Crazy busy
Posted 12 years agoJust felt like putting up a new journal. Been crazy busy here lately, but the centaur commissions should be done soon. I'm not the world's best at time management, especially when there's a ton of stuff to keep track of, but I'm trying to get better at it.
Wondering if anyone would be up for a livestream at some point?
I'll admit, I've been a bit lonely . . .

Draw a Centaur Day commissions
Posted 12 years agoBetween being busy with stuff and having wrecked shoulder joints, I don't open up for commissions very often - but I'm making an exception for Draw a Centaur Day : April 16th.
I'm taking 4 slots at $25 a pop.
Slots:
1.
deovacuus Scarred, tough middle aged bison taur
2.
xetsa pinto centaur girl
3.
seasaidh Weaver
Notes:
1. The character MUST BE A CENTAUR. Non-equine centaurs are awesome. If you want a hundred-legged Sonic-style tarantulataur with cyborg arms and dicknipples, then gtfo :) Nudity is OK, porn/abuse/fetishes I don't like aren't.
2. This will be a single character on a simple background with maybe a small prop, similar to this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/10354648/ but in color (if you'd like full color), because I actually want to be able to finish these in a timely manner. I work at high dpi so it will look good if you want to print it out.
3. I take payments via Paypal. Your slot is confirmed when the payment is.
4. To take a slot note me here on FA, not in the journal comments, please.

DRAW A CENTAUR DAY: APRIL 16
Posted 12 years agoIt's almost that time of year again, and I've come up with a bunch of posters to advertise Draw a Centaur Day: an arbitrary, nonsensical, purposeless and agenda-free art challenge.
No prizes will be distributed, no accolades will be given, no charities will be donated towards, no good causes will be furthered, no one's bills will be paid, no theories will be proven, no centaurs will be harmed. This is purely for the sheer fun of drawing a goofy mythological critter.
Any kind of centaur is OK, not just the horsey kind. And if you can't draw, you could also sculpt, write, compose music, whatevers! Have fun is all.
If you'd like a copy of one of the Draw a Centaur Day posters, you can grab one from my imgur gallery here: http://imgur.com/a/tSZsq You can also download the blank if you'd like to make one yourself.
Or reblog one from centaurcentral.tumblr.com (this is still a WIP) which has many inspiring examples of centaur artwork.

Art ideas
Posted 12 years agoWelp, I'm kind of bored. Anyone feel like throwing out ideas for things to draw? I'm not up to actually taking commissions but I would like some inspiration.
Weasyl Stomping Day

Ratha's Creature Kickstarter - funded!
Posted 12 years agoI wanted to thank the fans and all the people who helped us reach our Kickstarter goal. You're keeping me occupied and off the streets! XD
Ratha's Creature Kickstarter - last days!
Posted 12 years agoWell folks, we're in the last few days for the Ratha's Creature: the graphic novel Kickstarter and we're only a few hundred dollars short of our goal! It's been great seeing the support from the fan community, especially the artwork people have contributed to the Ratha Challenge to signal boost the project.
First published in 1983, Ratha's Creature is the story of a young female of a clan of prehistoric catlike creatures who call themselves the Named. Intelligent, self-aware and able to speak, they have formed a society and herd animals instead of hunting prey - but they live in a harsh, savage world, and their way of life is precarious, threatened by the raids of the Un-Named, their vicious, voiceless relatives. After a destructive forest fire, the resourceful Ratha conquers her fear of the "Red Tongue" and realizes that it is the weapon that may just give her clan the edge in their desperate battle for survival.
But she hasn't reckoned on how the rest of her clan will react to her creature, and she's about to discover that not all the Un-Named are as mindless as she's always been told . . .
Artists Dani Long, Tod Wills
formidonis, author Clare Bell
rathacat, publisher Sheila Ruth
SheilaRuth and myself have been working hard on the graphic novel version. I've been the cover artist for the new editions of the book put out by Imaginator Press, and here's the cool thing about that - I'm really just a fan! I read the original book back in 1983, when I was 9 years old, and I've been addicted to them ever since. The other two artists on the project are originally fan artists, too, and were selected in a contest that ran this past summer. Clare Bell has always been very interactive with and supportive of her fanbase, so this isn't just a job to pay the bills, it's Ratha-nerd's dream come true and a labor of love.

Ironic or just moronic
Posted 13 years agoSo, I read a glowing review of the new Discovery channel documentary series, "Africa". I'm always game for this sort of thing, so I go to their site to watch a clip.
The clip is not available in this country.
Which is Africa.
(I watched it later on youtube, but still).

Where I've been
Posted 13 years agoSo, I haven't been posting much stuff lately . . . a lot of time lately has been taken up with a BIG move, some of on my crafty side job, but most of it is being (pleasantly) devoured by a graphic novel job.
More details to come soon, but a few people have noted me to ask - which is very sweet - and in case anyone was vaguely curious I haven't died or ragequit or anything like that.
Cheers!

Internet access for the low low price of $12.50/hour
Posted 13 years agoJoy of joy of joys - the Internet Archive is putting up issues of OMNI magazine!
http://archive.org/details/omni-magazine
OMNI, which ran from the late 70's to the mid-90's, was a great mix of science and sci-fi/fantasy/horror fiction and art. The science articles were detailed but written in a easy to understand style, and they had a huge impact on my little developing brain. I especially loved the Anti-Matter section, which had little snippets of articles about weird stuff like UFOs, Bigfoot, and that sort of wacky stuff. It was instrumental in entrenching a love of science and science fiction in my developing brain. There was a strong emphasis on how developing technologies would shape the future - for example, I clearly recall reading about the then very science fictiony-sounding laser surgery to correct vision problems and wishing I could have it, because I was blind as a cave salamander and hated wearing glasses. Fast forward about 20 years, and yes, thank you OMNI, I did indeed get my nearsightedness zapped away. Neat!
I used to have a nearly complete collection dating from the mid-80's, which was destroyed when I was in college and my parents' basement flooded. Needless to say I'm thrilled to pieces to have the chance to flip through the old issues again.
(and of course it's fun to look back at the ads, for example the Compuserve price quoted above. The good ol' days!)

Weasyl?
Posted 13 years agoEveryone seems to be jumping ship . . . is there a good source of information on why Weasyl is the new site of choice? I'm wondering if I should be one of the cool kids and get a page there, too.
Things to do:
1. Finish my Nanowrimo.
2. Finish the big werewolf plush so I can pack up my sewing supplies.
3. Leave more comments on people's work, even though I always worry I sound like a dummy.

Frankenstorm
Posted 13 years agoIt looks like we're staring down the barrel of Hurricane Sandy, which is basically a winter storm with a chewy hurricane center, and expecting something like a foot of rain . . . considering the power here goes out if you sneeze, I'm expecting not to be around for a while.
So if I miss Halloween, which seems likely, y'all have a good one, and everyone else in the target area stay safe!
News and shit when I get back.

What to draw for Halloween
Posted 13 years agoUsually it's werewolves, but I kind of draw werewolves constantly. Any thoughts?
So, what're you going to be for Halloween?
Posted 13 years agoI won't really get a Halloween this year, since apparently it's not a "thing" in S. Africa. Savages! I am determined to cut out bats and spiders from construction paper, maybe carve a jack o'ostrich egg, and make everyone masks from paper plates, glitter, pipe cleaners and poster paint, and force them to trick or treat at our house.
If I was dressing up, I think I'd go as PETA Ash complete with a bloody, bandaged stuffed Pikachu: http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/08/p.....tional-animal/

Sony Pictures has picked up the rights to make a movie based on MANIMAL, the very short-lived 80's tv show about a guy who can turn into all kinds of different animals and (of course) uses his ability to fight crimes. He's sort of the Batman of TF enthusiasts, you could say.
It will come as a surprise to absolutely no one who knows me that I loooooooved this show when I was a kid (I was 9 when it came out). It was probably a major player in my liking werewolves and transformation sequences (and guys with sexy accents) so damn much, and thank the powers that be the internet didn't exist back then, because the first fanfic I ever wrote was for that show. And it was in a Choose Your Own Adventures format, which I guess goes to show that particularly amateur stylistic mishap was old before ff.net even came into being.
Tvtropes describes it as "aggressively silly" and I suppose it was, but kids don't have good taste, and I have a very high nostalgia-forgiveness threshold, so I have to say I am actually kind of thrilled about this. I'm only sorry I didn't get to write script.
Oh well . . . there's still Thundarr the Barbarian. Better get crackin' on that, I reckon.

Do you do this, too? Personally, I am not very good at recognizing faces - every time I go out, I hope to gawd the people I'm with are wearing something distinctively colored, or I end up wandering around lost and whimpering - so I find it much easier to remember people by their avatars. For the most part I have no idea how old or what race or gender the people I am talking to online are, and that doesn't actually bother me very much. I usually imagine most people as a. much younger than me and b. female, for whatever reason. Maybe it's because I have several younger sisters? Hard to say.
A forum I was on years ago had that as a thread topic, "how do you picture other members" and honestly, I didn't picture them at all, but when I thought about it I pictured them as a talking, cartoon version of their avatar. I remember one person said they pictured me a cultured, top hat and monocle wearing gentleman (and several other people agreed), which is pretty hilariously off base, but apparently it's because I used a lot of big words. Go figure. My avatar at the time, if I recall correctly, was a sock monkey.

It's that time again
Posted 13 years agoAnother year older and closer to death!
It's not so bad, getting older. I may have less life left, but lots of things have happened in the past year and now I actually have much more to look forward to than I felt I did when I was younger. Funny how that works out.
I think I'm a much better person than I was five or ten or twenty years ago. It's probably hard to believe since I know I have an (earned) reputation for being arrogant and reactive, but I'm less like that than I used to be - don't know if that's being older and wiser, or just slowing down. Still a work in progress, of course, like everyone else. Judging from my relatives, I may not be the healthiest specimen but I'll probably hang in there driving everyone else around me crazy well into my 90's.
Plus, we ate out a few days ago and I got carded when I ordered sangria. I may be ugly, but at least I look young and ugly, so that's a comfort XD

I will be SO GLAD to get away from this weather.
Popsicles
Posted 13 years agoI'm living on them.
Man, I cannot wait to move to a nicer climate. Yesterday I got to hang out with my one sister who lives far away yesterday. She won the genetic lottery - a few days in the sun and she turns a lovely, all-over shade of golden bronze. Me, I have the delicate, fragile complexion of a fairy princess or a blind cave salamander. I woke up today with the skin on my face all tight and hot, and feeling nauseous. I'll be peeling like a leper shortly, and be just as maggoty-pale underneath. Of course I can't bitch too much, since it's my own fault for being too neglectful to put on sunscreen.
The idea that you're being literally cooked by the sun has always grossed me out. It's like those urban legends of someone putting a hamster in the microwave or a baby in the oven, the thought of the mounting agony and terror, and being unable to escape or even comprehend what is happening to you, or why, it's absolutely horrifying. Everyone's got those weird little phobia things, I guess.
