle of spilled cider and gets tipsy, encouraging the other animals to do the same, which they do. I guess the script writers thought it would be "funnier" to make a troublemaker out of Weasel and have her be the only one who gets drunk. Frankly, I enjoyed the book version better.

Cartoon of the Week -- Dangerous When Wet
General | Posted 13 years agoTom and Jerry lend some helping paws to Esther Williams as she attempts to swim the English Channel in this excerpt from the 1953 (mostly) live-action film, Dangerous When Wet.

For those who have never seen this film, the grabby, amorous octopus and the well-endowed female fish represented two other live-action characters from the non-animated portion of the movie.

Cartoon(s) of the Week -- Kimba and the Money Cat
General | Posted 13 years agoIf, like me, you're a fan of Kimba the White Lion, you might find the following interesting. I have a feeling that this is just a small sample of what American audiences were missing out on when the series was dubbed into English (and considerably censored, mostly for violence that would hardly raise an eyebrow today):
https://youtu.be/edsruIjsTFU
Now that you've (presumably) watched that, compare it to the following clip from the UPA movie Gay Purr-ee (which was made some five years before the preceding):
https://youtu.be/cTiPr2l_6o8
Don't get me wrong -- I like both of these. And it was just one little song & dance routine in a Kimba episode, not an entire movie...

Cartoon of the Week -- Yankee Doodle Daffy

General | Posted 13 years agoVeteran cartoon voice actor Dick Beals died earlier this week. He was known for his perpetually child-like voice, which he provided for such characters as Davey from Davey And Goliath, Buzz, the child genius friend/master of Frankenstein Jr. and the iconic Speedy Alka-Seltzer mascot, among others.
From the cartoon series Roger Ramjet, he was also at least one of the American Eagle Squadron (Dan and/or Dee -- sometimes Dick and Joanie Gerber would trade off who voiced who). Both Beals and Gerber can be heard singing the famous Roger Ramjet theme song:
https://youtu.be/tCFWxZ1FA1I
And here's another "Roger" whom Beals voiced personally. This educational film, produced by Jam Handy circa 1950, is believed to be the first cartoon that he ever lent his voice to:

Thanks for the memories, Dick.

Cartoon of the Week -- Paraguay Parable
General | Posted 13 years agoContinuing last week's Aardvark theme:
https://youtu.be/CpAXXZLKVOQ
The credits at the end of this are incorrect. It says Ken Mitchroney did the storyboards. While Kenny did do a number of boards for the Timon & Pumbaa series, this particular episode was storyboarded entirely by
mkaz.
The "bug-catching montage" was also written by Mike -- he came up with all the visual gags for that sequence (my favorite is Timon pulling the gigantic cockroach out of the tree, screaming and then stuffing it back into the tree with a toilet plunger).

Though a typical, "Prey Outwits the Predator" romp, at least the weasel wasn't overly punished (until the very end), unlike so many cartoons where the whole thing is one long abuse-fest against the wolf/cat/fox/whatever. That baby bunny is so obnoxious, I can't help wishing the weasel could have succeeded, but I may be biased...
