so if you've followed me here for a while, you probably are aware of the ways i've been loud, facetious, and perhaps even volatile in the past, usually when criticizing the habits of online artists and fandoms (with focus on the furpeople becus look where the fuck we at lmao). that's all well and good, but i feel like by having done that for several years, i've invited a sort of familiarity from strangers here that isn't appropriate given how little they, like, know about me lol

i suppose it can't be helped! when you're caustic and loud, you will attract people who want to match how caustic and loud you are. the endearing thing is that this has, i think, been done by some people in respect, as a way to buddy up and interact with me on level ground and with the kind of humor they feel i'd appreciate. "noice," was my initial reaction to this, by the by. i probably also did a fortnite dance and then whacked off to my pageview count after getting any of those kinds of comments. but like....... homie idk you

lemme be clear: i don't feel any ill will towards basically anybody i interact with on the reg (if i did, why would i interact with them) and i understand most people mean no malice when they go about this sorta thing. but people need to understand that we don't know each other. i'm not your friend. idk what your humor is like, what's going through your head as you say things to me, what my art means to you if anything! and you can't say the same about me because i don't recall telling anyone anyone here any of these things in great detail over years of close friendship lol. so i'd appreciate it if we didn't do this song and dance

example given: i once discussed an arrangement i'd had with a now ex of mine and how happy we both were about it. everyone was inarguably supportive, legit everyone, but a handful - a larger handful of people then i'd thought there'd be, people who i am not nearly close enough to to feel comfortable allowing them to say this to me - went ahead and called me and my then-partner faggots. here i was having to hear random people i'm sure meant no harm calling me one of the nastiest words i've had used earnestly against me to express how i'm lesser, and not a single one of them seemed to understand why that's, ya know, kinda fuckt. imagine my disgusted surprise !

this isn't just about that one event, obvs. i've been over it for a long time. but it's an example of this overfamiliarity, this unearned and nonsensical sense of closeness i feel is motivating this way of interaction. i've had people who watch me, like my stuff, and agree with my positions when i get into ranting and raving go on to insult me, insult my art, and shrug off any shred of emotional vulnerability i half-jokingly share with some variation of discord chat maymays. and it baffles me because i don't even allow the people closest to me to say or do most of these things, and if i do, it's because i'm their friend. we know each other inside and out and have covert permission to pull that shit on each other

i don't keep bringing up the sentiment that I'm Not Your Friend to be cruel or act coldly. i don't mean it as a kick in the dick to anyone. it's just true! very few people here know me or have gotten to see what i'm really like irl. people have specifically wanted to be friends with me because they related to "how much of a cunt" i am and how i'm "a hardass", all without knowing so much as how i like my fuckin morning coffee made! it's madness, oh it's wild, frothing, buttfuckingly heinous madness to talk to a total stranger this way just because you like his bitching and his dog scribbles!!

but enough about me, i hate talking about that bitch. the greater point i'm trying to make here (and there is one! because ofc there is! jesus!!!) is that this is not an unseen phenomenon in online art spaces. this is something i see a lot of artists, especially those who are genuinely PoPuLaR, deal with. they are approached and spoken to as if strangers have known them since kindergarten. they get called bitches and assholes and cunts and worse in a joking tone from people who, even if its only for the moment, lack the social grace to realize YOU DONT SAY THAT SHIT TO TOTAL STRANGERS. and you don't know dick-and-a-half about someone as a human being based on the meager, jokey 2 message back-and-forths you have with them in the comments of their online art galleries

okay but seriously, there's a lotta ppl on sites like this who keep asserting that stuff like adoptables and ychs n shit are scams? and most of the reasons that ppl give for these things being Suspiciously Scammy could easily be applied to general art commissions, which fsr nobody around here seems to think very lowly of, thinking face emoji. make u do a thunk dont it. there's an exception to this but let's put a pin in that for now

to be clear and provide some direction to this discussion, the definition of scam that i am using is when you take someone's money (or art, or service, or whatever else) in an exchange that's dishonest, wherein what you give back is not what you promised you'd give. there's an inherent Fuck You Got Mine deal going on with scams. if you provide someone with something that is of lesser quality then advertised, that's a scam. if you ditch ppl who've paid you without any product being given, that's a scam. if you worded something in a manipulative way or have created loopholes so you can abuse the exchange for your own personal gain, that's a scam.

adoptables aren't scams. the product being sold is the rights to a predesigned character and the rights to use the original art of that character, so if those things are provided then it was a normal transaction. ychs aren't scams, especially when it's made clear that multiple people may purchase a variant of the same image. closed species tend to have a lotta issues wrt the navigation of IP rights (this is a discussion for another day), but if you agree to the terms and get what it's been stated you will get, oh my god its not a fucking scam

most people calling these things scams, in my experience, are simply ppl who don't see the appeal to them. that's all well and good - there's plenty of shit out there in the art world that never has appealed to me and likely never will unless i can make bank offa it. you don't need to change your preferences. but that's all they are: your preferences. and most of the ways ppl describe their preferences about this sorta art are kinda silly and could easily be turned on regular commissions.

"why buy an adopt? just design a character yourself!" why commission someone to draw your oc? because you either lack drawing as a skill or you can't create art the same way they can. same deal here. character design is a skill not everyone has

"what's the point of ychs? it's just the same art with a different coat of paint!" why don't i see this being used against artists who sameface every commission or who don't try new poses? because people like their work regardless and are often more interested in their skill as an illustrator then they are in their originality

in fact, most art that gets called "scammy" is just art that's been premade or preprepared, which fsr makes ppl think it takes less time and effort then regular art. this is foolish becus most of the pay for these is being used to compensate time the artist spent creating it initially, so it's not like you're paying for 5 seconds of labor. the only thing that really makes art a valuable service that ppl deserve pay for, esp wrt digital stuff, is the fact that it takes time and effort. this isn't anything new.

let's pull that pin from before out and discuss the major exception to this Premade Art Is The Devil bullshit: thinking that someone is scamming other ppl becus they get paid a lot more then other artists for making admittedly often mediocre work. this pissed me off for years and it still bugs me sometimes, as it does with a lotta my artist friends, but there's a flaw in the logic, and that flaw is jealousy

artists get mad seeing others make like $50 a pop on sketches becus we wish it was us. how dare someone make more money then me doing )what i, in a fit of rage, always presume is) the same amount of, if not less, labor. whats wrong with the slathering masses who spent literally thousands a month on patreon furry porn while i eat ramen noodles and sit on $5 in my bank account and yadda yadda yadda. it's so, so easy to get bitter about it, and frankly that's fine. feel however you want. i'll never stop being a touch huffy about not having broken into the art i really wanna do yet while watching ppl become wealthy offa shit i find boring and poorly made

but here's the clincher: those ppl have simply cracked the da vinci code. even if their art is total shit, they're making more then you because they have a different skill, which is amassing a hoard of ppl who like their shit. marketing is just as important, if not moreso, then actual art skill. these bitches have just perfected it. they earned the right to price their sketches at $50 a pop by attracting attention to themselves in the right way from the right ppl. they have enough consistent customers and a vast enough fanbase to ask for that level of pay and see it happen. they are not "scammers", they are simply better then you at a different skill then art

a question that has nothing to do with art for once: what kinda ye olde stuff that's admittedly pretty low quality makes you remember all those happy feelings you had when you were still a kid/still produced serotonin? the more guilty the pleasure the better

for me, it's geocities pages, virtual pet browser games, and bootleg vhs tapes of godawful saturday morning cartoons based on preexisting media franchises

so here's smth i've been thinkin about right: the one golden beacon of how everyone improves at art is practice. we all been knew. but the issue is that "practice" doesn't describe...... anything. neither does the vague notion of "life drawing" or "studying", becus these are just the names ascribed to specific routines, not the nitty gritty or mindset behind how you absorb new information from them or how you as an individual go about best learning them

to simplify, i've got this question for yous guys: what particular methods have you found most helpful in improving your art, outside of the obvious Draw A Bunch and Use References? and if those were the ways you did it, how did you, the individual, do it? e.g. if you learned from from using references, what were you looking for in those references? where did your focus drift; to color, form, construction, perspective? what methods did you notice made your use of references go from Meh to Hell Yeh?

this question is a little vague maybe, but you don't have to agonize over an answer. i'd just rly enjoy knowing what goes thru other artists' heads when they're actively working to improve. we can steal from each other, it'll be a blast

my contribution: when i'm familiar with a subject, i focus on what the parts actually are, but when i'm studying from life i try and think of them as abstract shapes that follow a variety of rules. i.e. an eyeball in a regular drawing is an eyeball, but from a photo study an eyeball is a wet sphere that would react x way to y lighting situation, and tends to look like z in perspective. i shift my mindset for practicality's sake because otherwise i warp and exaggerate proportions

all this talk of my recovery is a bummer, yeah? like god bless everyone for being supportive, not shittalking anyone for their kindness, never would i ever, but let's have some fun and bitch about stuff like old times!

imo the most obnoxious fucking art quirk is people studying one animal to death and then attempting to apply the same rules to every animal's anatomy across the board, like someone who only knows how to draw the lion king fanart applying lion anatomy to dogs, or someone drawing literally every animal's face like a dog, or oh my god stop drawing just dogs.

my favorite thing is the increasing rise of literal children, as in typically teens 13-18 y/o, who have become fantastically good at color coordination and composition thanks to the internet's collection of free art knowledge. they tend to be lacking in anatomy and constructing solid characters (this is understandable, that shit's hard) but the god tier lighting saves it every time. what the fuck. i feel so old

to people who have been asking for them or are waiting for invoices: i'm afraid i won't be able to take on your orders at this time. i know i've been saying to ask about them if you're interested, but that was my bad. i overestimated my healing progress and have been put on medication that's making me feel sick before it makes me better, and it has cut into the energy i can expend on work. i don't want everyone waiting for unreasonable amounts of time wrt their orders, so i'll have to decline any offers for new ones, which includes ones i wanted to take on but have not been paid for yet. i'm deeply sorry for this and i promise i won't reopen commissions of any type until i'm back to my old self again. thank you very much for all of the interest though! perhaps i'll make these types of commissions a permanent addition to my selection

i've been running into some complications in my medical care as of late that put me in a way that makes working as consistently as i used to very difficult. to all those who have commissioned me and are waiting for your portraits: i will get them done, and i will get them done very soon, but it might be more then the couple of days i initially estimated for some of you. if this is making you antsy, you may ask for a refund any time and i'll provide it. i understand any wariness. i'm not planning on letting anyone down - i adamantly refuse to, and i appreciate the patience i've been met with through this entire event - but if you have any hangups wrt wait times, please communicate with me and we'll work something out

Any regular types (read: types that are listed in my info) I have currently accepted and not completed will still be completed before their respective deadlines, but I won't be taking on any more for a while.
