Biggest Little Fur Con is the only other con I have scheduled right now. Hopefully I can get back to Califur or Campfire Tails at some point but I dont have any concrete plans to do so right now.

So yeah, that was totally this last weekend, wasn't it?

Ive been building up to this event for a year now, from the humble beginnings of "Pawfur" to the discussions at Califur of "hey wouldnt a furcon in reno be nice", to going up last thanksgiving and taking photos of suiters on the casino floor to promote the event.

Con recap goes as follows...

Left friday morning with my boyfriend, and we had a really nice drive up. We stopped at the Black Oak Restaurant in Vacaville for breakfast, and seriously, it was one of the best places Ive eaten at recently. We finally got there a little after noon, and went to check in. That went smoothly until ... I check my wallet up in the room, and my drivers license was gone! The clerk at the counter had checked it, and after that, I've no clue what happened. I checked with lost and found about a dozen times over the course of the weekend, and it was never recovered.

So, que sera sera. We went shopping with Skyler and Deia for Cy's birthday party, and that ate up a good chunk of the afternoon. After we got back, there really wasn't much space to relax before a birthday dinner for Cy, and his party, which ended up being fantastic! That was the first time I'd hosted a con room party, and the size of the room that we had was just perfect for it. We had plenty of drinks too, so there wasn't a problem. After that I popped down to another short party and hit the casino floor too. The hotel was pretty packed -- in addition to our event, there was a bunny keeper convention, an MMA fight on Saturday night, a Cinco De Mayo carnival, and of course two big televised sporting events (the Kentucky Derby and the Paquiao fight).

Saturday was a bit of a whirlwind...I got up, got my breakfast, and headed down to start my staffing duties on the fursuit lounge, and quickly I was drafted into running the con Fursuit Games, since well, there wasn't anyone else to run them apparently. We ended up thinking of a few things on the fly and overall I think it went off pretty well. And by pretty well, I mean a hilarious disaster, but then the fursuit games usually are! A few hours later was the fursuit parade, another big event for me, and I had to keep the lounge well hydrated and cooled. Again it seeems like everything went pretty well, and it was a big relief when it was over. After my staff shift was over, me and cy grabbed a quick dinner, and it was off to skyler's party, which was AMAZING! Big props to him. I went to another small party later on that night too.

Sunday was of course a chill out day -- the con was already winding down, and people were leaving, so honestly there wasnt much to do with the fursuit lounge. I ended up mainly just roaming the con area, sitting in the game room playing Castlevania, and even getting up on stage for a bit for some impromptu karaoke.

After some more hang out time with various folks on Sunday evening, we got up monday and leisurely went home, well sort of home. My boyfriend and I are still exiled in Concord due to the work on our place in Pleasanton, and that will probably be the case for a couple more weeks. But, que sera sera, that will work itself out soon.

I'd say the biggest pro's of the convention was the space itself -- I mean everything was there that you needed, and you never really had to leave the hotel for anything. And if you did, there were stores and restaurants just a few minutes away. Also, even though I didnt think I would, I really liked the con layout -- it was pretty much just a large open space for people to congregate in, and that made it really easy to find folks, instead of wandering hallways and rooms. Also, the game room was excellent, there was a lot to choose from, including a huge selection of classic games.

the biggest cons -- the hotel itself was really crowded due to the aforementioned events, so maybe having the con a week earlier might be a better idea for the future.

Can't wait until next year!

What's your goal(s) for the con this year?
To kick back and have more fun. I'm not staffing this year so that will eliminate a lot of the stress Ive had at FC the past few years. However I am hosting 2 panels so the con won't totally be without responsibility.

I got back late last night from Califur, so here's generally how it went ...

Travel: It was pretty painless, but the pace was a bit slow. Also, typical LA traffic made getting down to the con a bit frustrating. Thanks to some locals, I had an effective way out of the area now (and back again next time I go).

Hotel: I have absolutely no problems with the hotel; the rooms were nice, and the one or two interactions I had with the staff were fairly pleasant. A huge change from the last time I went to Califur at the Hyatt in 2008, where it really didn't even seem like they wanted us there.

Con Events: Honestly, I only attended one actual con function, and that was the fursuit parade. This was a treat to me because I got to wear Pucks the Badger and actually be in the parade! After being FC Parade lead last year, and helping out on a few other parades before that (as well as the countless other public parades I've done with critters by the bay), it was great to finally actually be in a parade at a con! Other than that, I didn't really attend any other events. I tried to go to the dance Friday night with 2 other friends, but showed up after it had let out. Saturday night, I fell asleep just after that dance had started. I would have liked to have gone to the dances, but honestly, with frolic happening every month (and indeed this upcoming weekend), the sense of urgency to attend a con dance just isn't quite there. ;)

Other con-related stuff: Registration was really good. Basically they had a kiosk where you could register at con, or if you pre-registered, you could bring your paperwork with you and move to the head of the line to the registration area. This went really well for me; I showed up to register at about 4 pm on Friday, walked right up to the booth, and had my badge in hand in less than 5 minutes. Even for the registration kiosks, the wait was not more than a few people deep. Big kudos to them for getting it right!! The dealers den was pretty good too, though the only thing I could afford was another badge from my friend Brown Wolf.

Socializing: This was the theme of the con (and I think the theme of the con for a lot of folks). I spent nearly the entire weekend in the company of various friends, whether it was in hotel rooms, out at dinner, or just bouncing around the hallways and lobby talking to people. As always, thats a lot of fun to me; I love seeing the familiar faces and chit chatting. And yet, being limited to only one weekend, it still didn't seem like enough time. Thats really where the 4-5 day cons are at the biggest advantage, at least for me.

Photos: Yeah I took some, but eh, I just wasn't in the mood for photography this weekend, so I think most of them turned out pretty poopy. Still I ended up with almost 70 photos from the weekend, which are here

Other stuff: One of the biggest themes for me personally this weekend was nostalgia. After all, Califur was the first furry con I'd ever attended in 2008, and it was great to see the drastic change between this weekend, and what went down 4 years ago. I had an infinitely better time this year than before. I was also really conflicted, because I hadn't been down to Orange County since that weekend in 2008, and I have family that lives in the area; I would have liked to have seen them, but goddammit, there just wasn't enough time in the weekend to do so, and that really tore me up. If only I had a job that allowed me to take an actual extended vacation, I would have been able to. It definitely helped with traveling down by car that I knew the area, but Im sure I was getting annoying with "oh I remember this shopping center, I saw a movie here in 1993" type stuff. I mean, we were only a few miles south of the house in Tustin where my grandma and uncles used to live. I wondered if the house was still as it was when I saw it last in 1996. But, there wasn't even enough time to go see it.

But as far as the con goes, I'm really glad I went, and had a fantastic time.

Oddly enough, the opposite situation from this time last year.

As much as Id really like to go, I think I'm going to cancel any plans to attend camp fire tails this yeah. This does make me pretty sad, as I had more fun there than I had in a long, long time. The Oregon crowd is amazing, and the event itself is epic.

I have already committed to going to Califur with a really good friend, and I'm really looking forward to that as well! But, I dont think my pocketbook can stand 2 vacations this summer. On top of that, I really want to get my job situation moving along, and I'm not going to be able to do that if I have a week long vacation scheduled 3 months out from now. Judging by how increasingly frustrated I am with my job lately, I'd really like to get out of there sooner rather than later, and if canceling a trip helps that, so be it.

So yeah....I'll be seeing some of you in So Cal, and hopefully see others in Oregon in 2013. :3

It was the summer of 1991, and we just gotten a cute tabby kitten that we named "Mindy" from the SPCA. We were looking at cats (again) an my mom saw this wonderful black kitten, and she had to hold him. When she picked him up, he started suckling and kneading on her shirt. She instantly fell in love, and we had another cat in our fold, "Mork". Shortly thereafter, Mindy passed away from a lung problem, and we got another (almost matching) tabby, Gizmo. Mork and Gizmo were best friends throughout the years, until 2003 when Gizmo died of kidney failure. Mork remained with me at my parents, and because of the loss of the other cat, he started gravitating towards me. I moved out in 2008, but left Mork behind. Today, at the age of 21, he "crossed the rainbow bridge" as my mom put it.

I refer to Further Confusion as the "furry new year", not just because the convention itself falls so close to the calendar new year (as well as chinese new year), but likewise, it was about this time of the year that I originally got into the fandom.

The con itself indeed was full of highs and lows -- planning the fursuit parade itself was a nightmare due to so many issues with possible routes popping up at the last minute, the most visible of them being what we dubbed "occupy volleyball", which nixed our plan of having the photo shoot in the main plaza of the convention center. Though ironically enough, I had wanted to do the photo shoot at Main Stage from the beginning, an idea that really no one else was hot on, yet thats what ended up happening, and it seemed to go over pretty well. Go figure. ;)

Overall the con went pretty well. The dances were fantastic, the panels went really well on my end (in spite of scheduling issues), and I got to meet and hang out with great people. There were some downsides, though I dont think I need to get into those here.

Once again, its the 23rd (well it *almost* is, just another 45 minutes away), and that means another birthday is here, and another year has passed. This has definitely been a watershed year of sorts, since moving in with my boyfriend was a pretty big step. Honestly we aren't exactly where we need to be just yet, but then that gives us something to work for in the near future, now doesn't it! For me, I'm going to find a new career. I've grown way too tired and stressed out at my current job which I've had for 5 and a half years now, and a change of venue is sorely needed. Beyond that, I might need to find a new career overall, but I feel in that sense I'm 18 again and I've no idea what I want to pursue.

But right now is a time for celebration and reflection -- I'll be 32 now. And just a few days after is Christmas, then a few days later, New Years, then a few more days after that, Further Confusion, which will be my 4th overall, and possibly last as a staff member. I'm not ragequitting or anything dramatic like that, it just seems like life has become exponentially complicated at times, and dealing with something like con volunteer work only makes things more difficult. I still enjoy the experience and may help again at some point, but I think I'm going to take a step or two back and just go back to being an attendee.

Also I hope to hit up a few more furry events next year. I'd love to go to Campfire Tails again, and I'm hoping possibly Califur is in the mix too. But again, a lot of that is dependent on getting the new job, which I hope can happen soon ...

OK, I'm a couple days late in posting this, but yeah, Campfire Tails was fantastic!

The best part of the weekend was...everything! The worst part of the weekend was...nothing!

OK seriously, high points -- hanging out at the waterfall swimming hole area, the very awkward Riley's Awkward Dance, the Water Gun fight, eating breakfast at the truck stop, and of course, bi-mart.

Low points -- there weren't too many, except the 7 blisters on my feet at the end of the week, and the fact that we left just a tad bit late on Monday, and I didnt get home until about 3 am.

Really, these guys put on a great event, and I love camping, so it was a perfect fit. Having gone on camping trips every year since I was about 6, this has to be one of the best ones.

Well, the only other con it looks like I'm slated to go to will be Campfire Tails in Oregon, and this one is a bit different since it is a camping con. I'm really looking forward to it!

Well, moving drained most of my financial resources, so I had to cancel Califur. However I am planning on going to Campfire Tails up in Oregon in August -- I just have to get a registration paid for, which I can hopefully do next pay period.

One big financial roadblock right now though is the fact that my old roommate and I had a dispute over my rental deposit. I guess that was to be expected, because he has a poor track record of those things, but still it doesn't make it any more right. At least my new place is considerably cheaper to live in.

For those that don't know -- yes it's true, I'm moving, and it's this weekend. Don't be worried, I'm not going far, from Hayward to Pleasanton, which is only about 10 or so miles further east. It will be a drag to not be quite as close to the main part of the bay area, but it will be nice moving into a much more affordable situation overall. Also, hopefully I can refocus my efforts in finding a job more towards the south-east part of the bay, rather than the north east part where I work now, so I can reach my goal of moving closer to the San Jose area eventually.

At least, thats what it is to me. Another year has passed in my relatively short life in this fandom, and once again I'm reminded why its the best thing that ever happened to me. Of course that doesn't mean its all roses and sunshine, but overall I am a much better person for having been here, than not.

It's just hard to believe it's already over! All that building up for an entire year, and within 5 all too short days, it's gone. But the good thing is, there's going to be one next year.

The Good:
Its on MLK Weekend, which my company takes off as a paid holiday, so I have one less vacation day to burn for the con.

I'll be on staff again this, but in a slightly reduced role, as I'm only Masquerade 2nd instead of Fursuit Lounge lead. This will mean that I won't be on call and working pretty much the entire time, and I'll get to enjoy things a little more. I'm also running the Mustelid Panel on Friday Afternoon.

I may have my own fursuit by the time the con rolls around, but we'll see. At the very least, I've got a room on the fursuit floor, which makes things really handy.

It's just over a month now until FC too!

The Bad:
Ive got only one paid vacation day total left until March, so while I will get the Monday of the con off as a holiday, I will only be able to take one additional day off, which means I may not even be at the con at all until that Friday, and I don't get my Tuesday recoup day either.

I'm fairly broke right now, and I'll have to make this an extremely cheap con, so I probably won't be getting much in the way of art or comics.

While I'm not running the fursuit lounge, my gut tells me somehow some way I'm going to still be running it to a degree (in fact I kind of already am).

It's just over a month now until FC too.
