The last relationship put me in a bad place artistically...and have finally been pulled outta that slump!
I am focusing on my first passion, which is music. I wish I had time for drawing more...but not at the moment.
See y'all soon. ):-D

Indianapolis Items
Posted 10 years agoHere are my impressions of downtown Indianapolis after visiting for a few days.
•There must be some sort of socialized government fertilizing program here. These burnt umber coloured wood chips have been spread not only all around every single plant in the public parks and spaces, but the identical stuff is on and around every single plant on private property too. And with recent heavy rains, it all has a very strong manure smell to it.
•Graffiti must be a capital offense here. I have never seen a city's downtown so bereft of self-actualized individualized wall decorations. I finally found one, under a bridge, where the tagger had to be standing in water.
•This city must have a budget surplus. I have never seen so much bizarre yet unimpressive modern public art in a metropolis before.
•This city sure knows how to make Mac'n'Cheese! The two best I've ever had, two nights in a row from two different places!

Any of you'all gonna be there?
We're definately going to be at the fat furs panel on Sunday, and the Grom-off on Saturday night at the burrito place.
Hope to see some of you!

Been so long...so long...so long
Posted 12 years ago...since I've been puttin' out fire with gasoline!
Yeah...been so long...I couldn't figure out how to post a new journal.
Looking over my journal list and seeing "six years" as when some were posted. OMG has that much time really passed? That's one of the strange things about getting older...time speeds up quicker and quicker. Yeah sounds crazy. But just you wait. You'll see.
So, yeah. Still alive and kickin'. At least today.
Not much to say...because there's so much to say.
So I'll just say...hey!

I would like to thank everyone who has watched me during this severe art drought, and I will get to the comments soon.
It is good to see that this place really hasn't changed...so many of the people I know are still here.
So yeah. Good to be a hippo.
Oh...and I see that they FINALLY added a Hippopotamus species in the submission form! It's about time!!!

Rumours of my demise are greatly exaggerated!
Posted 15 years agoI haven't been very active on here since March...mostly just lurking and keeing a quick eye on things...and doling out advice to
Sacred about his new fish tank.
I got totally sucked into Webkinz World, and have had a lot of good things going on in my real world life as well, so my extra time has been pretty non-existent for quite awhile.
I will be moving closer to my work soon, so that will free up an extra two hours of time every weekday, and I intend to use it to do art and keep up with FA.

Flash Disaster - Furnal Equinox - Webkinz Mania
Posted 15 years agoFlash DisasterJust before I left home to go to my first con, I had just about finished a weight gain animation in Flash. I was about an hour and a half from completion when Flash OBLITERATED the file!!! Gone...like it had never even existed in the first place. Three days of hard work...completely vanished into cybernothingness.
And I did all the wrong things before looking up the problem on the internet...so there was no way for me to remedy the problem. I was so pissed off...
The moral of the story: if you are working with Flash...WORK WITH YOUR FILE ON THE C:\ DRIVE not on a network drive!
Furnal EquinoxI went to my first furry convention, Furnal Equinox in Toronto. I went with
feathery whose birdsuit needed lots of last minute adjustment and sewing from me, but was fabulous! I attended a class in making fursuit heads, and a basic drawing class as well...now I'm confident enough that I will be able to make a hippo fursuit at some point, and my artwork will improve a little more. I commissioned two pieces from
xenotropos who did a fabulous job in a very quick time! The highlight of the convention though was going out to dinner with
hypr,
mmm-dumpling, and
feathery at the Japanese restaurant in the hotel which had a chef who was very fond of making meter-tall flames on the cooking table in front of us!Webkinz ManiaA few days later,
feathery and I hung out with
mmm-dumpling and visited many fun toy stores and pet shops on a rainy day in Toronto.
Dodge was working in one of the malls we visited, and we popped by to visit him. In the Hallmark Store, I found a brown hippo plushie...a "Mud Hippo" from Webkinz.
Well...now I'm totally addicted to playing in the online Webkinz World!!! So if any of y'all have pets on there...gimme a holler!
My First Con!
Posted 15 years agoWell after being in the fandom for almost three years, I am attending my first convention!
I'm headed there with
feathery!
So any of y'all else that are going...I hope to see you there! :3

Sea Level Rising...update
Posted 16 years agoOriginal Journal entry here:
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1032013/
12/1/2009, 11am. Same height or higher than 11/4/2009. Only two blocks stuck out of the water to the right of the block with the round hole in it. Last rain was four days ago. No wind.
12/3/2009: Highest level yet. The top of the concrete with the round hole in it was half submerged; up to the gash in the left side (the two furthest dimples were still above water). The blocks closer than the round hole concrete were almost completely submerged. Further than the round hole concrete only one block on the right side was out of water: the left peak of the piece made of two perpendicular blocks. Last rain was six days ago. No wind. After feeding, my seagull friend stands on "his" rock, which is completely submerged - making him look like he is standing on the water.

The Sea Level IS Rising
Posted 16 years agoI have been at my job for two years now. And for two years I have been eating lunch and doing tai chi at the same little peninsula overlooking a lagoon that's connected to San Francisco Bay that's connected to The Pacific Ocean.
There's a bunch of enormous blocks of concrete that make up the little peninsula in the lagoon. One of the pieces has a piece of rebar sticking out of it that kinda looks like a lizard hanging on. For all this time, that piece of concrete was never even close to being underwater until one day during the last week of September, 2009 when it was completely submerged.
Then I selected a piece of concrete with a round hole in it to judge the water level when the rebar block is submerged. That hole was half covered in water one day during the first week of October - which was only one week later!
On October 20, 2009 the round hole in that concrete block was completely underwater.
So then I selected the slanted top of that same block with the round hole in it and the very tips of three other blocks that were just barely sticking above the water as ways to judge the water level when the round hole is covered.
Today, November 4, 2009, the slanted top of that block was about 1/3 underwater and the tips of the other three blocks were completely submerged. Another block that my seagull friend climbs out of the water to perch on after I feed him was also submerged - as he stood on it today it appeared as if he was just standing on the surface of the water!
So 4 times in the last 6 weeks I have been able to say "This is the highest I have ever seen the water level in the last two years."
Draw your own conclusions. I am only reporting my observations.

A change of colours...
Posted 16 years agoThe colour I had been using in my posts, saddlebrown, worked fine on the "light" FA template, but was difficult to read on the "dark" FA template. So I have tested some different colours, and whittled it down to the final two contestants: "Chocolate" and "Peru".
I would appreciate your feedback as to which of the two paragraphs below you find is an easier colour to read, or if you feel the same about them, and also which template you use (light or dark). Thanks!
Chocolate has become one of the most popular food types and flavors in the world. Gifts of chocolate molded into different shapes have become traditional on certain holidays: chocolate bunnies and eggs are popular on Easter, chocolate coins on Hanukkah, Santa Claus and other holiday symbols on Christmas, and hearts on Valentine's Day. Chocolate is also used in cold and hot beverages, to produce chocolate milk and hot chocolate.
Peru is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions. Its geography varies from the arid plains of the Pacific coast to the peaks of the Andes mountains and the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin. It is a country with a high Human Development Index score and a poverty level around 36%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, fishing, mining, and manufacturing of products such as textiles.

Recovering
Posted 16 years agoI had a mild heart attack Saturday night/Sunday. Went to the hospital on Tuesday and just got released.
Ends up being a good thing that it happened - half my heart has been repaired and the other half will be soon.

Hippo Vehicles

1) 1969 Volkswagon Beetle
•Nickname: "The Bug"
•Colour: Tan
•Transmission/Engine: V4, Automatic stickshift. Yes. An automatic stickshift. Had a stick, but no pedal to push. When you touched the knob of the stickshift the engine went into neutral.
•Story: This was my dad's car that he drove to work. When I was little my oldest brother would tell me "Neat Stories" while we drove around - basically he just made up shit. I loved it! The coolest thing about this vehicles was the "Check Check Brakes Light". In the middle of the dashboard was a red button/light with a "B" on it. When you pushed it, it lit up red. Apparently if it ever lit up on its own, your brakes had failed. Therefore you could push it to make sure that the red light hadn't burned out and that your brakes had already failed but you didn't know it. (Sometimes Germans are just TOO logical and efficient!) But for me it was the button to fire the guns/lasers/torpedoes during the "Neat Stories".
•Fate: I had it for only days when I drove it off to my second year of college and parked it on the street. Being a clueless teenager from the suburbs, I didn't know about street-sweeping and parking limitations. I assume it got a ticket early on in the week. It was gone Friday night when I went to go use it.
2) 1974 Chevrolet Kingswood Estate
•Nickname: "The Inertiamobile" Got its name from the second half of the principle of inertia: "an object in motion tends to remain in motion".
•Colour: Yellowish-Greenish with Faux Wood Paneling
•Transmission/Engine: Automatic, V8 engine
•Story: This was my mom's car for a long time before it was mine. Huge. Powerful. Room for all my college friends to pile in and go on road trips. It was much used and loved. Reached my land-speed record of 108mph in this vehicle. It wouldn't go a bit faster at all than that.
•Fate: When I moved back home it had a ripped up ceiling, the back window had been completely smashed, and one fender was almost falling off. My mom couldn't stand seeing it parked outside our house gave it away to someone who worked at the old-age home that my grandma lived at.
3) 1985 Honda Elite Scooter
•Nickname: None
•Colour: Blue
•Transmission/Engine: N/A and Not Much!
•Story: Inspired by the Grace Slick/Adam Ant commercials I decided to get one of these things. This was the only new vehicle I have ever owned. Was great for getting around - had to totally pay attention to the surface of the road however! And could park it anywhere!!! Had a terrible design flaw where the muffler was only attached to the scooter by a long thin pipe which cracked very easily when riding over a pothole. Must have bought 5 mufflers for the thing! Installed a joke "Ejector Seat" red button on the console. Wiped out once on slick metal rails on street once.
•Fate: Outlived its usefulness in my current transit-rich city. Sold it to a friend for $1 and it was towed away soon after he had it.
4) 1989 Isuzu Pickup
•Nickname: "Silver"
•Colour: you guessed it...Silver
•Transmission/Engine: Stickshift, V6 engine
•Story: First car I bought - had about 5,000 miles on it. The previous owners told me "it likes to go 70mph." They were right! Silver was a great truck and got me to The Racetrack in Death Valley...and back several times!
•Fate: In 2002 I put a "For Sale" sign on it and parked it in the street. It was only a matter of hours before some gardeners bought it with cash. I still have $1 of that money.
5) 1997 Ford Explorer
•Nickname: "The Cañyonero"
•Colour: Teal
•Transmission/Engine: Automatic, V-8 race-car engine, all-wheel drive.
•Story: My partner and I bought this slightly-used vehicle. We were big guys, and were planning to be shuttling other big guys around. It has been off-roading once. Was broken into twice - same window. The first time the thieves stole some clothes and missed the valuables. The second time the thief broke in to see what was in the big empty plastic container that holds up the back of the broken driver's seat and got NOTHING - not even the pennies in the glove compartment! Had its tire slashed once along with 5 other cars on the street - at least it wasn't personal!
•Fate: It lives on the street half-way across town from me. I drive it to work once every two weeks to avoid the tickets and towing from the street I park on.
6) What will the future bring?
I have no current plans for replacing The Cañyonero.
