Pinup Art
Posted 6 years agoI love drawing pinup-style anthro art, I just don't do it often. It's a good way to observe some anatomy and play with lighting and techniques that I don't use in the comics themselves. Most of these pieces don't take very long for me to do either and are very quickly done.
Expect to see more of it from time to time. It's a good warmup for me and a good way to practice art outside of the Space Pawdyssey space. Apologies for the sharp contrast between the very sweet comic and the more lewd pinups. There won't be anything posted here above Mature.

Comic Schedule
Posted 6 years agoFog City, ECCE and a heavy work load mean that my drawing time is going to be limited. I'm going to try to keep on schedule but I may miss a comic or two over the next two weeks.
Space Pawdyssey Animated
Posted 6 years agoHi folks,
So it looks like there will be a small Space Pawdyssey short created to help promote the comic. It will be a small 30-40 second clip followed by a title banner. The clip itself will be done by Knuckledown Studios and I'll be getting my fiancee to help with storyboards. There's no spoken dialog in the skit but Felix and Rowan will laugh and sigh so you'll get to hear them for the first time.
The downside is the price -- but it will be a nice piece of commissioned art that will help support my buddies at Knuckledown and brings these characters to life in an animated form.
Hope to have updates soon. We should have something to show by May!

Lex and Future Stories
Posted 6 years agoLex's arc in Space Pawdyssey should be pretty obvious by now. He cares for very little outside of himself and Toby. He hates change. He really hates authority. He's not fond of the Alliance.
Of course this will change. He's growing to like being part of a group -- primarily because of Felix and Rowan. He'll continue to distrust the Alliance and give Connor grief for a good time to come. I have a story planned with him and Connor down the road should we get there. Eventually -- years after the events of the comic -- I see Lex as eventually becoming a respected Alliance Captain.
I have in my mind the story arcs that would make up the core story of Space Pawdyssey. I know where the big end is should I ever get there and I know each little story (at least as an outline) that will be involved in getting there. I'll be very curious to know if I ever get to that point -- if I ever reach the end I have in my mind and if I am able to continue beyond that ending. There are three big arcs planned which as a whole would cover about 3 years worth of comics before I'd be at that point. That's a lot -- but not when you consider that Space Pawdyssey turns three years old this coming July and will cross 250 comics this month.

Felix
Posted 6 years agoThis character has really grown on me a lot. Space Pawdyssey was supposed to be primarily about Felix but it has since very much been about the cast as a whole. Still, I find him an entertaining -- and challenging -- character to write.
If it's not evident already, Felix has some issues and is a character full of opposites. He is socially awkward but also genuinely friendly. He flips between being distracted and laser-focused depending on the task. He's naive but also keenly perceptive. So far it has worked.
And now he wants desperately to get back into space but the idea seems to be causing him anxiety...
Find out why over the next two weeks!

New Page - Vol 3
Posted 7 years agoFinally Page 1 of what will be Volume 3!
This was a fun page to do. I had to go back and reference some of my older comics so I could get a good feel for the ships when I drew them. It was neat to draw these -- I haven't drawn them in a good long time and I was impressed at how nicely they came out. My control on the tablet has gotten significantly better.
I'm also very fond of how the art has changed over the years even though I still consider even the oldest comics to have their charm.
Felix remains undeterred and a bit naïve. His sense of self-preservation seems to be all but missing at times.
Toby will be in tomorrow's comic. Etzel will make an appearance in a week.

No comic today
Posted 7 years agoNo comic today.
I'm going to spend tonight doing up some concept art for Vol3 and a banner. Later this week I'll be packing for a trip to the sourthern US to help my fiancée move the rest of his belongings. I've also go to play catch-up on housework before I leave.
I hope to be back to publishing pages no later than Oct 17th.
I may stream tonight. Seems like a decent idea.

Upcoming Break
Posted 7 years agoAfter this week I’ll be taking a brief break before working on Volume 3. I will be on vacation Oct 6-15 and there was no point in publishing a couple comics and then being away when I could better use the time to work on figuring out some key details first.
So this Thirsday will mark the end of Volume 2!
Volume 3 starts Oct 18!

Coil
Posted 7 years agoCoil was a late addition to the second volume script. Originally the gang was supposed to take on Angus and Bull (the Bison and Bull Terrier) in a warehouse but it seemed the two would be pretty outmatched against the good guys. I decided to round out the numbers by adding in Coil and Tandy.
Coil's design is based on the fursona I started to use when I started writing Space Pawdyssey so in a way he's based on me. His clothing is based on Bill Gates. He's very much an older Felix. More composed and less naïve but also very clever, lacking a few social skills and often oblivious to dangers round him.
He ended up being a fun little character. He's a villain but only loosely. He's also going to be the big connection to the next volume so expect to see more of him.

Accomplishments
Posted 7 years agoSo, Space Pawdyssey is approaching a few notable milestones:
- Page 200 will be published next week.
- The first trade paperback is available for purchase on IndyPlanet
- We are at 886 Tumblr followers, The website also gets about that many unique user visits. There are also 429 of you watching here on FA!
- Volume 2 should be done in September. Depending on finances, I may see about getting it printed in the near future.
Not bad for a little indy comic.

Anthrocon
Posted 7 years agoI'll be going to Anthrocon this year -- not as a vendor but just to go. One year I may go as a vendor -- if I can get a good collection of stuff I would be willing to sell and the means to get it there.
I'll be heading up on the morning of the 5th. After the convention I'll be helping my fiancé move up to Calais, Maine and will spend the week helping him pack and driving up with him. That said it will mean a 1-1.5 week break in comics more than likely (unless I can churn out a TON of comics between now and then).
Also, my PC fan has been making a racket so I'm a bit leery about it's reliability at the moment. :\

Toby the Prince
Posted 7 years agoSo is Toby a prince?
The answer is obviously a bit less straightforward. I can guarantee it's not as simple as it seems.
Of course Felix's curiosity is peaked. He knows Toby's not being entirely honestly but he's also not entirely lying and being a little fox he's not gonna drop the subject easily.

Connor comic
Posted 7 years agoDebating touching base with what Connor is up to. I have a good page in mind for it but I hate breaking away from the current action. Might do it anyway.
Also, Connor is doing the politics thing -- no something to delve too deeply in. I'd hate to bore everyone.

Printing Comics
Posted 7 years agoTime for Round 2 of printing comics!
I'm going to the East Coast Comic Expo in Moncton next month and needed to print out some Space Pawdyssey comics. I have some of the preview issue and I'm also printing off issues with sample pages from throughout the comic's first two years. Wartooth provided the artwork for the cover.
I've also got a cover now for the trade paperback. This will collect the first storyline (113 pages) into a single volume with cover art by Wings & Strings (Tomas Coletti). It won't be ready in time for ECCE but I hope to send the first order to the printers this weekend and get a proof done up. If the proof is decent, I'll look into options for doing orders for anyone who would like a copy.
Sadly, shipping from Canada is not cheap. :<

Man, it takes so long to tell a tale
Posted 7 years ago165 comics in and I've been doing this now for 1yr and 9months (give or take). It's so neat to read the comics end to end but man, when you look at how long it takes to get a story to completion.
The first story spanned 112 pages. An entire year (if I hadn't missed a couple). This arc and the downtime arc will probably be in that same ballpark. Seems crazy.
Worst part is, I have places I want to get to with the characters but it will take a while -- if we get there at all. Ah well. All I can do is continue writing!

410 Tumblr Followers!
Posted 7 years agoJust noticed I had 410 followers and nearly as much now on FA! (390+) Not sure where you all came from but thank you so much!
I’ve finished 162 comic pages so far. 162 will be available at the end of the week. That’s honestly rather impressive I think for something that is being done as a hobby in what little spare time I have (I have a full time job, a part time job and own a business) and something I did to improve my art.
When I started out, I had a good idea where I wanted the comic to go in terms of the story. I had an outline and some key pages thought out. I would try to write a good 10+ pages in advance. Lately it’s been a bit more “play it by ear” than I would like as I’ve been busier than usual but I still have an outline of what happens. I know how it ends. I know key points in between.
That’s not to say things change. This arc changed in a few notable ways. The first arc changed a fair bit too, as I have mentioned before (Etzel’s death).
A lot of the changes end up tone related. The comic is a lot more lighthearted than it was planned to be and I like it that way honestly. There’s enough angst out there in other media. Bull and Angus (the terrier and ox) are a lot less “evil” than planned. They are bad guys – definitely – but far less competent.
Even Lex’s kidnapping is different. Bull and Angus were always meant to show up again to kidnap Lex. That was planned ages ago and it’s the reason the pop up a couple of times in the first arc. Originally, I hadn’t planned for Rowan to find Lex at the park. She was supposed to find his hoodie with some blood on it. I’ve been enjoying having the two bond as friends and took the opportunity for more of that and it made the scene a bit more kid friendly.
I’ve also introduced Tandy and Coil for this next arc. Coil is based on Steve Jobs and plays the role of coyote super genius. Tandy is a robot named after the old Tandy computer. Honestly, they were introduced to give the good guys a bit more of a challenge but Coil will also tie things into later arcs.

Cleaning out the closets
Posted 7 years agoIt's been over a year since my ex moved out and I'm looking at all of the crap in the house that I need to sift through and reorganize. I called him up to see if there was anything else he wanted. Otherwise, I'm hoping to get at least a bag full of stuff out of the house per week that I don't need or want and either take it to the dump or an appropriate charity/recycling. 5 bags done so far. It has been stressful but also therapeutic in a way.
The goal is to reorganize my spare bedroom, set up a dedicated studio/work area for Fred and I and get as much space free as possible in the basement for filming/doing puppet stuff. I want to make this house as much his as it is mine although I know that is a tall order -- it's hard to move into a space that belongs to someone else. Still need to pick up a desk and some tools and a few little things to ensure we have everything we need.
Still working through the paperwork for divorce and hopefully I get the mortgage moved over tomorrow. The house is now officially mine and I've transferred what funds I owed to my ex so that's all taken care of. He's doing well which is good. We're separated but still on good terms. I hope it stays that way. I hope to get my divorce finalized soon. It amazes me how easy it is to get married but how hard it is to get a divorce even if you are both on good terms. It's not even that it's hard -- there are just a number of lengthy steps involved. It's not quick.
It's been a long and expensive process and I know there are more expenses to look forward to. It is worth it.

Thursday's comic is almost one. I just need to work on backgrounds and shading.

Comic stuff!
Posted 7 years agoI tend to think a lot about the comic -- where it is going, what it may be building up to, etc. There's an end goal. It's a very long term one but it does exist. Going forward there will be a lot of little arcs but there will be a larger narrative that I hope to eventually cover.
What's interesting as well is that I tend to tone down the violence the more I think about the comic and the characters. The current two bumbling antagonists are no exception. They were originally planned to be much more mean and frankly murderous in their intentions. Now -- not so much.
That's not to say there won't be very dark and very "evil" antagonists at some point. But I've been enjoying the lighter tone of the story and I don't want to pull from that just yet.
Expect a lot of Rowan, Toby and Felix in the next arc as well as a lot of Lex. I'm really hoping to push some of their stronger traits to the forefront -- Felix's resourcefulness and Rowan's tenacity. We'll also get to see a bit more of "angry" Toby and Lex and how they each deal with the situation.
Also expect to see Grant (Rowan's Dad) again at some point in upcoming stories. Rose will be back too.

Life Updates
Posted 7 years agoI'm currently in the process of building an art studio in my spare room. This would include a sound booth, desks, workspace (with 3D Printer). It would be a space for Fred and I to work on comics, cartoons, puppets and various other art projects.
That said, we also met with an immigration lawyer yesterday to find out the full details on what would be required for him to move to Canada. It looks like spousal sponsorship is the way to go. We had been looking into marriage but were interested to know if he could apply for residency prior. So this is going to be an interesting (and expensive) year ahead as I finish jumping through the legalities of my current divorce and then start planning for my future.

Comic 150 and a break
Posted 7 years agoTomorrow I'll be posting comic #150! That's pretty crazy to think about.
I have company arriving from Tennessee tomorrow so for the next couple of weeks I'll be a little more preoccupied than usual. I do have comics 150 and 151 finished with 152 penciled so things are moving along but I can't guarantee that I won't miss a comic or two sometime in the next two weeks. I'll try my best to keep on track. Fred isn't down for as long as usual (10 days) and we both work while he's here so I will likely try to spend as much time as I can with him.
I'll do what I can though -- too much exciting stuff coming up to miss too much time :V
