Gaylaxicon 2012 is coming up!
Posted 13 years agoNow that Gaylaxicon 2012 is just over 6 weeks away, we've released our second progress report. Gaylaxicon 2012 is a convention celebrating gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender science fiction, fantasy, horror and gaming. It changes venues every year and will be returning to Minnesota in October 5-7, 2012.
Here's the low-down:
--Due to stress-related health concerns, our featured artist, Wendy Pini, will not be able to attend Gaylaxicon 2012. We're excited to announce Barbara Schulz as our featured artist this year. She teaches comic book arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and has done work for many major comic labels.
--Major events include a Meet the Pros reception after the opening ceremony, a cabaret on Saturday night featuring professional performers complete with a catwalk of cosplaying/costuming attendees, and movie screenings on Sunday night. There will also be a chocolate symposium in the con suite featuring chocolate from all over the world and we're selling tickets for a catered banquet on Saturday evening.
--Gaming will have over triple the space compared to 2009 with official support from The Source, a local games and comic shop, so you'll know there will be plenty of games to borrow during the event. Gaming will be open 24 hours during the entire convention.
--The art show is accepting registrations with very reasonable hanging fees and commission rates. We accept art that's for sale, not for sale, 3D/sculptures, adult and not adult, and there will be a print shop available. We just ask that all art keeps with the scifi/fantasy/speculative fiction theme of the convention.
--We're making an active effort to welcome furries to Gaylaxicon this year, including esteemed Guest of Honor
Kyell Gold and fellow Guest of Honor Sofawolf Press. Other furry publishers in the dealers room are
furplanet and Rabbit Valley Comic Shop. Fursuit creator
ByCats4Cats will be dealing as well.
--Besides Kyell, Barbara and Sofawolf, the other Guests of Honor are Doctor Who script editor Gary Russell (all the way from the UK!), local author Lyda Morehouse/Tate Hallaway and LGBT comics support network and resource Prism Comics. Attending professionals include Naomi Kritzer, Ginn Hale, Warren Rochelle, Catherine Lundoff, anime voice actor J. Michael Tatum and many others.
--On the programming side of things, local Minnesota fur group
MNFurs will be hosting a number of furry-related panels to reach out to the larger GLBT geek community. Those panels will be mixed in with a wide variety of geek panels appealing to queer fandom and the speculative fiction community at large.
Pre-registration for Gaylaxicon 2012 closes soon so there's no better time to register than right now! You can also buy banquet tickets and t-shirts at the registration link. Another option is a Supporting membership where you pay a discounted rate now to support the con. If you later choose to attend, at the door you only pay the difference from the current pre-registration rate. To book a hotel room, visit here. The volunteer to host a panel, visit here. See you at the con!

San Diego Comic-Con wrap-up
Posted 14 years agoSo, Gaylaxicon 2012 had 3, count 'em THREE! Guests of Honor at the San Diego Comic-Con this year: Kyell Gold, Sofawolf Press and Prism Comics. The Sofawolf guys were kind enough to bring Gaylaxicon flyers along and give half of them to Prism Comics on the exhibitor's floor. So they both had flyers in their booths. Awesome!
By the way, the Comic-Con discount code is still good. Enter 'SDCC2011' for $5 off registration, today (Friday the 29th) only: http://www.gaylaxicon2012.org/index.....amp;Itemid=114
I have to admit, what I was most anticipating was a follow-up to the epic Tycho/Sofawolf meeting last year. Tycho Brahe of Penny Arcade wrote a hilarious news article last year about Sofawolf Press and their story involving "gay, bipedal foxes having sex in a castle", obviously a reference to Kyell Gold's Volle. Give it a read: http://www.penny-arcade.com/2010/7/26/ It's surprisingly furry-positive and Tycho clearly regretted not getting back to Sofawolf's booth to make a purchase.
So fast-forward to this year and SDCC again stuck Sofawolf in with all the web comics: http://twitter.com/#!/cwgabriel/sta.....51559443275779 The first hint of a Tycho/Sofawolf meeting is in this tweet from Tycho: http://twitter.com/#!/TychoBrahe/st.....23087056502784 That set Twitter ablaze with everyone wondering what the heck was going on. Finally, we got another furry-related news post in Penny Arcade Wednesday: http://www.penny-arcade.com/2011/7/27/ And we were even treated to a furry-related comic that day: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/7/27/ I assume it's furry-related. Maybe that guy just really likes Tails (uh huh). If anyone finds a picture of that costume, I'd love to see it. It looks fantastic (and possibly hot).
Anyway, Kyell followed up with a clear description of what actually happened: http://kyellgold.livejournal.com/249885.html It turns out Tycho approached Sofawolf to buy his gay-bipedal-foxes-having-sex-in-a-castle book and Sofawolf threw in Out of Position for free. It made for a great story and perhaps one more admirer of furry literature (only academically, of course).
On the Prism Comics side, they had a huge presence with the hosting of five panels and a ton of great artists and writers signing at their booth, including Gail Simone, Phil Jimenez and 2009 Gaylaxicon GoH Andy Mangels. Here's a link to their last wrap-up of the show: http://prismcomics.org/display.php?id=2016 You can find summaries of individual days on their news page: http://prismcomics.org/news.php

Kyell Gold wins 2 Ursa Major Awards!
Posted 14 years agoCongratulations to
kyell on winning 2 Ursa Major Awards last night! http://www.flayrah.com/3536/2010-ur.....awards-winners Updating the number of awards your Guest of Honor has won is a happy task for our publicity department. :)
Sofawolf Press is already a Guest of Honor and we're working to get FurPlanet as well, so I suspect those two award-winning books and many more will available in the dealers room of our convention. It's very exciting to have such furry publisher representation.
