Spread the Word - The Belfry
Posted 10 years agoWant to do the creator of one of your favourite comics a huge solid? The Belfry is one of the more popular webcomic directories out there.
http://new.belfrycomics.net/?search.....archpat=sprawl
Right now "The Sprawl" is doing respectably over there. In the top 100 furry comics, in the top 50 Sci-Fi comics, and even in the top 30 Horror comics. Still, I'm confident we can do better! We're over a year in, over a hundred(ish) pages posted, and quickly approaching 1000 followers here on FA alone!
If you want to help me out in making this comic as big and as great as I want to make it, you can do so by marching over to The Belfry and letting other people know what you think about the comic so far! Comics with more subscriptions and good reviews there get more visibility with new readers. More readers for me means more supporters! More supporters means more time to make comics. More time to make comics means faster updates and better looking pages.
So like they say on YouTube, "Like, comment and subscribe"! It's not just obnoxious, self-promotion! It really does help the creators whose work you enjoy.

100(ish) Pages of "The Sprawl"!
Posted 10 years agoWow! So, yeah, that's 100 pages posted to FA! 100 pages of cyberpunk metal horror goodness for you to feast your eyes upon! Sort of!
"Sort of"?
Yeah, while I've posted 100 pages to FA, I'm creating "The Sprawl" with a large, 300-some page volume in mind, and that means over time I've been going back, improving little bits, rewriting some lines, and in one case removing an entire scene because I wasn't happy with the art. (The scene is still on FA as an optional link where it was originally in the comic, but it's not in the "official" version posted to the www.drawholic.net website.)
Anyways, it's still a big deal to me to have produced 100 pages on what was originally a failed pitch to a couple of pay sites, and I'm happy so many people are enjoying it. Also, a big shout out to my Patreon supporters who make it possible for me to continue putting so much time into this project each month! Thank you!
So I hope you continue to look forward to new pages of "The Sprawl" each week as much as I look forward to bringing them to you! I've got big plans for the comic and can't wait to share!
Thanks again, everyone!

February Update
Posted 11 years agoHey guys,
I'm going to try and do more regular updates. At least once a month, but we'll see if I can actually pull it off.
Anyways, January was kinda surprisingly rough financially, mostly due to the holidays. I've picked up additional hours at my day job, as well as a second job. This means less time for commissions and "The Sprawl".
Regarding commissions, if I finish my paying work and Sprawl pages for the week and still feel energetic enough for more, I'll do commissions on the weekends. For those who've already contacted me about commissions, I'll contact you before I start work on anything to see if you're still interested.
As for "The Sprawl", I've already reduced my page updates from 2 pages a week back to one page a week. I hope to eventually produce more pages every week again, but it will likely be tied to how much my Patreon support grows. Right now I have about 1300 followers between all my galleries. If all of them were sending me a dollar each month through Patreon, I'd be able to quit one of my paying jobs and put more time towards making comics. So, if you've wanted to support "The Sprawl" but felt you didn't have the money to do so, just remember even a dollar a month helps a lot.
https://www.patreon.com/drawholic
Beyond all that, I'm surviving and by the end of February I should be in a much better place. Let's see if that holds true when it comes time to post the March update!

The Sprawl is Reverting to 1 Page a Week Next Month
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone, I have news. Not great news, but not terrible.
To supplement my meager income I'm taking on a second job. This will cut deep into my time that, until now, I've been using to produce pages of "The Sprawl".
Don't panic and kill your family! The Sprawl will continue, just at one page a week instead of two. Updates will be on Wednesdays.
I'm also in the middle of changing my Patreon supporter perks. Beginning this month, Patreon supporters receive the entire month's pages at the beginning of the month.
If you've contacted me about a commission and I told you I'm interested in working on it, I still am! I just need to figure out how to work commissions into my more limited schedule.
Anyways, that's all the news

Impromptu Streaming Tonight
Posted 11 years agoI'm going to be poking at the latest page of "The Sprawl" in an impromptu stream.
How long? Maybe an hour? Maybe four? Who knows?

I Like Trains
Posted 11 years agoIn about 5 hours I'll be poured into a car, dropped off at a train station, and finally be on my way back home with the holidays behind me. If anyone has emailed me, noted me, or otherwise tried to communicate and not heard back from me, give me until next weekend as I catch up with my backlog. If you have not heard from me by the end of next weekend, send me another message, I may have lost you in the shuffle.
Because of the super early train ride, not sure if I'll get Saturday's Sprawl page posted in the morning. If not I'll post it as soon as I get home. Unless the train has wi-fi so I can post it. We'll see.
As always, the pages will update automatically over at http://www.drawholic.net/ so you can see the new page there after about 6am EST.

2014, Fuck You. Also, Comics.
Posted 11 years agoThat about sums it up. Fuck you, 2014. Go away. Nobody likes you and we're happy you're leaving.
2015 looks like it's going to start rough, mainly because of where 2014 is leaving me, but hopefully things will take a much needed upswing. There is already one shining point of goodness, however.
One year of "The Sprawl".
One full year of posting pages every week. Page one of "The Sprawl" went up on January 1st, 2014. One year of not missing a single week, not even when I switched to two pages a week, nor even when my summer was taken from me by a day job that left me no time or energy to work on comics for two full months.
A full year of late-70's early 80's style pulp sci-fi/horror. LOG:01 started us off by throwing us into the deep end, now the story will start to really take shape with the currently ongoing LOG:02. In my planning stages, LOG:02 has ballooned out so big that I'm going to have to break it into multiple chapters, meaning the story will be longer than the 300 pages I'd originally estimated. There's also a lot of characters yet to be introduced.
I hope you've enjoyed reading it as much as I've enjoyed making it, and look forward to another year as the story continues to grow.

Holiday Heads-Up
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone!
On Sunday morning I leave town to visit family for the holidays. I will not be back until January 3rd.
During this time, I'll be staying with the same friends who put me up over Thanksgiving. I had no internet access for that visit. Now, since this is a much longer visit I'm hoping we'll be able to sort out the internet issue early on, but it's possible there will be no FA updates from me until I get back after New Year's. If that is the case, my site at www.DrawHolic.net will continue to update with new pages of "The Sprawl" twice a week, automatically, so you'll still be able to get your fix.
In any case, I hope everyone out there has a great time over the holidays! Merry Christmas, Happy New Year's and all that fun stuff.

Help Support An Artist, Even if You Have No Money!
Posted 11 years ago Have an artist you like but have no money to support them through donations, commissions, or even Patreon pledges? You can still support them another way.
Share their work.
It's that simple. Whether it's someone who does comics, pin-ups, animation, music, tell other people about it and how much you love it. The more people who know about your favourite artists, the more likely they'll get the financial support allowing them to do even more of what you love.
So get out there and spread the word. Don't wait for your friends to discover it on their own, put it right in front of them and say, "You gotta check this out!"

Post-Thanksgiving Return!
Posted 11 years agoOk, I'm not quite home but I'm at a friend's for the night and have internet!
I've already posted page 78 and will post page 79 in the morning. Page 80 will come at the usual time on Wednesday.
I also plan to resume streaming tomorrow night. I'm trying to decide if I'll do commissions this weekend or use the time to catch up on my "Sprawl" schedule. I've lost a bit of time due to the holiday. Plenty of buffer, but making comics takes a lot of time as it is, I'd rather keep on track when I can.
Speaking of time, I'm taking on extra hours at work. Not a lot, so hopefully it won't interfere with my comic work, but we'll see.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. Now I just need to figure out how to make Christmas work.

Thanksgiving Internet Issues
Posted 11 years agoSo, I am visiting family for Thanksgiving but things are not going as planned.
I'd expected to be at a friends house where i onew id have Internet in the morning but we left the night before to avoid bad weather.
I am currently staying with family but unable to get my laptop on the network, so comic updates will be late. Here, at least. On the official site page updates are automatic. Head over there if you can't wait for FA to get the current page.

All Caught Up On Commissions, New Patreon Perk Unlocked!
Posted 11 years agoOk folks, I'm all caught up on commissions! This means two things!
First, sometime this week I will update my commission information and begin accepting new commissions. I'm not ready to do that quite yet, but expect an announcement very soon.
Second, I am now offering a new perk to my Patreon supporters. Beginning this month I will be posting a high-resolution pin-up of a character from The Sprawl, a new pin-up every month! Check out my gallery for a preview of this month's pin-up! I'll be setting aside one weekend a month to work on these pin-ups.
The full, uncensored version will be available to my Patreon supporters sometime this week. In the meantime, you can see a full list of supporter perks over at my Patreon page:

Commissions Update
Posted 11 years ago Alright everyone, I've finished another commission left over from before the summer. I have one pre-summer commission left and I'm going to devote next weekend to that. It shouldn't actually take me all weekend, it's a fairly small commission, Once that final commission is out of the way I will be posting updated commission information.
Everything is changing. My prices, what I'm offering, and even how you pay me. So don't even bother with the existing commission information for now.

One year closer to death's cold, inevitable embrace! :D
Posted 11 years agoSo, today (technically yesterday as I write this at nearly 1am) was my birthday.
Seems as good an excuse as any for a "State of the Artist" update to all my friends, followers and comic readers.
2014 can suck all kinds of dick. It has not been a good year for me and I will not pretend it was anything less than a horrendous ordeal which I continue to lose sleep over. I've had two apartment floods, a hospital stay I am currently being billed a couple thousand dollars for, and I've had a lot of trouble getting anything resembling decent employment. My current day job has screwed me over on hours, has been telling me to work extra time, unpaid, and will be screwing me for hours even more in December. They are not going to give me any work for half the month. Why would people need money in December? Forget Christmas, I had to tell my Landlord today that it is very likely I will be very late on rent for the next few months.
I am officially requesting a full refund. I am most emphatically an unsatisfied customer and I wish no more dealings with this 2014 business.
However, all is not completely awful.
I hope to finish the last of my pre-summer commissions this weekend. One of them is just about ready for colouring now. Once these commissions have been completed I will be completely rewriting my commission information. Don't bother reading anything I have now, everything will change. From prices, how I get paid, to what it is I'll be offering. This overhaul should be a good thing. Prices will be more aligned with the time it takes me to complete a piece and I'll be getting rid of the commission options I dread and replacing them with popular requests such as con badges, comic pages, YCH auctions, and art stream blocks.
Also, I want to thank the handful of Patreon supporters who've been helping me out the past couple of months. I plan to do a lot more for you guys. I've already switched from weekly to monthly pledges and will be giving my tier rewards and pledge goals another overhaul this weekend. I want being a supporter to have perks. You deserve it! I'm still hammering out the details but look forward to something this weekend!
Speaking of "The Sprawl", my work on the comic continues. I've completed nearly 90 full-colour pages since this time last year and almost completely rebuilt my page buffer to where it was before the summer. That means I already have nearly four months of guaranteed updates ahead at two pages a week. I'd still like to increase my page updates to three a week but I need more support to make that happen. As it is now I may have to take a second job which will decrease the number of pages I can produce each week.
If you've been enjoying the comic and would like to support it but feel money is tight, even a dollar a month helps. I've got 672 followers just on FA alone, if all of you supported me with a dollar a month there'd be no pressure for me to get another job and, in fact, I'd be able to devote enough time to consider posting 3 pages a week. (Although that might be stretching it. ) Between all my galleries and my readers through the various image boards, I've got at least 3000 readers out there. If I were getting a dollar a month from all of them I'd be able to quit my day job and do this full-time, which would mean at least 4 pages a week and con appearances.
http://www.patreon.com/drawholic
Anyways, enough of my pan-handling. I've got cake to eat and sleep to enjoy. I'm stoked about what's coming to "The Sprawl" and hope you all continue to enjoy reading it. This chapter's expository prologue is almost over and I'm insanely happy with the pages I've been producing. This chapter is going to blow the first out of the water.
Look forward to it!

Streaming Is Back On!
Posted 11 years agoOk, so late last week I was finally able to get Picarto working.
You can follow my streams over at https://www.picarto.tv/live/channel.....atch=DrawHolic and I will continue to post stream announcements here on FA.

Streaming On-Hold Due to Technical Difficulties
Posted 11 years agoSo, my laptop is too old to run the software Picarto uses for streaming and Livestream has shut down their old streaming options to push their new service which does me no good. Until another option presents itself, I'll be unable to do drawing streams.
Out for the weekend!
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone, I will be out of town for the weekend.
I believe I will have net access so Saturday's comic page should go up as scheduled, but on the off chance it does not, http://drawholic.net updates automagically every Wednesday and Saturday.
In addition Patreon supporters pledging 50 cents or more a week have already gotten access to Saturday's page. If you're enjoying the comic and would like access to early pages, concept art, sneak peeks at upcoming page art, and more, consider supporting me through Patreon at the link below!
http://www.patreon.com/drawholic
For as little as 25 cents a week you can help support a starving artist, who struggles to make ends meet even as he brings you quality comics twice a week, every week!
Right now I only have a handful of supporters, but if half my followers between here and Weasyl pledged 50 cents a week, I'd be able to make up the difference working only part time and boost comic production up to 3 pages a week. If all my art gallery followers donated that much, I could quit my day job entirely and do this full time, bringing you five pages a week, every week.
50 cents a week. That adds up to about the price of a cup of coffee every month.

Personal Update
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone, bit of an update on my situation. I'm still in frightfully bad shape financially, I was expecting to be making twice the money I am but it's uncertain whether that will happen at all. I should know by the end of October just how screwed I am regarding my work situation.
In the meantime I've begun stepping up my job hunt for employment that will hopefully not throw me to the wolves as my current situation has. Fingers crossed.
Regarding commissions, I still intend to knock out my two remaining commissions and begin accepting more. This past weekend was a wash due to a combination of coming down with a nasty cold and having some work obligations foisted on me for the weekend. However, this coming weekend still looks like clear sailing and I intend to spend Saturday and Sunday at home, locked in my room, chained to my laptop, working on commissions.
Also, we're now less than 10 pages away from the end of the first chapter of "The Sprawl". The second chapter is underway so there's no worries regarding delays. At least not right now. I intend to make getting 2 pages a week my priority, after which all time will be spent on commissions. This will keep me on track to deliver two pages a week while still preserving what's left of my page buffer for emergencies.
A big thank you to my Patreon patrons!
For those of you wondering what Patreon is all about, it's basically crowd sourcing for artists via microtransactions. If you enjoy reading the Sprawl twice a week, you can opt to support me by pledging a small amount of money every week. It can be a dollar, it can be 50 cents, whatever. Every week I post comic pages gets added up and charged at the end of the month. You can put a cap on the amount you're willing to pledge, and you can change your pledge amount at any time.
50 cents a week may not sound like much, but if all of my FA followers pledged only 50 cents a week it would add up to enough each month to cover my rent and groceries. It wouldn't be enough for me to quit my day job, but I'd be in very good shape and it would free me up enough to do 3 page updates a week.
If all my FA followers pledged $1 a week, I'd be able to quit my day job and draw comics full time, meaning 5 page updates every week. And I have enough ideas in my head to keep The Sprawl going for years even at that pace.
So if you're enjoying the comic, please consider supporting me. Even if it's only 25 cents a week. Whatever you can spare. There's enough people reading that even these small amounts make a huge difference if enough people are willing to support. You can join my Patreon at the link below.

Help?
Posted 11 years agoOk, here's the situation.
Rent is due, bills will be due soon, and I was recently slammed with a hefty medical bill I simply cannot afford. Meanwhile, my summer job didn't pay nearly enough despite the hours I put in and I'm currently transitioning back to my Fall-to-Spring job which will mean a hiccup in my income. I was expecting to have extra hours at my fall-to-spring job right away, but that's on hold now and it's looking less certain that I'll get those extra hours at all.
All of which leaves me in a terrifyingly tight spot and I am losing sleep over it.
A few people have asked me when I'll be accepting commissions again, good news is I'm going to be accepting commissions again this weekend. I have two pending commissions which I'm also going to be trying to finish up this weekend. One of them is a small commission, the other fairly big, so I'll likely get the small one done this weekend no problem, the larger one may take until next weekend. Once those are out of the way I'll start on any new commissions I pick up. Commission info link below:
http://www.furaffinity.net/commissions/getta/
I also accept donations via PayPal using the email raddspencer[at]hotmail.com and I have a Patreon for my ongoing comic "The Sprawl". Here's the link for that:

I really hate to lay it all on the line like that, but this year has not been good to me and I'm running out of options.

Support The Sprawl!
Posted 11 years agoThis morning www.drawholic.net launched, the official website of "The Sprawl" along with a Patreon campaign so you can help support my graphic novel making inclinations!
Why Patreon?
I enjoy making comics but I've had some serious setbacks this year (two apartment floods, one hospital visit and that's just the tip of the iceberg of pain that's been 2014 so far!), and if things don't improve it will eventually disrupt the regular comic updates I've maintained so far. If I'm forced to take on another job like the one I have been working over the summer, I may have to put the comic on hold altogether for months at a time.
Patreon allows you, my readers, to donate regularly in small amounts. 50 cents a week. A dollar a month. Pocket change that's billed once a month via Patreon.
Between FA, Weasyl and InkBunny, "The Sprawl" now has somewhere around 900 readers. If even half of you pledged 50 cents a week through Patreon it would put me on pretty solid footing to continue posting two pages a week.
With even more support I may be able to focus even more on the comic and increase the number of pages posted each week. Each page of "The Sprawl" only takes me about 8 hours from start to finish. If I were doing this full time I'd easily be able to post 4-5 pages a week, every week. And I have enough stories in my head to keep the Sprawl going at that pace for several years.
To be clear, the comic will remain free and I will continue to post the unrated version, sex scenes and all, here on FA, Weasyl and my other art sites. Patreon is just there to help me eke out a living as I work on all this. If you're enjoying The Sprawl and can spare to throw a few quarters at me each month for the entertainment, it would be much appreciated!

marquisdecarabas50 pages! 600 Followers! Nice, round numbers!
Posted 11 years agoNeat!
So today I got my 600th follower and posted the 50th page of "The Sprawl"!
We've got 16 more pages to go for the first chapter and in the next couple of weeks I return to production on the second chapter! So I should be able to maintain the two pages a week pace for updates.
I hope everyone continues to enjoy the comic and I should have some more news in the coming weeks!

Well, Crap
Posted 11 years agoSo just when things are looking up, 2014 pulls the rug out from under me again.
I just got slapped with some financial trouble, relating to some minor medical issues earlier in the year, that is already causing me to lose sleep. So I'm updating the comic tonight in case I wake up late and have to scramble off to work without giving you your Wednesday comic goodness.
I'm still kinda digesting this.

FA Downtime Reminder 8/01/2014
Posted 11 years agoHello my faithful watchers and readers! Just a reminder that FA announced some maintenance downtime will occur this weekend. They have not, however, said exactly when the downtime will take place and as page 44 of "The Sprawl" is due to hit tomorrow morning, I want to let you all know there's some alternative sites you can check out to see the page should FA not be allowing uploads during that time.
At this time I maintain two other galleries and I tend to update all three when a new page goes live.
Weasyl
Inkbunny
In addition, I intend to set up an official website for "The Sprawl", but that may be a ways away yet while life continues to keep me pinned against the ropes for the summer. So in the meantime, watch me on Weasyl and inkbunny to get updates when FA is down!

The Situation
Posted 11 years agoJust a random update on my situation because I haven't been streaming in a while and I still owe a couple outstanding commissions.
My regular job ended in June and I've since started a summer job until I go back to my regular work in the fall. The summer job is, so far, brutal. I just got home and I'm basically going to write this journal entry, prepare everything I'll need for work tomorrow, then go straight to bed. When I wake up tomorrow I want to update the comic if I can (if not it will definitely be updated in the evening) go to work, and when I finally get home tomorrow I'll do the same thing. Prepare for the next day's work and head straight to bed.
I expect next week to be about the same but I'm hoping that after that everything will fall into a rhythm and it will be somewhat easier for the 5 weeks after that.
The silver lining is that I have 3 day weekends. I imagine at least part of that will be spent recovering from the work week, but I do plan to slam out my remaining commissions, with added interest to make them worth the wait because you guys have been patient with me. This will take priority over any more work on my comic, "The Sprawl". The current chapter was finished a while ago, so page updates will continue every Saturday and Wednesday until the current chapter is over. There may be some delay between the end of this chapter and the start of the next, but that would still be a few months away.
That said, I hope everyone is enjoying "The Sprawl" because there's a lot more to come. The current story is the first part of a three part story. That's right, when this chapter ends with page 66, we'll only just be getting started. Look forward to it!
Anyways, that is my situation. I hope everyone who went to AC this past weekend had a blast and I hope everyone is enjoying the summer!

500 Watchers!
Posted 11 years agoI feel like I should be posting a picture along with this, but my day job having me run around as they're wrapping up for the summer has left me totally wiped so you'll have to settle for this journal entry for now. That said, big thanks to everyone who is watching, I hope you're enjoying "The Sprawl". This coming Wednesday is the half-way point for this story, so there's plenty left to see. I've got the next story for "The Sprawl" mostly figured out. The structure of it, at least. Like this story there will be some sex and a lot of mystery.
Look forward to it!
Look forward to it!
