Home from MFF: Recap and Recognitions
Posted 13 years agoThe sheer amount of exhaustion I feel right now can only be counted as one of the best feelings I've had in ages. This weekend was amazing and every bit of lost sleep was definitely worth it. MFF was only my second con, but trying to compare it to IFC would be simply impossible. For one, I knew so many more people going into the con and had fantastic friends to hang out with all the time. For another, I got to stay Thursday through Monday, instead of showing up halfway through Saturday.
And even bigger, I was wearing my own fursuit this time around and I can't even begin to describe how much of a difference that made. I became so much more outgoing when clad in a deer's hide than I ever am as myself and met some great people.
For those who don't know, I spent a good chunk of the past month cutting, gluing, sewing, and swearing at the project of making my own fursuit. Frustrated though I was a lot, and ready though I was to just go with a partial at first, I'm glad I pushed through and got the suit in wearable, if unfinished condition. I'll post pictures as soon as I have some. ^^ Hoping to get antler nubs and spots added at least before next con, if not hair.
Besides all the suiting I did, I got in the first round of the Furoticon tournament (cut short by my desire to finish shaving down my suit head and hands) and got a couple commissions I'll post ASAP. Need to get to a scanner.
And now all the specific thanks:
HUGE HUGE HUGE Thanks to
keyoki for all the guidance and support on making the suit. Without him, I most likely wouldn't have had a suit, much less be able to say I made it myself. Also thanks for helping finish trimming the muzzle foam when I couldn't figure out how to fix it.
chepi was an incredible friend throughout, lending some time and advice on the hand-sewing (the whole suit is hand-sewn on the seams). She was also an incredible roommate along with 
krylancelo and one of my old college roommates, who will likely be coming back to another con! Insert CONvert pun here.
My physical presence was largely thanks to
shiia whose car managed to fit all my junk in it alongside the both of us and 
cr4shb01. I also look forward to seeing her rendition of Aikore some time in the future.
My wonderfully cute/sexy Janu sketch that I'll post later this week was done by farorenightclaw and was encouraged through my embarrassment at commissioning such a piece by xyr spouse 
langston.

A Political Journal
Posted 13 years agoAs most of my dealings with life, my view on politics is shaped by my study of Classical civilization. This knowledge leads me to the conclusion that there really is nothing new under the sun; the only change in the political landscape between 2500 years ago and now is exactly what technology we're using to promote or fight our viewpoints. In light of all the political posts and dismay over the political landscape, herein are the words Thucydides wrote at the tail end of the 5th century BCE, in a reported speech by Cleon:
You have become regular speech-goers, and as for action, you merely listen to accounts of it; if something is to be done in the future, you estimate the possibilities by hearing a good speech on the subject, and as for the past you rely not so much on the facts which you have seen with your own eyes as on what you have heard about them in some clever piece of verbal criticism. Any novelty in an argument deceives you at once, but when the argument is tried and proved you become unwilling to follow it; you look with suspicion on what is normal and are slaves of every paradox that comes your way. The chief wish of each one of you is to be able to make a speech himself, and, if you cannot do that, the next best thing is to compete with those who can make this sort of speech by not looking as though you were at all out of your depth while you listen to the views put forward, by applauding a good point even before it is made, and by being as quick at seeing how an argument is going to be developed as you are slow at understanding what in the end it will lead to. What you are looking for all the time is something that is, I should say, outside the range of ordinary experience, and yet you cannot even think straight about the facts of life that are before you. Pimpin' Concerts and Studios
Posted 13 years agoReal update for once! Some of you know that I like to spend a good part of my 'free' time singing and playing piano and whatnot. Well, this Sunday, Voces Novae will be giving a concert at the Oliver Winery at 3:00 including poetry reading and a number by the Raging Grannies group. We're kind of a motley assembly of singers, but the music will be fun! Drinking songs and all.
