Art Stream Issues
Posted 11 years agoHey guys.
I said I was going to be streaming last night or today and that obviously hasn't happened. My net connection keeps going out. I've no idea why. I'm actually posting this from a neighbor's.
If the net problems get resolved tonight I'll do a stream then, if not I'll be calling up my ISP.

Update on Art Streams
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone, as some of you might have noticed I've stopped pretty much entirely with the art streams while I work on the comic. That's because I'm at the part of the story where every page is a major spoiler, and I hate spoilers. So, you'll just have to be patient and read the finishes pages as they're posted!
That said, in my last journal update I mentioned I'd be working on commissions sometime this week. Commissions are spoiler-free! So I'll be streaming as I work on that. Expect a commission stream either tomorrow (Friday) evening or sometime on Saturday.
Also, I think (not 100% sure yet) that there will be a week or two between the end of my current day job and the start of my summer day job. If that turns out to be the case, I plan to polish off the last of my outstanding commissions then.

Saturday Bonus Page Immanent
Posted 11 years agoHere's how it will work. Wednesday updates are guaranteed. I will update "The Sprawl" every Wednesday.
Saturdays will be a special bonus update contingent on whether or not I finish 3 or more pages that week. Lately I've been finishing 4-8 pages a week, so it's pretty very likely I'll be posting Saturday pages most weeks.
I've been pondering lately. Prevailing wisdom is that a comic with porn in it will put off anyone reading for the story and that a decent story will put off anyone reading for the porn. I've already seen more than a couple comments about my comic, from both perspectives, which seem to affirm that long held wisdom. In the end, I don't believe this will affect where I go with "The Sprawl", I wanted to make a comic with some fun stories and sexy bits, so I'm going to keep doing that. However I do suspect I'm putting myself firmly into a very small niche in doing so.
Regarding this weekend's planned commission working time, I still intend to focus on commissions when I work on art this weekend, however my day job employer pulled an "Office Space" this week and I've been told to work Saturday. So after I post the next page of "The Sprawl" I'm heading off to work and have no idea if I'll get home in time to do any art Saturday. I will, however, work on commissions as planned Sunday.

More comic pages for your eyeballs.
Posted 11 years agoSo, after some consideration, I've decided that the Sprawl will have reliable, regular updates every Wednesday. In addition, I will begin posting regular updates on Saturdays for as long as I can maintain that pace. May main concern is that my current job will be on a 2-3 month hiatus beginning in about a month, which means I'm scrambling to find income for that period and I'm not sure how that will affect my productivity.
I'm also considering setting up a Patreon or some other donation system, with goals such as "at "X" amount, I'll post an additional page the following week". The way I see it, if everybody currently following my FA page were donating a dollar a week I'd be able to work on The Sprawl full time, posting a new page every weekday, Monday-Friday. That would be about a print issue's worth of comic a month. We'll see, seems most adult comics keep the sex going at rapid fire pace where with the Sprawl I'm aiming for a lot more story-happenings with a lot of casual nudity and the occasional bout between the sheets. It remains to be seen how well that goes over.
Speaking of income, I've got a few people waiting on commissions. This weekend I'll likely take a break from comic pages to work on those, once those are all out of the way I'll likely begin accepting commissions again. Also, the next few pages I've got queued up to work on will contain fairly big spoilers so I'm deciding whether or not to stream while I work on them. I may stream but post big "SPOILER" warnings in the stream notices.
Anyways, enjoy today's page and look forward to another this coming Saturday!

Free Comic Book Day - Saturday, May 3rd!
Posted 11 years agoRemember kids, tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day. One of the best holidays of the year! All the good little boys and girls can go to their local comic shop and pick up plenty of free books! Even better, the rest of us can get free comics, too.
To celebrate, I'll be posting the next page of "The Sprawl" tomorrow, as well as the regular update next Wednesday!

Posted 11 years agoJust some random thoughts on making comics.
The Sprawl is actually my fifth or sixth comic. My third full colour, published in some form comic. It started out as an idea way back in art school which I pitched to a few friends, a single open world anthology people could fill with stories. I resurrected the idea this past fall and began putting together a first chapter/prologue, which is what you're seeing now.
I originally start by throwing together a rough outline. I'll list all the characters I have in mind and write a brief sentence or two regarding their role in the story. Then I think about a beginning and an end, around which I build out a more detailed outline. It's just like writing a report in highschool, using the beginning, end and character ideas as a basis, I flesh out a story arc. The outline for this first chapter is only a couple of pages long and from there I begin thumbnailing out my pages.
When doing page thumbnails, I'll generally go until I run out of steam, sketching out very rough page concepts, scribbling in placeholder dialogue, turning the outline into something visual I can work from.
Once I run out of steam on page thumbnails (I'll spend anywhere from an hour to a day doing thumbnails), I'll take what I have and begin working on final page art.
Yeah, comic progress goes pretty fast. Using a thumbnail as a basis I'll start drawing out the page art. I'll generally devote about 8 hours to a page for this stage. Often, I've spent an entire drawing stream working on one page from start to finish. The first four-five hours or so is the line art. I've got a couple of Photoshop filters which make it quick and easy to lay out the flat colours once the line art is done and whatever time I have left is where I hammer through the colours, shading, effects and lettering. After about 8 hours, I've got one more comic page finished and I generally call it a day.
Speeding through the comic pages like this means the art isn't nearly as good as my pin-up illustrations, but it keeps the comic moving. On a good week I can crank our 3-4 pages. This gives me a buffer for those weeks where life makes sure I don't get anything done. This also means I have time to work on commissions and other projects so I don't get bored or burnt out on the comic.
And there you have it, a quick run down on how I produce "The Sprawl" each week. Keep an eye on my account for stream announcements if you ever want to drop in and watch me work!

And then I was in a hospital
Posted 11 years ago Missed this weekend's art stream. I was in the hospital with a really nasty case of bronchitis the doctor was worried might be pneumonia. Was completely out of sorts for a couple of days, freezing cold despite the warm weather. Feeling a bit better now, but still bedridden and on three different medications. Should be fine again in a few days.
Commissions and Art Streams
Posted 11 years agoOk, I've started streaming again, trying to keep up with the comic and also get my current overdue batch of commissions underway now that I'm finally settling into the routine of my new job. Due to the commissions already in queue, I've decided to stop accepting new commissions for the time being. I'll open up commission slots again once the current batch is finished, and probably work on some variant of the slot system after that.
Unfortunately, 2014 isn't letting up and has landed a couple more kidney punches on me. Still, nothing I can do but keep marching on, so keep an eye out for more stream announcements. I'll definitely stream over the weekend, and I'm going to try and get an evening stream in after work during the week.

Slow Going
Posted 11 years agoHey all, just another update.
Been slow going since I started my job, doesn't help that my boss was sick and I caught whatever she had so that knocked me out for a week or so of productivity. I'm hoping to spend most of this coming weekend streaming. I've still got four commissions I need to finish, a couple other projects, plus I've been cutting into my buffer of Sprawl pages, so I'll have to start knocking those out again or risk falling behind.

Another Update! Streaming resumes this weekend!
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone! Another update.
I started a new job two weeks ago, it doesn't pay much but I was offered extra hours last week so I took them, which is why I wasn't around a whole lot and spent my weekend in a waking coma.
This week my hours are settling into something more regular and I'm figuring out all the usual new-job issues.
Right now it is my plan to resume streaming commission and comic work this coming weekend. My new job has me working days so I can't do late night drawing sessions anymore. I'm planning on streaming around noon to 10 on Saturday then maybe a few hours on Sunday.

General Update
Posted 11 years agoHey everyone, just posting to let everyone know I'm not dead. Just been a rough week, so haven't done my planned art streams or gotten much done with commissions.
Don't worry, I'll be back to work getting the backlog cleared up soon.

The Sprawl Continues
Posted 12 years agoAnother Wednesday, another page of "The Sprawl". Pacing a comic like one you'd pull off your book shelf and read is great once you're a hundred pages in, but it does make for a slow start, but we're finally getting into the story, introducing characters, and all that fun stuff people expect from comics. Page five also marks the first page where I can start justifying calling it an adult comic.
Believe me, this escalates quickly over the next few pages.
Speaking of, I've been averaging about 2-3 pages a week since I started posting the comic, so by now I'm sitting on a nice, healthy buffer to ensure I won't be missing any deadlines any time soon.
So look forward to many more pages and I hope you enjoy the story I'm cooking up here at least as much as you enjoy the rampant debauchery and shameless fan service which will undoubtedly make up at least half of each chapter.

Gotta Draw Fast!
Posted 12 years agoFinished off page 16 of "The Sprawl" today, putting me eleven pages (or, almost 3 months) ahead of this coming Wednesday's update. I've picked up a few additional tricks recently which have sped me up even more than I was previously capable of and I was able to finish the past couple pages in only about ten hours total. Granted, page 16 is pretty simple.
Still, if I'm able to get enough work going to keep my head above water, I'm considering boosting the comic to two updates a week. Wednesdays and Saturdays. Or maybe move them to Mondays and Fridays.
At the moment I'm surviving off commissions, but hopefully in the next week or two I'll have something more steady to rely upon. Fingers crossed!

The Wettening
Posted 12 years agoSo, my apartment flooded again. Along with everything else that has been going on I'm starting to feel like the universe is trying to send me a message.
Commissioned works were delayed a couple of days but I've already resumed working on them.
I've ordered new headphones so I'll be able to start chatting while streaming again, but it will be a while before they arrive.
Because a few people now have asked, yes I am still open for commissions and will be for the foreseeable future. Check out my featured submission to the left of this journal entry to see my prices and contact information.

Wednesday Streaming
Posted 12 years agoWhile my unpredictable sleep schedule means I'm not confident about setting a specific time, I do plan to spend much of Wednesday streaming. I've got two commissions in my queue, page 14 of "The Sprawl" ready for colours, and a third project I need to get polished up and sent out soon, so plenty of work to be done.
Keep an eye on my gallery for a stream announcement whenever I wake up.
My headphones are broken so more than likely I won't be talking during the stream, but you can see me doing that magic what I do and I try to keep up with the chatroom, replying to comments and questions.

2014 Isn't Pulling Punches
Posted 12 years agoWoke up early Monday morning to find several inches of standing water in my apartment.
My desktop tower sits on my floor. It's been airing out all day but I won't know until the morning if it will still work. I may also be without my own internet connection if the router and DSL modem were damaged.
Apologies to those who have paid for commissions. I still have my laptop so I will get them done, but they may take a few more days as I deal with this situation.

2014 Begins
Posted 12 years ago2014 is off and running.
I seem to have gained a lot of new followers over the holidays and at the very least I believe I can deliver on a new comic page every week for you to enjoy. The pages I've completed so far have all been done in an 8-10 hour day. A word of warning, since it was originally being written for a specific purpose (pitched to adult sites) there may be a slight change in tone after the first shameless sex scene now that I'm just posting it to FA. Still porny, but maybe slightly less shameless and slightly more plottish.
Of course, productivity will depend a lot on my work situation. At the moment I'm attempting to survive off commissions and freelance work with the threat of office temp work looking over me like the nightmare imagery from the movie "Brazil". I've also begun applying to go back to school and may relocate away from the most expensive city in the country to someplace where my meager artist dollars will stretch a bit further.
On top of all that, I intend to begin hosting live drawing streams beginning in the next week or so. Look for an announcement about that sometime in the next few days.
Anyways, that's the word on me for the start of the year. I hope you all had happy holidays and look forward to a great 2014!

The Sprawl, a new comic for 2014
Posted 12 years agoI've posted the first page of an adult sci-fi/fantasy comic I intend to turn into an anthology of stories on the world of Tartarus. A desolate, ruined world whose inhabitants are huddled within the megacity maze of metal and neon commonly referred to as "the Sprawl".
At the moment I can only spare a day a week to work on the comic, so I'll be uploading a page every Wednesday and it shouldn't interfere with commissions or other projects.

Commissions Information
Posted 12 years agoWhen I am accepting commission work, here is everything you need to know!
At this time, I am accepting commissions. I'll try and make my commission accepting status clear on DA and FA if anything changes.
Prices are subject to change at any time. Commission agreements made prior to price changes are not affected. Any change in prices or fees applicable to an Active Commission will be discussed before hand.
Prices on this page are base prices. Actual cost depends on factors such as the number of characters, complexity of background/costume/props, or the amount of revisions.
Requesting a Commission
1. All inquiries and requests should be sent to snowdon@gmail.com.
I do not always check my FA inbox every day. If you have a question be sure to send it to my email.
When requesting a commission you should email a concise description of your commission concept, the style(s) of commission you are interested in, and up-to-date references, if available. This includes references for backgrounds, costumes, and vehicles, if not already shown with your character(s). At this point I also need to know how large you want the finished piece to be. If you want it personal print sized vs poster sized. Any Size bigger than 8x11 300dpi will involve a higher cost.
You cannot change your mind about the size later. I cannot add pixels to an existing image, making an 8.5x11 scaled up to poster size requires starting over.
2. I respond with a quote based on the information you send.
3. Once the price and concept is agreed upon, you will need to pay the full price up front for the work. If you need to make payments, that is fine but work will not start until you are paid in full. As soon as payment is received I will begin to sketch. Revisions are allowed at this time, up to two without charge. Please note that further revisions will incur an additional fee of 10% of total cost of the piece per revision. A revision in this case is something small, ears not big enough, tail too poofy, etc. If you want the image to be redrawn completely there is a 30 dollar flat rate for a new sketch.
My PayPal email is separate from my contact email. I will provide my PayPal email once a price is agreed upon.
4. Once the sketch is approved, I will begin work on the final piece. No more revisions to the line art are accepted beyond this stage.
5. The completed image is submitted for approval. Revisions are allowed at this time, up to two without charge. Additional revisions will incur an additional fee of 10% of total cost of the piece per revision. Revisions in this case are color changes (eye, hair, body, etc.)
6. Upon approval of completed piece, I will send a high-res PNG for personal viewing. Barring missed or incorrect character details clearly shown in the provided reference(s), no further revisions will be made after the completed piece has been approved.
7. You are free to post the web file to your own personal gallery, website, etc., with credit to me. I will likely do the same, citing you as the client unless you request to remain anonymous.
IMPORTANT: Add my email address to your "approved" list! If my emails are getting lost in your spam folder that doesn't do either of us any good.
Generally, I will accept:
-Any clean works; works with non-sexual nudity (excl. depictions of children); and depictions of blood/violence. Adult works are also accepted, but incur an additional fee.
I will not accept work of the following nature:
-No Vore, Ageplay, or Scat.
All information presented is for personal commission work, if you'd like to contact me regarding concept\production art for games, television or other works feel free and we can discuss my rates and availability for such projects.
In commissioning me, you agree to the following:
-You, the Client, agree to the payment schedules set for a specific commission type. (this can be discussed through E-mail)
-I, the Artist, retain the rights to display works in personal or promotional venues (personal website, portfolios, etc.) whether digital, printed, or original, as well as all applicable rights to the artwork as stated under Copyright Law. Unused art may be reused for other purposes.
-Client may repost works in personal gallery with a link/credit to the Artist. Client is also free to alter art for personal use (such as icons, signature banners, and printed material for non-commercial use (e.g.: printing a poster to hang in one's room)).
-Commissioned work is for personal use ONLY, and not intended to be used for profit or mass reproduction.
-Revisions are permitted during the "sketch" and "final" phases of Commissions, and are limited to two free revisions per phase. Additional revisions will incur an additional fee of 10% of total cost of the piece per revision.
Total Scrapping of the first sketch will result in a 30 dollar flat fee to re-start.
-With the exception of missing and/or incorrectly depicted character details, the Artist will not revise a completed piece that has already been approved by the Client.
-The Artist reserves the right to refuse a commission for any reason.
Payments, Refunds & Cancellations
-I only accept Paypal. I request that the full amount is paid up front before work starts on your piece. Payment info will be shared via email at that time. When sending a payment, please include your username (if applicable) and what you're paying for in the transaction notes. Let me know through email what address I should expect payment from, if different from your primary contact email.
-A cancellation can be requested at any point. If a cancellation is requested after the sketch is approved and payment has been received, a partial refund will be issued (50% of the total cost). I will not accept a cancellation request if a piece is in the final stages of completion (typically when shading is applied). I will not issue refunds for completed work.
-As I am expected by my clients to conduct myself in a professional manner, I expect my clients to show me the same courtesy.
FAQ
What program(s)/equipment do you use to draw?
I almost exclusively use Adobe Photoshop CS6 and a Toshiba Portege tablet PC.
Do you do commercial work?
Yes. I have been involved in videogames, television and print media. I may or may not be available for commercial work. Feel free to contact me for further information.
How long does it take you to finish a commission?
A few days to a few months. It depends on the style and complexity of the commission, the size of my current queue, the amount of time it takes to get a response, etc. Smaller pieces like Icons and single-character sketches are typically done faster. Multiple-character pieces or pieces with complex background elements take longer.
Will you keep my commission private (up to a certain date/forever)?
If you need to have a commission kept private for a certain period of time (for instance, as a birthday gift), I will gladly honor your request. Please let me know at the time of inquiry if this will need to be the case.
Requests for commissions to never be publicly displayed incur an additional fee of 50.00. Posting work in high-traffic sites is essentially an advertisement of my skills and allows my work to be visible to potential customers. Not being able to promote my work results in lost revenue.
Do you still have the commission I got from you (x time) ago?
I typically keep all source and high-res files from work that I've done. If I happen to have your commission files intact, I will send another posting and high-res file free of charge. However, over time unforeseen circumstances do arise and I cannot guarantee I will have access to those files indefinitely.
Do you take requests for free art?
No.

Yes. I have been involved in videogames, television and print media. I may or may not be available for commercial work. Feel free to contact me for further information.

Coming Soon: Commissions!
Posted 12 years agoI'm dusting off my FA account!
The past few years wound up being crazier and busier than I ever would have imagined, but I now have two complete graphic novels and a TV series under my belt. I've got a third graphic novel in the works, but an unpublished book doesn't pay the bills and so I'll soon be posting commission information. Look forward to it!
I haven't been doing much anthro artwork as of late and everything in my gallery here is ancient. I'll try and whip up a couple of pieces to post here, in the meantime you can check out my illustration gallery over at www.steampowered.net to see the kind of stuff I've been doing more recently.
Cheers!

Pencil>Stylus
Posted 15 years ago My scanner stopped working about a month ago. Rather, it still functioned, but my hard drive with Windows XP stopped working and so my scanner, which does not work under Vista or Windows 7, can no longer be used.
I got a tablet PC shortly before my scanner stopped being of use. I love this thing. It's a lot of fun for doodling, and perfect for colouring. Still...I enjoy drawing with pencil and paper much more. I don't get nearly as much control over my line quality using my tablet. Fine for rough doodles and simple pictures, not so great for complex line art.
Tomorrow I'm getting a new videocard to get my desktop up and running again, and heading to the mall to pick up a new scanner. Looking forward to it, will help me in resuming my weekly webcomic updates so I ca wrap up the Spud comic and start something new.
Once I've knocked out a few new illustrations, everything I've posted so far is years old, I also plan to start up commissions again. I'll post information and prices for that once I'm ready to start taking requests.
