Horrible web sites: where's the login?
Posted 11 years agoJust venting over a bad usability feature I'm starting to see on some pretty big-name sites now, particularly the "cloud" ones like GoogleDrive or Dropbox. It's the one where you go to the main website to login only to see this splash screen with the link to sign up front and center. The login? Forget about it, you have to search for it, good luck if you're already registered and want to use the services!

Posted 11 years agoLooking for some crap to read on the internet I've stumbled onto reading about crazy stuff that gets posted on Tumblr and ran into the concept of cultural appropriation just how far some people take it on there.
I admit I often feel guilty about it, I mean this account's character after all is a Tibetan antelope which is a real animal but relatively rare in the fandom, naturally the character has taken on cultural aspects of his own region of origin. I acknowledge the privilege of living in the United States and the reality of living in an occupied land is simply hard to fathom, unless of course you're from a Native American culture and know what it's like to be practically forgotten by the rest of the world... I wonder how many furries are really guilty of this as a whole, I mean, I know I've seen plenty of fursonas that have a Native American vibe to them or furries of African animals shown having vaguely African cultures, or Eastern dragons, or anime furs taking on Japanese culture and I wonder how many of them are from the nations or cultures they represent. The biggest reason I think furries get away with it is because the fandom has fantasy at it's core. Also important is the fact that many fursonas are to some degree a representation of what a furry identifies with, Halapmir for example is kind of a representation of a more pacifist and mindful side of me.
Just how far does one take this though? Cultural appropriation as I understand it adopting elements of an oppressed culture, removing meaning from it and not facing the real oppression the original culture had. Like just about anything else though this concept seems to have been mutated on the internet into raging over minor things, and cases of culture actually being shared by a wide scope of the world. To me the logical end to that is claiming the very nature of being a homo sapien, which incidentally seems to have originated from Africa.

Posted 11 years agoBeen wondering if I'm the only one slightly annoyed by or at least cringe a little at commercials that try too hard to use social media lingo, er... the ones that seem to believe that everyone under 20 Tweet and text when they talk instead of... talk.
Of course, I always found commercials off anyways. People don't act like real people in them. Radio commercials are the worst because people like McDonalds food too damn much. If someone came to me getting all excited about the new whatever burger and how their entire life seems to revolve around whatever burgers to the degree some radio commercials play out I'd be more then a little sad for them. When a Zombie Needs to Be Less of a Zombie
Posted 11 years agoAfter working on a pirate themed image for work that involves a skull I'm starting to realize that when I draw skeletons and corpses (for zombies) I have a bad habit of tumbling head first into the uncanny valley. o.O
It doesn't help that they're human subjects I guess, or that a zombie is de-facto the very bottom of the valley (besides maybe an actual corpse, in 19th century post-mortem photo... wait... don't Google Image Search that what's wrong with you!!!) So, now I need to figure out the nuances of making a dead thing not look quite so dead... hmm. This is going to be a challenge.

I'm not crazy: Lara Croft and her cigar
Posted 11 years agoAnyone ever remember something, usually a small detail, but you cannot find an imagine of it on Google? It's like it happened you know it happened but there's nothing online about it so it therefore doesn't exist anymore.
That thing has come up when I was bout to edit a TvTropes page, CigarChomper to mention that Lara Croft posed with one in a very rare case of the trope being done by a female. After a search, people in forums have mentioned seeing it but any images that get posted are missing. It's almost like there was some effort to purge all evidence that Lara was a smoker. Pics or it didn't happen? Well... guess what.
I guess the only other thing has has least gotten a few more mentions now that I've searched it again. Basically it's a scene in the Flintstones movie where a pterodactyl shits, or rather drowns, someone's car at some completely random point. And I do mean random, I mean... I was originally reminded when I saw The Nostalgia Critic review the movie and I was waiting for him to mention it. Because it sure as hell qualifies as a "Big Lipped Alligator Moment". But no, no mention. And then I search for it, and again barely no mention. I figured it must have been removed from the DVD or something and I must have been crazy for having remembered it.

Proposal for furry writers and musicians: Cover Commissions
Posted 11 years agoI just thought of an idea, would any furry writes or musicians out there like to commission images for their song or story submissions? They can include both a smaller web image for furaffinity and full res one that will be either in the dimensions of an LP cover or book cover respectively. I might even offer a couple free ones to get it started. I'm thinking the covers will make the submissions look a lot more pro and unique.

Just taking random images off of Google's image search using them in websites, logos and sold products is not a good thing to do! And yet people don't seem to care. Also, not to mention the images are usually piss poor quality because they're web images and yet people keep wanting to use them in large prints.

Obervation on Flag Waving, Wearing, Advertising People
Posted 11 years agoI would just like to know when it became "patriotic" to blatantly desecrate the U.S. flag. It's been kind of a phenomenon since Sept. 11 2001. And I'm not just talking about hideously ugly clothing with the flag printed on it, but it's use in advertising usually by people wanting to convey an "All American" flavor.
I mean, I get it when it's used to protest the American government but more often then not it seems to be used by people that want to express nationalism and it is just bizarre because it should be common knowledge that it's disrespectful towards the very thing they claim to be respecting. And from what I hear we are one of the few nations that has this strange little fetish, whereas in other parts of the world this "put our flag on everything" craze is considered a little too fascist for comfort.
And yeah, whatever. I don't give a crap about what is "patriotic" or not because I have nothing but contempt for nationalism and the borders we set up around us. I understand that the issue would be way more offensive to someone in the armed forces because they've fought for the country that flag represents.
BUT
It's just stupid and hypocritical that's all, and I don't care that flag code violations are not enforced because it's not a legal issue it's an etiquette one. I mean, it's not illegal to be a complete asshole to someone but that doesn't save you from the consequences of doing so, consequences being that people will know you for being an asshole.

TOS: Second Life Commissions
Posted 11 years agoAfter running into more then a few headaches during one commission I would like to make some very specific updates to how Second Life commissions are going to be run from here on out. These changes will take place immediately and later I'll be adding it to the regular TOS
1. Biggest one is that all custom commissions will be paid through PayPal and not through Second Life, and in dollars and real world currency not lindens. This is to better calculate the value of projects and more importantly to protect both me and you by providing a better way to keep track of payments. I absolutely need to do this because if I ever need to return money I need to have an accurate and easily accessible way to find out what I owe.
2. The requirements of the commission will be laid out in a written agreement before any work is done, this agreement will be conducted over email only, not Second Life. Any edits or changes will be discussed over email not Second Life, and will require additional payments. If there is any failure to meet these requirements I will refund the amount paid for those additional requirements only. If uploads to Second Life become excessive I will have to calculate and record them then start adding it to the bill over email, this includes multiple edits that require extra uploads. Objects created outside of Second Life like meshes will need to be approved before they are uploaded.
3. Custom commissions will all be based on existing products that have been created only by me, unless they are architectural buildings which I would lay out terms for below. I will not edit creations by other people, including avatars created by other people. This is because of digital property concerns and because of copy-mod-transfer restrictions. And specifically I will not be taking on any commissions for new products because they often require extensive debugging for scripts, I will only work with what I know works and what I know I can make. This is non negotiable.
4. Architectural buildings and land edits will of course be limited to prim limits. Scripted parts will be pre-existing ones or based on previous ones I made that I know are functional.
5. Any custom scripts will need to be easy edits like changing text, animated textures, particle effects, etc. I reserve the right to refuse any custom scripts if I'm not sure on how to create them.

1. Biggest one is that all custom commissions will be paid through PayPal and not through Second Life, and in dollars and real world currency not lindens. This is to better calculate the value of projects and more importantly to protect both me and you by providing a better way to keep track of payments. I absolutely need to do this because if I ever need to return money I need to have an accurate and easily accessible way to find out what I owe.
2. The requirements of the commission will be laid out in a written agreement before any work is done, this agreement will be conducted over email only, not Second Life. Any edits or changes will be discussed over email not Second Life, and will require additional payments. If there is any failure to meet these requirements I will refund the amount paid for those additional requirements only. If uploads to Second Life become excessive I will have to calculate and record them then start adding it to the bill over email, this includes multiple edits that require extra uploads. Objects created outside of Second Life like meshes will need to be approved before they are uploaded.
3. Custom commissions will all be based on existing products that have been created only by me, unless they are architectural buildings which I would lay out terms for below. I will not edit creations by other people, including avatars created by other people. This is because of digital property concerns and because of copy-mod-transfer restrictions. And specifically I will not be taking on any commissions for new products because they often require extensive debugging for scripts, I will only work with what I know works and what I know I can make. This is non negotiable.
4. Architectural buildings and land edits will of course be limited to prim limits. Scripted parts will be pre-existing ones or based on previous ones I made that I know are functional.
5. Any custom scripts will need to be easy edits like changing text, animated textures, particle effects, etc. I reserve the right to refuse any custom scripts if I'm not sure on how to create them.

Posted 11 years agoHey I was wondering if I would be cool if I posted some clean stuff on here, I mean, I do what I want regardless but I think that I need to transition my original Rimpala account back since it seems to lost traffic.
In particular I'm thinking of a badge series and maybe some extensions to my "how to draw" series.
And of course there will still be the dirty, messy fetish stuff. That's my bread and butter after all. Also sometimes when I mean "clean" I mean "vanilla" and when I mean "vanilla" I mean "devoid of excretory body functions".

Rap "Feats." in Pop Songs VS Lame Radio Edits
Posted 11 years agoI want to talk about something that bugs me but not enough to call it a rant, but it still bugs me so I'm not exactly musing about it, therefore I'm calling this a "munt".
It's about radio censorship, which is a pet peeve of mine. I mean, so much so that I went out and bought Purple Rain on vinyl just because I want to hear Prince scream at the end of "Doves Cry", because the radio cuts out half of the song dammit!!! Either you play the whole thing or you don't! Don't shorten my songs! Don't play the long running songs by the Who or The Doors either if you can't follow this rule! Don't cut out the bridge in "My Sharona" or "Rio" It ruins everything! "Rio" isn't even that long of a song! UGH! Anyways I'm getting off track...
This is about a relatively new phenomenon in pop music where somewhere in the song there's a rapping bridge. I actually have no problem with that, the problem I have is with whoever decides to cut the rap out of the song as a radio edit.
And... ok this is going to kind of going into a racial topic even though I'm as white as it gets, I don't really listen to hip hop because it's not my bag or culture and haven't since the 90's. That doesn't mean I can't respect the artists, their work or where they come from though. When the music execs. are all like "Lets throw this hippity hop artist into the contract with McPopStar to appeal to the urban youth!" here and then "OH SHIT THIS SONG IS ENTIRELY TOO BLACK FOR RADIO!" there, it seems shockingly unfair. Well, maybe not shockingly because I like everyone knows that entertainment people suck and are horrible bigots, and horrible people in general.
And examples? The earliest instance I remember is SugarRay's Fly FEAT. reggae artist Super Cat. One radio station back then included the reggae/rap but all the stations today play the now-old-school song without it.
Because they're a bunch of squares, dad-y-o. *Makes a little outline square* And the song is empty without the "Like a birdy in the sky I'm so high!" and Super Cat doesn't sing anything the least bit offensive, but hay, it's too black for radio right?
Another example: the Lady Marmalade remake in Moulin Rouge. Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa, and Pink all perform in the video, but Lil' Kim is turned into a background character on the radio who only gets to sing "HON HON HON HON HON HON" The difference between the two mediums was very noticeable. She was even mentioned by name in the song despite not doing anything! What did you do Kim? What was your contribution? "HONHONHONHONHONHONHHON!" That's it?! The 00's were weird sometimes.
More recent, and the example that made me think of this is "Suit and Tie" which I learned featured Jay Z rather innocently rapping about dressing sharp at one point. This was news to me because up until that point I'd just catch it on the radio, mostly in restaurants or the like, guess what's cut out of the song?

Posted 11 years ago I'm hit hard like a lot of people are about learning about Robin Williams' death, he was probably among by favorite comedians I didn't expect him to go for at least another 20 years, though every famous person I knew seems to be dying on me lately, which is kind of distressing in of itself. Distressing in that, he was the same age my dad is right now!
I don't know about anyone else though, but I had a sense that something was not well with Williams. The last two things I remember seeing him in was Old Dogs and an episode of The Crazy Ones, a couple of critical flops where as an actor Robin Williams seemed exhausted and maybe a bit jaded. You know what I mean, depressed? It's like he didn't want to be in the roles he was in. It's like I can sense when a comedian is going through a bit of sad clown syndrome sometimes.
