Megaplex 2025 Meme
General | Posted 3 months agoAdrastos Onca (AKA HaniaThePariah)
Nicked from Vixyy, Vrghr, Walt and quite a few others I'm sure.
Convention attending: Megaplex
Days staying: Friday - Tuesday
Who are you rooming with?: One of my folks, off-site
Where will you be?: Convention Center for the con itself, and I believe I'll be staying in Hampton Inn for the room.
How is the best way to find you?: Look for a fellow in a flatcap, usually dressed either semi-formally or in T-shirts, and a look of someone done with life. Probably hanging around with Vixyy, Helix, Andrea or the others.
What do you look like?: A scrawny white guy standing at about five foot seven, brown hair that's steadily graying and blue eyes. Usually wearing a paperboy cap, as well as polos, button-down shirts, t-shirts, usually paired with slacks and jumpers (mostly various cardigans.) I also tend to wear two necklaces along with my con ID - one depicting an olive laurel wreath and the other depicting a jaguar.
What is your gender?: A cis bloke
How old are you?: Just turned 31 at the start of the month, but feel quite a bit older.
Can I talk to you?: I don't see why you couldn't.
Can I hug and/or snuggle you?: Ask me first and I may be open to a hug. Snuggling however is mostly reserved for good friends or more than friends.
Are you nice?: I make an effort to be. Even if I can sometimes be a bit blunt.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?: Just holler "Adrastos!" or "Hania." Otherwise, feel free to approach and say hello, I don't bite.
What can we talk about?: Nearly anything, though matters such as politics and religion should be handled civilly and delicately, if they should ever come up at all.
Can I get you something to drink?: Sure, it does depend on what's in the drink however. I tend to stay away from alcohol and dairy for instance. But water, tea or ginger ale are welcome.
Can I take your picture?: As long as you ask first, though with all of the fursuiters around, I'm not sure why you would want to photograph me.
Attending any events?:
Saturday - Meet the Guests of Honour, Furst Aid and Random Trivia for Bad Prizes to name a few.
Sunday - The Greymuzzle Breakfast, where I'll be hanging out with the likes of VixyyFox, Vrghr, Walt and others. the Fursuit Parade, Mew-tuals - a feline furs meetup, possibly Kiyofox's panel on modular synths, and either Skyrim: Trivia at the Bannered Mare or A History of Kobolds to name a few.
Monday - Charlie Adler Live Q&A, Beginner Yoga, Paws and Effect, and possibly ending off with Furaoke among others.
Nicked from Vixyy, Vrghr, Walt and quite a few others I'm sure.

So, I've been on the down low for the past three weeks. I'm sure quite a few of you know why that is. But, to keep a long story short, I ended up being hit with pneumonia and went septic days later. It pretty much knocked me on my arse and seemed to be getting worse each day. I went to the ER, and had to be transferred to a hospital in Miami where I stayed for what ended up being two weeks. Over the course of which involved two procedures (one of them surgical) to drain the fluid that had filled my lungs.
So I was basically lying in bed with a tube in my side for over twenty four hours. While this was all going on, I kept in touch with
Vixyyfox and was giving them updates on my condition, along with other furs who had long become something of a chosen family.
And well, one day I chanced a look at my FA page on my phone and found my shoutbox full, I guess as much as I wanted this all to be on the down low, a certain fennec fox had put the word out.
Truth be told, I am very grateful. It did make that period feel a little easier to bear. And while I'm still kind of out of it, I'm definitely on the mend at this point.
So I just want to say...Thank You.
Adrastos, signing off.

I Am Not Dead, and Brief Thoughts on Hurricanes
General | Posted a year ago...Not that I would blame anyone for arriving at that conclusion. Even by my standards, or lack there of, there really hasn't been that much going on in this neck of the woods, so speaking. Well, in truth, quite a lot has happened. Some of it for the best, and much of it not.
I hope those who's lives have been uprooted by Hurricane Helene are able to get food, water and power, and a roof over their heads. We were fortunate enough to only get caught in the outer bands, but I realize that is very much the exception, and for a lot of people it has been far worse, especially as efforts to offer aid has been repeatedly obstructed. I know, no shit right?
Regardless, we aren't out of the woods yet, with Milton on the horizon, time to buckle down or get out, if able...best I can say is that at least it doesn't seem as powerful as Helene (only a category 3) but with the storm surge, things could still wind up being pretty dire.
I apologize for the lack of substance here, and my unwillingness to go into things as much, but I just wanted to reassure people that this account is still alive, if in a bit of limbo.
This is precisely why I do not post journals so often...
[Edit 7 Oct. 2024: Well, this aged quickly. Milton's a Cat.4 now.]

Signal Boost for HelixTheFallen

HelixTheFallen has recently finished a series of stories called Interludes, three of which went up today (The Apprentice, Seasons of Fey and Minky's First Flight) among the rest of his similarly vivid body of work. Its certainly worth a read, so feel free to check his material out. Its doesn't get near the amount of attention it should considering the man's output.A Hallow Goodbye for Now: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/56716607/

The Voice of Dog
General | Posted a year agoEvening, Another late one for me it seems.
I hope you all had good week, that your daily grinds weren't too taxing and the weekends were pleasant, especially if you were celebrating any holidays or festivals (be it the International Trans Day of Visibility, Easter Sunday or in my case, the Greater Dionysia.)
March has been full of surprises, not least of which was that on the thirteenth, one of my shorts, Outfoxed, was featured on the writing podcast, The Voice of Dog.
https://www.thevoice.dog/episode/outfoxed-by-hania
I suppose it wasn't entirely unexpected, I had submitted it about a year ago after having come around to the idea of audio books. Figured there wasn't any harm in it, so I threw the script together and put it out there just to see if Rob would like it or not. And afterwords, promptly forgot about it after awhile.
Rob MacWolf's reading of the material is outstanding, he brought the story to life in a way I hadn't really imagined when I had penned Outfoxed back in 2018 (much like how I felt when the same story was released in print when it was included in a Thursday Prompt anthology collection released the next year.) It's...surreal, more than anything, and I really can't thank him enough.
So now that it's gone and come to pass...I'm humbled and honoured that one of my pieces made the cut.

A Belated Final Farewell to Sy Sable.
General | Posted 2 years agoKhairete...
...I'll be up front, I was putting this off for days, even though I had never known Mark 'Sylys Sable' Merlino personally, nor his partner Rod. My introduction to them was through The Fandom documentary back in 2020. And yet, I felt no less concerned when I heard the news of Mark's hospitalization and no less crushed when he passed on shortly after.
Sy was, as many have already described him over the years, one of the fathers of this fandom so speak, he and Rod were pioneers and we wouldn't have furry as we know it today without them. He created the weasel-like Skiltaire species and gave them a life of their own, both he and Rod helped start Confurence which made way for many, many conventions to follow in its wake.
May the Earth be gentle with him, and my condolences to Rod and both of their families.

Megaplex 2023 and thoughts towards the future
General | Posted 2 years agoKhairete
First off, I would like to say that the future of my craft on here seems a bit uncertain. Do not worry, I won't be abandoning the account or cease uploading stories or anything of the sort (though, I'm sure it can feel that way with my inconsistent uploads.)
Rather, I've been considering a change in pen name/internet handle, so that I'm no longer having to share one with one of my characters. It may take some time, but I'm sure it will do wonders in dispelling any confusion. I will still wear the same con badge though, why not after all?
Of course, I won't be able to make it fully official, I'll probably have the same username that I came up with on a whim when I joined, unless someone on the site's staff finally gets around to adding a function to change it. But never mind that.
I'll post an update on when I have a name picked out. Until then, I suppose you could continue to refer to me as "Hania" if you wish.
Speaking of uncertainty though, I think it's time to come clean on a matter I've been keeping close to my chest. For the question of whether I could make it happen or not seemed like a toss up at best for the better part of the year.
Should things go smoothly in the next couple weeks, I will be attending Megaplex this year, in spite of it all.
Admittedly to feeling a bit anxious given all of the draconian anti-LGBTQ+ legislation which has passed in my state, among the many other ways it has been dragged through the mud. No matter how bad it gets however, I can't let fear rule my actions anymore, and I want to be there for those I cherish.
Thank you for reading and for watching,
Hania

Update: Account Retaken, the Cowardly Wanker Got the Boot...
General | Posted 2 years agoSo it has been a few days since my warning, and as frustrating as it all has been. I have come to regain control of my Telegram account, strengthened security, changed my password and will generally be far more vigilant.
This being said, it would be wise to wait a few days before contacting me on there, un-blocking my account etc. Just to be on the safe side.
May this guide be helpful to those who have been similarly affected.

There is a PSA which has been released regarding this scam, and I will be sharing it among my contacts. Hopefully it will be useful in avoiding further grief with it.

Reclaiming the Creative Drive And Self-Care
General | Posted 3 years agoKhairete,
Firstly, I would like to apologize for both the lateness of this particular journal, and the general lack of activity following August. So I'll start there.
Megaplex went well...for the most part, I had prioritized socializing with the likes of
VixyyFox,
Onic,
Vrghr,
Walt46,
Kiyofox and met
HelixTheFallen in the flesh for the first time; over attending events (although I still made it to a good few of them.)
I was accompanied by
Kodiak34, a fellow fur who was local to the area, he had not been aware of the con before hand, so this had been his first. My other companion,
stinkyonmain, was no stranger to them on the other hand. They too were excellent company, even if things got a bit rowdy from time to time.
Despite having no project to work on and just being there to unwind, I couldn't help but feel kind of uncomfortable this year and it did not go unnoticed. I could not help but wonder if the sun was beginning to set on my yearly convention excursions.
I feel like I was very rude and ungracious towards the con staff as well, which is unbecoming to say the least.
Either way, with one year drawing to a close and another dawning, there is a always a time for new beginnings. New chances to improve upon my short comings and continue to take steps nearer to living a virtuous life.
I'm still hard at writing, still figuring out how best to tackle the projects ahead and see them realized as best I am able to. I've made good progress on the chapter, though I've given it a rest to work on a related, albeit smaller piece. I shall not say what the specifics are regarding it for now. Needless to say, working on both has been a practice in trying to break my habit of overthinking and stressing myself out instead of just enjoying the process.
I'm also going to take time for myself. To reintroduce meditation into my daily practice and reach out to a therapist or two. It's certainly no exaggeration.
That's all for now, my readers. Again, my apologies for taking so long to get this written up and posted. With luck, I'll have some more pieces and uploaded in the near future, when they've had the proper time and care, and perhaps some commissioned art to accompany them.

On Megaplex and Recent Times.
General | Posted 3 years agoOnce again, I'll be in attendance at Megaplex in two weeks time.
The lead up has been kind of anxiety inducing after all this year has thrown at me, and especially considering my lack of output in these last two months.
I do have another short in the works, I shan't say what it is yet. But I've a feeling it will turn out to be quite important in the long run. But first, I've been hard at work continuing the overhaul of my jaguar's biography.
But I will do my best not to let it bring me down, this year's con is going to be one of respite after all. Of catching up with old friends and building bridges with new ones.
A good friend of mine will also be flying in from out of state just for this event, so that will change things up. I won't lie, I'm bloody nervous about it all.
All the same, should you happen to bump into me, feel free to say hello.
See you there.

Getting Back Up
General | Posted 4 years agoAfternoon,
After taking time to acknowledge recent events, I do believe it is time to brush myself off and get back on my feet.
Work is resuming on the next chapter. Getting back to 'Shadows' started off a tad painful, as I haven't touched the rough draft since December of 2019 and it very much showed,. So I've been in the process sorting out the eight pages worth of previously written material. Much of which consisted of retooling in their own right (it was clear I struggled a bit to keep the plot moving) so sorting those out has been the first order of business.
As I'm sure many writers will tell you, once you've written something down (especially something which took a good deal of work to come out how you like,) the first instinct is not to tamper with it until the edit. I faced the worst of this with the chapter's introduction, of all things. It wasn't terrible, but it was expository and risked Travelogue Syndrome in places.
In the last couple weeks however, ideas continue to fall into place. It seems the muses have been kind to me, and I can only hope I can transfer it all to the page as best I can.
I'm sorry this story has taken so long to continue, but better late than never.

A Death in the Family
General | Posted 4 years agoGood evening, my watchers.
My next journal was originally going to simply be an update, about what I was currently working on, future plans, perhaps a question or two about artist recommendations or if I should say anything about last month's convention.
However, the news that has reached me today is a more pressing matter. Early this morning, my grandfather on my paternal side of the family had passed away while he was being hospitalized for kidney failure. He was 89.
Thankfully it was a peaceful death, however. I ask that you forgive me if I decided to take some time off of my creative pursuits to process everything.
Compounding this, is that my grandfather on the maternal side of my family passed away as well, back in February. I chose to keep that to myself and as I had my hands full at the time, it did not leave much room to process it or to properly mourn his loss.
If indeed I do have to put things on hold for a bit and come to terms, I promise that I won't be long.
Until next time,
Hania

Talking to Myself (and a convention.)
General | Posted 4 years agoAnyone else found this year to be incredibly taxing, myopic and possibly a tad bipolar?
Yeah, me too.
Are things a bit better compared to last year?
Somewhat.
Is it enough?
Probably not.
Will we endure?
Likely so, for good or ill.
What is the meaning of existence?
Does it matter?
Is there a point to this journal?
I don't know, this kind of thing is why I don't write many journals in the first place.
Should I get to the point?
Yeah, let's cut to the chase.
Will I be at Megaplex this year?
*Turns to the readers with a deadpan stare*
Yes.

Musings
General | Posted 4 years agoKhairete,
First off, I would like to apologize for the lack of any journals these past couple of months. I've been up and down throughout 2020 and the beginning of 2021, and I never felt like I had much worthwhile to say (that wouldn't land me in zestó neró.)
So that leaves the question of where to begin. I suppose I must once again apologize for the lack of content on this page. I had to further delay work on the second chapter of Shadows as I felt the desire to re-edit the first. I'm about 3/4's of the way through that process and so far am much happier with it than before.
I've mused on the idea of possibly commissioning artwork (or at least a thumbnail) based on the story at some point. Rather than just using the thrown together mock-up I used for the original draft. I suppose it would depend on if I can afford any artists who are decent at drawing humans, as well as those who I already have a good working relationship with.
In conclusion, this account is far from dead and I hope that any who stumble on the revised first chapter of Shadows will find it to their liking, along with those which will inevitably follow.

A Small Life Update
General | Posted 5 years agoKhairete, it has been awhile since I've had anything to say hasn't it?
Where to start?
I suppose it should be obvious now that these are strange days (well, stranger) we've found ourselves in. What with all the news of the pandemic, rioting and news of a possible follow up pandemic. While not how, I'm sure, many of us expected this year to go. Its not entirely as surprising as it seems either.
My family and I have managed to stay quite safe throughout all of it fortunately, starting from March I went into quarantine - painful but necessary - and only this week did I feel safe enough to return to work.
I've also finished up a small-ish project back in June which was intended to see the light of day next month, but will instead get its moment in a year's time. Until then, I shan't say what it is, but needless to say it was a nice challenge to finish.
I'm well aware that I've been putting off work on the second chapter of 'Shadows: The Lost Clan' and so I'll be resuming work on that from here on out, and that's only a tiny measure of what I have in mind for 2020. We'll just have to wait and see.
For now, be well, be alert and stay safe.

Anyone with table space to spare at Megaplex
General | Posted 6 years ago(UPDATE: This situation has been resolved.)
This journal is the third in the efforts of multiple writers to raise awareness of writing, while raising money for Megaplex's charity drive. The original journal was written by
Vrghr. To any artists intent on attending Megaplex 2020 this coming summer, who will be setting up in the Artist's Alley or Dealer's Den.
We're looking for a small bit of table space, small enough to display and sell one book.
Vrghr, Vixyy Fox and several other writers are in the process of putting together a compilation of stories to sell in book form at Megaplex. Along with the stories, there will be a full cover illustration and possibly some interior art by other artists who wish to support the charity.
Both Vixyy and Vrghr are backing the printing costs. 100% of the proceeds go towards the con charity.
We wanted to place the book at the con store as a charity item, but Mega nixed that idea. So we're looking to see if someone else may have a square foot or so of space free to display it, and set its funds aside for the con charity later.
Vrghr, Vixyy and the other writers (and maybe the artists) will be available at the con to sign copies, if desired. We are also looking to offer the book at the panels we host there.
Let
Vixyyfox or
Vrghr know if interested. (PS: If any artists might be interested in contributing a little sketch or interior illustration to go with the stories, let us! Also, in the past, a similar book had a music CD available to go with it. So if any musicians might be interested in creating a tune or putting something together for an addition like that, let us know too!)
Thanks for 100 Watches.

The Day The Towers Fell
General | Posted 6 years agoOn this day, eighteen years ago. The United States suffered one of the most devastating terror attacks in years, one which took the lives of 2,977 people over the course of twenty four hours and cast a long shadow over the decade to come.
I was only seven at the time and spent that Tuesday largely ignorant of what was happening until I had gotten home from school. I still remember my father shouting for us to come into the kitchen and watch the afternoon news, I was shocked when I saw footage of the second plane striking the south tower of the World Trade Center and watching the north collapse to earth, even if I was too young to fully grasp the horror of what I was seeing. It was all we talked about the rest of the day.
May the 2, 977 innocents, including the selfless individuals on Flight 93, rest in peace...
Megaplex 2019 recap
General | Posted 6 years agoWell, now that I'm back home...I think its time I talked of my experience at Megaplex over the weekend.
So two things to start off with, the first is that I managed to get a room in the main hotel for the first time, while I am grateful for what I can get and don't mind walking a block or across the street to attend a con; having the convention center be right across the carpark made for a much more laid back time there.
The second was on a bit of a short notice, but a longtime friend of mine (who I'll be referring to here as 'Blu' ) ended up joining me as well, it ended up being her first convention.
Thursday - The Journey:
The trip up went pretty smoothly for the most most part. Starting from the middle of the Keys, it was a six hour drive and I was in the navigator role for most of it, which wasn't too much of a hassle as the majority of time was spent on the many straightaways of the turnpike. There were a few storms to drive through on the way but in the end, we reached the hotel well on time.
Friday - Day 1:
I went through registration twice to start things off (once in the 'Pre-Reg' line and once in the 'At The Door Reg' line to help Blu out.) We were both pretty excited and spent most of the first bit of time just chilling out in the con space; getting a feel for the convention center's layout and simply admiring the passers by, especially the fursuiters.
I was keeping an eye out for
vixyyfox and upon spotting her, conversed for a bit before Blu and I headed off to our first panel. Being the first day, it went by fairly slowly as it usually tends to. To start, I attended the 'I Don't Know Anyone Here, Now What?" panel with Blu before we both went our own ways. I went into the Dealer's Den to see where everything and everyone was.
It was after I came out when
Onic tracked me down, and we hit it off rather well as friends within the next few hours. Save for a quick trip up to my room for lunch and a recharge, the day flew by from that point on, until Onic and I joined up with Vixyy for Foxes and Peppers Live before finally shooting the breeze with
tic-toc
Saturday - Day 2:
I spent that morning preparing with almost machine-like deliberation and soon headed down at about quarter to ten. Spent some time outside of the fourth panel room, where I ran into Vixyy again and we ended up conversing for a bit prior to the start of the Thursday Prompt panel. The panel was terrifically laid back, and I met a couple of new writers along with some familiar ones such as
Walt46 and
Chiron .
The next few hours consisted of Onic and I having a few avid conversations, with him showing a bit of his prowess on the ocarina and the both of us taking some photos of a few suiters passing through before we rejoined Blu and Vixyy for the fursuit parade, which I must admit, managed to top the one at last year's con.
There was much more flow to this day's pacing than the first, made it all exciting enough to be a joy, but not to the point of fatigue, thankfully.
I had to tear myself away some time later to meet my sister, her boyfriend and her colleague over lunch at a Japanese place not too far from the hotel. Upon returning, I went back down to the convention center to drop a donation to CARE and to watch a bit of the charity gaming tournament (after having gone back to fetch my phone and wallet, as I had forgotten them) which I intended to take part in, but it had gotten rather late, so I took my leave and retired.
Sunday - Day 3:
I woke up early on the last day - 6:30 in the morning to be precise. I'd showered the previous night so preparation was swift and before long I was out the door and waiting out front to meet the others for the grey muzzle's breakfast.
The breakfast itself was another highlight for me, the food was quite delicious and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I also met
fcneko during this time as well. Though I could have listened and conversed with Vixyy and company for hours, eventually the day wore on. Onic joined me in sitting in on the CARE presentation, which was great (probably the second time in my life I've seen a fox in person.) We stayed and talked a bit during the auction afterwards before heading to the Dealer's Den to pay Tic-Toc's booth a visit.
Once Onic had left for the rabbit fur meet and greet, I spent some more time in the Dealer's Den before deciding to head back to the hotel for a break. But before I had so much as rounded the corner to the entryway, I spotted
aikenwolf out of the corner of my eye - fursuiting as his character, Victor. Quite an unexpected surprise. So I approached, got his attention, mentioned I was a fan and asked for a photo.
When I headed back out, I went straight to the creative writing panel that evening, it wasn't as laid back and cordial as the Thursday Prompt was, but the panelist did a fine job and the tips are always useful. I ended up writing a small, impromptu story featuring a wolfess confronting its protagonist - an antisocial, miserly stag who was more than a bit misinformed. I wasn't able to finish it, but I had written enough. The truly memorable moment that comes to mind however, is that one of the other attendees in the panel was blind, but it didn't stop him from writing a tale of his own and due to the type of paper, he managed to read it aloud in braille; it was a pretty inspiring sight.
I must admit I didn't have the patience afterwards to have waited for the closing ceremonies and few of the remaining events interested me - so I decided to head to the Post Con Depression panel and pay the depressed furries a visit. Even though I never suffered much from the post con blues myself, I still found it to be a good panel to listen in on, and took away some good advice from it.
In conclusion, this was probably the best year so far in regards to a convention experience. I think a big part is simply, with this one being my third, I've gotten much more relaxed and found myself enjoying even the smallest moments more. Megaplex has almost started to feel like a second home of sorts too.
When I first decided to attend this year, I treated it as going big a bit because I was planning to sit next year out. But now, I think this experience just reinvigorated my interest in cons - so I may reconsider and be there in 2020.

General | Posted 6 years agoSo, as the title suggests. I'll be attending Megaplex this year, for the third time.
In the case of most events, I'm not sure which ones I will be attending until the schedule goes online.
I do know that I'll be attending the Thursday Prompt panel which
Vixyyfox has put together, along with any other Literature-related panels.
And I'll be attending the Greymuzzle's Breakfast again, even though at twenty five at the point, I'd hardly be one.
Aside from those, I'll just be around, so don't be afraid to walk up and say hello.

Back on track
General | Posted 6 years agoWell, the three weeks are up and there has been progress, the soreness in my right shoulder has gone down significantly, to the point that I'm off the pain pills. Got my stitches taken out as well.
Typing, while still not as effortless as it is normally, is far less awkward as a result, so I can finally toss the hiatus and get back to writing.

Three Week Hiatus
General | Posted 6 years agoHad another dislocation of the right shoulder back in March, the third in the span of seven months. The early months of 2019 have not been kind to me...
After jumping through some hoops, I finally had an arthroscopic surgery done yesterday, to help tighten up the ligaments, it has an 80% success rate so by August, it'll probably be like the dislocations never happened.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I hate to say it, but I'm going to have to go on hiatus for three weeks to recover from the surgery - I've a more limited use of my right arm at present so while I can still type, its more cumbersome and awkward. I don't know if I can manage it for long periods of time and I certainly don't want to half-arse my writing due to discomfort. so I'll be putting it down for the time being.
When the three weeks have passed, the sling will come off hopefully and I'll go through some physical therapy, during which I'll likely be able to be active again.
Worry not, I've no intention of leaving or giving up my writing, this is but a temporary setback and it too will pass.

You know, when people think of the apocalypse they like to imagine the bombastic, Hollywood style scenarios. In real life though, that kind of thing is much more subtle, hence why many people fail to grasp the cold, hard fact that we are going through a Mass Extinction presently.
Indeed, the extinction rate has, according to the report above, risen to ten to hundreds of times higher. I'll let that sink in, because I realize such is difficult to imagine.
I like to think humanity will have the will to act, at least on individual and possibly government levels, but realistically - it may be too little, too late. Especially when one takes into account the common fear of facing accountability, fear of change, or simply being comfortable with walking right into our own demise. But I'm open to being proven wrong.
Apologies for my rant, thank you.
