Paperfold game!
Posted 8 years agoOver the last few afternoons I've been playing the paperfold game via drawpile with HarryBCD , Reserate , RockwellFox (though not necessarily all at once) and a few others not on FA. The results are pretty entertaining and so I thought I'd share them with everyone else.
Each image is a separate session with a different color for each player. Then each column in a particular image is its own thing, with each doodle or sentence being an attempt at doodling or writing the sentence or drawing above it without seeing the rest of the canvas (everyone is zoomed in on a single square and scrolls diagonally to simulate passing and folding actual paper).
Anyway, here you guys go:

Some random updates
Posted 8 years agoHey guys, I realized I haven't posted a journal in a while, so here's what's been going on with me lately in the off-chance anyone is interested:
---
Car accident stuff is finally resolved 2 months after it happened. Turns out the registered owner of the car (hispanic male, old enough to have kids from what I read on the police report) wasn't the driver I saw (a hispanic female, early 20s). He claimed to have no idea who was driving his car because he knows nobody who fits that description (lol). The police decided they had better things to do than continue the investigation, so she was never caught or charged. That said, the guys insurance did agree to take full responsibility for it and paid for my bumper, time I missed at work, out of pocket medical costs, and pain and suffering. They also agreed to send him my video of the accident, so maybe that'll get the guy to have a change of heart and turn in whoever it was.
---
Work has been really hectic and stressful. We're playing with some very large quantities of weaponized electricity, which is both incredibly fun and also incredibly nerve-wracking. At the energy levels we're dealing with, catching it across my body would basically mean they'd be scraping pieces of me off of the ceiling. Causing an arc with a metal tool without actually being touched by the electricity would probably still result in death just from the flash and arc-blast. So yeah, fun, but also pretty stressful to work with.
---
Personal hobby projects are getting interesting. I just bought a bunch of small and cheap boost converters from china that'll step 3.7 volts up to a claimed 400kilovolts (in reality I think it's more like 20kv). I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with them yet, but I'm sure I'll think of something. Some really quick testing shows these things can jump an arc about half an inch.
Then I have a friend who's building a laser cutter from scratch. And by scratch I mean like down to the individual components to make this thing from the ground up. I'm hoping I'll have time to help him out with it because it's looking like it's going to be a really fun project. The laser uses a high voltage power supply, so I'd love to be able to apply some of my knowledge from work to actually make it relatively safe. I've seen some people online do some really stupid things with it, like running the 25kv cables into an ammeter on the outside of the box for any random person to touch accidentally.
---
On the art front I have a few drawings and stories I need to finish up, and then a few drawings and stories I have ideas for. I'm also thinking of reorganizing the way I handle my account here. I was originally not planning on participating much in the community (lol) and therefore had decided to keep my favorites just for bookmarking art of Perry that I haven't uploaded to my own account. Unfortunately, that makes it tricky to fave other artwork that I like. I think over the next few weeks I'm going to start uploading the various Perry giftart to scraps after double checking with the artists. That way it'll keep all of the Perry stuff in one place and I can start using favorites as they were intended.
I've also been experimenting with doing some NSFW stuff with adult Perry in terms of both stories and artwork commissions, which leaves me with a question for those of you who have managed to read this far: should I post those here, or should I make an account specifically for nsfw perry stuff? Part of me wants to keep the two things separate, but then on the other hand it's kind of a hassle to manage multiple accounts and I feel that the nsfw one would probably end up being pretty neglected. If you guys have any thoughts on that I'd love to hear them.

PSA: Dashcams and you
Posted 8 years agoGet one. And if you've already got one, get a second rear-facing one. They're less than $100, don't require anything special to install (you've got a USB power socket in your car right?), and you basically just set it and forget it. Here, I'll even link one: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Box-Or...../dp/B00FONBG1A
Reason I'm posting this is because I was in a hit and run accident 2 days ago (nonono, the *other* person did the hitting and running) and got a concussion out of the deal. But thanks to my dashcam I've got video proof corroborating my statement to the police about the car that hit me, and a nice audio recording of me shouting out the license plate number as they drove off (can't make it out on camera so it's a good thing I did). The really interesting bit to me though was that while I was in the ER and showing the video I'd offloaded from my dashcam to my phone, even a good 50% of the hospital staff I talked to were like "what's a dash cam? And why were you recording yourself driving home from work?". So yeah, I thought everyone knew what they were, but apparently that's not the case.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there. I've had the camera for like 4 years just silently recording away; and even though this is the first time in which I've had to actually use it it's more than paid for itself at this point in time.

One more stream
Posted 8 years agoSo I have 99% of my pre-vacation stuff all taken care of and was thinking of spending most of sunday afternoon streaming before I disappear on tuesday. I'll probably start out queuing up some sketches to try and finish during my trip, but if we get enough people interested I can host drawpile and we can play the paperfold game again.
For anyone who doesn't know what the paperfold game is, basically it's like a cross between pictionary and telephone. The RL version is played sitting around a table using strips of paper (generally an 8.5x11 cut in half lengthwise). Everyone writes a sentence, then passes their paper to the right. Everyone then draws a picture of the sentence, folds the paper down so the sentence is hidden, then passes right again. Then everyone writes a sentence of the picture, folds the picture down, passes, etc. until there's no more paper left. At the end everyone unfolds them to read, and comedy ensues. The digital version works using drawpile (basically multiplayer mspaint) and everyone zooming in on the canvas so they can only see a single square at a time. Here's how it turned out the last time we played it (each column is its own sequence and each color is a different person): http://i.imgur.com/b2QrRzJ.png
So yeah, TL;DR tomorrow afternoon should be pretty fun.

Disappearing for a few weeks
Posted 8 years agoSo next week I leave on vacation to the UK and don't come back until the later half of April. I'm traveling with some friends who definitely don't know about my involvement in any of uh... this sort of stuff, so I'm not sure how often I'll be online.
It should be a fun trip though. Current itinerary is take about a week to go from Heathrow->Bletchley Park->Newcastle (for UK maker faire)->Edinburgh->Glasgow (royal yacht, and sterling castle are on the list of stuff to see there) then turn south again for Porthsmouth where our UK-based friend lives. Then from there we'll probably hang out in Porthmouth for a week, then go see everything we can in London (with possibly a day trip southeast to the battle of britain museum) for the remaining week before returning home.
Also, if anyone has any recommendations for stuff to go see while we're there, I'd love to hear them.

Some media that I'm actually pretty enthusiastic about
Posted 8 years agoSo I figure if you guys are watching me it's probably because you like the stuff I tend to post, which would in theory mean we have similar taste as well. Assuming that's the case, here are some tv shows and movies I've seen lately that I feel pretty happy about having watched. (And for me that's actually saying a lot, because it's pretty hard to get me excited about a movie or tv show)
Over the Garden Wall:
Really great series about two brothers lost in "the unknown", which is a kind of surrealistic dark woodsey kind of place. The art style and world design are great, the storytelling is great, and the characters are great. It's got an almost perfect mix of dark/lighthearted/dramatic irony/humor, and remains pretty consistent throughout. I have no idea how I hadn't heard of it until recently, but it was definitely a great watch. First episode is on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wc1-q1CX_E
Kubo and the Two Strings:
Stop motion animation done so smoothly you'd swear it was computer generated. Amazing visuals (go watch all the behind the scenes stuff after you watch the movie, they really went all out), really good story, great characters, etc. I don't want to spoil it by saying more about it, but it left me with the same feeling as after I watched Howls Moving Castle (my first Hayao Miyazaki movie) for the first time. I feel like the trailer was too spoilery (imo the movie is best if you walk into it without knowing anything), but watch this about how they did the opening scene if you're not convinced to watch it for the technical aspects alone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu0d4gvDBs8
A Series of Unfortunate Events (netflix series):
I mean, it's a netflix series so you've probably been living under a rock if you haven't heard of it, but imo it's really good (if only netflix had decided to do the expanse series instead of syfy). It's quite dark (obviously), but they throw in so much dramatic irony, well done 4th wall breaking via the narrator walking into scenes, clever dialog, and great film work that it stays very entertaining (and dare I say, humorous) without feeling dark and oppressive like the movie version did.
So how about you guys, any good movies or shows you've seen lately?

Some updates and plans
Posted 8 years agoI'm sure no one is really all that interested in what I'm up to, but I'm procrastinating, and writing a journal about it seems like as good a way as any to kill time.
Work got really stressful over the last few weeks. I went from pulling tons of overtime over the holidays to help spend year-end internal R&D money (which was actually pretty fun since I was basically hanging out with my friends working on our pet projects and generally doing what I love with zero pressure) and then straight into tons of overtime because the system we delivered to a customer wasn't working right and I'm now the only software developer supporting it (I inherited the codebase and hardware from a team of PhDs who, in hindsight, probably realized they were in over their heads and decided to get out while the getting was good).
The good news is that overtime = more money = closer to my goal of buying my own place. Real estate prices in socal are ridiculous (I could buy a mansion on 20 acres in Indiana for the cost of a down payment on a 2 bedroom house in San Diego). I'm not looking forwards to navigating all of the stress and hassle I suspect I'll be in for once I'm ready to start the buying process, but it will be awesome having my own place with no one to bother me (at least for a while, whatever I buy will definitely have to have an extra room for renting out just in case I get bored).
Then on the personal projects front I've got a few neat things going on. I've been working with a friend now for about a year building a coilgun. While there are literally hundreds of them out there to be found on YouTube, ours actually takes a pretty unique approach that I've only seen 2-3 other people do. We've seen pretty good success on our test platform so far with just 3 coils, and I've got a bunch of experiments planned to optimize it. Once that's figured out, we move up to 10 coils and double the kinetic energy.
I'm also slowly going over the material for a HAM license. There's a lot of really interesting things going on with software defined radio, plus I feel like what over learned from the coilgun project has given me enough knowledge to actually have some hope of comprehending RF. Once I'm out of this latest sprint at work I'll have to start looking into when and where the next opportunity to take the test will be.
Then there are two upcoming trips in their planning stages that should be pretty interesting. One is a sailing trip with some friends from San Diego to Catalina and back (it'll be a fun opportunity to play with HAM radio stuff too if I have my licence/equipment by then). We're going to start doing some shakedown cruises once a month until the trip in ~August while we get the boat ready and slowly buy equipment.
Then the other trip is going to be a visit to the UK to see friends, do touristy things, and also check out the UK Maker faire in April. Should be interesting. The tentative plan is to fly into Heathrow, spend a few days making our way north for maker faire, continue north from there to see other stuff, then back down to London to do more sightseeing for a few days before heading home.
So that's about it for me. Any of you guys doing anything interesting? Or even anything boring for that matter? I'd love to hear about it.

Who are you and what do you want!
Posted 9 years agoSo let me preface this by saying that despite my registration date, I've mostly been a very passive observer and am not really up on all of the cultural norms and different ways people use FA. It wasn't until a few months ago that I felt comfortable enough to stop lurking and start trying to actually participate in the community. Now that I've started to commission things and comment on stuff, I've noticed that I've picked up a few watchers. Personally I use my watchlist as a sort of catalogue of my favorite artists/writers/content-posters, but I suspect other people might use theirs differently (e.g. as a friends list, a substitute for the 'favorite' button, or something to press on accident and then wonder why the hell some weird dudes journals are showing up in their feed). I'd like to try and come out of my shell and actually engage with people, which brings me the subject of this journal: Who are you guys, and is there any particular thing you want to see from me?
Did you just want to see more commissions of my character doing things? More of some particular subject matter regardless of the character? Stories? (I'm a terrible writer, but I'm willing to embarrass myself for the entertainment of others). Updates about my various hobby electronics projects?
I'm not really all that creative of a person, but I definitely know the feeling of seeing some art, reading some story, or observing a series of comments that makes my entire day. If there's anything I can do to help create that feeling in others, I'd love to hear it. Or alternatively if you don't have any particular feedback or requests and just want to say hi, feel free.

Test journal please ignore
Posted 9 years agoOr comment here if you didn't read the subject, that's fine too :D
