General | Posted 14 years agoWent on a convoy yesterday; was pretty much uneventful. Caught like 4 hours of video on my little camera, but didn't catch anything interesting. This place is barren, the living conditions are terrible, most of the kids flip you off and some actually wave, the people drive mad crazy out here and one actually hit one of our LVSRs carrying two full ISO containers (not something a smart person would pull out in front of), then after that someone reported over the radio that a midget was throwing fruit at us; we all LOLed. Another thing to notice is there's a blown up vehicle (all civilian) on the side of the road like every 2 miles, so it seems almost like their IEDs blow up their own people more than they do us, but we do get hit a lot.
We got there, passed out in the truck for the night (my back will never forgive me), did some firewatch, woke up, helped with a few small things, then everyone waited for 3 hours for our trucks to be loaded, then we finally headed out. Pretty much uneventful, but at least I got to see some of this country (what little there is to see).
Maybe I'll get to see more next time on one of th elonger runs if I can get on one.

General | Posted 14 years agoI couldn't believe what I was hearing when I was told that my laptop, my custom built $2500 laptop, was in the hands of some random dude in Fort Bragg NC. I've been tracking this order for almost going on a month now only to hear they botched up the shipping.
I called USPS and they basically shrugged their shoulders and said it was delivered to its proper address. I talked to an online rep at xoticpc and they tell me "maybe that's just a hub where they gather military mail and fly it over to the middle east" and I'm like "an army base? hello no." So I call the post office who received the thing and they tell me it was delivered to a PO box somewhere in Fort Bragg and was properly signed for (yes, it was registered mail. you'd have to sign my name and show ID to even gaze upon its presence.) So I call up xotic and get a hold of a supervisor and she tells me they're going to launch a investigation to see who to point fingers at and cover the bill, then tells me this could be a lengthy process and could take some time and I tell her I've already been waiting nearly a month.

In other news, this place still sucks, my awesome beast mode laptop will be here in a few days along with like 20 games I compulsively ordered from Amazon for it.

Still not too often I can really get on here, but I figured I'd post an update of events or something for anyone who cares to read.
Me and Kao are still running into each other whenever I can make time to bug him, and another buddy of mine, Kovu, is around too, but I think he's stuck up in Bagram, so I won't really get to see him.
Work has been slow and monotonous as usual, though as a side job, I got stuck on the security team if anything happens to the base. Only perk with that is I get to haul around more ammo.
I'm still waiting for my turn to go on a convoy and meet the friendly locals (that's sarcasm btw =P )
Today was nice though. I got the chance to fly out on a V-22 Osprey. Those things are ridiculously maneuverable and fast; flies like a fixed wing, but can do all the stunts of a rotary wing and then some.
Made a couple people sick, but I enjoyed it. I'll upload a pic or two of that once we compile them all together.
Other than all that, it's just the usual. Would be nice if I could make some more friends out here to hang out with though. If anyone knows any furs stationed out here, tell em I said hi; even better if they're European, I love meeting new and foreign people.

General | Posted 14 years agoSorry to everyone about the fact that I'm still rarely online and haven't been responding to journals or anything. The internet is kind of rare for me right now and whenever I get on I just chat for a bit and hop off because it's so late.
I really hope to get good internet sometime this or next month so I can start properly socializing again.
Wish I could give updates on how everything has been over here, but I have to keep it vague for security reasons. It's pretty much just sleep work and eat.

Connection Issues
General | Posted 14 years agoSorry to everyone that I haven't been online. The internet here is just too slow, it won't even load up my messengers. Once we get our permanent rooms in a few weeks, myself and my roomies will chip in for the internet provided by the British; expensive, but it's worth it. Until then, just know I haven't forgotten about everyone and hope to chat with you all soon.
Settling in

We've just about got our jobs down pat, though there were a few wrinkles that jammed things up causing us to work 15 hours for a few days getting things sorted out. The night and day shift schedules are falling into place and evening out the work load too.
I've also noticed this place is a lot more active than than most would believe. On top of the daily intel that gets passed down, stories from two of my friends tell of all the hostile activity in the region, so you have to be careful out here; even on base.
I still have a few safety courses I need to take before I can leave on convoys, however. Till then I'm stuck in the office supporting the guys in the front however I can.
Hope to hear from everyone soon.

Been out here in Afghanistan for almost a week. Camp Leatherneck and Camp Bastion make for one large base, almost like it's a city. a very dusty, boring city made of tents, cans, and concrete walls with barbwire.
Quickly learning my job since the guy I changed over with was leaving in a hurry, so he gave me a crash course. I'll get the hang of things out here, maybe get to know some people, and form a routine that will make the days blur by until I come home.
Also, good ol
kaothewolf is out here with me. Should be fun times.

General | Posted 14 years agoFinally finished with this crap. We fly back in just a few days. Past couple of days have consisted of sitting on my ass and sweating, then tonight they're letting us have 4 cups of booze then clean the whole camp first thing in the morning with hangovers.
It's going to be so nice to get back and go on block leave; hopefully visit friends and family in Michigan then come back so we can fly over to the "real" crap.

Usual Routine

Sorry I haven't really been active online or updating anything; just not a whole lot happens out here.
Wake up, walk to work, go to gym, dawdle on interwebs, shower, pass out on cot; repeat 30 times and that's really all that's been going on out here. This will probably be the same schedule I adopt when I go to Afghanistan; just helps the days blur by.
Only thing happening really is I'm attending a green belt course starting tomorrow; should last a week or so. That will look good on my record for promotion and help me choke annoying people more efficiently. I plan on coming back from Stan with my black belt.
Also volunteered for an EMP shoot Friday. Figured it would be good to get me out of the workplace for a bit and just spray rounds down range. Just not going to look forward to standing around in the sun all day in my flak jacket (sweeeeeaaat).
That's really about it. dull... sucks...

General | Posted 14 years agoSorry to everyone that I haven't been around much lately. I've just been resting and getting ready for Viper Training and then deployment immediately after that.
I'll try to be a little more sociable and go to meets or something before I leave (have to be frugal though because I'm trying to clear up some debt before I leave).

Another Weekend.
General | Posted 14 years agoBleh, we missed the CCI meetup, and I really wanted to see the cute foxes, wolves, and all of that. Well at least we had fun hanging out with some friends and Axel gave me an awesome little Arctic Fox (I shall name her Snowy =P ), and we got to drive around in Kao's new jeep this time around (We couldn't afford gas on mine anyway x3 ).
Overall, a nice weekend, would have been better had we made it to CCI, but it was still enjoyable; look forward to the next time.

Talking about the animal welfare organization. Contacted them last night about one of the tards living next to the place I'm renting for my mom. Guy has a big ol friendly pitbull that he keeps in a tiny cage roughly 24/7. The major thunder storm that whacked us last night basically took a giant piss on us and sounded like an artillery exercise and the whole time the poor guy was stuck out in his cage yelping all night. Couldn't sleep because it was pissing me off.
I wish I could simply go over there and inform the guy, with the back of my hand, on how to take care of your pets, but I have to think about the safety of my pups and mom. I don't need the jerks that inhabit this place screwing with them while I'm over on base during the week days.
Anyway, I'll be calling the SPCA center later today during hours of operation to follow up on the ticket I submitted (hopefully they're open on Saturday).
Freaking retarded, I swear.

3 Way Weekend

Pretty much got a 3 in one starting off with Alsiars's place, then we had the picnic (food, friends, and fun), then topped it off by hanging out at Liztail's place. I definately enjoyed myself and I hope everyone else did to. Looking forward to the next meetup I can make it out to.

General | Posted 14 years agoIt was a 4 hour trip one way to pick up my car, but I got it. Finally got it, oh mah gawsh I love it!
It looks great, and you can't really tell by looking at it, but it needs a little TLC; nothing major, though. I'm getting it inspected this week while I still have a 30 day warranty.
