Two Years Later
Posted 9 years agoTwo years later and I'm finally saying something new! I'm working on getting myself more active again socially, but am also finishing up a dissertation, so the process is one step forwards, two steps to the library. Future plans are a little vague at the moment, but I can say with reasonable confidence that after May, I will be heading away from Southern Indiana freshly decorated with my doctoral swagger. Where will I be going? Great question. I have dozens of applications out, though, so hopefully something will turn up in my field.
I will be missing folks at MFF, but work calls. Hopefully more cons to come in the future!

Summer Life Update
Posted 11 years agoHello furry friends! I realize it's been ages since I've said or done anything on here, so I think it's about time I give a short update on what I'm up to and where life's headed for me.
Back at the beginning of June my boyfriend,
alice-friedman , moved into the house after what felt like ages of waiting for that moment. We've been working on getting him settled into the house, finding a job (which was successful largely thanks to
cr4shb01), and navigating the who-wakes-up/sleeps when and all that that comes with living together. All in all, it's been going quite well.
This summer has kept me busy with schoolwork. I'm taking German for my secondary modern language proficiency (did French two years ago) and also because half of the research I need to do is tangled up in German academic articles. I'm also teaching the second half Latin Reading Proficiency for Grad Students class, where we actually get to read a little extended narrative. Been through some Caesar, Cicero, Sallust, Seneca, Augustine and today's assignment is the Letter of Heloise to Abelard. Midterm tomorrow, then poetry segment.
In addition, I've been given clearance to start the preliminary work on my dissertation project, despite still being in coursework. Thus, I've been compiling a massive research bibliography and hunting down resources to study the Historia Augusta, a strange pseudo-biographical work written sometime in the 4th century AD about the Roman emperors from Hadrian to just before Diocletian. It's delightfully tabloid-esque and makes for an amusing read. The actual scholarship on it is kinda one-note and all coming from one major school, whose opinions I don't necessarily agree with so far. Which is great for the eventual dissertation-writing stage of things.
I'm still singing at the Episcopalian church in town for a side job and in a week will be conducting the anthem in the absence of the music director.
I'm taking a trip back home to Massachusetts at the beginning of August and hopefully will get to see a few friends along the way. It's too much of a drive for me to make it all at once, in any case. Future cons will be interesting, as most of my usual cons are probably off the schedule for this year. IFC falls on the day of my Latin Lit PhD examination, MFF right when I'll have to be buckling down for finals week for the classes I'll be taking and teaching. Consequently, I'm looking into FangCon as a possibility for the fall. Spring will likely be Morphicon and FurryCon: Game of Con Chairs, as expected for someone who is staff for both.
I'm hoping to get some yarn art done this summer, so keep a weather eye out for that and feel free to inquire about a commission, if such things pique your interest.
That's all from me now, folks. Keep on keeping on and I'll see y'all around.

Hooves Tickling the Ivories
Posted 11 years agoIt seems I'm going to be behind the piano in public for the first time in a long time! Tuesday, April 22 at a to-be-determined evening time, at First Christian Church in Bloomington, IN, a wonderful performer and fellow Ole Evelyn Nelson will be presenting a recital to raise money for the local Habitat for Humanity Women's Build. The first two sets will be Mozart and Brahms, last I heard. The second half, and the half I'll be playing, will be music of Samuel Barber and a selection of showtunes, currently slated to include music from Songs for a New World, Little Women, and The Sound of Music.
It would be wonderful to see folks there! Evelyn is asking for donations to assist the building project.
I'll post a more definite time once I know one!
(For those curious about the vocalist)

March 15 Bloomington Laser Tag/Chinese meet updates
Posted 11 years agoFirst off, if you didn't already know, there's a furmeet being planned for Bloomington this coming Saturday and you should totally be there! The general outline is Laser Tag --> Chinese/Japanese buffet (with sushi and made to order hibachi included) --> after party. The details and addresses are here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5515064/
But there are some updates!
First of all, thanks to the much-appreciated assistance of
cr4shb01 and
lunasparkle we have confirmation from the Laser Tag place that fursuits will be permitted, as long as you follow the safety guidelines and keep behavior public friendly. That being said, changing space is somewhat limited and there isn't a great headless lounge spot. Hopefully the weather holds out the way the forecast looks now and we'll have clear skies and warmer weather, so the parking lot and outside can function as such.
Secondly, since we'll be starting as a group, we'll get group rate discounts, so there's good news on that front! We will be sharing space/games with the general public, so we'll take turns cycling in and out of games as space and politeness permit. Everyone should be able to get 2 to 3 games in during the time we have for it and there's the arcade to keep you busy in between.
Third, RSVP! I really would like to be able to give Mr. Hibachi a general count so they're not understaffed for our visit, so the more I'm prepared, the more they're prepared. IN addition, if you expect to want to crash for the night after the party, you may want to bring a sleeping bag. We have lots of people coming into town and only so many mattress-type-deals.

March 15th Bloomington, IN FURMEET! With Lasers!
Posted 11 years agoRound two: this time with more information and lasers!
So, furry folks, it's time to get a group together in Bloomington once more, since it's been a while! To rectify this situation, I hereby propose a day of shooting each other with lasers, endless food, and celebrations.
Stage One: The Lasers
When: 3:00PM
Where: Laser Lite; 4505 E 3rd St, Bloomington, IN, 47401
What: Laser Tag and Arcade
Not too much more info to add on this one! For those who want, there will be organized laser tag games; for those who don't, there's the arcade! The laser tag facility is also quite conveniently located by a small park for those who want to hang around outside in or out of suit. Admissability of fursuits in the laser tag zone has yet to be determined, but there will be updates on that soon!
We get cheaper rates with more people! Groups of 8+ get 2/$12 and 3/$16 and groups of 20+ get 2/$11 and 3/$15. We do have to make reservations, so please get in touch with me (Janu) if you plan to come so we can ballpark the numbers for the place.
Stage Two: The Food
When: 7:00
Where: Mr. Hibachi Buffet; 4400 E. 3rd St, Bloomington, IN, 47401
What: A fantastic Chinese/Japanese buffet
Conveniently situated across the road from Laser Lite is the best buffet in Bloomington. Featuring made-to-order stir fry and sushi included in the buffet nofur has ever left Mr. Hibachi unsatisfied.
http://mrhibachibuffet.com/index.html
Again, ballpark numbers would help so we can warn the staff before descending in hordes!
Stage Three: The Celebration
When: Post-Dinner (9:00 estimate)
Where: Janu's House
What: An early birthday celebration
So the end of March happens to be a certain deer's birthday who may or may not be organizing this whole shindig and writing in the third person. He would really enjoy if those of you who can stay late wanted to come over, play games, have food, and hang out. His roommates have graciously allowed him to summon the hordes twice a year, so there it be!
If you're planning to come to the party, some amount of snack food or beverage is certainly appreciated! There is also the possibility of crash space for those who travel long distances, either at there or at other local furs' places provided we get a heads up! Bringing a sleeping bag or such is highly suggested as plenty of floor space does not necessarily translate into plenty of comfortable sleeping surfaces.
If there is downtime during the meet schedule (between laser tag and dinner or such) or you want to come to parts but not all (say, you're hankering for Mexican instead of Mr. Hibachi), Bloomington has a pretty wide variety of parks, interesting museums, and mall not far from the meet area. Just ask and we'll point you toward something!
tl;dr Want to come hang with furries? Send a note so we can plan for you to be there!

Where are you staying?
The main hotel
What day are you getting there?
Friday afternoon, probably around 4
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
Hiding in my room making myself presentable, running around the con space, maybe a panel or two.
Who will you be rooming with?
Snap, Raven, and Sammy
Do you do free art?
My performance art is always free
Do you do trades?
I could potentially?
Do you do commissions?
I do! Over at
LiirkaLimited though probably not at a table at MFF.
Do you have prints/ CDs?
Noooooope. None that I'm willing to admit I'm on.
Do you do badges?
I can, but they're kinda bulky
What is your gender?
*Twilight Zone*
How old are you?

flit is doing what's promising to be an incredibly sexy tentacle + bondage (that's right, not just one or the other or one by means of the other. BOTH) YCH auction that all you kinky people should go check out and bid on. 'Tis here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11830686/Why am I not bidding myself? Oh...you'll see soon enough. Oh how you'll see.
Excellent Furmeet, thank you all!
Posted 12 years agoI just want to take a moment to thank the 23 other folks who came out to Bloomington for the bowling/BBQ meet and making it such a blast! It was wonderful to see so many new faces around and get to chat with a bunch of folks from IN, OH, and KY (with one floater previously from CA).
I hope you all had as much fun as I did and if you want a copy of the Witch Hunt rules I was using, send me a note and I'll find a way to get you a word file.

BLOOMINGTON FURMEET ADDENDA 9/28
Posted 12 years agoHello wonderful furries who are coming to the furmeet Saturday! (and others, though this message won't do the rest of you much good). Few items of interest:
1. While there is crash space available, there is limited cushioning for it! Sleeping bags or other such things are not a bad idea.
2. Food/drink is always welcome! Other than the rib shack, there will be some munchies and drinks, but extras are always appreciated and more than likely to be devoured.
3. Currently available games include Arkham Horror, Cards Against Humanity (do it yourself, cut out version), and Witch Hunt. The last is sort of like Mafia or Lupus in Tabula (okay...just like) only, I've got enough role cards that nobody has to be a plain old boring villager. Bring other games if you'd like to play~!

Games are $3.50 a person, with $2.50 shoe rental. HOWEVER! Shoe rental fee goes away if we gather a large enough group! The bowling alley is fursuit friendly and we can usually take over the entire bar area for a headless lounge. Feetpaws is a matter they tend to fluctuate on, so I will let you all know the verdict on that ASAP.
5:15ish-when dinner stops, Dinner! Smokin' Jack's Rib Shack, which is just down the road from the bowling alley and serves some of the best barbecue you'll find in Indiana. Take a look here: http://smokinjacksribshack.com/
Fantastic ribs and chicken. The portions are huge! Especially if you go for the rib-tip dinner. I have never finished it in one sitting.
Note: if you are opposed to Smokin' Jack's, do let me know. This isn't completely set in stone and I know their meatless options are...slim.
After dinner, it shall devolve into the usual variance of post-furmeet activities. There are a couple local theatres, a variety of bars, and there's a fire pit and grill set-up at my place that would be perfect for some marshmallow toasting and furry story telling. Or Cards Against Humanity. Or Arkham Horror in the sunroom. And yes, my roommates have given me permission to let a horde of furries descend on the house. They don't know better.
There is the possibility for crash space with one or two of the local furries, so don't let distance keep you away! RSVPs highly appreciated if you plan to crash (also for estimating how many people I warn restaurants about).
There will be a furmeet on Saturday, September 28th in Bloomington, Indiana with bowling, foodstuffs, and general hangout time! Plan goes like this!

A Sample of What I Do iRL
Posted 12 years agoFor those of you who are curious what exactly it is that I do in graduate school for Classical Studies (by the way, I'm in grad school for CLassical Studies, a.k.a. Greek and Latin Lit/Culture), this was the format for the exam I took today to show an appropriate general knowledge of the subject.
Part One: Identifications. Briefly discuss ten of the following fifteen terms [expected: one full paragraph, with reference to importance to culture, time frame if applicable, and either works written by or scholarship on cited by scholar.]
Lysias
elegy
hymn
Greek Anthology
Dionysius of Halicarnassus
Ibycus
parabasis
Epic cycle
Gorgias
ktisis poetry
Cyclops
Panegyricus
Simonides
Old Oligarch
Euboian Discourse
Part Two: Essays. Write three essays, one selected from Group A, one from group B, and one from Group C. IN each of your essays, be sure to support generalizations with specific examples. Allot 45 minutes to each of these three essays.
A. Poetry
1. "Hellenistic poets were not only deeply attentive to and influence by archaic and classical poets, but also incredily innovative in terms of the type, style, and subject matter of their own works." Discuss with reference to four poets.
2. "Greek poets both contend with and pay homage to Homer and Hesiod." Discuss this assertion with reference to four poets not all from the same period
B. Prose
1. Discuss the emergence of biography in Greek literature and its relation to other literary genres with reference to four prose authors not all from the same period.
2. How do Greek prose writers engage with and/or critique the political regimes under which they produce their works? Discuss with reference to four prose authors not all from the same period.
C. Poetry and Prose
1. Greek culture is preoccupied with bestowing praise and leveling blame. Discuss with reference to two prose authors and two poets not all from the same period.
2. Greek literature regularly explores the power, dynamics, and ramifications of eros. Discuss how two prose authors and two poets, not all from the same period, portray eros and how this reflects their larger purposes.
After three hours of writing off the top of my head, I had a solid 4788 words on that word doc (thank god they let us use computers). We're also required to use a pseudonym for our tests, so the graders don't know who's work they're looking at. This is occasionally rather silly, such as when I was the only examinee taking the MA Latin Literature exam (WONDER WHO THIS COULD BE), but it's a fun tradition to pick interesting names. This time, I was Lizzie Borden. Because the exam was gonna get killed, but it may or may not have been by me.
EVERYTHING AFTER THIS IS INFO FOR THE WAY TOO INTERESTED STOP STALKING MY BRAIN
So! My choices on the exam involved not talking about the Greek Anthology, because that was clearly put on the exam for the benefit of one student who really, really likes it against whom I would not measure up on that ID, leaving out an ID on Dionysius of Halicarnassus, but talking about him in the essays to prove I was familiar with his critical works, not ever mentioning Ibycus. Fuck that. Ktisis poetry I didn't have enough authors of off the top of my head to make worth the ID and the Euboian Discourse I had only ever skimmed.
As for essays, the Hellenistic poetry one was much, much easier due to its more compact outline. Discussing Callimachus's Aitia and Hecale bought me a the ability to skimp a little on the paragraph on Moschus, which I hid between decent chunks on Apollonius and Theocritus. I later found out that the other people who answered that question had either used Menander as a substitute for Moschus or not been able to think of 4 important enough, and talked about epigram in general as a weak 3rd paragraph (exactly where I hid my bit on Moschus).
For prose, I hadn't quite thought enough about biography while reviewing to do that as easily as political discussion, choosing to forego mentioning the Old Oligarch as I'd already identified that above. Instead, I used Thucydides for late 5th/early 4th century commentary, juxtaposed Democritus and Isocrates (using the Panegyricus again; not the best move) for mid 4th century, and skipped into the second century to talk about Polybius under the rule of the Roman Empire.
The mixed question, I chose to do the theme of eros, as I immediately had 6 works spring to mind and kept thinking of more as I was writing, that I could have swapped in. Discussed Gorgias's Encomium of Helen, the works of Sappho, the allusions to eros/marriage/pederasty in Pindar's Odes, and, of course, Plato's Symposium. Also threw in a reference to Hesiod's Theogony in the opening paragraph, just as a quick nod to that.
Overall, don't think it was high pass-worthy and definitely didn't say anything new and interesting, but it was at least passable and I should be 1/5 exams down for the PhD before I can start my dissertation. Hopefully 2/5 down by December, when I'll be taking my Latin Reading List translation exam. Meaning they've had a list of things I should have been reading all along that I'm to know well enough to translate dictionary-free in December. I suppose I should get cracking on reading that list.
tl;dr I'm a nerd.

Unintentional Absence (I don't hate you all)
Posted 12 years agoI'm taking a brief study break to let folks know that my general disappearance isn't intentional or an official disappearance or any such nonsense! Besides having a major exam for my PhD tomorrow (know Greek literature. All of it. Enough to talk knowledgeably on any given subject. You have three hours), my computer also died on the last day of IFC and is still in blank-screen mode. While I managed to salvage the hard drive and put it onto an external, I still have no personal computer for general use and am making do with the office computers for now.
So! If you've noticed I haven't been talking to you on Skype, everybody's in the same boat! It's not just you. If you want to chat, I do have a phone that sometimes (all the time) gets looked at.
Hopefully back more to the online world soon.

Moving Yarn Art Gallery!
Posted 12 years agoI'll give a real journal on IFC and how all that went later, but first some business!
I will no longer be uploading rug punches or other craft-work to this profile. If you're interested in seeing what art I come out with or other business related things, I'll be moving all business posts to
LiirkaLimited over the next week!
Go check out my work there! This is going to be a purely personal account.
Because unsuspecting commissioners don't need to be treated to Janu porn.
Whether or not they'd enjoy it.

Day Ten: One confession
I discovered furry erotica in my early teens mostly due to Obsessive Compulsion. I couldn't handle the bodily fluids of live porn, but hentai and other drawn erotica didn't trigger the revulsion and stress reactions.

Posted 12 years agoI'll probably be off the grid for the next few days, as my home home is unequipped with internet save a single broadband connection in my parents' bedrom. My younger brothers usually get priority on borrowing that computer.

6. Sitting on my piano at home is a gold record with my name on it for work I did with the TSO.

7. That was in another country. And besides, the wench is dead.
6. Still wish I'd gotten there a little bit sooner, instead of waiting until just before graduation.

4. Knight to E5. Bwahahahahahaha

Day One: Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now
Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight ways to win your heart.
Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day Five: Six things you wish you’d never done.
Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever)
Day Seven: Four turn offs.
Day Eight: Three turn ons.
Day Nine: Two smileys that describe your life right now.
Day Ten: One confession
Day Two
9: Though the magic of boarding school, I've been living mostly away from home for 14 years (since age 9).
8: I've been to 38 states and 5 countries.
7: I'm the middle of 5 children and have 33 first cousins.
6. Sitting on my piano at home is a gold record with my name on it for work I did with the TSO.
5. I've never lived in one town for more than 4 years, so far hitting MA, NH, VT, NY, NJ, MN, and IN for states.
4. I only joined the fandom a little over a year ago.
3. I'm the tallest member of my extended family with the exception of my brother, who's the same height.
2. I'm currently employed teaching Latin at a university while studying as a grad student in Classical Studies.
1. I've performed in many of the major concert halls in the country and hold a bachelor's degree in collaborative piano.
Day One
10. I do mean it when I say "anything I can do," even though I know you're afraid of abusing our friendship
9. Thank you for always being there and finding my exploits of interest, dear, darlingest, lesbian wife of mine.
8. Sorry about that. I'm realizing more and more that I underestimate people's emotional investment in me, and seeing it tear you up like that is part of what woke me up.
7. That was in another country. And besides, the wench is dead.
6. Still wish I'd gotten there a little bit sooner, instead of waiting until just before graduation.
5. If you think I'm being awkward around you, it's because I'm really, really bad at reversing sexual relationships back to friendships. So...I am being awkward.
4. Knight to E5. Bwahahahahahaha
3. I really only have one question left and I was very close to asking it recently. Next time we have a moment, I need an answer.
2. Wish you were still around. Hope to hear from you soon.

INDY FUR CON
Website:
http://www.indyfurcon.com/
Transportation type:
"Car" of the Chevy Prism variety. The quotation marks are well deserved
Hotel you're staying at:
Sheraton - Main!

Thursday night - Sunday evening
8/8-8/11
Rooming with:
farell and a few more that I'm still figuring out
Gender:
Nope
Description (out of suit):
5ft 11in; hair at least highlighted if not an interesting color (blue/green/violet/etc...)
Often to be found running around in skirts at cons
Fursuit(s):
the deer with the really wide hips
Relationship Status:
delightfully ambiguous as per usual
Who you will be with a majority of the time:
I haven't the foggiest idea yet
Main purpose for attending:
World Domination. Also, my first repeat attendance at a con
Where you usually eat:
My hotel room
Parties:
If I'm invited! (Please!)
Fursuiting:
Heck yes
Daily activities:
Fursuit, femme-boy it up, possibly be in the Artist's Alley (oh god, oh god, oh god)
Nightly Activities:
Fursuit, femme-boy it up, find myself in random room parties
What time I usually go to bed and get up:
Based on recent cons? Bed between 4:00 and 7:00, up at 11:00. This should change
Do you talk out of suit:
Better question: do you shut up out of suit? Answer: if otherwise occupied
Do you talk in suit:
Nope! I like my suit as a silent character, other than the squeaky-door noises
Rules of engagement out of suit:
I am not ready to be engaged. Conversation/hugs are excellent though! just be respectful and leave breathing room.
Rules of engagements in suit:
Hugs are always a go; chasing me down is fine if you do a cartoony prowl and slow-rev up so I have forewarning.
Can I dance with you:
if you can get me on the dance floor!
Can I take pictures with you:
Hell yes!
Best communication medium to reach you:
Cell-phone is really about it, as my phone doesn't talk to space. Feel free to ask for my number!
