I've had a rough few years of basically trying full-time to recover from extended mental health problems, caused in large part by constant financial insecurity and business stress. I came to the conclusion recently that commission work isn't helping my situation any more, so I've started looking for more traditional full time jobs. As far as decisions go, it threw me for a loop with how inevitable it felt, especially as professional art has been my life for the last decade, at least.

I'll be finishing up the YCH auctions and then closing down shop as far as commissions go. Hopefully having a day job to support myself will help me find my way back into art for its own enjoyment - even now I've been more fulfilled by hobbycraft than digital art for the last few years.
I won't be leaving the online art scene, on the contrary my hope is that taking this new direction will help me heal creatively and breathe some new life into the stories I still have in my heart.

From the very beginning, actually. The previous draft started in 2017 during my second year of university, so I never really had the chance to devote more than the bare minimum attention to it. I'll leave the pages in this gallery for posterity and reference, but between how much my/our art style has changed, the fact that the current run spans a huge hiatus, and some small but important changes to the chapter 1 script, I'm ready to start actually running an active webcomic now that I don't have tertiary studies or a crushing start-up business eating all of my time.

We'll be starting with a 5 page look test to soften the blow of the prologue being a huge punch in the dick. Smiler is a long story with measured pacing, but I don't want it to be so grim that it's a chore to read. So: some light character building exercise to get back into the practice of making comics at all, and to remind me why I love these characters and the art form so much.

Working full time on art has always been my main end goal for a life/career, so expect Patreon announcements in the future as well, once I'm satisfied that we can maintain a consistent update and content schedule. With how quickly we can work now, especially with some tactical style choices for efficiency, I'm confident that we'll be able to balance comic work with regular commissions.

I've removed the order limit on commissions at the moment, since I'm on full time and actively trying to get work. It'll be a First Come; First Served basis type deal, and I'll simply cap my hours per day so that I don't accidentally myself a 16h shift and then end up burnt out next day.

I have space for 5 bust commissions per week at the moment, to save room for bigger/monthly commission slots. Starting in June, I'll be offering full body and pair/group commission slots in the flavours of shaded sketch, flat inks, and full render.

My focus moving forward will be mainly comics and professional self-development - I'm aiming to branch into animation and voice acting as well, which are things I've studied/trained in and wanted to explore my whole life. To keep funds up, I'll be able to take on maybe one commission a week, specifically pinups or character/costume designs. If anyone is interested in adoptables, I'll be testing those waters as well.

OKAY shit's suddenly gotten very real, I'm expecting to be grotesquely busy with my startup very, very soon.
So, going forward, I plan to knock out the last three commissions I have left to finish and, with all the fun I've been having pottering away at the Smiler stuff in my meagre spare time, I'm so ready to start updating it again.
Rather than start it from scratch, I decided that the most productive way forward would be a soft reboot: a couple of small scene injections to bring the current page library up to speed with the script updates, an announcement to prepare for style/design changes, and then business as usual.
After doing some R&D on the script, I've made a shitload of progress actually nailing down a proper structure, and tightening up the character/plot arcs. At the very least, I have minimum four or five chapters worth of story broken down, so plenty of wiggle room to properly develop the middle and end while updates happen.

On the commission front, I'm going to have to take reservations rather than orders. I'll just be entirely too busy to promise any sort of timely return, so instead, I'll ask people to express interest in a future order, and put your contact deets on a waitlist for when I have some time spare.

On that note, if you'd like me to put you on the "expressed interest" list, let me know! You don't even necessarily have to have a clear idea of what you want, we can always work that out when the time comes :3

Hey again! Here's another update, quick and dirty:

1) the comic for my publisher is finished, expect a kickstarter announcement soon~!
2) I have a design document due to my boss by the end of this week, which is what I've been working on. It's high-priority and time sensitive, so I have to focus my attention on that until it's done.
3) Afterwards, I'm going to focus on knocking out the last of my overdue commissions - there's one big one, a medium one, then a handful of sketches, so it shouldn't take me long at all.

COMMISSION STATUS GOING FORWARD
I highly, highly doubt I'll be able to have any sort of "open" status for the foreseeable future, due to my workload. I do still want to do commissions though, so what I have in mind is this:
Rather than scooping up bulk orders and inundating myself again, I'm thinking of taking reservations. I'll put up dates for people to claim, then contact the commissioner on each date to ask for details and payment.
That way, I don't have a swarm of unmet obligations stressing up my brain, and you all aren't stuck waiting on a picture you paid for months ago ._.

First off, I hope everyone is staying safe and responsible during the actual biblical apocalypse. Seriously, first it was three solid months of the worst bushfires my country has ever seen, then it was floods, then hail, then dust storms, now a plague...
Just waiting on the locusts, and my shipment of lamb's blood. Better safe than sorry.

ANYwho, for those of you still (STILL) waiting on a commission for me, sing along: Thank you for your patience, sorry for the delay, I am working on them... it's just been very slow going.
I'll expand a bit on why:

First and foremost, my priorities list has necessarily been flooded with the responsibilities associated with my current job as head of the art department for a start-up company. Between designing the look of the website, training the artists under me, building style guides and lesson plans, assigning and QCing work... I'm pretty swamped.
This is in no way an attempt to shirk my obligations to the people who've ordered work from me - just an explanation of why it's taking so long.

Secondly, the comic I still owe to my publisher. The kickstarter will be launching some time in the next month, and I still have pages to finish. The extremely tight deadline for this one means that I've also had to prioritise it over my commission work, not the least of which because I'm not the only one involved - it's an anthology project, with several other writer/artist teams on board, and I don't want to hold them up.

So, TL;DR: I have three full time jobs and only so many hours in the day. I haven't forgotten my responsibilities, or my obligations to my commissioners, to whom I will always be deeply thankful.
