So.

I beat it.

My sense of taste is blunted and I have dry mouth. This is going to be a thing for the rest of my life. My voice is changed which I hate. But the right side of my vocal chords aren't paralyzed after all hurray!

I'm cancer free.

Another piece of good news.

If I'm correct, the final test results are in and the Thyroid biopsy is BENIGN.

Going to to go to the cancer resource center before my appointment. Gotta see if they can help.

Then it's the first day of radiation.

Wish me luck so I'm reminded I'm not alone.

So i've got a minor yet important update.

Out of 47 lymph nodes only 2 had cancer cells. So it looks like I'll only need radiation therapy.

Tomorrow the appointments start.

Got home this morning and damn it feels good to be here.

Showering poses some interesting challenges tho.

Day 7:

Took a swallow test, and they decided I was doing well enough to try minced food.

I had pasta. It was a chore but I ate it all. Then later I had a milkshake. It was a chore but I drank it.

Also had puppy therapy.

Day 8:

They removed the feeding tubes. I have never had so much enjoyment being able to blow my nose.

They also removed the splint from where they did the forearm flap procedure. I have to change it every other day.

I'M GOING HOME TOMORROW.

Also more puppy therapy.

Day 5: They put a cap on my trach valve so I could officially breathe on my own. If I could do it for 24 hours they said they would remove it.

Which brings us to...

Day 6:

They removed the trach! It's going to take a while, but the wound will heal.

So far so good!

Keeping it brief because I'm still recovering from surgery three days later but when I came out of anesthesia I realized an important thing:

THE CANCER PAIN WAS FINALLY GONE

In Salt Lake City.

In the Cancer Institute.

1 hour and 21 minutes until the end of Act 1.

Last night was a great, emotional day for me. Hung out with some friends and then I got a text from my roomie that someone reached out and was waiting for me. So I wrapped up my visit and went home, wondering who was waiting for me.

Turns out it was my dearest friend I haven't seen in almost a decade. He was visiting his dad and when I saw him sitting on the sofa I started crying. I did that for a good ten minutes while hugging him all that time.

For the first time in a week, my pain levels were nothing. The power of endorphins.

I'm going to see him again before I leave. And I might see him and his husband (who I also love) during my recovery. I hope so. I miss his husband so much.

Anyway. I'll be on a train soon, so this is goodbye for now. I'll keep my eye on the FA page and will try to update you all when I get to Salt Lake City. Then you'll hear from me again when I'm out of surgery.

I will be okay. I am loved. And I love you all.

2 Days, 8 Hours and 25 minutes until my surgery.

Not gonna lie, this last week before surgery has had an uptick of pain levels. I now have a near constant pain level of 4 or 5, I think. It's getting worse, but it'll get better soon.

Also, still have yet to contact any officials about unemployment. I think I might have to use my ko-fi account yet again to help. While I don't have a goal set, any little bit contributed will be added if I have to go this route.

I'm starting to think of the time from May to September 22nd as "Act 1". The time of Surgery and the start of radiation therapy as "Act 2". The recovery from the radiation is "Act 3".

I am my Hero's Journey, I guess.

I think I have hit my limit on reaching out to people regarding my cancer. I think now if people want to ask our mutual friends about it, you have my permission. They can then reach out to me.

So if we have mutual friends, ask them if they heard. It will ease the burden off my shoulders by a lot.
