My Character: Jiyu Mizukaze
Posted 17 years agoFamily-
Where were you born?
On a slaver ship at sea. (or so I’ve been told).
What was your family life like?
My real parents were killed when the slave ship we were on sank in a storm. I was found stuffed in a barrel, washed up on shore by a fisherman. The only family I’ve known since I was a baby are the women at the geisha house to whom I was given. They were kind to me and each one of them took on the role of a mother/sister. Even though I was their servant (or slave to some) they taught me their ways and gave me a brief education in reading and writing. Their mother (or head geisha) was the one I was given to explicitly and she always oversaw my training as a servant. Even though she allowed the girls to show me basic geisha skills, she always made sure I knew my place and that I remember it, especially in front of our benefactor. It was a hard working and sheltered existence. I was very rarely let out of the house. But under my circumstances it could have been a much worse childhood.
Who is in your family?
There was Mother, Myotsu, who was the head geisha. Two other geisha, Himono and Korin , and one younger girl still in training named Rhinata. Then there was myself and another servant girl five years older than me named Pai. She wasn’t a slave like I was. She was the cousin of Rhinata and had come to live there as a servant because of the opportunities the job offered.
As for a father figure the only one that could come close would be our Benefactor, Honjo-sama. I never saw much of him except for the times he’d come to the house to inspect his investment and visit with Myostu. In a way he was father to us all, he made sure we had enough for food and that the girls were in good health.
What do they do?
Myotsu was the head geisha and was responsible for the running of the household and managing the accounts. She wasn’t one of the beauties among geisha, even in her youth, one would call her plain but she had a keen mind and in part was responsible for the booming silk industry our Island enjoyed.
Himono and Korin were new but full geisha. They were popular among the foreign merchant crowd and were frequently called upon for their talents. Himono specialized in musical instruments while Korin was a spectacular dancer, they made quite a team when it came to entertaining foreign entrepreneurs. The two of them were also Rhinatas’ big Sisters (tutors).
Rhinata was quite beautiful and showed promise as a Geisha. She was frequently called upon to model for various artisans. Having her likeness posted all over the city was a great way to increase her popularity. However despite her beauty she had little natural grace and no ear for music, a great disappointment for Himono and Korin. Since beauty doesn’t last forever Myotsu included long hours of math and political etiquette in Rhinatas training. She was passable but no where near as adept as Myotsu. Rhinata did become a geisha and enjoyed popularity among the merchant crowd as their ornamental flower and a splendid model for the silks they traded.
Pai was as compassionate as a water snake. Pai and Rhinata came from a small seaside town out of the way of the world. Seldom in their lives there did they have contact with other races and superstitions were not uncommon. Part of the geisha training is learning the ways and appeals of other races, Rhinata took to it well but Pai being a servant wasn’t required to learn such things and remained stubborn in her beliefs. Basically I was like a trained housecat to her, any chores we did together were performed in stiff silence and for the most part she pretended I didn’t exist.
Honjo-sama acted as our benefactor and financed the geisha house. He was also the sole patron to Myotsu, basically she was his mistress. Honjo owned a profitable shipping company; his fleet handled most of the import and export of silk.
Where do they live?
Our house was located on a small Island off the northern coast of the central Island of Nipon. Myotsu is dead now; her dying wish was that I be freed on my sixteenth birthday, it took a few months for my slave papers to be found, so great was Honjo-samas’ love and grief for Myotsu that he willingly spent a small fortune to see that her wish be fulfilled. I left the Island shortly after my freedom was granted by Honjo-sama and have never returned there even though I do visit Nipons’ Central Island frequently. As far as I know, Korin, Himono, Rhinata and Pai are still living on at the geisha house under the care of Honjo-sama.
What is your current relationship to your family?
Since I left the geisha house I have had no contact with them. When Myotsu died so did everything that made us a family. Himono and Korin became the new head geishas making Rhinata first geisha in the household. Two new acolytes were brought in and were as thrilled as Pai to find a felinae living amongst them. Pai took on the role of head servant and hired another young girl. When I was freed she went to great lengths to make sure I was fired as a servant. Himono and Korin were sad to see me go but they had the house to think of and didn’t object. I miss the memories from Myotsus’ time but I have no memories from after her death that would cause me to return there.
Have you started your own family?
I have past the age most girls would start a family but I have had no wish to settle down. After all I have only known freedom for a few years; I have too much exploring to do before I consider marriage and children. Also, I want to find out what became of the rest of my family first so that I have a family name to give my children.
Are there any family secrets?
I suppose I was treated like one at the geisha house. Slavery was kind of a hush-hush topic on our Island, only the wealthy merchants owned a couple and it was strict etiquette that servants or slaves are of the same race as the master. Since our Island dealt heavily in trade, for a company to have a slave of a different race would be insulting to visiting merchants that might be of the same race. A touchy and difficult matter which made it rare for a geisha house to have one, in fact ours was the only house to keep a slave. On the rare occasions when I was allowed to run an errand outside I wore a cloak and full-length dress. When we had visitors at the house I was usually kept busy doing chores in the back or kept up in my room in the attic.
As the story goes (Myotsu wanted me to know the truth of my origins as much as possible) an illegal slaver ship foundered one stormy night just off our coast. The next morning a fisherman found me, later to be known as the only survivor. A felinae kitt, branded a slave, floating in a barrel of tea leaves. It’s assumed my parents must have stashed me in there in hopes of saving me. I was brought back to Honjo-sama who owned the section of coastline I was found upon. He might have freed me then but my papers had gone down with the ship so instead he gave me to his new mistress, Myotsu and swept the matter under the carpet
My own secret or thing I prefer not to mention is my slave brand on my right shoulder. I wear a scarf over it even under my clothes. I’ve learned it’s not wise to advertise that I was once a slave. I also keep my slave papers next to my person at all times.
Who is your favorite relative?
Myotsu made us family, she was strict and ran a tight household but she was fair and cared about my welfare and upbringing. She knew that I couldn’t help being a slave but society had made me such and certain rules must then be followed, she did bend them whenever possible though. She was the only mother I knew.
Who is your least favorite relative?
Pai was never a sister figure to me but she was my least favourite member of our household. She was the only one who did treat me like a slave. When Korin and Himono failed in teaching Rhinata music and dance, they began teaching me the basics for fun. As it went I had a natural talent for it as do many of my race. Pai took my aptitude as a direct insult to her cousin and hated me all the more.
Career-
What is your profession?
I suppose I’m a passable artist, I have a good hand for art and sometimes do decorations on objects and simple portraits. It’s given me income at any rate. I also greatly enjoy dancing and music, I take every opportunity I get in my journeys to learn more. Many a time have I camped with gypsies and enjoyed a night of music and dance.
For a time when my freedom was still so new to me and the world a more dangerous place than expected, I spent half a year with an old potter who turned out to be a retired scholar of sorts. I helped him with his pottery: painting and cleaning the shop mostly, and in return he taught me some basic spells to defend myself with and gifted me with some advanced spell scrolls that I hope to have the skill to use some day.
Where and how were you educated?
My education mostly came from living in the geisha house. I was taught basic reading and writing as well as dance and music. After I was freed an old Potter taught me some spell casting and the rest has been learning as I go. My childhood was quite sheltered so my curiosity can get me into trouble sometimes but thankfully I’ve made some friends that have helped get out of it again.
Have you ever done anything else for a living?
No, I was a slave for most of my life and now I’m just a wandering traveler in search of life experiences and my origins.
Why did you leave your old job?
After I was freed, Pai, who had become the head of the household servants, saw to it that I was fired. My presence would have caused too much disharmony and even Himono and Korin, my older sisters, felt it best for me to go.
Who do you work with?
For now I work alone, right now, roaming the land, following the wind suites me fine.
Relationships-
What things, people, and ideas do you hate the most?
I detest anything to do with slavery. Granted my existence as a slave was by far not as harsh as some but I still have no love or understanding for those who practice it. I generally steer clear of Slavers, even though I’m free now, it’s not unknown for a Slaver to capture an ex-slave and burn their papers. I’d kill for my freedom and would rather die than be a slave again. I’ll defend another’s freedom as well and will not hesitate to fight if confronted with a Slaver, amateur though I am.
What things, people, and ideas do you like the most?
I love Wind, Water, Storms, the essences of freedom. I’ll also try anything once as long as it doesn’t harm myself or others. People of like mind or hard to come by but once found can be lots of fun!
Which person or groups do you respect the most?
Well I used to respect priests, at least the ones on my Island. Sometimes they’d come by the house looking for offerings for the various gods of the sea and storms. They were always kind to me and the only people I didn’t have to hide from. It was custom for them not to mention anything they saw within the households they visited. Station and status were of no importance to them, everyone was equal in their eyes. Sometimes they’d bring me sweets; they were like kind grandfathers to me.
When I first visited a small town after I was freed, a group of priests came by the tavern and asked if anyone would like to join in their ceremony to the god of storms. I of course obliged, likening these priests to the ones on the Island. It turned out that they were trying to focus the storms away from their homeland on to this land instead. Later the Earth spirits of the land awoke and were furious due to the increase in storms and tried to kill all those that had taken part in the ceremony. By then the priests had fled leaving us to deal with the aftermath.
So my respect for priests has lessened some what but I’ll always remember the ones on my Island with fondness.
Which person or groups do you fear the most?
The Slavers. They are a race that explicitly deal in slavery, it is the backbone of their culture. Just to think of them makes my blood run cold. If I were ever caught by one of the Slavers… there would be no question… if I could not break free immediately, I’d take my own life. Their reputation is known to all slaves. Yet this fear drives me to become stronger so that the unthinkable will never happen.
Which person or groups are you most loyal to?
I am loyal to the Wind, it has always led me well. There are some friends who I would lend aid to as well.
Who do you really trust?
Myself mostly. I do have close friends and I do trust them to an extent. But I prefer to be responsible for my own choices and actions. If something goes wrong then I only have myself to blame.
Who are your friends?
I have met a few interesting people that I can call friends. Some Orcs actually were quite friendly and helpful but I’m still a bit unsure about them, they’re likely to eat a friend if they get too drunk and the fact that their hut locks from the inside was a bit unnerving when I visited it. Thankfully they let me out again. My two closest friends would be Tygrax and Reithie.
How close are you to your friends?
Most of the time it’s a long distance relationship as we are each following our own paths in life. I’d be there for them in times of trouble and for sure defend them in battle. My friends are a lot worldlier than I anyways and can probably take care of themselves. I haven’t told any of them about being a slave, I’m not ready to do that yet.
How well do they know you?
They know I’m from Nipon, I haven’t said where. Like I said, I don’t spread around the fact that I was a slave. If a relationship ever gets that serious I’ll deal with it then but they don’t need to know now.
Are you protecting someone or something?
I protect my slave papers with my life. Also I protect myself. If I tell them I was a slave will they act like Pai? Will I cease to exist for them; will I be lower in their eyes? Will they betray me?
Who do you live with?
I travel alone but a lot of the time I end up bunking with a group or family. I have no permanent place of residence, just a few favourite stop-overs.
Who was your first love?
That experience still lies in my future.
Who is your best friend?
I had an imaginary friend when I was little. A fox named Tamrin. Not a Canid, just a regular fox but I suppose he was magic in the sense he could talk. He would find shiny treasures for me and would sneak out of the house at night and return in the morning to tell me what was happening in the world. After I was freed I came upon a stuffed fox doll in a marketplace and bought it. It goes everywhere with me, kind of like a good luck charm.
Who is your worst enemy?
Growing up it was Pai, she’d do everything in her power to make my life miserable. Now, it’s Slavers and their ilk.
Who is your confidante?
I guess, it’s still Tamrin, you never can get too old for an imaginary friend. Tygrax and Reithie are trustworthy too even though I haven’t told them about my slavery past.
Who would bail you out?
I hope one of the new friends I’ve met in my travels would if the price weren’t too high but for the most part I take care of myself.
Are you a disappointment to anyone?
Not anyone important. There was this one felinae I met who was down right rude because I didn’t jump into battle with a bunch of strangers. I guess my lack of bloodlust was disappointing to him. I try to steer clear of affairs that don’t affect me or my friends. Maybe felinae are supposed to be more bloodthirsty, and maybe that’s why we were given nine lives.
Mental self-
Describe your moral code.
Everyone deserves freedom. I’ll fight for my freedom till my last breath.
How mercenary are you?
Not in the least. Taking money to fight another’s battle, never. I’ll fight for what I believe in or if a friend is in danger but never just for money, I might as well hand over my slave papers.
Would you kill innocents?
Never. Not even a Slaver whelp.
How easily do you kill?
I haven’t killed anybody myself, well I do hunt, but I’ve never killed a sentient being. I hope I never will but I like to think I’d be able to if the need arose. I have helped friends in battle though and they’ve killed.
Do you have any goals?
I want to discover my origins and what happened to the rest of my family.
What kind of personality do you have?
Playful, innocent, curious, adventuresome, independent.
I seldom appear sad before people, I learned to conceal it. Pai would win if I cried in front of her. Also, life is short, why be sad when you can be happy? I am friendly right off the bat; I assume most people are good. They’d have to do something fairly serious to get on my bad side.
I’m a good person I think, so I’m always surprised when some random creature wants to try and kill me, I kind of take it personal, like what did I ever do to them?
I also get upset when my honesty is questioned since I barely ever tell a lie, except when concerning my slavery. I own up to my own mistakes and always take responsibility.
What special qualities do you possess as a person?
I’m honest, open minded and very tolerant. And strangely, for a felinae, I like water.
Are their certain things that you can’t or won’t do? Why?
I won’t be a slave/servant in any shape, way or form. I’ll never wear a collar or leash like some felinae do. I’ll never submit to something I’m against.
Oh, and despite being a felinae I can’t see in the dark that well.
What annoys you the most?
Clingy males! It was a new experience when I first started on my travels and at first flattering. But I am no one’s property and no one has the right to my body or personal space. I have had males try to court me and stupidly get in fights about who has what right over me. It’s enough to drive a gypsy mad!
What do you think is your worst quality?
My stubbornness and curiosity have gotten me into trouble plenty of times, thank goodness I’ve got nine lives! But my worst quality could be my anger. If something seriously goes against my grain I’ll see red and go after whatever it is.
One time when I was eight, Pai went into my personal things without asking and took something that had been a gift from Korin and Himono. When I confronted her about it she said that I’m a slave and have no belongings therefore she can go through my things whenever she pleases. The next thing I knew she was on the ground with a bloody nose, I had my possession back and was off and running. I hid it where no one would find it then went back and owned up to my actions. I got five lashes and Pai was told to stay out of the slave quarters unless she wanted the added task of cleaning it as well. Pai never took anything from me again.
Oh, and I have a slight catnip addiction.
What do you think is your best quality?
I listen very well. I will hear anyone’s’ story no question or comment until they’re done. And I can keep secrets if need be.
What are your three most common dreams/nightmares?
1) Being captured by a Slaver and prevented from freeing myself or killing myself. Taken to their land I find my parents but they are but husks of their once living selves. They tell me to give up now; it’ll be easier that way. Their fate awaits me.
2) A ship at sea. I’m locked below and the ship is sinking, no one will let me out no matter how loud I cry and yet I see crewmen on deck, a few feet away. The water fills the cabin and I’m immersed and there are bodies floating around me with wide mouths and terror filled eyes. As the ship sinks I hear bangs and thumps on the outside of the hull, they’re sharks wanting in to feast.
3) I meet a felinae on the side of the road. I tell him I’m looking for my family. He laughs and says I’ve passed them by many times, he was wondering when I’d finally stop and ask directions. He takes me down a wooded path that opens out into a valley, down below I see a clan of felinae immersed in celebration. I walk down into the crowd and they turn and welcome me, saying they wondered when I’d finally join them. My parents are there and all the rest of my family, we feast and dance and fall asleep happy. I wake up in the morning feeling content like never before. I look around and find myself alone in the middle of a field of wild flowers. Beside me, pinned by a rock, is a note. It says “we have shown you the way now the rest is up to you”. I’m filled with hope and happiness that somewhere my family waits for me.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
For a time I dreamed of being a geisha like Himono and Korin but matured out of it. Then all I wanted was freedom, as things got worse between Pai and I all I wanted was the freedom to find my real family.
Did you realize your dream? Why?
Only halfway, I’m free to find my family now I just have to do so.
I am free because of Myotsus’ dying wish but unfortunately my slave papers once found held little information regarding my family. The slavers that wrote them were slack in protocol, Honjo spent a fortune in bribes to have them made legal and even had to pay for every year he owned and got free work out of me. Then there was the payment to set me free. I am grateful for that alone, information or not.
Do you have regrets?
I wish I could have been at Myotsus’ side when she died. Also when Pai fired me I was allowed little time to gather my things let alone say my goodbyes’. I wish I could have said goodbye to Korin and Himono properly.
What makes you cry?
The thought of returning to slavery.
That my family is dead and my search is futile.
Myotsus’ death.
What makes you laugh?
The orcs and their antics (the none harmful ones).
Catnip
Too much ale
Sometimes my own jokes.
Practical jokes.
Reithie and Tygrax.
What do you wish you could do that you cannot?
Fight confidently with spells. I hate being such a novice with them, my aim is pretty bad and sometimes I’ll cast the wrong spell. I just got to keep practicing. Also I’d like to learn the use of a weapon at some point. Spells aren’t always effective.
What is your secret dream, the one goal or desire that you keep from everyone, maybe even yourself?
I want to be rich and wealthy; to prove to everyone that an ex-slave has merit. I want to show up on my home Island as a wealthy merchant and surprise Korin, Himono and Rhinata. It is a selfish wish but it does pass my mind occasionally.
And of course, first and foremost, I want to find my family and perhaps start a family of my own.
What is your worst fear?
Slavery, having my freedom stripped away from me after tasting it for this long.
If you could change the world in any one way, what would it be?
Abolish slavery; no one should live without freedom.
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
Find a quiet place in the morning and make peace with my unfinished business then party and feast with my friends all night but not tell them of course.
What hurt or insult will you never forgive?
Pai casting me out. I had lived longer in that house, and cared more for the people there. She contrived to have me cast out and Korin and Himono didn’t even object. I don’t regret leaving and would never return to live there even if circumstances changed but it was the hurt of that moment that I can’t forget or forgive.
What are you like when you are drunk?
Mischievious, overly playful, very happy and I’ll laugh at anything. Extremely tipsy.
What are you like when you are grieving/mourning?
Quiet. I seek a place of solitude. If I’m around people I find myself trying to be cheerful but it comes across half-assed.
What are you like when you are moody or angry?
I snap at people, my tolerance level goes way down. My tongue can be quite sharp. I resort to verbal lashings rather than physical blows unless I’m really provoked.
What are you like when you are celebrating?
Refer to the drunk question.
Physical self-
What is your race?
Felinae
Why did you choose this race? For the bonuses?
Because they are playful and free. Cats have an air of independence and dignity. I’m curious, mischievous and love to eat fish! And yes for the bonuses, if it weren’t for the nine lives I’d sunder first time out. Curiosity does kill the cat.
What is your general appearance (manner of dress, etc)?
A snow leopard with blue eyes. Slave symbol branded into right shoulder. Shoulder length dark hair.
Clothes: Usually blue/black/white. Prefer Niponese styles but occasionally will throw in something new that I picked up in my travels.
Accessories: Cloth pouch. Two cloth fans (blue) for dancing. Tamrin the stuffed fox. Slave papers. Spell book, drawing tools.
Where do you live?
I have no permanent residence, I travel till I get tired then sleep under the stars or if I’m lucky I find a nice tavern or Inn to stay at. Sometimes people will loan me the use of their barns or loft, whatever goes.
How do you decorate your space?
Usually I bring a swath of cloth that can act as a curtain or makeshift tent if need be. I have sleeping furs and some everlasting candles I obtained from a gypsy bazaar. I might throw up some of my art pieces if I’m staying for awhile.
Do you save money or spend it like water?
I save when I can, but I’m not opposed to having a good time every now and then.
Are you saving for something?
I always keep a little tucked away in case of emergency. Also I hope to find an Historian that might know of my family. I hear they are few and far between, and expensive.
Miscellaneous-
What is your name (full birth name as well as nicknames and titles)?
No idea, my slave papers did not bear a name just a number, Honjo-sama added my given name Jiyu to the documents to further authenticate them. Myotsu gave me the name Jiyu, maybe as an affirmation, I don’t know. My name means freedom or liberty. Later I tacked on the surname of Mizukaze, a name I made up by combining the Niponese words for wind and water. I’m still looking for information on my family name. Some people call me Kitty because they can’t pronounce my name, I don’t mind.
What is your favorite color?
Blue, black and red.
What is your favorite food/drink?
Food: Fish/seafood, catnip, chocolate
Drink: Sake, cream, anything taken in shots.
What place would you most like to visit?
I’d like to see the north lands some day and glimpse the icy peaks of the mountains there. It is a long journey and quite dangerous I hear. I know a barbarian from those parts but I’ll have to be careful while I visit, I hear some of the barbarians like to wear felinae furs.
What pastime ,that you participate in regularly, do you most enjoy?
Drawing, dancing, drinking.
What pastime ,that you participate in regularly, do you least enjoy?
Chores, traveling on rainy days.
What is your favorite form of art?
Ink-brush painting, life drawing, Niponese calligraphy.
What is the most important thing you have ever done?
Left home and began my search for my family.
What is the worst thing you have ever done?
Helped kill in battle. Wrong or right, it’s still killing.
Does anyone know?
Yes, it doesn’t seem to be such a big deal to them though, I guess I’m just a country bumpkin.
What religion do you follow? Why?
None, life is too short and full of diversity to lock my mind down to one faith, one way of thinking.
Are you pious?
No
What is your most treasured possession? Why? Where you get it?
The dancing-bells that Himono and Korin gave me and my stuffed fox doll. The bell was for my dance practices, I had to move without making the bells jingle. The fox doll reminds me of the imaginary friend I had while growing up. I picked it up at a market in the east. And of course my slave papers that Honjo-sama obtained for me. Without them if anyone were to see my brand I could be imprisoned or executed as a runaway slave.
Do you have a good luck charm? What is it? How did you get it?
My fox doll named after my childhood, imaginary friend, Tamrin. I bought it.
What do you do in your spare time?
Climb a tree, explore or enjoy the company of friends at the bar or tavern. Sometimes I’ll walk out into a wide open space at night and just listen. I also like to read, dance and draw.
Where do you prefer to spend your time?
Usually at a bar or tavern, somewhere with a fire. If it’s summer a nice tree with shade is a great place for a cat nap. If coincidence and distance are in my favour I enjoy the company of Tygrax and Reithie whenever I can.
Where do you feel safe?
The highest branch I can reach in a tree or snug inside a small space where no one will find me.
Is there anyplace you refuse to go?
Any dungeons or slave pens and lands that practice slavery. Ships if I can help it. I do have to travel on them sometimes but I’ll refuse to go below decks no matter the weather conditions.
What are your hobbies?
Dancing and drawing.
Where did you get your hobbies?
I learned dancing from Korin and Himono two of the geisha in our house. They just enjoyed teaching it and I enjoyed learning.
Drawing is something I’ve always been able to do. Sometimes when I’d get locked in my quarters for some bad deed or if we had visitors I’d pass the time by doodling on the floor boards under my bed roll with a charcoal stick. I often wonder if one of my real parents was an artist too?
What stupid things did you do when you were younger?
• Applied grease to the bottoms of Pais’ sandals. Unfortunately she slipped and crashed through a rather expensive silk-screen painting.
• Sharpened my claws on an old historical kimono by mistake; thankfully I was just a kitten then and wasn’t punished.
• Used an entire container of geisha face paint to try to cover my spots. Went a month on rice pudding to pay that one off.
• Took part in a ceremony that I had no idea what the gist of it was. Got chased by angry tree spirits later.
The list goes on but those are some of the highlights.
What one item would you risk your life to protect?
My Slave Papers.
Given a choice between all of the people you know, if you could only save one, who would it be?
That’s a tough one. I’ve met many new friends but the two closest to me are Tygrax and Reithie. I’d be there for them if I heard they were in trouble.
What one item do you wish you didn’t have, but feel obliged to keep anyway?
My slave papers, I wish I could toss them away and forget about my past. But if my brand is discovered and I have no papers I could become a slave again or be sentenced to death as a runaway.
