Circlejerking?
Posted 21 hours agoCirclejerking, or "mutual admiration society" or "groupthink". It's basically where members of a community excessively validate each other's views or attitudes in a narrow, self-congratulatory, or self-indulgent way.
What communities do you think are some of the biggest circlejerk communities? This could be online or offline.
I'll start:
- Business Networking Groups (I'm talking groups like Rotary Club or BNI international and other professional networking groups. It's honestly a club for desperate (unemployable) people to sell marked-up products and services).
- AI Bros and Anti-AI peeps (both sides are equally prone to keyboard wars online).
- Clubhouses (I'm a member of a clubhouse in Singapore where most members are 50+ years old and complain about petty things).
- Reddit (I browse Reddit daily, and people circlejerk to gain upvotes).
- Audiophiles (EVERY GOD DAMN HI-FI OWNER CLAIMS HI-FI MUSIC IS THE BEST MUSIC).
- Public transport advocates (I love public transport, I'm even a metrophile. But seriously, you shouldn't be going around threatening to deflate the tyres of car owners).
- Church cell group (I love being theologically engaged, not be told the same parable for the 9161904081719th time).

JAF1320Do Your OCs Consume Alcohol/Tobacco/Recreational Drugs?
Posted 3 days agoAn interesting convo I had the other day was on the topic of alcohol, tobacco, narcotics and recreational drug use by characters we create.
I'll say most of my own OCs drink alcohol, including two of my Muslim OCs in Izri and Ali. My main OC, Kedran and others like Zulema, Pivari, Iqbal, Thana and Zayeda abstain from alcohol, however.
For tobacco, Alevtina, Ali, Izri and Thana are regular smokers. Some (like Alevtina) smoke more than others.
As for recreational drugs and narcotics, no OC of mine consumes any, though Thana does distribute and sell them (illegally) as with her black market shenanigans.
What about your OCs? Do any of them spend a bit of their cash on addictive substances?

How much money are you making every month/year?
Posted 5 days agoWhenever I tell people I make slightly above $52000 (Singapore Dollars) a year (excluding commission work) I get three reactions:
A: Wow, you're rich.
B: That's decent.
C: You're underpaid.
For context, $52k SGD is ~$40,000 USD, ~34.600 € EUR, ~£30,410 GBP, ~RM 168,000 MYR, ~1.05 billion Vietnamese dong.
And I think the fascinating thing is where that person comes from. Are they from the EU earning Euros? Or they from Brazil earning reais?
Hypothetically, an artist from Russia who manages to make $500 USD in a month (which is almost ₽40,000 Roubles) has just earned more money than a factory worker from the same country.
But there's also living expenses, taxation, and how much a country provides benefits and subsidies.
So, how much are making in YOUR local currency?
~JAF1320
P.S. The salary information above will be outdated starting 2026.

What will you do to your OCs if you leave the fandom?
Posted a week agoLet's say, hypothetically, you want to leave the fandom. So what will you do with your OCs?
Will you will your OCs to another person? Or will you bring your OCs with you and keep it private? Will you give your password to your next-of-kin, or a friend in the fandom and let them inherit everything?
Just a curious question I thought about just now.
Disclaimer: And no, I am not leaving the community anytime soon. I like it here.

What is the US Better At than Europe?
Posted 3 weeks agoListen, aside from 99% of American towns being cookie cutter layouts, you cannot deny just how incredible the US's geographical landscape is; from it's wildlife to its dramatic climate differences.
With the news cycle constantly preoccupying everyone, I feel its easy to forget that when you take away the human, you have nature.
Now, landscapes aside, I will say this:
- The best burgers I've ever had in my was in Hawaii
- American composers/musicians are some of my favourite (look up Aaron Copland or Miles Davis)
- The United States has the top universities in the world
And I think one of the more obscure one:
- America is the birthplace of the furry fandom, and remains its biggest contributor.
Aight, now it's your turn. Spit out what you think America is better at than Europe.
I give you permission to be as political as you like for my daily popcorn.

How Often (or Not) Are You Having Sex IRL?
Posted a month agoAs someone who intends to be single (granted, if another relationship should happen it happens), the last time for me was a couple of years ago during university with some Russian-American girl from Austria, but COVID-19 had other ideas. Since then, life, busy-ness, career and errands decided to fuck with me instead. That said, my toys are pretty sufficient for me.
Though I'm curious, anyone here sexually active? And if so, how often?
Also, are you a big spoon or small spoon?

The Languages AI (LLMs) Cannot Be Trained to Keep Up
Posted a month agoAll languages evolve. Middle English sounds phonetically different to Modern English, and Old French almost sounds like Latin and Italian mixed together.
LLMs trained today cannot predict how languages will evolve and change over time, that's a given. At most, LLMs can preserve and fossilise data today, and its possible to preserve them for another thousand years. But by the year 3000, the preserved language might as well look like Old English by future us.
I mean, take objects like: Filofax, Sony Walkman, Floppy Disk, Bakelites or Aerogramme. Pretty sure some of you reading this might not even know some of these objects. Then we have English pronouns like: Thou/Thee/Thy/Thine which actually used to be the informal forms of You/You/Your/Yours.
And now we have new words (or revived/repurposed words) like Skibidi, 6-7, Gooner, Tung Tung Tung Sahur, etc.
But there are languages today I feel that are impossible (no matter how much one tries) for LLMs to perfect. I'm talking about indigenous languages that practice avoidance speech.
In layperson terms, some languages replace words with alterations and/or sound changes due to events, seasons, coming of age, marriage, kinship, but especially upon the death of individuals. Let's say (hypothetically) the Prime Minister of Australia passes away suddenly. For many Indigenous Australian communities, there will be a certain period of time (usually a couple of years) in which the deceased Prime Minister's name cannot be uttered or named. Australian Aboriginal languages like Warlpiri, Yolŋu or Dyirbal (and hundreds more) alter words, or use substitute words if they want to address said decease PM during the mourning period.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is, AI (LLMs) cannot be trained on languages that rapidly evolve to the point that each new generation speaks a practically new language. In many small communities in Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, whole villages as few as 100-200 people usually end up speaking entirely different languages within 2-3 generations, due to so many nouns/pronouns which cannot be named due to changing events, and death of loved ones.
Yes, for super conservative folk who hate English pronouns, remember there are languages in Oceania that change their pronouns once every 2-3 generation, or when an individual marries/dies/hits a certain age, etc.
LLMs preserve, but they do not have the social capacity to know what is a taboo; a taboo which changes by the generation, if not by the year.
Oh an don't get me started on creoles and pidgin languages. I'll be impressed if AI data collection could keep up with rapidly evolving creoles like Jamaican Patois or African American Vernacular English.

Your OC Names Suck, Let's Make it Better >:3c
Posted a month agoGood, you've join me on the name iceberg. Now I'm here to roast your badly named OCs >:3c
Please do not...
1) ... Name your OC in such a way you yourself can't pronounce.
2) ... Name your Japanese OC Sally or Alexander.
3) ... Mix up Spanish/Portuguese surnames. In Spanish, Alejandro Luis Fernández Muñoz has his father's surname (Fernández) first, before his mother's surname. In Portuguese, Alexandre Luis Munhoz Fernandes has his father's name at the back of the full name, after his mother's.
4) ... address your own OC's double barrelled names by their first half only. Mary Jane is one name, and so is Jean-Pierre, Jean-Marie, Juan Pablo, Juan María, Giampiero, Karl-Heinz (or Karlheinz) or Hans-Jürgen, etc.
5) ... give ridiculously long compound surnames like: Sextus Denys Oswolf Fraudatifilius Tollemache-Tollemache de Orellana Plantagenet Tollemache-Tollemache (yes this is real, go search it up).
6) ... give your OC the name of Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz, you might just start WW3.
7) ... attempt to make an OC from Indonesia, Southern India, the Philippines or Thailand. Unless you're crazy like me, you'll find yourself reading a whole PhD paper trying to figure out how they work.
8) ... name a Chinese OC just "Lee" or "Li". Chinese (and Korean) names are comprised of a surname (almost always of a single character), and a given name made of 2 characters (sometimes 1). I'm sick and tired of seeing Chinese OCs created by non-Asian peeps named something like "Lu" with no Hanzi provided. Like which Lu is it? 陸, 盧, 魯, 祿, 鹿? If you want to be realistic, name them Lu Bo (where Lu is the surname). If Lu is the given name, then it could be Zhen Lu. Otherwise, like 80-90% of all Chinese names are something like "Bo Zhenlu".
9) ... confuse Hungarian and Japanese name orders. In the West they are written Given Name-Surname order, but natively, they are reversed: Surname-Given Name.
10) ... Forget your (East) Slavic patronymics. Instead of just Nikolai Popov, try Nikolai Sergeyovich Popov. The "middle name" is their father's name with the patronymic suffix "-ovich". A female will be Tatyana Sergeyevna Popova. Could go a long way with Russian artists you commission! (Also applies to Ukrainians and Belarusians).
11) ... make Icelandic surnames fixed. They are patronymics. Jóhannsdóttir means "daughter of Jóhann", and "Óskarsson" is "son of Óskar".
12) ... name your OC in a Tonal language. You're probably going to fail.
13) ... name your OC Skibidi or 6 7.
14) ... let these tips be the be all end all. You can ignore all tips above and just have goddamn fun with your own character. Sometimes a bit of strange inconsistent worldbuilding is necessary for some slapstick. Only down side is I will judge you... harshly... with TITS.

Posted a month agoHere in Singapore, we've been experiencing a lot of breakdowns in our train services, often resulting in delays of 10-20 minutes.
Our trains usually run on frequencies of of 2-3 minutes during rush hour, and 3-5 minutes off peak. Wait times above 6 minutes, we start complaining. More than 10 minutes, and it's national news.
We want to be like Japan and Switzerland; punctual, no exceptions.
I want trains to be on time down to the second, and that also applies to our buses. Bus wait times exceeding 5 minutes is unacceptable and our ministers should be punished.
How the fuck do you people in Germany survive delays? Isn't it not normal to not lose your shit after exactly 1 second the train hasn't arrive at the station? How many Japanese tourists have committed sudoku just waiting?

Suno AI (and Why it Sucks)
Posted 2 months agoI subscribed to Suno AI (an AI Music Making software) for one month, and it sucks.
As a composer, I give it 2/10 stars, because despite following the advice of "veteran" users of AI on Reddit, I cannot get a single generated result that satisfies me. Some say I'm being a perfectionist, but no, I find Suno AI to be bland and highly unoriginal (on the same level as AI furry slop that's only good for quick fap sessions and nothing more).
Suno AI loves cranking up the distortion filter too high, and its instrument choices are always so generic (even typing "Muted Electric Guitar" or "Violin Solo Col Legno" prompt doesn't do anything). The website is also very anal about certain words and blacklists anything that could even be remotely adult related (e.g. it will flag lyrics containing the word "shit" and therefore not generate).
Also, every single generation uses 4/4, 2/2 or 2/4 time (i.e. duple metre). Suno AI (and other music AI software like Udio) cannot produce music on time signatures of 9/8, 5/4 or 9/16 because there is not enough data to statistically realise music in these metres (they exist, but they constitute too small of a % of all music composed for Suno AI devs to delve into).
Finally, Suno AI cannot improvise music. No amount of AI music can realise improvisation. For instance, live jazz bands actively delegate one of their players to solo on a cue, and no two performances are the same. The drummer may also slightly deviate in rhythm, or even change metres on the fly. Sometimes the soloists will perform hemiola (i.e. 3:2 ratio music) and polyrhythms (like 3/2 and 4/4 times simultaneously). This is something AI cannot create or do because it is unable to create new "data" within the realm of improvisation. And don't get me started on Figured Bass (classical musicians will know what I'm talking about), and Indian raga music (which relies on a completely different set of musical theory different from Western Musical traditions which Suno AI is built upon).
The only silver lining with Suno AI is if you are trying to generate forgettable royalty-free background music.
P.S. Suno AI CEO Mikey Shulman once said in an interview a couple months ago that music making "is not fun" for most people. Screw him!

My Story on Animal Dicks
Posted 2 months agoAight, for those who are close to me, the only dick I like and obsess over are humanoid cocks.
I was schooling in Beijing, China as a kid (early 2000s) when I accidentally spotted two stray dogs mating. That red rocket of a penis frightened and disgusted 8 year old me so much that even to this day, I always see canine penises as some tumour that will explode. While I have better coping mechanisms now, I still get a sharp reaction in my testicles imagining my balls exploding whenever I see non-humanoid penises.
From 2010 to 2020, I started disliking animal penises more and more. Soon, I am getting put off by hemi-penises, then it became featureless penises, and the list kept growing until 2019 when I firmly decided to have zero characters with animal genitalia. Also, don't get me started on barbed cocks.
There are many OC whose designs I absolutely adore, but as long they have knotted/exotic/barbed/flared/hemi-penises, I would have to politely say that their genitalia is not for me. Horse cocks are okay to me but they still don't appeal to me as much. There has been like a very few number of artworks where people have put my OC with someone with an animal penis. And to that, I regret green-lighting them years ago. I wish I had more confidence back then to say no.
Any ways, if you've read this far, I thank you very much. If you really have to DM/PM me something with animal genitalia, please warn me (ideally spoiler the image on discord/telegram or whatever platform).
P.S. Geez, I guess turning 30 is the start of my "I don't give a shit what you think" phase.

Would You Leave the Fandom if Your Partner Told You To?
Posted 2 months agoYou've got into a new relationship, you truly and absolutely love your new partner both emotionally, and perhaps even sexually.
But a condition they set in advancing this relationship is that you must completely stop being part of the fandom, and even giving up all the art you've acquired (and your OCs).
Would you enter this relationship? Yes or no?

Posted 2 months agoDid a quick E621 search: order:id. 18 years ago (i.e. 2002) there didn't seem to be a lot of anthro sharks with ears on them.
I've always wondered WHEN or which year did ears started appearing on sharks.

One of the Best Youtube Video I've Ever Watched!
Posted 2 months agoVideo title: NOT The Origins of Russian Authoritarianism (Response to Kraut) (a video critique by Noj Rants)
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_bEpKBd07w
I used to follow this YouTuber called Kraut, and I hate to say that I once liked his videos a lot. Kraut uses a lot of posh language, and references to often debunked political science books to prove that certain countries act in certain ways because of historical factors and history. I was convinced, until I wasn't. Kraut is selling to his viewers political ideas disguised as history. It's also not helped that digging into some reddit posts that Kraut used to be a Neo-Nazi from Austria, and has a strong hatred for Muslims. He's since toned down before making his YouTube channel and being less edgy.
Now for context, the original video from Kraut: The Origins of Russian Authoritarianism explains how the Mongol Empire caused Russia to be authoritarian to this day in a psychological sense. The "Tatar Yoke" is an orientalist way of saying that Russia is a seemingly backwards state with backwards people.
The counter video (which is linked at the top of this journal), while complex and lasting over 1 hour long, takes a very informed and nuanced view (and supplying over almost 200 references) explaining that this is false. It covers Russian history from the Kievan Rus to modern day Russia, all while correcting every mistake and falsity in Kraut's video. Russians are (like any people on this planet) not predisposed to accepting authoritarian systems; human nature is always about the exercise of agency and responsibility. The numerous Russian artists, who still use their VPNs to access FurAffinity is one proof of their agency and volition to act.
Addendum: Noj Rants, who specialises in Russian history has some very well research videos on Soviet topics, from Soviet Elections, Soviet Education, and more. His videos are purely historical, and he never attempts to sell any political idea; just pure facts which I find incredibly refreshing in a world where content is always nuanced to push you to a certain view.
This journal is NOT a defence of the current Russian government nor its wrongs, but a careful reminder to people that government action is not a reflection of individuals, and videos that attempt to "lump" people groups into singular monolithic personalities are only meant to stir division. What a government does (be it the US, UK, Russia, China, France, Germany, Ukraine, etc.) is not a reflection of people's individual thoughts and opinions.
We do not choose where we are born, but we have the social responsibility to act kindly to the person next to us.

Transphobia within the Trans Community? Really?
Posted 3 months agoQuick disclaimer: this post is a criticism of bad community moderation.
So Reddit's latest drama has saw r/trans plunged into chaos after a trans man brought up in a post about unfair treatment of trans men (female>to>male) in trans communities. The r/trans mods subsequently deleted his post. Said trans man questioned the decision, to which r/trans mods (whom are trans women) doubled down and banned him, saying that topics about "trans men rights" is divisive (or something on those lines). It was later revealed that the moderators of that community actively banned or deleted users who even bring up topics on trans men.
This triggered a whole lot of drama in r/trans (which has 600k members), resulting in it getting the 1984 treatment by its mod team. You can see the drama better explained here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/1lzbkr7/head_mod_of_rtrans_tries_unsuccessfully_to/
Even as a straight/cis-ally, it hurts when people in communities that finally have open acceptance (no matter how big or niche) use their status for brownie points. I treat you as a human being, and I understand your struggles. And granted, few countries even recognise or legislate trans rights.
But please, for the love of god, ones plight is not an excuse to be an ass to other people. Forcing one's views on another (especially against their will) makes one no different from that one time Jehovah Witnesses' heckled me with Proverbs 3:5–6 on my front doorstep a few years ago, and I am a baptised Anglican, or Episcopan for you Americans, since 2013 (which is why those keen eyed amongst you could see a ✝ symbol at the bottom of my FA front page).
Moral of the story: don't be a dick!

Artists to Commission (anthro dragons, birds, scalies)?
Posted 4 months agoFirst week into my new job, and I'm now planning on being financially irresponsible (ok not really lol).
Any artists who are open for commissions? Budget-wise, I'm keeping myself to a max $150 USD.

AI Imagery vs Banana Taped to A Wall
Posted 4 months agoWe all heard of the (in)famous "Banana Taped to the Wall" exhibit in 2019 (Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedian_(artwork))
Someone then asked me recently, 'is a Banana Taped to a Wall any more valuable than AI imagery?'
But I'm curious to hear what others think!
Personally, I resolve this problem by saying that Banana Taped to the Wall isn't so much art in a traditional sense, its the application of "art" to a public stunt.
