General | Posted 2 years agoThings were pretty light this month!
A followup to Halfling Lord on a Cockatrice from Alchemist Models, the same figure is offered by Grimskald except here, he's a General! The halfling, not the cockatrice. Even though it's a repeat, I thought it was worth including because of the paint jobs the new version shows off. Flashy! (It's also popping up in other places, too: IcarusUndone, for one. Seems like everyone's jumping onto the cockatrice steed bandwagon this month.)
And that's about it for visuals! Like I said, not much activity except for repeats (the same old reviews for the Razer Basilisk gaming mouse, which I bought for teaching online during 2020; and the self-healing concrete company trying to raise funds.)
An amateur natural historian/mythologist/paleontologist on BitChute, Dardanus of Troy, spends a lot of time talking about how "silly" the chicken with snake tail version is. Basilisks were dinosaurs all along! (I think that's the point of Monster Hunter?) The guy also feels it just doesn't make sense to have four legs and wings. Yeah...I guess. Killjoy.
Have a listen to Celluloid Cockatrice by Kueik. Reminds me of something you'd play in a high-stakes "rush to get to a goal" stage of a video game more than Alternative Rock but what do I know.
A podcast (BOMcast) about more Bible shenanigans in Isaiah: listen to it here specifically for the song, which begins around 11 minutes in. More musical numbers follow.
You'd think with so little media to go through this month I would have written more. A lot's been happening in the last few months...been keeping me busy.

General | Posted 2 years agoLeftovers from last time: a review of Basements n' Basilisks which came up in last month's report.
Hard rocking, epic anthem The Basilisk from The Mid Six. At least, that's what I'd say if they paid me as a staff social media influencer! But I'll give them a freebie due to the subject matter.
Speaking of free, who wants to color inside the lines? Here are some Cockatrice Coloring Pages for your inner cub, whelp, fledging, you name it. This one in particular has an expression that makes me laugh...don't ask me why there seem to be a picture number 7, 8, 9 and 11, but nothing else. Maybe the other pictures were just too awesome for children.
Usually the title "Halfling Lord on Cockatrice" brings up amateur Bad Dragon dildo porn, but this time it's a neat little 3d model from Alchemist Models. Charge!
I misread the title of this figure from Glaer of Doom as "glare of doom". Easy mistake, right? The dinky extra wings are an interesting touch.
A super-dinky but colorful figurine from FigurePhenatix.
A little less colorful fellow from Warp Miniatures, who I've featured before.
And the fairly morbid collected skeleton which also has shown up in prior reports...not sure when, though. When you're a skeleton, the months just fly by...
A few things on Etsy that caught my attention, including adorable baby pictures--look at that dinky comb! There's also this ring, and these miniatures--I really dig the guy on the left with the staff, there--and an acid-etched mirror. If anyone wants to get me a present for the end of the semester, coming up in about a month...have at it!

General | Posted 3 years agoProbably done a variation on this one before. I'm positive conversations like this have happened before.
M comes in from getting a beer from the "out-back" fridge.
A: <Urrp> (medium volume belch)
M: <BlurHUUuurrrrrUP!> (exaggerated with extra vocalization)
A: You say the sweetest things.
M: It's because you're a lovely man.
M hugs A with one arm, sort of from the side, and rubs his chin on A's shoulder.
M: Rather, you're a "handsome" man, not "lovely".
A: I'll take "lovely".
Later that day
A Geico commercial where the gecko tastes wings plays on the TV.
M: If he fell into the fryer he'd probably be indistinguishable from those wings! Ha ha ha!
The gecko coughs from the spiciness of the wings.
M: I don't think reptiles can taste capsaicin. I know birds can't, and I'll bet he couldn't taste it either. He wouldn't be bothered by it at all.
M huffs.
M: This commercial isn't scientifically accurate.
A: It's a talking lizard selling car insurance? And THAT's what you're concerned about?
M shrugs and wanders off.

General | Posted 3 years ago"HydraDX (and its sister project Basilisk) are cross-chain liquidity protocols designed to enable frictionless liquidity for crypto assets across various chains. In contrast to most decentralised exchanges that rely on separate pools for separate assets, HydraDX’s solution enables deposits of ‘all’ assets into one shared liquidity pool, the ‘Omnipool’, unlocking unparalleled efficiencies."
That's a mouthful. But I wouldn't mind an Omnipool. Sounds swanky! :>
If I ever wanted to leave my stamp on things, this rubber stamp from SniggleSloth would do just the trick. I think I remember trying to carve things like that in art classes but mine always turned out hideous.
Another podcast, coming from the Witcher-based lore.
And more Witcher universe takes: Interviews with effects artists for the Netflix series. I might go look for clips later.
For beginning adventurers, there's Caves of the Cockatrice. It says it's appropriate for level 1 adventurers. Level 1?!?! That's enough to survive a cockatrice with the means to set himself up in a cave, for goodness sakes? Sometimes I just want to stare at the world. Though I have to admit..."Caves of the Cockatrice" could be a great title for a much more...intimate and interesting adventure, if you know what I mean. Heh heh heh...Bueno.
And just spotted on Steam: Basements N' Basilisks. I've heard it has a good story, and lots of rolling of dice. Does it have basilisks? Well, you can kind of see one in the cover art! That counts, right? Right?
Started in the middle of the month: Item #3, the Basilisk beer! Part of a mythological brews series. Though they discuss some of the older myths...roosters, toads, all of that. :> But their overall discussion is more suited to hunting and killing them, which...I suppose is more the Witcher point of view.
Image of the can if you're in that part of the world.
Episodes of a manga have featured basilisk and cockatrice prepared in various nutritious ways; lucky diners in Japan can see how they'd like them...or as close as we might be able to get.

General | Posted 3 years agoFirst one of the year!
Cockatrice Statue downloadable and printable files from World of STL. Really nice set of streaming tailfeathers coming from near the base of the serpent tail, mean-looking face. I'm an admirer!
Slightly less extravagant model with bat wings from LokRedsock. Hard to make out the tail on this one, but the beak looks ready for pecking!
A really nicely plumed fellow by The Dragon Trappers Lodge. I admire the feathers surrounding the tail!
Some figures from Auggie's Game Store, a cockatrice sitting up and gesturing and another (somewhat blurry picture) with a title suggesting there are giants involved.
A short mention in a list of Dangerous Magical Creatures from the Wizarding World of Hairy Poofer that I enjoy not because I'm all in on the serpent version (I do have an alt like that on some MUCK's) but for the nod to the correct mythology. Awesome, Collider contributor Kutschker!
Speed paint of a cockatrice character by Jaiseea. Neat to watch someone at work!
"Good intentions from a scientist award" goes to Professor Gregory who is using mythological names to label COVID variants. I don't speak for the mythological community, but...while I'm all for exposure, this isn't what I would have had in mind.
This is more of what I was thinking: The Eye of Cockatrice by Harry Escott. (YouTube link if you don't have Spotify.)
Possibly even more exciting: a Show on Netflix! entitled Shahmaran which promises to have half serpent, half human beings in it. I've mentioned the Shamaran before in these journals, here's the Wikipedia article about the myth.
And last, a close-up of one of the Minton plates I'd enjoy collecting if I had a place to put them. Enjoy your next meal, knowing if you scoop away the last bit of pie and uncover his eyes, you're done for! Ha ha ha bah bawwwk!

December BasilCockWatch 2022--end of the year
General | Posted 3 years agoSorry this is a little late (like anyone was breathlessly waiting for it to show up). I got back from a vacation and didn't have what I needed to get it posted in a timely manner!
Without further ado:
Starting out the last update of 2022 with another 3D print from Helios3DPrinting. Lots of little spikey parts! Would those break off?
Very tiny cockatrice hen from Qonya Quick. Cute smile, like she knows something!
Livery/heraldic artwork from Tumblr, which I don't normally share links from--figuring out who originally uploaded this pheasant cockatrice (as well as a kestrel gryphon) wasn't hard but I couldn't find it on their shop orweb gallery. They do have an interesting "Camp Mustelid", might have to go see what that's about!
In the gaming world, there is a lot of talk abouthow to find basilisk eggs. I could give them a few hints. I could also give them a few! But they'd have to promise it was for a good cause.
A few videos:
Basilisk Venom, a new single from a...death metal? Scream metal? I'm not up on those terms. Anyway, the band is Complexant and you can hear them for yourselves.
Cockatrice from Valkyrie Profile. The poor guy didn't even get to do a single attack...has a sort of gryphon-ish look to him. According to the story, you only need one of his feathers. I'm sure you could just, you know, like...ask him for one? No need to create flashing auras around your swords and tornados and such.
A reference to Roko's Basilisk on CSI, which seems like an unlikely place to delve into such things. I might skip it.
And in other media: Sweet Tea and D&D episode 67. This is the version where being pecked or scratched is how petrification starts; you get two saving throws, and petrification only lasts 24 hours. So in other words, the nerf cockatrice. Some discussions of how to incorporate this into RP scenarios about 11 minutes into things, and then the crew move on to other topics. They may have covered YOUR favorite mythical creature in earlier episodes!

Twitter and algorithms
General | Posted 3 years agoI broke down and created a Twitter account about three months ago (Sept. 17 to be exact!) because of an artist who put things there that I desperately wanted to see.
The account has two tweets (one of the "math is hard" meme I uploaded here, one of new audio I added to a show) and a few retweets (art from people who drew things for me and announced it there)--about five messages total. Less than 15 likes and they're mostly furry sketches leaning on the gay side of things.
After analyzing this behavior, who does Twitter serve up to me as potentially interesting accounts to watch?
Tudor Dixon the failed GOP candidate for governor of Michigan.
Kari Lake War Room the group for people who can't grasp that Lake, the failed GOP candidate for governor of Arizona, could lose, and support her attempts to overturn the election by canceling votes of people in my county...meaning my vote. She wants to cancel my vote. Screw her.
Rep. Lauren Boebert, need I say more.
RSBN, Right Side Broadcasting Network.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green. This one's even weirder.
Greg Kelly, Newsmax anchor.
Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida.
Matt Gaetz. "Florida man, Firebrand, American"
NewsMax with real news for real people. Really?
This is just in the first 15 or so. Scrolling down, about half of the recommendations are GOP senators, representatives, governors or governor candidates, anchors from conservative news stations, conservative news stations, and the like. Once I get down to the 30th or 40th recommendation I start seeing things I might actually care about, like knitting groups, groups on how to self-publish or connect with editors, more furry artists...
Who on earth designed this algorithm? It looks like all it's doing is pushing up to the front the type of person who cries the loudest about being silenced.
"Hmmm, next up we have a huge middle-age queer who likes anthro wolves and gryphons and seems to be into some rather...exotic fetishes. What might he enjoy reading about? I know, let's hook him up with Josh Hawley and Dinesh D'Souza!" (They were both in the 20's when it came to recommendations.)

General | Posted 3 years agoSelf-healing concrete making the news again; "Basilisk, Acciona Infraestructureas". The page makes it sound like as big of a scam as BSX cryptocurrency. <--EDIT: It might be a scam! The page won't load for some folks, and when I try to visit now it trips up some of my virus scanning software.
Trials through history including the trial of a rooster, for you-know-what!
Good Mythical Morning has a tree ornament for sale just in time for Christmas. <----EDIT: Or not! They're gone from the site. We were warned it was a limited edition!
Badass design on Newgrounds by The4CatsOTA. I normally wouldn't link to other art sites but I liked it. If I get a tattoo at any point...
Witch Doctor design from WateHmeloan on Reddit. Another site I don't visit often or report hits from but...he's neat. Juvenile form is cute too!
I'll admit I was excited about seeing the title Clockwork Basilisk but it's just about revolvers. Although...I kind of get the gist of what they were after with that name. (I'm not above naming characters after firearms, either.)
Deep Dive-The Cockatrice by Dump Stat Adventures, a blog about running RPG's. They spend a lot of time discussing the game versions but do a decent job bringing up some of the older myths...just what I'd expect from a deep dive.
An unexpected appearance at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade deserves an honorable mention. It's being called a Turkey Dragon and has apparently been in the parade at least a couple of years, but this is the first time I saw it. Turkeylisk!
Looks like he's gonna chow down on a block or two.
A certain badger's birthday is coming up on Saturday--if you know

General | Posted 3 years agoThe 3d printable designers out there didn't let me down this month.
Tagged as both a basilisk and a cockatrice (I get it, I really do) from KLTStudio. Has a few chicken buddies to run with if you look closely at the feet!
A bit more confusingly titled as "Huge Chicken Lizard Hybrid / Bird Bat Beast", this is from Epic-Miniatures. Standing on part of a tree branch or log, looking angry! The designer has a Patreon too if you are looking for more miniatures.
A fellow who either has a strange paint job or...other issues, from Wizkids/Paizo Publishing. That mouth...
This is more for 3d modeling in a digital environment like a game than for printing: made by KRAQSS.
A nice model available for printing on demand, then shipped to you! C27 Studio is one of many creators whose work can be purchased from TableTopXtra.
If you're near Sacramento, there's an event that the zoo that might be interesting. I spotted an article and went to the zoo's site and found more details but unfortunately no pictures of the "deadly gazes of the basilisk and the cockatrice." Well, maybe that's for the best! I suppose there might be some general interest in the dragons, too, for whatever reason.
More research for scholars of antiquity and the scriptures:
Oh woe is me there's a weasel on me from A Newcomer's Guide to Bestiaries. Medieval artwork in all its splendor.
Simple hits on a search engine for the King James version. Isaiah had a lot to say about cockatrices; I think Jeremiah started to pick up the torch but got distracted. Maybe being thrown in the well of mud as a step too far?
Interesting Creatures List probably compiled by someone who wishes they could relive the glory days of Sunday School. I feel ripped off about the clip art they used for the most interesting entry, and the fact that it's only at number 5? Hmmph.
10 Oldest Monster Myths puts basilisks at number 4, and it comes with an instructional video! Sounds like they put in the time for their research. I hope the other entries are as detailed but I'll let experts on those myths take over on checking for me.
Financial world news...sort of. I can't help but watch updates on Kraken and one of its assets: Basilisk (BSX) – Basilisk is “a Kusama-based liquidity protocol parachain that enables participants to trade any two cryptocurrencies.” Basilisk is “a cross-chain protocol, allowing it to communicate with other networks like Ethereum, Bitcoin and Polkadot.” So...give us your money?
BSX was $0.000036 as of Monday, Oct 17. Less than a cent of a cent...today (Nov. 1) it's reported at $.0001261 which honestly...is a lot of growth! If you had money invested in it.

M: If Proposition 130 passes, we should--I'm halfway serious, here--if it passes, we should purchase a big property, have some of our friends move in with us, and somehow start a religion. Or, have a widow or widower move in and make them the owner, on paper.
A: All of our friends?
M: If it's a big place, maybe. I said I was only halfway serious.
(A doesn't look enthusiastic, but goes back to drawing.)
M: I wonder how many people you actually need to have involved to be considered a religion in the eyes of the state?
A: Probably not that many.
M: Call ourselves...the Anthro Association? A furry pun?
A: Nah. The Taints. The Church of the Saturday Taints.
(M laughs)
M: "Latter Day...Saturday". That's hilarious!
A: You can use it.

General | Posted 3 years agoArtwork from a site named Society6, which might be new? I haven't run across it before. In any case, this looks like it's an illustration from a book, UNDERLINE Field Guide to Dragons UNDERLINE drawn by BambiKhan. Handwritten notes promote the theory that cockatrices hatch from a rooster's egg after being incubated by a snake; basilisks from the "reverse upbringing".
I like that more than the incredibly unflattering account found in Pathfinder. "Stupid, vicious, and repulsive" it begins. "Today's cockatrices breed true in terrifying and filthy dens haphazardly excavated by as many as a dozen of the squawking creatures." Are they trying to call us Hippies?
More about basilisks from games: How to Tame a Basilisk. As it turns out...you can bribe them with eggs. Who would have guessed that, eh?
I've posted links to a plate here and a teapot there, but it looks like someone is selling the whole Mintons Cockatrice shebang. "Designed in 1951" it has 5 dinner plates, 12 smaller luncheon plates, 9 tea cups...the list goes on. I hope it ends up either being very gently used, or put on display somewhere.
A few 3D printables:
Roberts5 offers this "Chicken Lizard Hybrid" (we know what it is, Robby).
In the act of swooping down in a sort of action pose with a plank that could stand to be a bit more transparent propping the poor guy up by his taint. Oof.
Some religious writings:
A brief overview of some mythological mentions with Part 3 of "Monsters in the Bible". Being in the Bible must be worth SOME kind of street cred among mythological beings. It's gotta be.
And a much more thorough collection of writings on Isaiah chapter 11; I guess it's like one of those "survey papers". Where oh where is my den, that you want to put your hand upon it?
A movie, The Basilisks, that I've heard of before but have not watched yet, can be streamed on Amazon apparently.
And included this one only because I couldn't resist the headline: The Razer Basilisk V3 Pro Has a Bad Batch of Dongles. The article is on Medium, which limits the number of articles you can read there every few weeks. Essentially:
"I was all ready to rush out and buy one to review — but then I saw many reports of issues flood the internet. It seems that a significant percentage of the launch shipments come with a USB dongle that either works intermittently or stops working after a few seconds and never comes back online."
There's a Razor Basilisk a few feet from me now, and its dongle has been performing satisfactorily for several years! Just lucky I guess.

General | Posted 3 years agoGroceries are loaded into the back of the car; A takes the shopping cart to the cart corral. Passing a young mother who had been in line in front of us inside the store, he offers to take her cart as she had just finished loading up her own vehicle.
Some dude sees this, smiles at A and just leaves his cart in the middle of the lot for A to take as well.
Upon return...
A: I guess he thought I worked here.
M: You should have kicked the cart so it wheeled straight into his truck.
A: I should have smiled back and just left it there.
M: Although...I try to remember to consciously do nice things for older guys. Hold open doors, smile at them, things like that. Lots of people will help old women, mothers, pretty younger women. But guys are told "You figure it out" and nobody cares about their problems. But I want them to see that someone thinks--
A: Someone thinks "You're an ugly old man and I feel sorry for you so I'm helping you"?
M: ...(sputters something that sounds like a denial, and then sulks)

General | Posted 3 years agoNeat 3d prints (I don't think I spotted any of those last month):
Lord of the Print with one that seems similar to one I've seen before, including a little...interesting detail midway down the tail.
by NaH Outpost. (NaH...is that Sodium Hydrazine?) Looks like it's good for an RPG tabletop map.
by Clay Rade. Cockatrice hen, with a somewhat stubby tail.
Warploque Miniatures gives us this take. I'm digging the spurs on that guy.
A crest with a cockatrice carved on it, fit for the ornamentation of any fine establishment.
Throw pillow with our favorite Minton pattern (goes with the teapot, coffee pot, plates and saucers) for a relaxing teatime or meal.
Sew this onto your jacket and show you're a supporting member!
I knew it was just a matter of time before there was a cryptocurrency named for Basilisks. Here we go with BSX, available for purchase through Kraken. I found another article here that tries to explain what the hubbub is all about but...doesn't quite manage? (My gut feeling is don't rush to jump on board...this egg cracked and spoiled loooong before hatching time.
A mask that if I were inclined to do things for Halloween, I'd think about ordering.
Cloak clothing? Magical cloaks? Suuuuure. (I had misread it as "My cloaca is magical!" at first.)
A podcast! By the SCP experience, this reenacts the events of this entry in the SCP database. Unhappy endings are normal in SCP stories, as I recall.
And some...music. Or at least, sound effects? Cockatrice by Noah Scheer.

General | Posted 3 years agoNot a whole lot came by this month that I hadn't already spotted and mentioned. But there were a few things.
A halfling wouldn't be too heavy! Ride into battle, spotted on Pintrest. Not sure where the picture was uploaded before it appeared on that site's radar.
Nice looking painting by Ryan Barger from Fine Art America. I may have come across this before, but it was nice enough to include again. You can get it as something to hang up in your lair, on apparel, and even on stationary...thinking about that!
Last month I had quite a few tea accessories; this month I came across a coffee pot on Etsy. Much more my speed!
Also on Etsy, a plush that comes with a book I've mentioned before, Once Upon the Rhine. I like the tail!
Included for completeness; I think there are translation issues, as well as...design issues with the pacing of the manga. I guess they can't all be hits. Volume 1, Chapter 3 of Isekai Desu Ga Mamono Saibai Shiteimasu. Speaking of tails, I did think about having the more traditional snake head at the end but didn't have the guts to go through with it so I'm stuck with just the single chicken head. ;>
I sometimes think about getting a fursuit. Here's someone's interpretation. They say they hate the way the comb came out, maybe it looks worse from the side? But I like the teeth.
And finally:
Half-Wishes of the Cockatrice
To skim a curdling light
from the blue of dawn,
to slither in the furrow
of a mud-churned wagon rut,
to bellow above warbling
and spit forth, no parched
throat, no red eyes, no dust.
To bless the day without
looking any of them
in the dying canopy dead
but knowing one bald
morning they'll collapse
in shrieks
with sticks and feathers.

General | Posted 3 years agoArtwork from the D&D classic edition: the A-C set which includes both a Basilisk and a Cockatrice, among others.
A few 3-D prints: first off, this Cockatrice (which looks a little like it's supposed to be topping a cane, or something) by kompaster.
Two from Etsy:
Yasashii Kyojin Studio with a very detailed head and a...very smooth tail. The wings are also a bit flat. Might need a bit more work.
GlaerOfDoom has much more detail and credits ClayBeast Creations for the model design.
Other artwork:
A framed page that could be taken out of a book by Nancy Hulan.
A tattoo design of the good old heradlic style, featuring a cobra head on the tail. It's been around for a while but my search just found it on elisemaraart's stream on Instagram.
Spotted on Twitter: A cockatrice teapot from the 19th century. I never liked tea..maybe I could get coffee instead?
Cups to go with it though I think they're for soft-boiled eggs.
A tumbler from Etsy with a similar pattern is available for those who want bigger servings!
And if you have a snack too, you'll need one of thesenicely patterned dishes. I don't think I've gotten things from this site before, rubylane. Might be of interest to those who like antiquing.
The model of mouse I use for work has earned the ECOLOGO mark for being a sustainable product (made from renewable materials perhaps). I don't know if my particular model is. Mine certainly doesn't glow with all colors of the rainbow like the one in the picture...right, June was Pride Month, wasn't it.
A tank top, Stop Staring at my Cockatrice; and a shower curtain, Cockatrice vs. Lion pattern, from RedBubble. They're coming up with something new just about every month.
I think this is a repeat performance, because I recognize that puppet. I'm sure I've mentioned this show being performed elsewhere, but I like the idea (even if it ends badly for the hero at the hands of a nun, of all people).
And I don't often dig through Reddit but this theory on the natural history of cockatrices caught my eye mostly because...I've put forward that theory on numerous occasions! Or rather, my family has put forward that theory on numerous occasions to try to explain how I could possibly be part of the flock. Brood parasitism is something that probably deserves some fetish writing...mmmm hmmm. Not the infestation type I've seen, but maybe something I haven't run across yet. Good old stealthy sneaking around.
Last, and maybe least: Musings on "NewTube" (which I haven't heard of until finding this recording) of a Bible study about Cockerels, Hens, Cockatrices, Vipers, and eggs. I think there was supposed to be a slide show or some visuals that go along with this but it doesn't come through. There's a corresponding channel on YouTube but I don't think that has been updated recently and this particular...informative...video doesn't appear in that collection.
The year's half over. Stay tuned for more hits on this particular corner of the heraldic barnyard!

General | Posted 3 years agoMother Mother Playlist. Honorary mention this month since it's not quite fitting the theme but...mythological chickens have to stick together.
One of my favorites, Touch Up
A band from Finland, Cocatrice. Requires downloads to listen, haven't gotten around to that just yet. So try at your own risk!
A game, Soul Hackers 2 (they hack souls, and seem to summon things with...saliva? I can't tell) now features the Basilisk. Nice tailfeathers along with the tail! Skip to about 25 seconds into the video there.
Update: I believe this is an English translation of the spoken words.
Forgotten Runes Market, which might be a game...or an NFT marketing site? I had no idea these eggs came in such varieties. I should start paying more attention! Nice picture of one of the parents here.
I think this is part of a piece that showed up last month, but here he is again, Great Cockatrice.
Or maybe it's just a very common pose? I should start working my core muscles more, because I certainly can't rear up like that.
I could do this, though. Thanks to Big Miniature World on Etsy for another pattern!
A neat little cockatrice perching on what might be parts of a spine!. From MyMiniFactory.
On to other media:
Big six-legged fellows like my original character on Tapestries and FurryMUCK, back in the day! Poison breath that wilts plants? Check! Petrifying gaze attack? Check! Unfortunately they only seem to appear in epsiode two and one of them is fodder for the main character, Arc, in Skeleton Knight in Another World, aka Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechuu. Yet another Isekai...I'll skim through it to see if the basilisks make another appearance, as there were strange magical bands around one of their hind feet that hinted at something to be revealed later. Arc reminds me of Ainz Ooal Gown (or more precisely, Ainz alter ego Momon, the Raven Black Hero) except he's broke and a much nicer guy. He has a high energy intro as well!
Propoganda toys of that wretched Harry Potter stabbing one of the oldest basilisks in the mouth after he had his little phoenix friend tag in and do most of the work. That is a TRAGEDY. But then again, shame on the old scalebutt for falling in with that loser Riddle. The propaganda part comes in due to the fact that the model clearly shows the eyes 100% undamaged. Right, Harry....right. That's how it all went down.
Better propoganda: Basilisks helped a gamer learn how to play Dark Souls and enjoy herself.
Jigsaw puzzle Cockatrice by Gellihana-art though I'm not sure if that is the artist who did the original artwork? Still entertaining.
Yarn named after the Cockatrice...not sure if it's special for anything besides scarves or washcloths, which is about all I can knit. I'll try to branch out sooner or later.
Big ol' bedspread or "Duvet" as they like to call it. Sleep soundly under there!
And another article of clothing from RedBubble: Cockatrice A-line dress by ValoniaArt.
Finally another set of D&D adventurers encounter cockatrices. Derps and Dragons look like they upload adventures every other week. At around 25 minutes they have conversations about a satyr feeling a bit put off by games played with goatskins. "I am not a bull, I am a minotaur...you are not a goat, you're a satyr. You shouldn't feel ba-a-a-a-ad about this!" And at 41 "You know how your grandpa f'ed a goat? Mine f'ed an owl...so I'm nocturnal!" The cockatrices begin to show up about 50 minutes in. They're the nerfed cockatrices that just turn you to stone for 24 hours, but I suppose that could be inconvenient if everyone got pecked.
Quite a bit for this month! I'll keep pecking and scratching around to see what I can uncover in June, stay tuned.

General | Posted 3 years agoM looks at a tool for drawing circles of various sizes while A is drawing.
M: I wonder how much area is left, after you punch out all of the circles? It starts at about 48 square inches since it's...what, 6 by 8? And then you lose each circle's area...what's left?
A: Three.
M: Three square inches?
A: Yes. I'm sticking with that.
M: I'll find out tomorrow while you're at work. And if you're right, I'll give you a reward!
A: What?
M begins making what he hopes are seductive and suggestive faces, ending with a bit of tongue showing. (Like this but worse.)
A: A tongue bath? Cool!
(I did find out the answer, I might toss it out as a bonus problem next semester.)

General | Posted 3 years agoThis dates back two years or so. I didn't want it to slip 100% away.
There was no vaccine; many businesses were closed. Grocery stores had certain items out of stock, you just had to go and hope you were lucky. A familiar pair drives home from a visit to their local shop.
A: It looked like most people were wearing masks in the grocery store.
M: Yeah, from watching the news I wondered if we'd run into confrontations or shouting matches.
M thinks.
M: They could maybe put out PSA's about famous role models wearing masks. Like...Optimus Prime. He's got on a mask in his original character design.
A: Mmm hmmm.
M: You know who didn't wear a mask?
A: No.
M: Megatron..
M nods and holds up a finger for emphasis.
M: Because he's evil.
A's expression remains inscrutable.

Introduction
General | Posted 3 years agoIn response to a Thursday Prompt. You should check those out!
I began my career as a Combinatorialist. Everyone knows that you can describe a thing by enumerating what properties it has, but anyone good at counting realizes early on that you can often define things by what they are not.
Am I well-known? No.
Am I putting myself out there? No, it just doesn't feel right.
Furry writer? Well, sort of. I'm trying to write a book, but it will be a textbook and the probability of anyone reading this also picking up the textbook and reading it are...at best, no more than 6/485. I'm a little surprised that this is more than 1%! (I thought about putting this up as a featured journal so people checking out my page could read this introduction, but the thought of updating that fraction every so often seems like a hassle.)
I put up a monthly report about basilisk and cockatrice sightings; my favorites are full of artwork people have put up of these two...er, this...mythological...set of creature(s). It's complicated. I'm just here for the awesome basilisk/cockatrice origin story.
Most of my writing is the result of conversations I have with people, or incredible RP ideas that I can't find anyone to participate with, or stuff I write about characters who really grab my attention.
Not a fur-suiter, not a big con-goer. I'll let everyone know if I do decide to go to one. If I do, I'll likely have my significant badger with me. And he's more interesting to talk to than I am. Pester him for free art--he loves it.
I began my career as a Combinatorialist. Everyone knows that you can describe a thing by enumerating what properties it has, but anyone good at counting realizes early on that you can often define things by what they are not.
Am I well-known? No.

General | Posted 3 years agoOh no have you been saying it wrong the whole time? It grates on my ears to hear "Cockatrice" rhyme with lease, grease, and geese. Thanks for backing me up, Cambridge Dictionary!
The 3d printing and crafting community has become active again!
The Basilisk vs. The Cockatrice. A 3d figurine from Neil Billings that makes me ask...can't we all just get along? It looks pretty sweet, though. Maybe they both let go with the "hard stare" at the same time, resulting in the original model for the figure?
Weird news again...short article, using the term loosely, about cockatrices and chickens.
Gaming hits:
Lineage Monster Encyclopedia: an entry about the appearance in a game, but animated (somewhat). Neat to look at!
RPG adventure about shutting down a cockatrice fighting league. Well, if they WANT to fight...(See the guys in Billing's figurine!)
The hideous Basilisk of Rot from Elden Ring might be worth a visit if you want some hints.
Some literature:
A book which I may have brought up before, Fool Me Cockatrice by Lee Newman. Has a nice cover, anyway.
Another book in part of a series, Cody the Cockatrice the not-so-imaginary friend of some boys tells them about Iceland.
A very interesting podcast: The Constant: A History of Getting Things Wrong has episode about the rooster's trial in Basel for the attempted introduction of a basilisk (or cockatrice) to the area, and other trials with non-human defendants: rats, weevils, a rampaging wolf that may have been the recently deceased despotic Burgermeister, and the rooster. The trials were split into sort of "class action" Ecclesiastical suits against all rodents, slugs, or moles causing damage; or specific individuals tried in a more secular, criminal trial like the wolf or the most-often animal accused of murder: pigs. The last type was for the crime of mere existence of heinous and unnatural beings, or witch trials. The important part for me started around the 48 minute mark. Never forget: August, 1474.
And finally, a gruesome story for the kiddies by Sean E. Britten, The Hunt. It's at a site named Booksie which seems to let you publish your own stuff. Any other writers hear of it?

General | Posted 3 years agoNot much from the world of 3d art this month, but there were a few sightings and mentions.
A little bit of footage from ARK; a player (who speaks Hindi) takes a tamed cockatrice for a test drive. I love the chicken head. Seriously.
Digital artwork by Ryan Barger: The Cockatrice. Looks like the beak was slicing up leftovers there. And what a contour on the tail! Goes from super thick to slender...work it, burd.
Short piece of fiction from Paul Kingsnorth entitled The Basilisk though it's more about how the world is ending, and which gang might be behind it after all. Trying to identify a culprit through their tried and true methods can be an art as well as a science. I liked it for a quote, which Mr. Kingsnorth attributes to C.S. Lewis: He compared our narrow, blinded “analytical understanding” of the world to the gaze of the Basilisk, the mythical creature which kills a person just by gazing upon it. Everything a Basilisk looks at dies. It walks through a dead world thinking it is seeing reality.
I've seen previews for a Morbius movie, which reminds me that I have a particular comic book somewhere featuring Basilisk vs. Morbius. That particular picture was on the cover, I believe. It's also featured at this top ten enemies the character has, though I remember him being somewhat...toned down from what I normally think of when I imagine basilisks I know.
Thomas Pesendorfer is being awarded for his work designing coins. I'm only familiar with one of the coins he designed (and for good reason): I own this one thanks to a very significant badger in my life.
Talked about my mouse before. I use it at work; people have asked me about games I'm into because apparently the mouse is pretty well-known in gamer circles? But no...it just does math for me. Lots of math. And manipulating grade spreadsheets.
From an album entitled With A Golden Sickle: The Cockatrice and the Storm-Cock by Temple Music/Rendeece:
The Cockatrice: Ominous sounding, scratching sounds with thumping percussion and something that might be strings twanging or a distorted voice calling to you from the distance...
The Storm-Cock: Beginning with something reminiscent of a church organ, then overtaken with other sounds that might be inspired by radio interference or other such sounds; it isn't quite as eerie or threatening as the other track. It has a flavor of being awed or amazed into silence, instead of being frightened.
Rendeece is a musician from Greece with a blog: https://rendeece-faust.blogspot.com/
I like the album art as well!
And last but not least: a rooster lays an egg while crowing at sunrise. The rooster is on the roof of a barn; Susie is on the East side and Rick is on the West side. Who will catch the egg? A classic riddle, to be sure.
See the answer here!

General | Posted 4 years agoFrom a site called MQEmulator (I thought it was Moe Mulator at first!) there's a nice looking cockatrice monster. I think it's from EverQuest?
And the Witcher's bestiary has spawned yet another article.
The headline The Worst Dark Souls bullshit is back coming up when I was looking for basilisk references gave me pause, but then I saw the picture. Yow. Really taking after the bulging-eyed toad side of the family there, aren't you buddy?
A sculpture of a sculpture maker...what goes around comes around. A slightly "derpy" entry from Attic Studios.
More RPG material but of the 3d variety: Cockatrice work in progress. Though the pictures seem pretty dated--back to 2014? Not sure why they're only showing up now. But there's lots of close up detailed pictures of great craftsmanship!
A four-winged fellow here for 3d printing by ClayBeastCreation.
Very nice flowing wings and good balance on one leg with this resin miniature. Looks like the vendor has a nice selection.
Standard fare from WTHStudios. The base has "Cock-A-Doodle-Doo" which...I won't comment on.
Pictures of a painted miniature by K.C. Holt. I haven't been able to pick myself off the ground with my tail like that for....years. Maybe time for a diet.
I've probably put up a link to something like this in the past, but who can say no to a nest?
A familiar picture to me, at any rate: This is hanging up in my office thanks to a certain badger.
I may have to pay more attention to RedBubble, they've showed up a few times in the last couple of months with items.
Cockatrice Duvet cover
T-shirt design. This might be a repeat? But it looks good, so...
A nice onesie for a baby. Adorable! Pattern available on throw pillows and as a sticker.
Beautiful artwork from Yihyoung Li. Pretty big fellow there!
Neat little engraving here that seems to be for the cassette tape recordings of Betwixt & Between, a musical group with a dedication to heraldry that I can admire.
And also in the heraldry camp, a patch by Jeff Bass, who has quite a few "cryptid patches" for sale.
Get tickets to the Doom and Bloom show, which looks to be some sort of improv event in New Zealand. The artwork reminded me of Spike and Mike's Animation Festival promotional material, though I don't think those two ever did a cockatrice.
And I think I've mentioned this PBS special before but someone pointed it out again:
Basilisk or Cockatrice? The Mysterious King of Serpents

January BasilCock Review
General | Posted 4 years agoArt and models
A neat 3d render for Captain Dapplewing's Manor.
Also interesting Cocatrix By La Louve 3D. It's grouped into a collection called CryptMonkeyGames which has some other interesting personalities.
A tattoo, which is cute but still doesn't lead me to want to get one just yet.
Cheapo-looking version that looks like it's mass-produced. But everyone deserves some miniatures!
I think I've shared this before, but it was good enough to bring up again: A diorama about why you don't mess with us. In the little guy's defense, he might have gotten his hands on this list of recipes that use cockatrice eggs.
I've shared this before too but a stuffed cockatrice to sleep with would be so cute!
Products!
A t-shirt that probably has artwork from somewhere else. Nice snake head on the tail!
A bath mat with another nice print. I could use something like that.
A video game?
I found this link and I don't know if the browser version is just...a sample? I couldn't win it. Play as Trixi, a cockatrice in search of the Secular Goblet...I couldn't help poor Trixi.
Media:
Short podcast focusing a lot on the D&D monster manual version. "They can choose whether to petrify you, apparently!" Well duh!
And at last, an event I wish I could go visit, because it sounded interesting: The Cockatrice's Egg: Exhibition and book launch. And artist, Joy Parker, and a poet, Robert Leach, traveled through Scotland to find...well, I guess you'd have to get the book. And I might like to at some point! But the launch isn't happening for a few more days. And it's in the UK.
