The future of Frolic - come out in October!
Posted 9 years agoSo we've been thinking hard and long lately about the future of Frolic. We realize that Frolic is bigger than myself and those who helped found is 6+ years ago. Frolic is a community event that has helped bring together furries from around the Bay Area in a safe space they can socialize, dance, be themselves, dress as they like, be with friends and like minded people, and more.
You have probably all heard about the change of ownership of our venue, The Stud. The Stud has been more than just a venue to us, it's been a home full of family. My roots to the Stud go back to even before I moved to San Francisco. I remember my first time there back in around 1996 when I was traveling the country, and went for Trannyshack. It was memorable. When I moved to the Bay Area in 1998, the Stud became a home away from home, a place I could connect with other like minded people. As it grew, I grew. Somewhere along the way, I discovered furry, and was already friends with several promoters and staff of the Stud. Our first attempt to throw a furry party back in 2001 didn't last long, but our path with furry, or the Stud, wasn't over. In 2010, I was talking with the owner of the Stud about bringing back the Furry party, and in 2010 Frolic was born. And with that, our connections with the Stud grew even stronger, a bond that was stronger than a business relationship, and was more like family.
With the change of ownership comes change. The owner of the Stud is moving to Hawaii, Kristo has moved on as bartender. We have no doubt that the new owners of the Stud will do great things with the Stud, will be able to keep it in it's current location, and it will continue to thrive, and be as epic and amazing as ever, and provide a venue for those who just feel like they don't belong anywhere else.
For a long while now, we had been thinking of what to do with Frolic, even before this change of ownership. At times it felt crowded inside. More people were hanging outside than inside the venue. The fursuit lounge is insanely crowded. It gets really hot inside. We bring a ton of infrastructure and burn ourselves out every month spending many hours setting up and breaking down with what ends up being a 16 hour non stop day.
So please, do not think this change is about the new owners, it is not. That may be one factor, but it's not even a major one, as we know they would welcome us continuing and would do everything they can to help us keep going.
We will be taking a break for now, and our looking at other venues that may better suit those who enjoy coming to our event. We have many criteria, it has to be an LGBT friendly venue, well ventilated (or air conditioned), enough space for fursuiters, have decent parking around, changing space, and most importantly, have a very friendly furry-welcoming vibe.
Once we have something worked out, we will definitely let you know!
In the meantime, we hope you can join us this Saturday, for our final Frolic at the Stud.
And please, tip the bartenders, barbacks, and other staff of the Stud! They are hard working, and don't make those huge wages that make it easy to live in SF. Bartenders do not split tips in California, so feel free to give a little something to the other workers at the Stud to. They have been like family to us, and welcomed us with open arms. So whatever we can do to help them out with this transition, well, nothing could be a nicer gesture or way of saying thanks for having us at the Stud.

Frolic San Jose - 2016
Posted 10 years agoFrolic San Jose...
So many of you keep asking what is our plan for this year. Well, we really love doing this event when Further Confusion is in town, and really love that we are able to bring furries into the downtown nightlife of San Jose. There are so many wonderful venues, and we actually looked at a few new ones this year.
But, we have decided to take a break this year, and skip doing Frolic San Jose in January of 2016.
The reason is simple economics and weather. We rent out venues that have a high cost. We don't profit on doing this event, but we rely on bringing in a crowd to break even with the cost of the venue and productions.
This year is predicted to be the biggest El Nino year in history.
And they are even saying these recent storms we have been getting are not even part of El Nino. The El Nino storms will begin to hit around the end of December and run through early February. This means a high chance of heavy rains the entire month of January.
The San Jose convention center is great for it's all indoor access. Both the Hilton and the Marriot and the convention center are all accessible without ever going outside. But think about it, if it's pouring down rain, will you willingly walk a block in a fursuit in the heavy rain to go to a nightclub? Even if it's a great production, the chance of a heavy rain is just to high, and if the event got rained out and people stayed away, we'd still be on the line for the cost of the production.
So we'll be sitting out January 2016 in San Jose.
But don't worry, this is just for 2016, and we will be back!
We will still be having our regular Frolic in San Francisco at the Stud on January 9th, rain or shine! We also have some plans for some special events in 2016, including some cross over events with some other events, like we did at Booty (or maybe we'll be back at Booty at the end of January!)

Frolic San Jose DJ Lineup
Posted 10 years agoNow that we know there's no rain for Saturday, we can release the lineup!
Bar room:
8pm - 9:30pm Raid Zero
9:30pm - 11pm Sean BASS
11pm - 12:30am Forest Green
12:30am - 2am NeonBunny
Patio:
8pm - 9:30pm Midekai & Shale
9:30pm - 11pm Recca
11pm - 12:30am Genki
12:30am - 2am LycanCatt
For those who arn't familiar with the djs, we have a wide variety of styles of music, and we've managed to talk a couple of high end professional djs to come out and share their skills with you. Deep House, Funky House, Electro House, even some hardcore. Unfortunatly, with only so much time and space, there was no room for any Dubstep nor Trap nor Hip Hop, so unfortunately, there will be none of that this year.
Also, people keep asking "how can I dj at Frolic in San Jose". Well, we have a couple of deciding factors that influence the djs we pick.
We'd love to have more out of town DJs who are in town for the convention, but alas, we don't know who's going to be in town, and we try hard to not have the same djs as every major furry convention, because you can already see them everywhere, so that wouldn't make us special if we just copied the content from every convention, now would it? And we are all about providing a unique, one of a kind experience, you can't get anywhere else. Not just with the music, but also the venue, the lighting, everything in general!
Plus, seems like every out of town dj we asked, they were only planning on going to FC if they are booked to dj the convention, and only go to cons if that's happening, so had no plans to attend.
So, the factors we do care about:
- Are they good (track selection as well as technical ability and ability to connect with the crowd/vibe. Must know how to dj, no pre-planned sets, no computers doing all that shit for you).
- Are the styles of music they play what people really want to hear?
- Are they skilled/experienced djs who have played professional events before?
- Is the fandom already over saturated with them djing? (see above)
- How connected with the furry fandom are they?
Of course, there are other deciding factors, and we don’t use a point system for anything. We've been doing this a long time, and use our best judgement for what we think you want. As part of not wanting to copy other dance events, we don't want to copy ourselves, and try and mix it up and give you something different each year. If you came last year, you saw it last year, so why would you need to see it again this year?
So, especially if you are friends with or know a good dj from out of town who regularly goes to FC, let us know! Tell them to find us and talk to us this year about next!

Further Confusion!!!
Posted 10 years agoSo excited for FC and Frolic, and so much yet to do! The venue is brand new, and really nice as it is, with state of the art sound system. Of course, we're all about one-upping ourselves, and adding our own touch to any venue (in this case lighting and video as the sound is already perfect!), and providing a quality event unlike anything you can experience anywhere else, with the music, visuals, and vibe being something you can only experience at Frolic.
Which all translates to we've got so much to do in this next week to get ready for FC! We'll be there Thursday night, staying for the entire convention. We have multiple SUVs hauling all our stuff down there, and SmashWolf Productions will be suplimenting our gear with some of their own. Next year, we might have to buy a box truck to start getting our AV gear around!
Oh yea, and we have Frolic shirts for sale. For sale online only, for pickup at FC. We can't sell them at FC as we don't have a vending permit, and will most likely be too busy at Frolic to sell shirts. So buy one now for pickup if you're interested! http://frolicparty.com/store

Furries in the Wild 4
Posted 11 years agoOnce a year we like to give back to all those who have enjoyed furry dance events by organizing a free, outdoor, daytime party and picnic.
This event is open to everyone of all ages, and there is no charge for anything (donations will be accepted though!).
We'll have music all day long from some of your favorite furry djs, free drinks (non alcoholic), and more. You are welcome to bring your own beer or drinks, as long as you are over 21 and don't share with any minors.
Free food! Hot dogs, burgers, and more!
This is being held in the same site as the last 3 years, in Joaquin Miller Park, in Oakland. It's a beautiful park located in the Oakland hills overlooking the bay. The coastal cooling and prevailing winds ensure that even on the hottest day in July, it shouldn't get that warm.
We hope you will join us!
More info is up at http://frolicparty.com/furries/
We have also set up a paypal account to accept donations. We currently have expenses of about $450 for permits, and will be spending about $400 on food/drinks to have enough food and water/sodas for about 200 people. We could use any help you can send our way!

Why the Yiff?
Posted 11 years agoWe get this question alot. If you arn't a sex club or encouraging sexual activity at Frolic, then why do you have the Yiff logo, fur panel, stamp, etc?
Well, here are our thoughts on that.
Why the Yiff - by NeonBunny
I remember when I was a young child growing up on military bases. My school was very culturally diverse, I had friends were raised in multilingual were German, Korean, Spanish, Chinese, and more. I remember when as kids friends would share their language, it was always the curse words we were most interested in. Maybe it's a boy thing, but by learning these forbidden words of a friend's language, it was kind of like being invited into a secret club, knowing the deepest darkest secret of that culture.
Fast forward to being an adult, finding furry culture, and then learning about the deep dark secrets (contrived or real) of the world of furries. And we have the secret words of this sub culture, of which a dominant one is Yiff.
So do we allow sex at Frolic? Absolutely not. The Stud Bar is a gay nightclub. Gay does not mean fuck anywhere. Nightclub does not mean fuck anywhere. San Francisco does allow sex clubs, but the Stud is by no means one. State and local laws say that any venue that serves alcohol must have all naughty bits (penis, anus, nipples for women) covered at all times. Any sexual activity is also illegal. Anyone caught breaking any laws will be asked to leave and will be banned.
We also strive to create a safe space where people can express themselves through costume, dance, community, etc. This means we do not allow excessive cruising or harassing behavior. We realize for some that expressing themselves might mean running around in their underwear. Or leather gear. Or puppy gear. Or Zenti. All this is fine. But just because someone is in their underwear does not mean they want you to play with their bits. No means no, stop means stop, anything otherwise is harrasment. And sex also means any sexual activity. Jerking someone off through their underwear, while yes, technically does mean their bits are covered, is still illegal.
Anyways, all that being said, we realize Yiff is a part of life. As we celebrate anthropomorphic culture, those cute fursuits or drawn critter, and the animalistic aspect, we realize that one of the most human aspects of the fandom is sex. Real animals do not go up to nightclubs in hopes of hooking up. Humans do. So be a human at home, but feel free to be an animal up at Frolic.
We have this shared culture, we even have a shared language. That just shows how strong our culture is, shows that we are not just a passing fad, but something that is here to stay.
Rejoice in that celebration, celebrate it. But realize there is also a time and a place for everything.
Thank you for listening, and we look forward to seeing you next month!. Oh, and we'll have shirts with the Yiff! logo for sale at Frolic next month!

Frolic San Jose - Thank You and next year!
Posted 11 years agoThank you so much to everyone who came out.
The event was off the hook, great crowd, but no waiting in line at the door, great djs on a thumping sound system with bass that made the floor rumble, and lots of great fursuits!
We heard that you really liked using the downstairs area for the fursuit lounge. That worked out well!
So, what about next year? This is where we need your feedback.
The Agenda may or may not be there next year. They are turning the downstairs into a restaurant, so we might not have it for music again, although the same setup as this year might be an option.
We are looking at other venues, ones that might be larger, where we could have 2 rooms of music as well as a large fursuit lounge, and an even better sound system and lighting. But here's the questionable part. All the best venues are a little further away, about 5-6 blocks (over by the PF Change, Flames, Gordon Biersch). About a 15 minute walk on foot. If we did move this far, we'd hire a bus that would just circle back and forth all night (no extra cost). Would this extra distance make a difference for you if it would provide an even better space?
And as for content, what are your thoughts on that? Who would you like to see next year (and feel free to think big!)

And as for content, what are your thoughts on that? Who would you like to see next year (and feel free to think big!)

Frolic San Jose - Artist Bio - Genki
Posted 11 years agoHailing from Virginia Beach, Genki has proven himself to be one top Freeform Hardcore producer and DJ, and become a staple of furry and anime conventions around the country, as well as quite a few massive raves and club nights in the Virginia Beach area. In the spirit of a very talented DJ, Genki will often play a set slightly different than his usual, as he may just do for us at Frolic, so you know you will hear something unique and different and not repeated if you also hear Genki spin elsewhere this weekend.

Frolic San Jose - January 18th, 2014
Posted 11 years agoDue to popular demand, we are bringing Frolic back to San Jose, happening the same weekend as our favorite furry convention Further Confusion!
Our goal is not to compete with the awesome parties on the party floor, the late night panels, or the official FC dances, but rather to provide you yet another option for something fun to do, and another reason to come to Further Confusion. We are lucky in that the convention center is right in the heart of downtown, right next to the main party strip of San Jose where all it's best nightclubs are located, and we've managed to secure one of those awesome nightclubs to use on Saturday night! No other furry convention anywhere has anything like this (nor anything like the party floor)! So for those furs who like the nightlife, Further Confusion is the convention to go to!
Part of the reason that no other event can successfully copy what we do, is that even we don't copy ourselves! We are always striving to update our content, and this year is no different. We will be at the same venue as last year, but we have been digging the last year to find the absolute best djs in the fandom. We don't care about who can put together the best demo on their computer at home, and we don't run like a contest, instead we look for who are the absolute best performers and what djs are the absolute best at filling the dance floor and keeping it filled.
For those who know us, they know we'll have great djs and vjs and go all out creating a great vibe and environment full of visuals, art, great music, for dancing, lounging, and hanging out. This year is no different. But for those who do care about who the djs are, we'll slowly be rolling out over the next couple of weeks, bios and prior recording of live performances by some of our djs.
For those who did not make it out last year, the event is at the Agenda Lounge. We'll have fliers and posters at FC which will have a map on how to get there, but for those who want to use google maps and see how close it is (the distance from the Marriott to our venue is shorter than the distance from the Hilton to the Marriott), the address is 399 S. First Street, San Jose.
The event will run from 8pm until 1:30am. We will have drink specials early, for those on a thrifty budget, or who might just want to check us out and have a drink before partying back for the FC dances or party hopping on the party floor.
We will have a space for fursuiters to cool off behind the scenes, with fans and plenty of drinking water. You are welcome to bring your bin with you and change there if you like, but there is no coat check. We will make sure only fursuiters are in the fursuit area though, so you can have some privacy.
We'll have a slightly different pricing structure this year too, which warrants some explaining.
$15 no fur
$10 some fur
$5 full fur
First, we have to charge a cover in order to cover the large expenses of using this venue. We are not an event sponsored or even officially affiliated with FC, and as such, we have different expenses to cover.
$15 no fur - this means, those who show up in normal street clothes, those who you'd have no idea were a furry except for maybe those badges hanging around their neck, or a t-shirt with some furry art on it.
$10 some fur - Got a tail? Ears? Kigamu? Skunk hoodie with ears? Leather puppy mask? Something that would make you stand out on the streets as being one of those people, those animal people!
$5 full fur - This includes, but is not limited to full fursuiters. Also includes partial fursuiters, full rubber anthro outfits, really anything costume that transforms your entire human self into something else.
Frolic is a 21 and over event, and we will ask for ID!
A reminder of a couple of things to not bring:
-Weapons (including pocket knives)
-outside beverages (this is a bar, support them, and we will have plenty of free drinking water inside).
-Graffiti tools

Further Confusion - Just over 1 month!!!
Posted 12 years agoOn the fence about going to Further Confusion in 2014?
Maybe we can help you decide.
Many of you already know that there is nothing like Frolic anywhere. A fun, fast paced, high energy, fun, social dance club environment. Further Confusion is our local convention, and once again we plan to bring Frolic down to the South Bay to coincide with our favorite convention. And this event will be even bigger and funner than our regular event in San Francisco.
Now you can go to so many furry conventions and get alot of the same experience, but none of them will have anything like Frolic. Further Confusion is still having it's dances, full of great djs, kick butt light shows, all the fun stuff you know and love and experience at every major furry convention. But quicker than it would take you to get back to your hotel room, you can bounce back and forth between the FC dances, and our event which is unlike anything you can get anywhere else less than a block away. Combined with the fact that Further Confusion is the only large furry convention with an official party floor, you know that this year's FC will live up to it's reputation of being the THE furry convention for those who enjoy the nightlife.
So make your plans, book a room, book a flight, register with Further Confusion right now, and plan on coming out and enjoying Further Confusion, and stop by our party on Saturday night. And stay tuned as we release the details of what we have planed for our fun event, which will surely top what we did last year!

Frolic updates!
Posted 12 years agoThanks to everyone who came out to Frolic at Bootie, where we hosted a room at one of SF's top themed nightclub nights at the DNA Lounge. We had a blast, and hope you did too! We hope to be able to repeat this event a couple of times a year, and now that they know what fursuiters are all about, I think we'll be able to make it a little easier on the suiters next time (like no cover all night, and having the green room just for the suiters and glitter free.)
Throughout the year, in addition to our regular monthly, we have a few additional Frolic events that we enjoy doing. Next up, in January, we plan to bring Frolic back to San Jose while our local furry convention, Further Confusion, is in town. We have been planning the details, and hope to bring you some of the most talented and experienced dj's we can find, and creating a fun, playful, dance environment where you can hang out, socialize, drink, and of course, dance!
We welcome your input for what you want to see for this event. As well as feedback on last year's event in San Jose, so we can know how to improve this experience for you!

2 Frolics in October!
Posted 12 years agoYup, you heard us right!
On Saturday, October 12th, we are doing our usual Frolic in our usual location. http://frolicparty.com
On Saturday, October 19th, we will also be collaborating with Bootie, the world's biggest mashup party, and also voted the best club night by the SFBG multiple years in a row. Bootie is at the DNA lounge which is a huge venue. We will be taking over 2 of the 4 rooms that bootie uses, 1 as a fursuit lounge, and the other will have Frolic DJs and VJs. Everyone can wander around the entire venue.
Check our images, and you'll see a poster for both events!

Furries in the Wild 3 - July 27th
Posted 12 years agoOnce a year we like to give back to all those who have enjoyed coming to Frolic by organizing a free, outdoor, daytime party and picnic.
This is being held in the same site as the last 2 years, in Joaquin Miller Park, in Oakland. It's a beautiful park located in the Oakland hills overlooking the bay. The coastal cooling and prevailing winds ensure that even on the hottest day in July, it shouldn't get that warm.
We hope you will join us!
