Cockatrice Information
Posted 10 years agoI get asked a lot about my cockatrice character, Vellux, and I certainly have developed a good deal on my own, but I do owe a great deal of information to the original creator, Jen Sabado. She had developed a great deal of the cockatrice's world and society before becoming involved with a now long departed webcomic called Spellshocked. It was a great story but one of the characters really caught my interest, a female necromancy student named Thula.
Thula
We had conversed for a short time and I was able to get some information about cockatrice abilities and their caste based society.
- Sorcerer (Pure magic energy; white)
- Necromancer (Death magic; black)
- Mage (Elemental magic; red, blue, purple, orange. Possibly yellow, I haven't decided)
- Druid or Ranger (Life magic; brown, green)
Mages throw around spells based on fire, water, earth, and air. Druids or rangers are actually the same caste but different levels of power; a ranger would be a match for a mage, and they are rarer than are druids. (These aren't their own names for the castes, but translations, of course). The life magic caste is the one that's most common. Sorcerers were the least common and the most powerful of them all, and before they were all killed off they were the cockatrice ruling caste.
Cockatrice castes
For my part, cockatrice have the ability of petrification of other beings, but they are immune to the effect amongst their own species. They also have a third eyelid which, as a mercy to others, blocks their deadly gaze. They can still see as normal but it does give their eyes a silvery appearance. As I've always said, making lawn ornaments of others does not endear you much with the local townsfolk. As spellcasting is common, a cockatrice can learn 'stone to flesh' spells if they so choose.

Next Year's Movies, Today

Because you need an earworm
Posted 10 years agoWhen criminals in this world appear
And break the laws that they should fear
Who frighten all who see or hear
The cry goes up both far and near for Underdog!
(Underdog!) Underdog! (Underdog!)
Speed of lightning! Roar of thunder!
Fighting all who rob or plunder!
Underdog! (Oh-ah-ah-ah-ah) Underdog!
When in this world the headlines read
Of those whose hearts are filled with greed
Who rob and steal from those in need
To right this wrong with blinding speed goes Underdog!

Convention Fun - Furpocalypse Review
Posted 11 years agoI have to say this convention turned out better than had expected it might. The attendance seemed rather decent for a convention reboot although about the only downside was the more limited amount of programming. It's always good to catch up with some friends and artists and get a few new commissions.
My art quest this year was to find an artist for an MLP OC griffon character I recently came up with and I'm working on an intro story for. I have a couple of artists in the works on that regards. A big thank you has to go out to Diana Harlan Stein for giving me Con Crud (a plushie). It's along the same lines of other plushie microbes, germs and viruses I've seen around, but a lot more funny.
Long live Furpocalypse! Looking forward to seeing you next year.

Convention Fun
Posted 11 years agoAh, Halloween. And nearly time for convention season. Looking forward to getting to Furpocalypse, the Connecticut con taking the place of Furfright. (Oct 31 - Nov 2) Hoping it will be just as good.
And then on it's heels it is off to Long Island for the Doctor Who convention! (Nov 7 - 9) Colin Baker and Paul McGann are the Doctors there this year. Had a blast last year with Sylvester McCoy.

Happy 30th!
Posted 11 years agoA big cheer out to Ghostbusters in its anniversary. Got to see it on the big screen again this week. And to add to the fun was the family, parents and kids, all dressed up in uniforms and equipment. That topped the evening off with a cherry.
Purple pondering
Posted 11 years agoSo this evening a friend and I are headed out to dinner, we had not meant to do it but it turned out that we both ended up wearing purple shirts. A young lady on the way out of the dining establishment exclaimed happily as she saw us and said that she loved the color purple. She then asked us what we were wearing purple for? I tried a pat answer that they were happy Friday purple shirts but that didn't seem to fly. Finally I just admitted that we hadn't planned it and that they didn't really mean anything. She fussed that that wasn't as fun and then hurried on to catch up to her other friends.
This led me to wonder what might have been a better answer for her?

Dining Adventure!
Posted 11 years agoWent out for sushi tonight with the gang. I do recommend Sushi X in Latham if you get the chance to go. The food there is quite good. They have an all you can eat dinner deal, but you do have to eat everything you order.
Being a diligent culinary explorer I found an item on the menu I hadn't noticed before called Baby Tako. No one at the table knew what this was so we ordered that and a couple other small items. A bowl later arrives with four of what look like wrinkly shrunken plum tomatoes. Plus there were funny little curly bits on the bottom of each one. This would not be at all confused with mini bite-sized tacos.
My fellow diner glances into the bowl, "Oh, those are squid."
(Pause for a moment to let that sink in.)
"Ah. Squid. Very well then."
I can say that I did not take a bite of it. I took two in fact. I found my little baby squid very chewing and I didn't care for the flavor, but at least I tried it.
I have come to the determination that I prefer to eat things that have no discernible body parts and it does not have a face.

Posted 13 years agoYeah, making all the arrangements. I hope the weather will cooperate this time and I can get out to the west coast without missing half of the con. Darn snowstorms.
But first, FurFright at the end of the month.
Boo yeah.
Watch out for the one in the fez, who is not the Doctor.
