Regarding FA Mods and So-Called "Arbitrary" Decisions
Posted 2 years agoJesus H Christ, can people PLEASE just operate from the MOST BASIC PREMISE that FurAffinity moderators and administrators have...
1. A set of rules that must be followed.
2. A standard of impartiality.
3. Basic human decency.
At the very least let's go with #1, and that no, mods CAN'T just up and decide that they don't like something and declare it verboten.

Most Recent TOS Update
Posted 2 years agoSo FA made an update to their policies regarding minors in sexual situations.
And some people are in an uproar. My response to this?
January 16, 2005 - 12:05PM - FurAffinity launched.
January 16, 2005 - 12:26PM - Changes to TOS made.
January 16, 2005 - 12:26:30PM - "This is going to pretty much kill the site."
And yet, here we are.
It's May 19, 2023 - 14:02PM, and FurAffinity is still here, through hundreds of changes that everyone said were going to pretty much kill the site, and it's not only still here, it's thriving and growing every single day.
Anyway.
I've read the policy change, and I really don't have a problem with it. If anything, I would argue it should have been in place back in 2005.

Generation Gap, and How The Fandom Isn't Your Therapist
Posted 3 years agoOne of the things that we "Grey Muzzles" were supposed to do, is advise the young'uns when they get to acting stupid. And when the stupidity goes to eleven, we'd usually smack them on the muzzle with a suspension of some kind. Then someone would reach out and coach them on how to be a nicer person.
Often times, it was just that they either have zero socialization, or they are on the spectrum and need time to learn how to overcome that part of their biology. Often times, it was both.
But a few things have happened in the last 10-15 years.
1. Everyone is completely overworked, to the point where nobody has any time, or mental energy, to do those kinds of things anymore. So people are extremely selective with who they choose to spend their time with, and/or who they expend energy upon. So anyone with few social skills, or those on the spectrum, get shoved out the door and left to cope on their own. With results that YOU get to see in your comments and Discord.
2. All the older furries who might have had time, or energy, to help those people, have all been burned out. We aren't getting paid to be a therapist, and most of the time, we ain't qualified to do it anyway. And with all these layoffs, losing our homes, losing family members to diseases both political and biological, sometimes BOTH, we are just fucking DONE with other people's shitty behavior.
3. The young people are also done with our shit. We, the older generation, have pretty much failed the younger generation. Whatever it might have been; crappy political choices, crappy financial choices, crappy social choices - the world ain't in the best of shape, and young people's prospects ain't looking good for the next decade, let along the next 100 years. So if we Grey Muzzles might have had any advice to help the new kids fit in, it's understandable if they aren't inclined to listen.
4. Honestly? 99% of the kids DON'T need our advice. They're actually doing pretty good, figuring out how to be a decent person, and flat-out refusing to take any shit from people who want to keep things the way they are.
But that 1%...
Whoof.
Ostracized from their peer group for shitty behavior, nobody with the time or energy to coach them, and no reasonable prospects going forward?
Yeah, that ain't gonna go well. Not at all.

From Here On Out...
Posted 3 years ago...when a gun crazy talks about how many guns they have, we no longer refer to them by their given/chosen name.
We refer to them as "Loot Drop".
As in, instead of saying, "Okay, Boomer," we say, "Okay, Loot Drop."
Mind you, people who own guns are NOT automatically gun crazies. They have to meet certain criteria, first.
1. Claim to have lots of guns. (Especially if they post pictures of them on their social media or here on FA.)
2. Claim to be a patriot.
3. State that they are expecting to use those guns to fight/attack (X demographic) in a civil war.
It's important that they meet all three criteria! Lots of people can belong to the first two groups, and not be a gun crazy. They're just folks who like things that go BANG! in safe settings, like a gun or artillery range. (Because seriously, who doesn't like the THUMP! of a Browning 50 caliber dropping rounds downrange?)
No, they need to meet all three.
So if you run into anyone who meets all three, their new name is "Loot Drop".
Because when they lose their shit, and start some shit, that's exactly what they're going to be.

And Nothing Of Value Was Lost - Kiwi Farms
Posted 3 years agoSAN FRANCISCO — Reversing course under growing public pressure, major tech security company Cloudflare announced Saturday that it will stop protecting the Kiwi Farms website, best known as a place for stalkers to organize hacks, online campaigns and real-world harassment.
Cloudflare Chief Executive Matthew Prince, who this past week published a lengthy blog post justifying the company’s services defending websites such as Kiwi Farms, told The Washington Post he changed his mind not because of the pressure but a surge in credible violent threats stemming from the site.
“As Kiwi Farms has felt more threatened, they have reacted by being more threatening,” Prince said. “We think there is an imminent danger, and the pace at which law enforcement is able to respond to those threats we don’t think is fast enough to keep up.”
Prince said contributors to the forum were posting home addresses of those seen as enemies and calling for them to be shot.
After Cloudflare’s move, visitors to Kiwi Farms were greeted by this message: “Due to an imminent and emergency threat to human life, the content of this site is blocked from being accessed through Cloudflare’s infrastructure.”
In a post on Telegram, Kiwi Farm’s founder, Josh Moon, said Cloudflare made its decision “without any discussion” and said he had not been contacted by law enforcement about threats on the site. “It’s early morning hours here,” the post said. “My thoughts will be articulated better in the morning.”
Kiwi Farms launched in 2013 and quickly grew into a popular internet forum for online harassment campaigns. At least three suicides have been tied to harassment stemming from the Kiwi Farms community, and many on the forum consider their goal to drive their targets to suicide. Members of the LGBTQ community and women are frequent targets.
Cloudflare has faced broad backlash in the past week as a campaign for it to drop the service gained steam and widened to pressure paying customers to drop Cloudflare if it held firm. The company says it provides some services, mostly for free, that protect nearly a fifth of all internet traffic.
On Aug. 24, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called for Kiwi Farms to be taken down after she was swatted by a person claiming to be affiliated with the site. “Isn’t it concerning that such a website exists?” Greene said in an interview with Newsmax. “That website needs to be taken down. There should be no business or any kind of service where you can target your enemy."
It was around then that the company stopped selling Kiwi Farms a $20 per month service to customize error messages shown to web users when its pages wouldn’t load. On Saturday, it withdrew the remaining free services, which fend off denial-of-service attacks and speed content delivery by making copies of the site in many locations.
Clara Sorrenti, a trans Canadian Twitch streamer known online as Keffals, launched the #DropKiwiFarms campaign after being targeted by Kiwi Farms posters for over half a year.
Forum users had repeatedly doxed Sorrenti and her family, posting addresses and more, and last month they called in false crime reports to draw police to her home in “swatting” attacks. Sorrenti fled to Northern Ireland late last month, and within 48 hours users of the forum had pinpointed her location and she began receiving threats.
On Saturday, she spoke with The Post just minutes after police had arrived at her residence after another swatting attempt.
“There are countless people suffering because of this website,” Sorrenti said. “Kiwi Farms isn’t about free speech, it’s about hate speech. The majority of the content on the site is threads used for targeted harassment against political targets.”
Sorrenti’s campaign against Cloudflare went viral in the past several days, with organizations and influencers joining in the call to ban Kiwi Farms from Cloudflare’s service. The Anti-Defamation League called Kiwi Farms an “extremist-friendly forum that has been the breeding ground for countless harassment campaigns.”
In the interview, Prince said he was uncomfortable dropping Kiwi Farms despite its content and would have preferred to have done so only in response to a court order.
But he said it was an easier call than his previous decisions to drop neo-Nazi site the Daily Stormer and the 8chan website because those two were not hotbeds for specific violent plots.
In a post Wednesday, Prince and another executive had written that they saw providing basic security and caching services as infrastructure, like internet connectivity, and should not be held responsible for content without judicial proceedings. They contrasted that with website hosting, which they said should have increased responsibility and discretion.
Prince said Saturday he stands by that reasoning, and he wrote in a new post that dropping Kiwi Farms was a “dangerous” decision. He added in the interview that it might provoke forum users to escalate even more, and that the forum would likely reappear online with help from Cloudflare competitors.
“This may largely kick the problem down the road and worse, might even escalate as the posters at Kiwi Farms feel attacked,” Prince told The Post.
Some technology experts supported Cloudflare’s resistance to acting. Daphne Keller, director of the Program on Platform Regulation at Stanford’s Cyber Policy Center, cited recent arm-twisting at Facebook by the current government of India over content from political opponents.
“The question is, which parts of the technical `stack’ of the internet are supposed to be neutral, which ones are supposed to moderate content, and is there some intermediate set of obligations that should apply to the middle layers?” Keller told The Post.
But a large swath of technologists disagreed with the previous stance. On Friday, Stanford University’s Alex Stamos wrote on Twitter that the position to keep serving Kiwi Farms was “not tenable.”
Cloudflare's position on KF is not tenable and I believe that their leadership, employees, shareholders and the rest of the world would be better off if they proactively recognized that. — Alex Stamos (@alexstamos) September 3, 2022
“Soon a doctor, activist or trans person is going to get doxxed and killed or a mass shooter is going to be inspired there. The investigation will show the killer’s links to the site, and Cloudflare’s enterprise base will evaporate,” Stamos wrote.
Prince said in the interview he couldn’t provide the number of new threats he had seen on Kiwi Farms, but he said they had escalated rapidly alongside the criticism of the forum. He said the company had shared specifics with the FBI and law enforcement in the United Kingdom and Australia, but that none of those agencies had asked him, even informally, to drop Kiwi Farms.
Broader concerns about violent organizing online have been climbing for years, accelerating after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Law enforcement and intelligence warnings have also pointed to potential violence around the November elections, or even sooner, as former president Donald Trump has compared the FBI and other institutions to organized crime.
Incitement by others online over gender issues has inspired recent threats against children’s hospitals.
Moon, Kiwi Farm founder, is a former administrator of 8chan, a forum popularized by followers of the QAnon extremist ideology. After hosting a video of the Christchurch mosque shootings in 2019 that killed 51, New Zealand internet service providers blocked Kiwi Farms after Moon denied a police request for information on posts related to the shooting.
Last July, Kiwi Farms was booted from its domain registrar, DreamHost, following the suicide of a software developer called Near, who was a longtime target of the site’s user base.
“Like many trans people coming out as having been targeted by this site, I too was targeted by Kiwifarms,” Erin Reed, a trans activist and content creator, tweeted on Saturday. “They showed up at my local courthouse to grab my divorce files. They posted Google images of my house. They try to scare trans people into silence.”
But Chelsea Manning, a trans activist, offered a more nuanced opinion. “I don’t think long term the solution to this kind of dangerous speech is to ask hosting providers to have to take these things down," she told The Post. "We need a more balanced and measured long-term approach.”

Gun Laws of the Last 60 Years
Posted 3 years agoFirst off, we don't need any new laws. We have plenty. We have over 60 years of gun laws that would work flawlessly if they were allowed to function.
But see, that's how it works.
Here's what's going to happen:
1. The GOP is going to resist any new laws being made.
2. The Dems will fight like crazy to get new laws made.
3. The public will sit in the stands, watching the catfight in the arena.
4. After sufficient monkey dust has been flung around the arena, both sides will reach a "compromise."
5. A new law will be "agreed" upon. It will look useful! It will look bipartisan! It will be shiny!
And just as has been done for the last 40 years, here's how it will work:
1. It will not get one single penny of funding. Not one. Zilch. Nada. Zip.
2. It will be ((( {{ << EXPLICITLY FORBIDDEN >> }} )))) from meshing with any other existing laws or legislation. It will be required to stand completely on it's own. It will be a single law, on a legal island in the middle of a legislative ocean, with nothing for thousands of miles.
As has been done with every gun law for the last fourty years.
Gun registry? All paper. Not one computer.
Background checks? Computerized, but based on software that uses 5.25 inch floppies. And because there's no funding for any of it, there's no money to standardize anything. Each state has their own system from the 90's using MS-DOS, and it doesn't integrate with any federal system, or any other state system.
Your nice, shiny new law will get dumped on the heap, just like every other gun law that has been made in the last 40 years.
(((( {{ << EXCEPT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >> }} ))))
Except...
...when used as a threat for charging suspects and coercing plea deals.
That's it.
That's the only time any gun law ever gets dragged out of the basement and dusted off. And the victim will always be a PoC.
So yay.
Hooray for your shiny new law. Whooooo. Yay.
Oh, wait, we don't have one yet. But don't worry? We will. Like I said, the politicians have to grind some more victims into enough monkey dust to make for a good show, but they'll deliver.
They always do.
And like the NIMBY No-New-Taxes fools we are, both sides will be happy with the show.
But see, that's how it works.

Awesome Music For Dealing With Nazis!
Posted 3 years ago"First of all, I want to thank you for your words and support. I see a lot of activity on my and other UA dark scene musicians' Bandcamp pages, on radio programs, playlists & digests, etc. I see your proposals to make a compilation to collect donations. I am open to participating in any of them. All funds that I’m receiving from sales of my music are sent to volunteer organizations and humanitarian aids."
"That’s pretty hard to compose something from scratch right now. I have some demos for my future release and with my friend poet and hip-hop artist Stepan Burban aka Палiндром we decided to use one of them to create a 'cry from the heart' of every Ukrainian citizen during a nightmare that we currently living in. In between volunteering and air raid sirens, Stepan wrote and performed lyrics for this track that we called 'Sleep'.
The original lyrics are in Ukrainian.
СПИ (Sleep) by Ship Her Son
English translation:
Go away to your home while it still exists
The dove of peace eats your leftovers
You are not fit even to be a fertilizer here
Hell is closer, you’ll be taken there
Take your children's bodies while you still have money
They will end soon
Dare to look at least once in our eyes
A second before death
Your horde is just after the bursa, military courses
Took place online, the internet was down
Russian meat leftovers up to Kursk
Flying to the plates with shchi, delicious, right?
Go home while you still have legs
While you still have something to raise the white flag
Return to your poor land
Or go to bed
Sleep, sleep, sleep
Fall asleep on oak forests and steeps
Eternally on the land of my ancestors
And my heroes of today
We are all together now as never before
Go away to your home
Your Russian rusty shackles
Are falling apart
All your plans are falling apart
Your fucking orcs are falling apart
Tourniquets in their first aid kits are falling apart
Glory to my heroes

Tourniquets in their first aid kits are falling apart

Tips on how to survive a war zone as a civilian, from Sarajevo survivor
First of all, you need to snap out of the initial shock. If you are in Ukraine right now, you ARE in a war zone. I know that it is hard to imagine right now. The park that you enjoyed yesterday might be a a deadly killing field tomorrow once a sniper takes up a position in the building where you had ice-cream as a kid. If you aren't in survival mode already, the sooner you engage it, the better your chances. Grab what you can. Leave the rest behind, your stuff is not worth dying for.
Running
Running is the preferred option. You are now a war refugee, you have special rights. Even if you don't have a passport on you, just cross the border - at a checkpoint or by jumping a fence. Country that you eventually settle in will issue a special two-striped passport to you Refugee travel document .
Problem with running is that it makes vulnerable, if you are near the front line simply being in a moving vehicle will make you a target. Or you will get shelled or stopped/shot at a checkpoint. Either do it before it gets to this point, or don't do it at all.
Asses what kind of hardware you see around you:
Fast jets, missiles - Front line is far away, run.
Helicopters, especially transport ones - Decision point, if you don't go right now you will need to stay put.
Shelling or mortar fire - Front line is less than 20 km from you. It isn't safe to be out anymore. Go into a basement and hunker down during the day. Unlike cruise missile attacks (there have been multiple today so far), shelling is persistent and lasts for hours or days.
Armoured vehicles - You are in occupied territory. There will be checkpoints on the roads. Depending on their orders you might get turned around or just shot on sight.
The situation can change in hours. Just because it was safe to go out before you fell asleep, it doesn't mean it will be safe when you wake up.
Staying put
Your priorities are as follows:
Shelter. Basements in low rise buildings are ideal. You want to be out of sight, preferably in a place where a shell can explode on a higher floor and not bury you.
Water. Fill up whatever containers you have with it. Once the electricity dies, your mains water will to. If there is snow outside, harvest it.
Fuel. Whatever it takes to stay warm and melt snow. Coal or wood is preferable.
Food. Lowest on the priority list, but it will be first thing you will think of. Things above will kill you much sooner than starvation. Most of the time your morale will actually break before that point, hunger does really shitty things to people.
Russian forces are unlikely to have orders to massacre civilians, this doesn't mean that the 19 year old at the right end of a gun won't get trigger happy on you. Stay out of sight.
Ukrainian government is apparently distributing weapons, having one for protection (as opposed to fight) is an extremely bad idea. It will make you an instant and legitimate target for any troops you might come across.
Stay safe, wherever you all are.
EDIT: Just to repeat what others are saying. Polish border is open and refugee camps are being set up. Claims that it is closed is fake news.

Dear Ukrainians!
I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed.
It's a lie.
If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid.
Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: www.ua.gov.pl
Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now.
EDIT: YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!!
EDIT2: as a proof that you no longer need visa:
• in Ukrainian https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina---ua • in English https://www.gov.pl/web/udsc/ukraina-en
EDIT3: I have been permanently banned from r/worldnews for posting this, for no reason. I don’t care about the ban as long as we have the opportunity to save lives, but this is unnecessary
EDIT 4: I have unconfirmed information saying that you can pass polish border even without passport. Your ukrainian ID is enough.
EDIT 5: It's confirmed that you can also take your pet with you without additional papework which normally would be required to cross the border of EU/Poland. https://www.wetgiw.gov.pl/main/aktu.....ow-weterynaryjnych-dla-psow-kotow-i-fretek/idn:1999

Posted 3 years agoThis was my response to a thread on Reddit about how Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is about to collapse.

Do you want to know something that won't appear in any history books, or official accounts, but most probably happened?
In the depths of the Great Depression, the rich conspired with former general Smedley Butler to stage a coup d'etat and take over the country.
It was called The Business Plot.
That part definitely happened, this much we know. But I have a theory as to what came next.
I like to imagine that Roosevelt had a nice, private chat with the organizers of the putsch, and laid out how things were going to happen from that point, going forward.
The wealthy were going to latch their lips to his polio-flaccid penis and agree to every single program and law behind The New Deal.
No questions, no arguments, no hesitation.
They can howl and bark as much as they like in public, but their accountants are going to sign every single check that comes across their ledgers.
If they obey, they turn a ridiculous profit in 20-40 years.
If they don't, then the press will be provided ALL the evidence, he will nationalize the banks and more importantly, the stock exchanges, and mobilize the national guard.
With specific orders to protect the state capitols, and nothing else.
No protection for the banks.
No protection for the stock exchanges.
No protection for the mansions.
No protection for the private properties.
Martha's Vineyard, Mackinac Island, the Hamptons: all will be left to the justice of the common people.
Again, this is pure speculation and nonsense. Never happened, and no way to prove it even if it did.
But I find it very interesting that The New Deal became such a resounding success, with such widespread support, a scant six months after the putsch was exposed.
++++++++++++
I find myself greatly angered and frustrated that nobody in the Whitehouse or the Department of Justice is having similar theoretical conversations with the wealthy and powerful. As the Joker said, "What happened? Did your balls drop off? Hm?"

Dear Dragoneer
Posted 3 years agoFor Christmas, I would like filters on FurAffinity, so I can block out images with specific tags.
I know that people have lots and lots of fetishes, and that's okay.
But just because they have those fetishes, doesn't mean I want to see them.
So if I could please be able to filter out #fart #fat #scat #cub and #watersports, just to name a few, that would be a lovely Christmas present.

No, really. We actually generate our own heat.
I guess that explains why nobody can snuggle up to me in bed for very long? I start out nice and cool, but not long after, they're all like, "Mmnooo, g'way, too hot."

2nd Vaccine Shot
Posted 4 years agoGot my second Pfizer shot this Friday.
I planned it this way, because I figured I'd get a little sick.
I wasn't wrong. Nothing serious, just a low-grade fever, achy, feeling like someone switched my transmission to 4-Lo but forgot to put the hubs in. Lots of engine noise, but also lots of not going anywhere. Meh, I always get sick from vaccinations. The only one that doesn't really bother me, is the seasonal influenza. When I was military, the one I hated the most, was Typhoid. Holy Jesus, that one would pole-axe me between the eyes and drop me like a rock for two days. When I was a kid, I needed a Tetanus booster, but all they had on hand was DPT, so they gave me that.
That...was an UN-FUN weekend spent locked to the couch.
Oddly enough, I didn't have any reaction to the Anthrax vaccine, but I only got one dose of that before they cancelled the whole program. I consider myself lucky. Getting my Smallpox vaccination in 06 was fun! I'd read Richard Preston's "Demon In The Freezer", so I knew what I was getting into. They dip a bi-furicated needle into a soup of live virus, then jab your arm 15 times with the needle. OHMYGOD that scab ITCHES!!! And you can't touch it for 2 weeks, else you'll spread the pustules, so you can't scratch.
But yeah. Feeling blergh. Figured this would happen, did it anyway, because duh, I don't feel like dying, thank you very much. I've been wearing a mask in public since March 2020 when this shit got really scary, so I'm not going to miss my chance for the lifeboat. Let the deniers and GQP cleanse themselves from the gene pool, thank you very much.
In the meantime...blergh.

Bravery
Posted 4 years agoThere's how brave you think you are?
And then there's how brave you are when the doctor is going to your "back door" with a pointy scalpel to cut open a thrombosed hemorrhoid.
And when you think you've got that figured out?
Now you have to determine out how brave you are when you have to poop.

Current Events: This Is Far From Over
Posted 4 years agoThis is far from over, and is only getting started.
I posted this response to some random trumpist on Reddit, who was calling everyone assholes for making fun of the woman who got shot trying to enact a coup, but I think it would be good to share it here, as well.

Well, you're just going to have to get used to it, fascist scum. We have tolerated your garbage for the last 50 years, trying to be tolerant of evil voices because 1st Amendment. We tried debate, we tried meeting you in the middle, we tried appealing to your common sense, your morality, your religion, your sense of decency.
All we wanted from you and your ilk was for you to treat people the way you want to be treated.
But no. Apparently that's too much to ask for.
You want to be special.
You want your false, twisted religion to be the law of the world. You want to hurt anyone who isn't of that religion, or your ethnicity, or nationality, and you don't want to suffer even the expectation that you'll even be called out for your hateful and malicious behavior, let alone prosecuted.
You monsters don't just want total impunity.
What galls the rest of the human race, is that you EXPECT total impunity. As if your skin color and religion granted it to you at birth.
Well.
Allow me to speak on behalf of the majority of the human race, who don't share your views, and tell you, with the utmost respect and sincerity...
Fuck you.
Fuck you.
Fuck you.
Your panicked flailing towards the vague ideal of being allowed to spew your toxins in the name of free speech has NEVER been anything but the enraged howling of a rabid dog, chewing at the bars of a cage of their own design and manufacture.
But we have to thank you as well?
You are the failed aspect of The Great American Experiment.
And never in the last 100 years have Americans had such a pure, unadulterated view of failure inside their own country.
To the shame of every decent human being, we clung desperately to the ideal of tolerance and free speech, but at the cost of our souls and our freedom.
But no more.
You and your ilk are cancer.
You and your ilk are tumors, sucking on the lifeblood of our republic.
And here, when our guardians FINALLY choose to uphold the law...
...only now, do you point and scream in terror at the sight of the surgeon's scalpel of the republic, descending to excise you from the body politic.
So yes.
Thank you for your service.
You and your ilk have finally opened the eyes of the decent people of our nation, and they are rolling up their sleeves in preparation for the ungodly amount of your shit that they are going to have to shovel out of their homes, their lives, their government, their religion and their minds.
And once again,
Fuck you.
Fuck you.
Fuck you.

"Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. — In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.” Karl Popper - 1945

And if this revelation makes you leave the furry fandom, then so much the better.

So I'm playing on SecondLife, because I don't have a first life after all, and I notice some other bats hanging out. My character is a bat, of course, so I talk to them a bit. They're very quiet, a bit shy, and not at all talkative.
It turns out they're Russian.
I know a few words of Russian, and I know how to use Google Translate -which has actually gotten very good these last few years- so I start some conversation in Russian.
The other players I was talking with get bored and wander off, since they can't be arsed to translate back and forth, but I am determined to make friends, dammit!
Angel actually shelled out good money for translation software, which takes what he types in Cyrillic, and translates it to English. In contrast, I have to bounce back and forth between Google Translate, but I'm not about to let that stop me.
And so I make a new friend.
There is a vast world out there, full of people, places and things to see, hear, touch, smell and taste. Most will never go beyond their own city. But I have seen the world once before, and I wish to see more of it.
Perhaps one day I will see Russia? That would be a good day, indeed.
Они (не) застенчивы. Они русские, и не говорят по-английски.

BWAAARRRGH! THE MONSTER COMES ASHORE!
Posted 8 years agoRegarding Nazis, Hate Speech and the new FA Code of Conduct
Posted 8 years ago"There's better ways of preventing people from listening to them than censorship. "
You are absolutely right. There is.
Because let's be 100% clear. From 1946 to the present, we have had tens of thousands of doctors of every profession analyze, deconstruct and break down every single aspect of Nazi ideology. All the way from the wooby-woo-woo-woo hunt for the Spear of Longinus, to the construction of the Autobahn.
Your contemporary Nazi, neo or otherwise, did not grow up in a test tube, a box of plastic peanuts, or at the bottom of a well. They grew up in a world where the truth of the Nazis and their government, philosophy and politics were on full display. They saw the films, the videos, the pictures and the documentaries, and they said...
"Yay! That's for me!"
And it would not be difficult to divorce the genocide from the politics and philosophy. Not hard at all! The various political parties around the world do it every single day!
But they aren't.
For them, genocide isn't a bug, it's a feature.
So no.
No free speech for Nazis. No free speech, no platform, no tolerance.
I will support maintaining the semblance of law and order, and not actively seek them out for assassination? But any more than that, I will not give.
Send them back to hiding in their holes.

Macro Logic
Posted 9 years agoI've often wondered about the whole macro fetish. I mean, sure, I suppose I can see the micro thing? Being tiny? Whatever.
But macro? Twenty, fifty, one-hundred feet tall monsters?
On an emotional level, I simply don't get it. Except that the character is a ruthless bully who likes to kill people. That much I can figure out, but trying to figure out the rationale is...well...it just ain't there. Unless I simply assume that the character is a ruthless bully. Then it all makes perfect sense.
On a logical level, it just simply does not compute. Ordinary ground would become quicksand as the shock of their footfalls causes liquefaction of the soil and ground water. They wouldn't be able to go within a mile of any river, bay or ocean, unless the ground were solid bedrock. That's not even taking into account that the physics of taking that step with a bipedal body would shatter every bone in the foot, followed by a compound spiral fracture of the lower legs.
And should fifteen tons of flesh and bone trip and fall from 50 feet high? You're gonna be hitting the ground at or around 40 MPH, with an energy of 2143456 Joules.
That's not just *BOOM!*, that's more *WHA-PPTTHHBBBTTHBTHTB*, where your flesh and bones simply trans-substantiate into hamburger.
And finally, on a practical level?
Bullets.
Sorry, unless you're a Japanese folk monster that's very popular with the Saturday morning crowd, then no, you just have skin. Not scales, no rubbery knobs of body armor, just plain old skin.
Bullets are going to feel to a macro, rather like Giant Japanese Hornets feel to us.
And if you start catching rounds from a high-powered rifle? It's only going to get worse. Much worse. Just because the bullet is tiny, doesn't mean it's not carrying a metric fuck-ton of force behind it. Catching a .243 to the ankle is going to bring you down.
Let's not even get into a .50 BMG.
But hey, let's just say that bullets only sting, and don't do much damage. That leaves fragmentation grenades, claymores, anti-tank mines, RPGs, ATGMs, TOWs, 20mm chain guns? And we're not even into air-to-ground missiles, such as the Hellfire, or things like the Exocet, Tomahawk or others.
Believe it or not, National Guard depots really do have those things down in the armory. So a sudden macro rampaging through the city has about 20 minutes of Happy Fun Time before the Death Clock starts ticking. Because that's how long it takes for F-16s to spin up and take off.
That's when they bring the rain.
And no, that's *not* "just Hollywood."
In fact, the Hollywood version is Rated-G compared to the real thing.
So yeah.
Macros.
Big, ego-stroking killer bullies.
Not a fan.

We are now TWO WEEKS OUT! In two weeks, the Thanksgiving Feast will be here, and as usual, the menu is looking a bit thin!
Time to start baking those noodles and thinking about what you want to bring to the feast! Check out the Meetup Group for the comments, and check back, here, too! Tell everyone what you'll be bringing, so we don't get duplications!
And most of all, be sure to click on the menu, and add your updates there! Facebook isn't reliable for getting the word out, so don't reply to this post with what you're bringing? Add it to the menu!

Rainfurrest Post Mortem - A Post From The Chair Himself
Posted 9 years agoWow.
No, really. Just...wow.
I thought that the con didn't use enough legal muscle to convince the hotel not to break their contract? Turns out they probably had to use all the legal muscle they had to remain incorporated without getting sued into poverty.
People like to say that Uncle Kage acts like a dictator? But let this be a lesson: dictatorship works sometimes. Sam has kept his convention clean, and has never hesitated to use the Nuclear Option on attendees who didn't get the message the first time. Consequently, they're the biggest and most successful furry convention in the world.
