Life, the universe, and becoming a snep.
Posted 6 years agoAbout half a year ago, I started to feel much less wolfy and more feline. I can't pinpoint any specific reason, but I was going through several dark periods combined with a severe bout of existential depression. Who am I? What is my purpose here? Why do I even bother waking up? Even writing this, I'm still adrift with no firm ground beneath my worn paws. In the sky above, only a few stars guide my way through the thick, muddy underbrush.
Somewhere during this turmoil, I'd changed, became even more aloof and withdrawn, and felt that my wolf side no longer represented my alter ego.
I'd always told myself, if I had a pet, I'd get a cat. But that's a responsibility I dare not take on at this time in life. But what if I was a cat? A big cat. Something not too big yet fluffy, with a striking pattern and a calm demeanour. After reading up on sneps I was sold. Part of the switch is to represent a step forward into the future. Another is to explore what I've never explored over all this years in the fandom - to properly develop a fursona as a character. Exploration, not just an anthro version of me. Did I mention they have long, luxurious tails?
I think during Confuzzled I've told most I've met of my species change, and I apologize if I did not. Some have expressed surprise at the change, but I think it's time I stopped being scared and just try. Failure is a necessity of invention, or perhaps... re-invention.
For the next two months I'm _mostly_ off work. It's not healthy for my bank account, but I think it will be a good time to reflect on the past, and figure out what I want in the future.
As for my name... well I'm not changing that. I gave it some thought, and decided, nope, Gallen still fits me. Just like Curzon became Jadzia, inside, they're still Dax. Ok so maybe it's not the best analogy, just the best I can come up while I'm procrastinating from rearranging my entire room lol.
I'm getting a new badge done by the art maestro
bhavfox, and once I'm back at work I'll look into getting some refs done. I see several facets of myself, one snep that's an alter-ego to my muggle self, another where I envison myself in a better future, another in a dystopian era, and several others as I sort though exactly what I need from life.
I'm looking forward to Confuzzled 2020. Meowr good reader. Meowr. 42

Driving!
Posted 7 years agoI got my driving license about a month ago! Squee! I can finally get out and visit parts of BC that have no public transport!
I was contemplating buying an old NA mx5, because, pop-up headlights + rwd + convertible ftw, but after running the numbers, and considering the opportunity costs, I decided not to. The money would do me much better earning dividends in a tax shelter lol :3
Instead, I've opted to get on a few car shares. In British Columbia, new learners are issued a so-called "Class 7" aka "N" licence, and we'll have that for two years, after which I can take a test to get a full "Class 5" licence.
N license drivers are only allowed one passenger, and among other things, not allowed to use electronics while driving. That means no gps, which is a pain. I'm using paper maps and I don't always get off on the right exit, which is fun in its own way, as I'm driving purely for pleasure, not as a means of transport.
Only two car shares allow N drivers to sign up, Modo and car2go.
The former is brilliant, lots of vehicles to choose from. Car2go only had Diamler vehicles, so only Smartcars, and some Mercedes sedans/suvs. I've been using Modo mainly - been waiting for my car2go application to go through - and it's been a blast.
My favourite car thus far is the Mazda 3 Sport. If I had to buy a car, that would be it. Not too big, good power for hillclimbs and getting on highways, and I feel very confident driving it. Price is spot on too.
Modo has some other interesting cars that pique my fancy, like the Scion FR-S. That's a proper sports car, and I'm gonna wait till I've got more experience before I rent it.
Other cars I've driven include your run of the mill Priuses, Fiat 500s, Hondas etc. Interestingly, there're quite a few Fiat Abarths for loan. I'd be keen to try one, there're some really nice twisty roads in BC that was really fun with a Prius. The Fiat 500 I took for a spin had really aggressive handling, so I'd imagine the Abarth would be even more fun on a twisty road.
Can't wait for the weekend, should be taking a nice long drive somewhere :3

Confuzzled 2018 - Let's Play! Game Jam!
Posted 7 years agoYay! The full list of completed titles can be found on the Cfz site at: https://2018.confuzzled.org.uk/gamejam/
Unfortunately I'm on a mac and can't play most of the games. I must say there are a few furry convention themed games that I really want to try:
- Trivial Fursuits
- Conpanic
- Lounge Liason
- Confuzzled Simulator
- Bunfight (ok so it's not conventioned theme but it's a bunny with swords... what could go wrong?)
Looking forward to check out the other devs irl on the game jam event on Saturday!
EDIT: Uploaded on GameJolt! You can play the game in a browser now :)

Sooo pumped for Cfz 2018
Posted 7 years agoA few days ago, Confuzzled announced their Game Jam, perfectly in keeping with this year's Let's Play theme
https://2018.confuzzled.org.uk/gamejam/
It was fantastic news to wake up with in the morning. It's just over two weeks to go for submissions, and I hope I'm gonna be able to make it in time!
The game I'm dev'ing is a 2D side scrolling shooter that's gonna pay homage and tribute to the greats of the 80s and 90s, and some obscure personal faves :) Will be focusing on a basic, "casual" kind of game play that everyone should be able to win at, and am hoping to squeeze in a Bullet Hell mode. Yes, you can never get Dodonpachi out of a wolf's brain.
I'm not gonna expect much. This is a one wolf show and i haven't touched unity since I shut down my game dev side hustle (more like money/time sink), but I don't think Unity has changed that much since then. Personally, given that the graphics I'm shooting for is jus-above-NES level, I'd rather have gone with a leaner engine like Defold, but I'm much more familiar with getting shit done in C# versus Lua.
Status so far: I got all the boss art completed last night (yes, one night. You will see how shitty my programmer "art" is), gonna be focusing on getting bg artwork, bullets and FX in next. Got a tiny 20x20 sprite of Brok, even got his death animation (lol) ready to go. PyxelEdit is my tool of choice for this.
In other news, I have been shooting at anime cons to get up to speed with my D3400, especially after the fiasco with it at last year's Cfz. Went to Kupocon last weekend and I had a blast. In fast, low light situations, the AF performance is suitably laughable. But it is a <300 dollar camera, so that's a given with a slow zoom. On the flip side, the dynamic range is surprisingly good. I was shooting at iso 3200 for the most part, and the noise is not at all objectionable.
Do I miss my D500? Yes. Can I justify keeping a top of the line DX camera given how much I shoot nowadays? Nope.

ARGH! Confuzzled 2017 photos
Posted 8 years agoFor this year's confuzzled, I bought a new camera as lugging around a D500+lens for three weeks of holidays is really tiring. The D3400 I got is super lightweight, and is more than sufficient for the task of shooting at confuzzled + the holidays after.
Unfortunately, I did not take the time to familiarize myself with the autofocus, and set it to the wrong mode >.> Probably 98% of the fursuit parade shots are out of focus. Only myself to blame here.
Also, the D3400 has a few deficiencies I've noted in the last few weeks of shooting:
- Lack of HSS, so flash outdoors has shutter speed limitations.
- Control for the AF points very easy to be accidentally pressed
Apart from these two minor wiggles, I though the camera is bloody amazing. At about one-sixth of the price of my D500, I have no qualms taking it with me to hostels - I take the memory card with me when I shower, so if the camera gets stolen out of the locker, so be it. The memories I have captured are what's important.
I've been processing the photos from the Cfz/holidays and hopefully will have them up by tomorrow. I've some shots that I've very pleased with, and very surprised by the high iso performance of the camera.
One upgrade that would really improve the technicality of my photos is the lens I use. The 16-85VR has served me for about nine years now, and it's resolving ability is simply not up to the level required by the newer sensors found on the D500/3400. On the flip side, I don't need the resolving capability, since I no longer print. Still, I do lust for the 16-80VR, especially for its wider aperture. But that lens is easily four times the price of the D3400, and given how often I do photography here in Vancouver, I can't justify it.
Oh, I also upgraded my flash to the SB700 - on the day I was packing for the trip, I discovered my SB600 simply would not power up. This was a few hours away from my flight. I was like.... >.> it was working two weeks ago!!!
Thankfully, there is a London Drugs a block away with the SB700 and it was mine. The SB700 is a solid upgrade for sure, the UI is much easier to use. The SB600 has been with me since around 2007 or 2008, so it's had a really good run.
Looking forward for next year's CFz!!!

Blargh need a new raw converter
Posted 9 years agoJust put a whole load of photos online, and as you can see, I can't get Aftershot Pro to do noise reduction on the D500 raws >.>
Turning on the noise reduction either does nothing, or just hangs the export.
Kinda annoyed.
The camera's great, the autofocus is definitely a big step up, it was easily locking on with my 16-85 even around EV1 or 2. Pretty impressed.
The AF point's layout though, I definitely prefer those on the D300. I have to constantly recompose the shot, messing up the dof.
One other thing I've noticed is the dynamic range. I've been shooting at iso 8000 and up for these shots, and they definitely have a lot more range than the D300.
We'll see how it goes.

Camera died.
Posted 9 years agotldr; camera died, getting new one.
My D300 cannot be repaired. It's got the same issues my D200 had when the lens mount wore out >.> Unfortunately for my D300, Nikon says that it no longer has spare parts for it.
On the flip side, they offered to exchange the D300 for a new, warrantied D500 at a pretty good discount, and after figuring out the amortization of my various cameras - my D300 costs me just under 22 CAD a month for the 7 years I've had it - and decided that sure, I can justify that.
Really looking forward to using the new focusing system as well as a new sensor with awesome dynamic range! This should really help with indoor shots.
There are two things I don't like about the D500 though
- No onboard flash. This means the camera can no longer be the CLS master for off-shoe flash photography >.>
- 20 megapixels?! Please. I'd rather have half of them, with larger light-catching pixels. The largest I've printed is A3, and that came out perfectly fine on 10 megapixels.
Storage - The D500 has dual card slots, which is interesting - QXD and SD. This does mean that my entire travel storage system is now mostly useless as my portable HDD only takes CF/SD. I'm definitely not going to be using SD, as the performance of QXD is simply amazing.
Can't wait! It arrives in 3 weeks, or so the Nikon techs say :)
Still writing, and working away on hobbies. Gotta keep moving forward!

Back from Europe!
Posted 9 years agoJust had a great 3 weeks off, during which I took time holidaying around Europe, and attending CF along the way :)
Dublin - generally awesome, hopefully will be back next year to tour the Devil's Causeway. My main reason to get there was to visit Broome Bridge, to visit the birth place of quaternions!
Cardiff - the castle and museum are bloody good, and I had a day out to the docks that were really good.
Birmingham - CFz of course! I did take a day to visit Birmingham. I visited several cool museums, like a Pen Museum where you could make fountain pen nibs, Coffin Works, where they made parts for coffins and a few other places.
Le Noirmont - Visited to do a watchmaking course with Initium, it was bloody expensive, but well worth it! Learnt how to disassemble, then re-assemble an ETA Unitas 6497 movement, then later assemble a watch with it!
Cologne & Bonn - first time spending time in Germany properly. Bonn had some interesting places, visited Beethoven's house, the calculator museum (very cool) and one of the museums for a Bauhaus exhibit.
Rotterdam - bloody amazing modern architecture all over the place. Wish I had more time, wanted to do a cruise with the pancake boat and visit the windmills, but oh well. I also took a side visit to Breda to visit their Museum of Graphic Design. They'd a great exhibit on artist's impressions on Van Gough's work.
Apart from dealing with the jet lag, I've just got news (today!) that I can apply for my Canadian PR, so I'm fumbling about to get it all sorted. I've got a few photos from CF that I'll be going through once the PR application is dealt with.

Woooot Cfz 2016!
Posted 9 years agoCan't wait for it! Been working overtime for over half a year, my brain is bloody knackered >.>
I'll be visiting Dublin and Cardiff before CFz, then heading over to Bern, Cologne then London before flying back to Vancouver. Woo!

Updates, furry writers?
Posted 10 years agotldr; moved to vancouver, bc, canada. Starting a fiction/fantasy writing course next week. Any furry writers to suggest?
---
I've moved to Canada (again!) for about half a year now, this time in Vancouver, BC. Work has kept me very busy - been pulling 60hr weeks for the last few months, and for the last stretch of the project gonna hit the 70hr barrier.
But I'll be done in a few weeks, hopefully it'll be quiet enough that I can visit Vancoufur! I've got my ticket, and arranged for time off, but as a workaholic, if I can't get my part done I'll probably just attend the weekends, and not thursday/friday.
Lately, I haven't been posting any music as I just can't seem to compose anything good. I thought, hey, perhaps I should try composing NOT using scores, and checked out composing apps, but I just can't get anything I feel is good. I was rather stressed out by this actually, it feels like all the effort and time I've spent has gone for naught. Oh well.
Which brings me to the other half of my subject. I randomly glossed through some Udemy courses on fiction writing, and I thought... that sounded interesting! Didn't buy the udemy course, but bought several books for my kindle. Stephen King's On Writing is particularly good and interesting, an interesting read about how one a bestselling author thinks, as well as his journey through his accident. I've also bought and read several "how to write a novel" type books.
It's very illuminating, and I should have done this earlier. It's given me a new way of reading books, and I'm re-reading some old books, and it's given me insight on why I like - or don't like - certain books.
It was around here I though that I'd like to attend a short novel writing course, and then came upon Gotham Writers, a writing institution in NYC that offers in-house and online courses. I mostly read scifi, and took up their scifi and fantasy writing course, starting next week. _should_ be interesting! I've also been writing short 2-300 word passages everyday to get the writing juices flowing. We'll see how things go!
Bhavfox has given me some suggestions for furry writers to follow. Offhand, I think most of my furry "books" are Kyell Gold's, I have an assortment of stuff from various authors show up but would love to hear if there are authors that deal with scifi or fantasy, less purely smut ;)
Oh. I'll be at Confuzzled this year, hopefully will be able to get some volunteering in. Still not yet planned exactly how I'm going to get there - will be visiting Dublin and Cardiff before heading up to Birmingham. Will probably finish this UK trip via way of london. Probably flying back via dublin again as it's cheaper? Well I'll see...

I've read Sunset of Furmankind a long while back, and finished re-reading it a few hours ago. I thought I'd find out if there was a continuation to the story, and there is a follow up called "Second Chance" available for download at the URL above.
Not a TF fan myself, but the first book deals with the medical procedures and stages of transformation as volunteers for the colonization of earth-like planets are changed from human beings to anthros of various sorts, culminating with the journey to a new world.
Can't wait to read the 2nd book :) TRB also has other genres of stories up on his site, I'm quite surprised the ebooks are free as I bought most of mine off amazon!

Moved down under!
Posted 11 years agoArrived in Adelaide, South Australia last Sunday, and the very next day was already at work! Usually I try to arrange for at least a week or two before the job starts to check out the city (worked in adl twice before so I generally know the city) and more importantly, find a place to stay.
Not having much luck with the later on gumtree et al, but there were some university accommodations that were fine with letting this grey muzzle rent a flat smack dab in the cbd. Costly (290pw! I was paying 720cad/month in Montreal), but I save time getting to work, which is mucho important to me.
Once I get settled in - I move to the new place next weekend - will have to get some speakers for music, and if the budget will swing it, a long lens so I can shoot the dingos and roos in Cleland :3 Will also try my best for Confurgence 2015, should be doable, but the hotel prices are quite expensive, especially when I'm such a professional wallflower. Will see if the con needs helpers, did that at CF, and it was great meeting new fuzzies.
Not sure if I can make CF 2015, but will try my damn hardest. Graaah.

Blargh, no proper lcd monitor.
Posted 11 years agoSo.... during the move from Montreal I sold most of my toys, including my beloved ips monitor of almost 5 years. Photos are being graded on a somewhat crap tn screen so....
XD
Also: _someone_ forgot to pay the server bill for fursuitphotography.com - so photoarchives will take a few days to deliver...

CFz 2014 over, feeling crushed, con thoughts
Posted 11 years agoBeing the nomad I am, this is the first time I really feel the want to stay somewhere, and I do miss the UK. I have no idea when I can come back, heck I'm looking for work around the EU so I can attend cons and visit the UK with less of a hassle.
I do miss my fuzzy friends and food here (mmmmm byrons) but that's the way my work takes me...
Anyways, some thoughts on Confuzzled 2014:
- Getting to the convention was very straightforward, train up to Birmingham International from London Euston, and there was a mostly sheltered path to the Hilton Metropole that takes perhaps 10 minutes. Buying advanced return tickets (thanks Bhav!) cost only £12.
- Room was much smaller than CFz 2012; small rooms are fine really, but the lack of a bathtub is like :(:(:( Its not really a good idea to bring a kindle to the poolside jacuzzi...
- On the flip side, the pool is really good, with proper lanes, as well as a steam *and* sauna rooms. Not that I used them. This wolf canna breathe in that kinda of humidity and heat!
- Food at the main bar area was excellent, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. There was also the budget option available, had that one or twice but really, I thought it was about the same as food you get in touristy places. Breakfast was great on the first day, but I felt brekkie got worst as the days went by lol. The last day hash browns I had were definitely very sad.
- I actually joined a room party for almost half an hour before I found a real excuse to run away - to book this hotel I'm staying it right now as I type this.
- Couldn't really get into the mood to do much general photography sadly, this is in part still not feeling the mood from the last half year+ of working, as well as just bored of shooting fursuiters inside a hotel. That said, there were a few suiters who got me to tag along on their jaunts, and I got some really nice shots I will post in a week or two.
- Helped out as a volunteer for a few hours over the days, one of the days we were helping guide the people into the pawpet show, another day we helped tear down the art show, load up vans, move some stuff. Will definitely volunteer next time I'm at a con, it is much more exciting than cringing when surrounded by strangers and retreating into the hotel room to watch sci-fi.
- Having been away for over a year, it's quite striking to see how the furs have grown, matured and changed.
- Music Jam session was a good idea, but I think not really well thought out. There were probably a dozen guitars - acoustic, bass, electric. Me with a set of irish whistles and native american flute, a dude with a harmonica as well as another with a synth. Sadly, it felt really unorganized, with all the guitars playing the same chords, I couldn't really join in as my instruments are diatonic. Synth guy left halfway through, and I left when I got called away to shoot some fuzzies. If you ever visited a music shop with people testing guitars, that's what it was at times.
- Oh! Submitted a piece for the art show, 100% to charity. Didn't go into the main auction, but I think it sold for £27 (I don't know the final price) so yay! It was done over a week and printed on C3 metallic paper. Yeah, it wasn't cheap. Next year, I look forward to submitting another piece, but I think I will know how to better prepare.
- Several themed consoles and game machines around the hotel, custom build by the crew.
- There is actually a grand piano in the place, which I got permission to play and made a fool of myself :P Snugglebunny was amazing, playing the piano in fursuit, as well as other furry pianists.
- JM Horse had a rather interesting panel on furry data, but there was an aspect mentioned on Zoophilia and furries that was quite surprising (1 in 6 furs?!). In addition, JM brought up a point that I do not agree, and probably will email him later. He mentions, that gays were ostracized (my words - forgot the exact line he used) many decades ago, but are now more largely accepted. JM indicates that Zoophilia may also be more accepted down the line.
I don't agree with the comparison. The difference for me is that to be gay, this is a consensual thing between two people who can communicate. I'm not sure how consent works between a human and an animal that has no way of saying yes, or no. If there is no consent, what is it then?
- Over a thousand furs at a UK convention! It was massive! I could not believe the number of fursuits on the parade, had to be 6-700 at least!? And here I am, reluctant to even wear my tail (it's my precious!)
- Worked up the courage to ask someone out for a drink. He said no, but yanno, I actually did it! I met him at CFz 2 years ago, never had the balls, but for some reason, I felt that I only lived once, and I had to give it a go. I really should ask more people out :P Then I keep reminding myself, my work brings me all over... how would that work. One day I'll figure it out... one day.
- The theme for CFz 2015 is also announced, it is to be Alice In Wonderland themed. I'm sure I'll come up with some "awesome" ideas and procrastinate, but we'll see. I'll defo work on a small piece for the charity auction as well.
- I have got to get another tail that is smaller sized for convention use; the tail I have right now is just too nice and I don't want to wear it out. Or rather, I'd rather have it worn out being used as a pillow and not have furry germs on it. Well, it'll only have my furry germs :P
- Speaking of furry germs, could you imagine one of those plush microbe toys with a kigu and tail?
- Con T-shirt - orange is _ok_ but the text "not" is clearly not visible. Why why why? I actually much preferred the shorts worn by the security crew, the rainbow coloured furry silhouettes looked great!

First world problems: Overtime, overtime, overtime
Posted 11 years agoMany thanks to the people who have +watched and favourited my older stuff! I have had one of the worst years so far, been doing crazy overtime and long story I won't get into here, no overtime pay :( Been too tired to do more, basically just get home, bit of reading on the kindle or some brainless game on the tablet and bed. Rinse, repeat. Heck, I've had to cancel my music lessons! Says enough.
Examples: Have had only 1 Saturday off this year.
About 40hrs at work in the last 3 days. I buggered off today after my contracted hours were done - too damned tired. But I'll be out of my contract in 4 more weeks, and I have no idea what's next.
Hope to catch the UK fuzzies at Confuzzled.... can't wait 0/

69 Meme
Posted 12 years agoBecause I need to relax a bit :P
Stolen from
AkiZenko
1: Could you go the rest of your life without smoking a cigarette?
Easy.
2: Are you single/taken/heartbroken/confused?
Single.
3: What if I told you that you were pretty?
*Wolf Glare* or nonplussed.
4: Ever been told “it’s not you, it’s me”?
Nein.
5: Are you interested in anyone right now?
No.
6: What are you looking forward to in the next week?
Working on music and other personal projects

No, because it can get lonely. Yes, because I enjoy my free time. Hence, opportunity cost, yadayada.
8: Did you go out or stay in last night?
Stayed in. I finished a new composition :P And read books, played some games.
9: How late did you stay up last night?
about 2am.
10: Can you recall the last time you realized you liked someone a lot?
Oh yes, that was sooo much drama. I had a minor falling out with a good buddy
bhavfox but I think he's forgiven me :)
11: Last three things you had to drink?
Tea, Tea and Tea.
12: Have you ever pretended to like someone?

13: Have you ever told somebody you loved them and not actually meant it?
No.

Miss friends and furs from home and uk.

I need to google this word. Oh my. How unsanitary :P

I think so. My memory is so bad, I can't remember what I ate for lunch.

Music teacher.
27: Are you listening to music right now?
OC Remix: Balance and Ruin | Final Fantasy VI Prologue theme.

29: What is the last thing you said out loud?
Hard to say, I mumble to myself the whole day.
30: How is your heart lately?
Must exercise more, unlike London, where the swimming pool was a 3-4 minute walk away, the pools here are either outdoors and not open when I want to visit them or expensive, so my heart has been having an easy time.
31: Do you wear the hood on your hoodie?
When it's cold or raining, yes!
32: Are you wearing socks?
Not at the time of this post.

People who take care of each other when sick.
And many other beautiful stories.
So, I would say, love truly is in the eye of the beholder.

Six months ago, I was working and living in London. Montreal is very different. I miss the London Furmeets. I miss my uk furiends. I miss the burger culture. So, I would say, love truly is in the eye of the beholder.
52: Do you miss the way things were six months ago?
Six months ago, I was working and living in London. Montreal is very different. I miss the London Furmeets. I miss my uk furiends. I miss the burger culture. I miss the sax shop, and how I can't tease colleagues when I say, "I'm going to the sax shop, want to come along?" because there aren't sax-only shops here.
53: Ever been on a golf cart?
No.
54: Do you have trust issues?
Yes, because I fucking dislike gossips.
55: Ever stayed up all night on the phone, with who?
No.
56: Do you own something from Hot Topic?
No.
57: Do you use chap stick?
Only for sax.
58: Have you ever slapped someone in the face?
No.
59: Do you have a little sister?
Yes.
60: Have you ever been to New York?
No, one day for sure.
61: Think of the last person who said I love you, do you think they meant it?
I have had people say that to me, and sorry to say, how can you love someone you've hardly spoken to?
62: Have you hugged someone within the last week?
Yes.
63: What were you doing at midnight last night?
Pretty sure I was reading.
64: Have you ever regretted kissing someone?
Not. Applicable.
65: Is there one person in your life that can always make you smile?
Nope.
66: Were your last three kisses from the same person?
I am starting to regret this meme.
67: Have you kissed anyone in the last five days?
Truly regretting.
68: Would you rather sleep with someone else or alone?
I have a wolf plush I sleep with, that counts right? :P
69: Will next Friday be a good one?
Of course! It will be a fun evening of learning and creating.

Happy New Year!
Posted 13 years agoHappy new year fuzzies! Haven't been around a meet or even checking out the stuff on FA much (I appear to have missed some fantastic art and music) as work has been killer, and the last week off I've just been immersing myself in personal projects to de-stress. It's over two months since I've shot a fursuit walk, and I hope I can make the next furmeet (crosses fingers).
Have a good year ahead!
