MFF pics?
Posted 9 years agoDespite having several pictures taken of me while in suit, I can't find a single one. :( When I do a generalized search, I find pictures of others I had seen there. Could it perhaps just be that no one used any tags? If anyone finds any, please let me know.
(It was high time I got that old journal off there, anyway. XD)

No Pokemon for me. :(
Posted 9 years agoSo yeah, Pokemon Go. I just have a simple cheapy-cheap phone, so it's not available on my phone. I was, however, able to get it on my iPod. Of course, this has the draw back of only being able to connect to Wi-Fi, so I'm basically limited to my house. I live in a fairly rural area, so there's not much around. It's a ten minute drive to town--not far, I know, but there's nothing between my house and town except farms. I don't get the convenience that city (or even town) people do.
I had a friend over yesterday to play games. Before we started, he wanted to check for Pokemon. He found one, right in the game room! Excited, I pulled up Pokemon Go, but nothing is there, even though we're sitting about two feet part.. I see silhouettes for Pokemon, they've all got three footprints, which means they're far away. Then, about 30 seconds later, he catches another one! I check my game again, but still nothing. I see posts of other people catching Pokemon in their house, but I can't even get that, apparently. Whhyyy? :( I don't understand. Is there perhaps some setting I need to change?

Well, I've found a new favorite history person.
Posted 10 years agoThe story of how it came about is actually kind of amusing. There's a museum I've known about for a while and really want to see called the Mutter Museum. It contains a myriad of... well I guess I'll call it medical curiosities. Deformed skulls and skeletons, models of diseases and pathologies and anatomy, old medical tools and all sorts of cool and weird and macabre things. Knowing I wouldn't be getting to Philadelphia any time soon, I'd been looking for books on the museum to get some info and pictures. I found one called "Dr. Mutter's Marvels" that sounded good and got good reviews. Turns out, it was about Dr. Thomas Mutter himself.
I liked him from the start, and my admiration for him only grew as I kept reading. He was a surgeon during the 1840s and 50s and a teacher at the Jefferson Medical college, with a charming and flamboyant personality. He was very good at what he did and quite ahead of his time.
During a time when it was still unknown how diseases were transmitted, he practiced a (then unusual) amount of cleanliness, both personal and during surgery, which, needless to say, was very beneficial to the patients. Other doctors at the time simply went from one patient to the next, with no cleaning in between, blithely (if unknowingly) spreading disease. One doctor even said that there was just no way the doctors were the cause. Why? Because they were the doctors. Such was the stagnant thinking of the time. But not Mutter.
He took care of his patients, seeing them as people and not just cases. Beforehand he would talk with them, telling them every step of the procedure and what they could expect, and afterwords would tell them how to tend their wounds and even check up on them later to be sure they were doing well, and help them if they weren't. By contrast, it was the norm for other doctors to bring in their patients with nary a word, do their work, and immediately send them back home--which Mutter found quite cruel. After suffering through surgery (with no anesthesia, remember), and then to be carted away in a bumpy, rocking carriage.
He delighted in working on people whom others thought had no hope, namely those who the medical world at the time merely deemed "monsters" due to deformities or abnormalities. Most notably was that of burn patients, mostly women whose dresses had caught on fire and whose faces were disfigured from the burns and melting skin. Many of them could no longer turn their heads or close their mouths or even blink properly. He even devised a new medical procedure to help them.
But neither was he reckless. There were some instances, such as with breast cancer (which was often in an advanced state when the woman would seek out help due to the modesty of the time) where he would not operate, knowing that doing so would only cause undue pain and agony with no improved quality of life.
When ether anesthesia came about, he championed its use despite other doctors--and even patients--wariness of it, knowing how useful it would be in "reducing human pain and suffering," as was the physician's motto at the time.
I had more, but I've forgotten now, and I've blathered on enough. XD
SO yeah. Thomas Mutter. *thumbs up* ^_^

Okay, fine.
Posted 10 years agoI've seen so mant people posting this, I can't help but do it, too. I always enjoy these memes anyway, for some reason.

Relationship status: Single
Myers/Briggs type: I don't remember, but definitely introverted.
Hogwarts house: Ravenclaw.
Routine
"Early Bird" or "Night Owl": Somewhat night owl. I have to maintain a regular schedule due to work, but even so I usually never go to bed before midnight.
First thought in the morning: Usually some random song that's in my head. Today it was the theme song from Princess Mononoke, despite not having seen the movie or heard the song in a long time. >_>
Last thought before falling asleep at night: Often I think of my stories, but there's nothing very standard. Could be daydreaming, could be thinking of something I saw online or a conversation I had. My mind is all over the place at night.
School/Work
Do you work or are you a student: Work. Just regular grunt work. A cashier at a grocery store. :/
What do you do well: Video games? XD I think I'm a fairly competent writer as well.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years: We have a tendency to move a lot, so who knows?
Habits (Do you…?)
Drink: Nein. It tastes terrible, and I hate effects and how it changes people.
Smoke: Nein. It's expensive, pointless and detrimental.
Do Drugs: Nein. I see no purpose.
Have a go-to comfort food: I dunno, cake, cookies, pastries and baked foods in general I suppose.
Have a nervous habit: Hmm, maybe just general fidgeting? I don't get nervous too often.
What is your favorite…?
Physical quality (in yourself): I don't know, my hair I guess? It's gotten rather pretty now that its long.
In Others: I tend to sequester myself away from people so I'm not around them much. I dunno, I guess as long as their not a prick or a douche I'm fine.
Mental/emotional quality (in yourself): I'm steadfast and don't get upset by things easily.
Food: Lots! Cheese, caramel, marshmallows, shrimp and shrimp dishes, sushi and Japanese, pizza, any kind of potatoes except mashed, cookies and other pastries and...
Drink: Milk.
Animal: Dragons, dragonflies, cats, penguins, cephalopods, stingrays, lots of others in general.
Colors: Blues and teal/turquoise.
Artist/Band/Group: Erm, I don't really listen to contemporary music. Lots of soundtracks, mostly video game and movies with some anime. I'm also fond of old music from the 30s, 40s and 50s (and of course the 80s from whence I grew up) as well as cultural music.
TV show: Don't watch any. Oh wait, Face Off is pretty much the only thing I watch.
Video game: Hmm, right now Bloodborne and Dishonored, but with nearly 500 games, it's hard to pin any down, and even the list of general favorites would be long!

Posted 10 years agoThe power of words - writing experiment
Posted 10 years agoI want to try a writing exercise, and I'd like you guys to help me. I want to see how good my power of description is, so I'm going to describe a thing as if I were putting it in a story, and if I'm dong my job right, you should get a nice mental image. Then I'm going to post a picture of the thing I described, and I want you to see how close your mental image provided by me is to the real thing. And no peeking! That defeats the purpose and won't do me any good. Okay? Here goes...
"The creature was mostly humanoid in shape, but mutated and bone thin, walking hunched over on all fours, it's arms and legs long and lanky. Its hands and feet were equally long and lanky, tipped with formidable claws. Its skin was dark, as if charred, barely clinging to its bones and in some places falling off all together, hanging like ribbons. Its face was almost human, but skull-like with long fangs, and a large swath of skin hung from its head and neck like a fleshy cloak.
It moved forward slowly, as if stalking. Even when on all fours it was a good six or seven feet tall. It would then lash out blindingly fast with the claws on its hands. But on occasion when it would rear up and attack, trying to grab with the flesh on its neck, it was easily a frightening ten feet."
Okay keep that image in your mind, here are a couple pictures:

And if you want to see it in action, here's a video:

Soooo... how does my description compare?

Tornadoes
Posted 10 years agoI hate them. I'm not afraid of much in life, but tornadoes are one of them. We just had a crazy storm pass through with multiple tornado warnings for the last hour and some. Bad enough that we were preparing and taking things into the basement. I'm still not even sure it's entirely over. I don't know how to calm down.
Illustrating WWI
Posted 11 years agoMy best friend and History Furs co-founder Jennifer (raijen_mule) is trying to make a trip to France in order to study WWI and make an illustration book. (Consider me jealous!) Obviously, this is an expensive endeavor, and so she has setup a GoFundMe for help. She explains everything in detail there: http://www.gofundme.com/jm03ko
This is an exciting prospect and thought fellow history fans would find this enticing as well and would perhaps help out, or at the very least, spread the word. I've already donated! :3

I need words!
Posted 11 years agoI've wrote a few instant stories a little while ago, and quite enjoyed doing them. It's a nice little thing to do when I'm stuck on a full-length story.
For those that don't know, I like to play a little game with myself to test out my writing ability. I take a word--any random word--and make a short story of it. Thing is, I don't think about it. I instantly start writing, whatever comes to my head. I fly by the seat of my pants as I'm writing. I never know where the story will go. It's usually quite short, about 300 to 500 words or so and only takes a few minutes to write. That's why I call it an instant story.
Something like this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/13873750/
Or this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14043511/
But I need words to do it! Give me some words, and I'll do some writing!

Blargle
Posted 11 years agoNothing of note. Just wanted to get that big long journal out of the way that had been up for like half a year.
I can make some comments about video games or my aquarium if anyone really cares to read anything of worth.
But I doubt any of you are following me for that.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure why any of you are following me. XD

FA meme
Posted 12 years agoBecause we all know my weakness for these things. XD Take from
windfalcon_art
1. Why did you join FurAffinity?
Because my best friend made me. No, seriously! She came up to me one day and was like, "Bwahahaha! I made you an account on FA!" This is why name is not capitalized, and it still bugs me to this day. >.<
2. What does your username have to do with you?
Welp, back in high school, I met a friend who got me into anime. We were watching some Sailor Moon, and she said I reminded her of Haruka in appearance. She looked like Setsuna, so we took up those names as our pseudonyms when writing letters to each other. Then Fushigi Yugi came along, and she said that I was a lot like Yui, both in looks and personality, so then I took up the name "Haruka-Yui." One day she smushed the two names together to form "Harui," and I loved it, and it's been my pseudonym ever since!
3. What is your current avatar of?
My character dressed in Edwardian clothes, because that's one of my favorite time periods. :3
4. How many watchers do you have, and how many do you watch?
Watched by 278 (though Odin knows why :/) and watching 181.
5. Do you have more than one account?
Yes, I run the history_furs page, as well as a separate page for my (meager) art, to separate it from art I've commissioned.
6. Name 3 of your favorite artists on FA.
Well, my best friend raijenmule of course, as well as wolf-nymph and firefeathers.
7. What artist do you admire because of their personality?
Hmmm... aside from my best friend, I don't really interact with any artists on a personal level. No wait, I take that back. I've chatted with firefeathers at cons a few times, and have commissioned her fairly often, and she's pretty easy to talk to and a fair bit silly. But in a good way. :3
But, pretty much any of the artists I've conversed with, even if it's just a small chat for comissioning, have been pretty easy going.
8. Do you comment, fave, or both?
Both, but not always in conjunction. More often than not when I'm commenting, it's because of the content of the picture, and not the artistry of it. When I favorite, it's the opposite. XD
9. What do you typically post on FA?
Well, since this is my character account, anything I get commissioned of my character. :P Historical things go to historyfurs, and mostly consist of pictures from museums and such, as well as historical articles.
10.What's your favorite submission in your gallery?
None of the art is mine, so I don't really have any one favorite.
11. What are the things you wish you could draw better?
Everything. :/ But, I'm not much of an artist to begin with. I'm more of a doodler/hobbyist type. Still, I think it would be nice to be able to take the ideas in my head and flesh them out, so to speak. I know all that I would need to get better would be to practice but--
I still need to better gear so I can kill Garrosh!
and
Oh wow, I just realized I haven't finished that DLC in Skyrim!
and
Man, I just want to do some sniping!
and
All I need to do is beat Dead Space 2 in Hard Core mode, and I'll have my Platinum!
--I'm easily distracted by video games. I have so little self discipline. >_>
12. How many hours a day do you spend on FA?
Less than one, I'd say. I typically just hop on after work to check messages and submissions.
13. Are you a fast, slow, or medium typer?
Fairly fast. I can do about 90 wpm.
14. What is the most annoying thing people ask you?
No one really knows I exist here, so people don't really ask me anything. In real life on the other hand...
15. What is the most annoying/offending comment you've received?
Again, I'm not popular or known, so receiving any comments at all are pretty far and few between. XD Though I do seem to have a shadow of a memory about something that irritated me, but it must not have been too bothersome if I cannot remember.
16. What/who inspires you?
Uuhhh, just about anything, really. I'll see something odd--or see something regular, but from a different perspective--and think, "I wonder...?" And it will spawn a whole slew of thoughts and ideas.
17. Everyone has considered leaving FA once or twice. Have you? Why?
Not true. I've never considered leaving. I hear there's lots of drama and unfairness, but none of it has anything to do with me.

Posted 12 years agoI love these things, I don't know why. Maybe because it's sort of like a personality quiz.
1. First thing you wash in the shower?
Hair
2. Are you more of a coffee or alcohol drinker?
Neither. I drink milk, lol.
3. Would you kiss the last person you kissed again?
Never kissed anyone so... I guess that's a no? XD
4. Do you plan outfits?
No.
5. How are you feeling RIGHT now?
Normal. Same as always.
6. Whats the closest thing to you that's red?
My miniature samurai armor.
7. What would you do if you opened your door and saw a dead body?
Be thoroughly confused, then wonder what the hell to do with it.
8. Tell me about the last dream you remember having?
I've only been remembering fragments lately, and the majority from last night are already gone.
9. Three of your current feelings?
Calm. Fine. Normal.
10. What are you craving right now?
Nothing, really. Wait, the desert. I want to be back in the desert.
11. Turn ons?
Armor. :P And intelligence.
12. Turn offs?
Uncleanliness, lack of personal hygiene, immorality, stupidity. General douchebaggery.
13. What comes to mind when I say cabbage?
Uhh, cabbage. :/ What else? XD
When was the last time you cried?
Feck if I know. It's a rarity for me.
15. If you could be a superhero, who would you want to be?
Hmmmm... On a basic level, probably someone who could fly. Or maybe teleport. That would make things so much more simple. Other than that it would take a lot more thought.
16. Did the one person who hurt you most in your life apologize?
No.
17. Do you bite into your ice cream or just lick it?
Lick it. Wouldn't biting it hurt your teeth?
18. Favorite movie ever?
Oh gosh, I don't know. I have too many favorites to pick just one.
19. Do you like yourself?
Pretty much, yeah.
20. Have you ever met a celebrity?
Nein.
21. Could you handle being in the military?
Lol, indeed. I was in the Army for eight years.
22. What are you listening to right now?
The trickle of my freshwater fish tank, and the hum of my saltwater tank's powerhead, as well as the sounds of my computer running.
23. How many countries have you visited?
Germany, Kuwait, Iraq, Korea, Vietnam, so 5. Six if you count the fact I've been many places around the US, even though I live here. Also made a pitstop in Ireland, but I don't really count that.
24. Are your parents strict?
In certain aspects they were when growing up, but since we're all adults now, not so much.
25. Would you go sky diving?
Sure.
26. Would you go out to eat with George W. Bush?
Not likely. I have no interest in politics. Unless we got to go somewhere with phenomenal food, then yeah.
27. Whats on your mind right now?
Doing this meme, then finishing my tasks in Animal Crossing.
28. Is there anything you want to say to someone?
Not really, no.
29. Have you ever been in a castle?
Yes, a few.
30. Do you rent movies often?
No, because I buy them.
31. Whats your zodiac sign?
Eastern: boar, western: Capricorn
32. When was the last time you had sex?
Never. :(
33. Name five facts about yourself.
I'm short. I've a Scandinavian heritage. I'm an unstereotypical female. I love video games and history the most. And... um... I'm blond.
34. Ever had a near death experience? If so, what happened?
No.
35. Do you believe in karma or pre-destiny?
No.
36. Brown or white eggs?
Either...
37. Do you own something from Hot Topic?
Hmmm... yeah, a few Transformers shirts and a Ninja Turtles shirt. Maybe a couple video game shirts, too. All geeky stuff. :P
38. Ever been on a train?
Hmm, once, while on our way out to the Grand Canyon. We got "hijacked" by some bandits, hehe.
39. Ever been in love?
Not sure. Not really, I don't think, though there have been a few guys that I was very fond of.
40. If you were paid 1 million dollars to spend the night in a supposed haunted house, would you do it?
Lol, yeah. I'd do it even without the money.
41. If you could trade places with any person living or dead, who would you trade places with?
Shoo, that's a tough one! Probably someone from the Victorian or Edwardian periods. Maybe even ancient Egypt. I dunno, I'd have to give it some serious thought, because there are so many periods in history I like. Unless I can trade back and forth, lol!
42. If you could shorten your life expectancy by 10 years to become more attractive, would you do it?
No. I care not for appearances.
43. Whom do you admire and why?
Uhhh...
44. What was your favorite bedtime story as a child?
We didn't really have bedtimes stories, but we did have lots of books. I really enjoyed the Berenstein Bears, and I remember reading James and the Giant Peach, The Secret of Nymh, and the Ralph S. Mouse books. OH WAIT! I lied. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was my favorite. (The original book, that is, not that crap-ass movie they made off of it.)
45. You’re walking down the street, you come across a burning building. A woman says her baby is trapped inside, what would you do?
I've always wondered how the hell someone can leave their baby in a burning building? Shouldn't that be the first thing you go for? As for what I'd do... probably nothing. Sounds callous, but I have no pity for people who bring things upon themselves, and neither am I very selfless, especially to strangers.
46. If you could choose the future profession of your son or daughter, would you?
Probably not.
47. What was your best experience on drugs or alcohol?
I neither drink nor do drugs, so not applicable.
48. What was your worst experience on drugs or alcohol?
Again, N/A.
50. As your walking down the street you find a suitcase full of money sitting next to a parked car, would you take it?
If it's just sitting on the ground, how do I know it's full of money? But either way, if it's right next to a car, not likely.
51. If you found that a close friend has AIDS, would you still hang out with them?
Yeah. What does AIDS have to do with it? In fact, I'd probably try to spend more time with them, since I now know their time is limited.
52. In front of you are 10 pistols, 5 of which are loaded. If you survive you’d receive 100 million dollars. Would you be willing to place 1 to your head and pull the trigger?
Possibly. It's easy to tell a loaded gun from an unloaded one due to weight.
53. How old were you when you lost your virginity?
I haven't lost it yet. :/
54. Do you believe in ghosts, werewolves or vampires?
No.
55. If you could live forever, would you want to?
Maaayyybeee...? I think I would like to from a historical standpoint, in that I could see how things change over time, but I'm not so sure about forever. I think a time limit would be more convincing, like a thousand years or so.
56. Which fictional movie character most resembles who you are?
Uhhhh.... None that I can really think of.
57. If you could go back in time, which time period would you visit?
This again! Well, I like feudal Japan, ancient Egypt, Victorian and Edwardian and the Viking Age, so that's where I'd go. If I had to choose one... Well it's a toss up between Egypt and Edwardian, but I'm kind of leaning more towards Egypt, as we know less about it.
58. If they were to televise a live execution, would you watch it?
Well, considering that executions these days are little more than lethal injections, I don't see why not. Unless we're talking about executions from a different country, that's a different story. But even so, I likely wouldn't, because I rarely watch TV any way.
59. If you could be the president of the USA, would you be willing to do it?
No. I am so disinterested in politics, I wouldn't have the slightest idea of what I was doing.
60. If you could choose the sex of your unborn child, would you want to?
No.
61. Would you rather live longer or be wealthy?
If I could live longer and still be in good health, then yes, for the reasons stated above of wanting to see how things change through time. Otherwise if I'm so horridly old I'm bedridden, what's the point?

A meme about YOU!
Posted 12 years agoJust leave a comment, and I'll fill this information out about you. This might be difficult given I don't know most of you too well, but I'll give it a shot. :3
1) Tell you something I learned about you by looking at your FA page for 10 seconds.
2) Tell you a color you remind me of.
3) Tell you my first memory of you.
4) Ask you a question.
5) Tell you something I like about you.
6) Tell you the object that is in front of me.
7) Dare you to do this yourself in your own journal!

Victorian artists?
Posted 13 years agoThe art dump is finally done! Aren't you glad I stretched it out over several days? XD
Anyway, I"ve been in a Victorian mood/mindset lately, and feel like getting some Victorian-themed art. Does anyone know of any artists who do, or would be good at, Victorian or steampunk style art? (I'm not a fan of steampunk, but it is inspired by Victorian and, unfortunately, associated with it.)

Changes! (Updated)
Posted 13 years agoI've decided to post all the art/photos/stories/etc done by me on a separate site, and keep this one only for art OF Harui. So, for anyone watching me for what I create (if any XD), it will now be posted to
harui_arts. That also means that any art/photos/stories/etc done by me will be removed from this page, and moved over there, for all of the four people who may have favorited anything. XD
Everything has been moved! However, I think I'll leave my gallery in tact for a week or so, then start taking things down.
This also means that I will be uploading a lot of the art I've had commissioned, so expect an art dump soon!

New Fursona?
Posted 13 years agoSo I've been thinking of making a new fursona, so that I can wear my historical dresses to cons but still be relevant. :P I'd like an animal with a small, short or no tail so that I may wear my dresses and not worry about a large, garish or *gasp!* non-historical belt. I'd likely go with this dress as it's my favorite so far, and would make the suit cheaper for me, as I'd only need a head, paws and (possibly) a tail. And maybe she could be
History_Furs unofficial mascot. :3
So, any suggestions?

Looking for artists
Posted 13 years agoAnyone know of any detail-oriented artists who would be willing to draw historically accurate samurai for me?
