EAGLE BASE, Bosnia and Herzegovina -- It was raining "cats and dogs" and I was late for physical training.

Traffic was backed up at Fort Campbell, Ky., and was moving way too slowly. I was probably going to be late and I was growing more and more impatient.

The pace slowed almost to a standstill as I passed Memorial Grove, the site built to honor the soldiers who died in the Gander airplane crash, the worst redeployment accident in the history of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

Because it was close to Memorial Day, a small American flag had been placed in the ground next to each soldier's memorial plaque.

My concern at the time, however, was getting past the bottleneck, getting out of the rain and getting to PT on time.

All of a sudden, infuriatingly, just as the traffic was getting started again, the car in front of me stopped.

A soldier, a private of course, jumped out in the pouring rain and ran over toward the grove.

I couldn't believe it! This knucklehead was holding up everyone for who knows what kind of prank. Horns were honking.

I waited to see the butt-chewing that I wanted him to get for making me late.

He was getting soaked to the skin. His BDUs were plastered to his frame. I watched-as he ran up to one of the memorial plaques, picked up the small American flag that had fallen to the ground in the wind and the rain, and set it upright again.

Then, slowly, he came to attention, saluted, ran back to his car, and drove off.

I'll never forget that incident. That soldier, whose name I will never know, taught me more about duty, honor, and respect than a hundred books or a thousand lectures.

That simple salute -- that single act of honoring his fallen brother and his flag -- encapsulated all the Army values in one gesture for me. It said, "I will never forget. I will keep the faith. I will finish the mission. I am an American soldier."

I thank God for examples like that.

And on this Memorial Day, I will remember all those who paid the ultimate price for my freedom, and one private, soaked to the skin, who honored them.

I know I am out on deployment. I know I need to focus on what is going on here. It is hard to not worry about what is going on back home though. This is my first time being deployed after getting married. I have been deployed befor and several times in fact. Its alot different when you are married though. At least for me it is. I worry about things that I can't do anything about. I somtimes ask about things that are alright but due to the fact that I can't be there to see it happening I worry. I love my with all my heart. I just feel so helpless now more than ever with her having to have to go to the hospital. I know she will pull through and will be ok soon. I have faith in her and are freind Leo(former marines and works in the medical field). It is hard not being able to be there. I know even if I was there right now there would be nothing I could do but wait until she recovers. Just wish I could be there right now still and hold her hand and tell her everything will be all right and tell her how much I love her.

Well I am alive and well. there is heat and more heat here. I miss my I just worry about her and love her so much. I will be here for a few months and then head back to grab her befor heading to VA. oh well the extra money will help when we move up there. waiting on the navy to pay my travel claim still I put it in about 7 weeks ago. dang navy taking forever.

Well I have arrived in SC at Fort Jackson/ camp McCrady for training. Turns out I will have my weekends to have fun and I got wireless internet that is better than what I did have yesterday. I am sitting by my bed with my laptop right now and the internet is so fast compared to what I had 5 second load time instead of waiting for like 5 to 10 minutes for somethings. well I will hear from tomorrow when she is heading back out of the camping area and I will tell her all about it.

Well I am sitting here is Little Creek, VA. I been here for almost 2 weeks now and they have me making phone calls. Calling the primary next of kin for people that are deployed and checking to make sure all is well. It sucks but its something that is nice to have done I think. I should be headed out to Fort Jackson in SC on saturday. From there I will receive training. I been told by others that have been to the same training it should be about 3 weeks and over half of it is shooting. I will post a journal as soon as I can. I am unsure about how the internets will be there so I will let you all know how it goes when i can. *huggs for everyone*

Well I am out and about. Currently I am processed through here in VA and turns out I will be going to do some training in SC. All you guys at FWA have fun and go get some art from my wife.
