IS IT ART?
Posted 8 years agothis topic's popped up again a couple times lately, so I'm just gonna put my blunt opinion on it.
- and for everyone out there who's all about the feels. Read to the end, there's a feel good message in it.
THE QUESTION IS NOT VALID.
- This question is primarily used as a tool of the pretentious to either justify their own works or shut down those they deem UNWORTHY of being called artists.
- It's just philosophical masturbation.
There's a TON of problems with the question itself, so it's hard to know where to start when structuring a rant on this. So I'll just kinda hit a couple at random.
a) the parameters of defining art are extremely ill defined
From a realistic pragmatic perspective - it's impossible to come up with a definition that's actionable. Especially one that rules in everything that IS and rules out everything that ISN'T.
b) your college professors brought this up (or likely someone on youtube)
"Some ideas are so stupid that only an academic would think they're smart." For those of you who are graduated, think back on everything your professors said that turned out to be total horseshit.
They'll bring up the sideways urinal because that's clearly art or some shit like that. When really they're just looking to get people talking without actually presenting a solution or get anything done.
c) story time: art that isn't art
My dad used to work for the Air Force as a civilian contractor from the 60s through the 2010s (omg, trigger warning military. freakin' close minded lib plebs). More specifically he worked on design reviews and business approvals for ICBM projects. An interesting note was that some of the pieces had to be polished out by hand because the machinery at the time weren't precise enough (if I remember it was the balance plates for the gyroscopes). He got to see the manufacture of these small metal disc plates, and these kind worker women would take their ultra-smooth cloth and gently polish around the metal disc. They seemed to know exactly how many turns and how much pressure to apply to get it within specifications ... and they were able to do it reliably no sweat.
In his words: "I don't care what you say, that's an art form."
So yeah, just THINK for a moment about every time someone has brought this junk question up. It's usually for one of the following intentions...
- They didn't like how someone was getting ill-gained attention, so they attack the person by saying IT'S NOT ART.
- They try to indirectly bolster their own practice. And oh good hell is that ever popular if you try to talk to an american cartoonist about japanese animation.
- They're just pompous windbags thinking that dialogue in itself is with merit. (oh, people are listening? IT MUST BE IMPORTANT)
of course, call someone out on this and they'll back down from their argument in an arrogant contradiction of logic because THEY DIDN'T MEAN IT LIKE THAT.
Any rate ... here's the foot note to all this.
THE REAL QUESTION IS: Is it art WORTH PAYING FOR?
...
This is an actionable question! And I'll bounce it back to the prior statements.
a) the parameters? It's a lot easier to define if it's worth paying for or not. This will really piss off artists because it means that SOME ART ISN'T WORTH PAYING FOR. And egads, that's a blow to the ego.
b) what about the windbags? It provides an actionable solution. So if a college professor is all "are video games art?" you can get a myriad of responses ... but if you say "Are video games art worth paying for" suddenly you have a much more clear answer and it becomes harder to justify pure arthouse wankery titles. And it'll shut down those frustrating case samples like the sideways urinal: "no, of course it's not worth thousands of dollars to buy a urinal installed sideways. Don't be stupid."
c) art that isn't art? That's everywhere. There's an art to giving painless flushots. There's an art to being able to balance the accounting books right the first time. There's an art in being able to orchestrate and guide other people to pull off a $200 million cinematic blockbuster that's just plain good. This is art that's worth paying for.
But hey. The people who bring up the question of "is it art" are completely innocent. They didn't mean to be a pretentious asshole by any measure! I'm sure there's a long winded explanation that isn't worth listening too! ... that or you got roped into the discussion without realizing it was a sham to begin with.
What I'm saying is that this question of "is it art" is total bunk.
What's more important is that you're able to produce something that's worthy of the pay you're receiving. Study your craft, be good at it, listen to your audience/customers. To me, that's a far better qualifier of "art" than anything I've heard in the ivory tower of academia or online discussions.

Possibly leaving FA because shit
Posted 8 years agok, so ... twice yesterday I logged onto the site and saw hi def photographs of people shitting. Like, actual photos.
That's enough to make me delete my account from this site.
Is there a way to disable the front page "recently uploaded" section? If I have to even risk seeing that crap again I'm totally deleting my account from this site and not looking back.

Pixar's Coco - spoiler free review
Posted 8 years agoTL;DR = Through and Through it's on quality par with Disney Classic 2D animated. I'd rank it alongside Beauty and the Beast easy, no questions.
Ton of heart, balanced fare, and with basically none of the negatives you're probably thinking it will have.
Go see it!
... but if they show the Frozen short, leave the theatre for 15 minutes to get popcorn. that short is terrible and needs to be cut from existence.
==========
Saw it on Tuesday. Now that I've had time to digest it I can properly review it.
THE GOOD!
- It feels more like a Disney Classic Animated Film than a Pixar Film.
... and I mean the good Disney classics, like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, etc. (though it's definitely in the half-step lower that Beauty and the Beast was as opposed to pure gold Lion King / Aladdin)
- The music is amazing
I've had the main song of the film stuck in my head off and on and I've had no complaints about it.
... bonus points, they clearly wrote the lyrics in spanish first, then translated to english. Savvy viewers will be able to pick this up. Also, the soundtrack has Spanish language versions of the songs.
- The characters are fantastic
Expect fanart of Dante from me
- I seriously don't have complaints about it!
This is better explained through the subsequent section...
THE GOOD ASPECTS THAT ARE DERIVED FROM AVOIDING PITFALLS!
- It doesn't feel like a Pixar film!
Pixar films lately have been terrible. They also focus heavily on The Science of Sad (i.e. calculated forced tear jerkers or teaching kids the valuable life lesson of DEATH).
... It doesn't feel like that. The only times you might cry are when they touch on resonating tones (because the film is heavily family centric), but they aren't cry moments. So it's like Disney animated better films where you might get weepy eyed because it touches you. Not because they pull a narrative sucker punch.
- It isn't Book of Life!
I still haven't seen Book of Life myself. But I've read plot synopsis ... the two stories have basically nothing in common. So if that's a concern, don't worry about it.
- It doesn't follow the "but I wanna be an artist!" trope-line
I hate that plot line. Seriously, it's predictable sappy artuer wankery. Coco presents the foundations early on for plot twists later where it breaks away from that horrid story-flow. So it's not a "I'll show everyone artists are better than you pleb" story. ... but why it's different is spoiler territory, so I can't talk about it further.
- It isn't political!
This was a big concern going into it for me. And this is because of how pants-on-head retarded Hollywood liberals have become (let's politicize everything, get the facts wrong because we focus on feelings, and alienate everyone destroying our story!). There's absolutely ZERO political sentiments in there. That means it focuses on stuff that everyone can relate to ... WHICH MEANS IT'S A GOOD STORY.
- It doesn't get lost in its myth
This is a general concern about any film with magic elements: story tellers get sidetracked by the world/myth lore to the point where the audience can't connect. They keep it focused to a few simple/unique aspects that have a resonating quality to them ... which means you don't have to remember WHY something's important or get re-explained anything. It's stuff you likely care about.
THE BAD
FROZEN
it's that bad.
It's the only thing I regret and hate about the experience
And it frustrates me that they paired something so HORRENDOUSLY AWFUL with something so good.
The rumors are true about how terrible this thing is.
You'll wish everyone (except Oaken) dies by the time the "short" is over.
- rumor, that lines up with product, is that it was a made-for-tv special that got cancelled (because animated TV specials are almost always terrible)
- so it's 20 minutes, way too long
- the music is terrible garbage
- they made Olaf into a truly unbearable waste of space (actually impressive since I didn't mind him before)
- They made the clown the main character. That never works out.
- Olaf goes out literally looking for traditions. I mean ... WHAT. nobody can relate to this shit.
- you'll pray for a quick death and nail in the coffin to Frozen Fever ... and hopefully a cancellation of the sequel ... and with how bad this short is that just might happen
- the lesbian princess scrapped story line still hangs its awful uncanny head over the sisters (substantiated rumor is that Anna/Elsa lovers was plan A and it didn't test well, so they recast them as sisters ... and now you can't unsee it. ... Granted, I think it's more that Frozen isn't that interesting of a story, so having a divisive politicized element in a boring story will lose half your audience instantly as opposed to "THEY AREN'T READY!" but tumblr-ites will never accept that answer). This short did nothing to shift the dynamics away from Anna/Elsa being lovers ... which is totally weird since they're sisters.
- I mean, for example, Kristoff coulda been a bigger part in this to make Anna have an actual love interest (with an odd-couple romance) and further push that uncanny creepiness away ... BUT THEY ALSO COULD HAVE MADE A GOOD SHORT.
- i think i laughed a total of 3 times in 20 minutes
- I can't even imagine what the story boarding meetings where like when they crew had to try and sell each other on this garbage? Did those happen in a vacuum?
- We got this instead of a cool short like Piper. Screw you Disney. Screw you and your Frozen Fever!
- however, the sauna house guy, Oaken, makes a 60 second appearance. He's still an amazing character. ... that's the only good point of the short.
Out of spite, I'll pitch a better story line set in Frozen with the same parameters of it being a Holiday Special...
- Keep the intro gag that the sisters try to host a party and all the citizens go home to their families for christmas, leaving sisters without a party to host
- ... but then have Anna be torn between spending time with her boyfriend Kristoff (in some adorkable odd couple romance hijinks) or spend time with her sister ...
- and have Elsa feel a little bitter and jealous over this and sulk a little, with Olaf misunderstanding everything for comic dramatic irony
- then the sisters both get over their little argument, and apologize
- have a quiet ending where the characters spend time together (not some big chorus number full of painful sap)
- the idea is to strike tones with anyone who's dealt with marriage, significant others, and other time conflict of interests
- keep to 5-7 minutes and boom. Cute story, simple conflict that's resolved, stuff people can relate to
So yeah, IF they show the short. walk out for a 10-15 minute stretch. A lot of theater houses are complaining and are trying to figure out how to cut the short from their screenings. So you may not have to suffer.

Battlefront 2 - MP first impressions
Posted 8 years agoK, story time
- I have a brother who flips stuff. (buys extra, then sells it when it's sold out elsewhere)
- He pre-ordered 2 copies of Battlefront 2, prior to everything going to hell just prior to launch
- not being able to sell it, he sold it to me at the same discounted price he got. why not, eh?
SO, THAT OUT OF THE WAY
I'M ASSUMING YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT THE MICRO-TRANSACTION DEBACLE
- not gonna recap it here. go read it yourself
IS THE GAME ITSELF ANY GOOD
- If it weren't a damned cash grab, I'd be raving about how awesome it is.
- the game structure should be brilliant and fun. And the only thing that's holding it back are stat-changes to make it balanced.
IT'S STILL A CASH GRAB PROBLEM
- $60 cell phone game progression. full on. no joke. it goes further than that, though
- the balance issue is that the gap between advanced gear and noob gear is insulting (i.e. pressure to pay to keep up)
- So it turns into bad-MOBA snowball in FPS
- obvs loot boxes give you crap, and it's randomized across an insanely wide board. so chances of getting what you want are pitiful
- rumor is they match pay players against low-levels on purpose, not sure, but feels that way. Matches ALWAYS snowball
EVIDENCE OF IT BEING A GOOD GAME ARE IN THE DOGFIGHTS
- there's still some problems, yes, but this was largely untouched by the cashgrab hands at EA
- 3 classes of ships, plus heroes, and objective based maps make it a ton of fun to play.
- planetside battles leave a lot to be desired, but the space arenas make great use of the lore (some destroy objectives, for example, are INSIDE capital ship corridors that you have to fly through)
- also there's an arena in deathstar wreckage, which is awesome
THERE'S ACTUALLY HOPE
- unlike the Justice League review, there's a legit reason to hope for improvement
- the backlash of EA's handling of the debacle actually got to Disney because of the clever reddit tweet tactic "Disney Promotes Gambling Through Lootboxes"
- So Disney forced EA's hand to removing all in-game purchases (strong rumor confirmed via multiple sources) until they fixed it
- Disney further threatened to remove Star Wars rights entirely from EA if they don't turn it around (which would spell a stock price failure for the company)
- It's a safe bet that Disney is going to sign off / approve any DLC packs and rebalancing that EA puts out. Which should spell a better gaming experience
... the real question, however, is will it be too late? 'Cause EA's gonna have a lot of people to convince to pick up a "newly fairly balanced game"

JUSTICE LEAGUE (mostly) SPOILER FREE REVIEW
Posted 8 years agojumping back into this business of posting reviews. I'm gonna focus more on single page bits.
TL;DR = It's a pretty good movie. Find the rung on the ladder that's labeled "good movie" and place this one on the rung just below it.
While you won't mind actually seeing it, it's not exactly one to whole-heartedly recommend to people (hence the super weak 91mil domestic opener on a film with a 300-ish mil budget)
How does it compare to BvS?
- BvS is a total train wreck you can't look away from.
- JL is a car crash that you can walk away from and still laugh about.
... micro spoilers ahead. be ye warned ...
OVERVIEW
Snyder started off with a 3 hour brood-fest marathon, then was forced to reshoot a lot of the film for overall course direction. Then after he left for family reasons, Joss Weedon came on to finish it out. Surprisingly, even with all this, it doesn't really feel like a schizophrenic mess. Though if you watch it with a savvy eye you can spot which parts were done during which phase of production. (and mind you, this is downhill slope Joss ... so expect the same "missing something" you experienced in Ultron)
Also also, they trimmed it down to 2 hours 1 min. Basically cutting out a ton of fluff to get to the better parts faster (and I'm guessing a lot of the slower parts). This, coupled with the nack of banter Joss has, made it a pretty enjoyable experience ... just not a great one ... or a good one. But it is pretty enjoyable.
THE GOOD
Actors did their part and they did it well.
- Batfleck is still the best balanced bruce/batman, which is a shame since he's not going to be doing it any more due to the hollywood sex-land scandal thing going on. Oh well.
- The flash is one of the best parts, surprisingly
- Wondie's still good (even with her habit of weird faces)
- Aquaman ... my brothers and I think that Snyder wanted him to be OH SO COOL SO BADASS (which nobody buys) ... so Joss provided chinks in the armor to make him more human. So he's surprisingly cool
- Cyborg is the weakest link, but you can't blame the actor. There's subtle nuances about how he acts and thinks inhuman in a convincing way.
cinematography
- This is snyder's strong point. Most of it carried though, but a lot of it got cut or reshot
- But this got hampered by things below. so it's not as pretty as Snyder's other films.
It's enjoyable
- I didn't actively wish for the film to be over.
THE BAD
... again, remember, it's enjoyable despite all this. THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING.
action choreography
- Imagine a 6 year old with toys going "and then he goes BWVOOOM and he flies over here"
- That's a lot of what you get here. Broken physics, no consequences, tons of wtf, and a lot of repetition
- saw it with extended family, my mom fell asleep in the final battle because it was repeating itself a bit
snyder-isms
- pretty pictures without meaning
- a lot of it got cut, but there's still a good number in montages remaining
- also, threaten the children. that's another snyderism
- no Frank Miller whores, though
art direction
- is bad. Best summation is the badguy, Steppenwolf (who's a Jack Kirby minion of darksied)
here's a couple of his Jack Kirby iterations (being a little unfamiliar, I'm not sure it's the same guy, or if he plays counselor and general at different times)

- ... this is what we get in film ...

- ... for reference on how to do Kirby right ...
https://www.cinematographe.it/wp-co.....o-sakaar-3.jpg
- this really gets bad when I have to second guess if it's a parademon or cyborg, since they're both 99% silver
the CGI
- even ragnarok had moments of bad CG. it happens when the budget gets stretched ... but this film had very few points of GOOD CG. (not sure if it's art direction or what)
- and a lot of this is due to bad art design, but it's a bleed over
- half the action sequences are just vague green screen flailing against
the Superstasche
- so, backstory time in case you didn't hear ... Henry Cavill got called in for reshoots along with everyone else
- Unfortunately, he had already started filming Mission Impossible and was unable to shave his mustache due to contract
- LOOK AT ITS MAJESTY
https://cdn.flickeringmyth.com/wp-c.....Impossible.png
- so WB had to remove it digitally
- It looks bad
- in theatres (again, saw it with extended fam) the film opens with a celphone recording of Supes (flashback). My mom immediately leans over "Is that the same actor? I think it's the same actor? I can't tell. He looks different. Whaaaaaaaaaaa?"
- There's a solid reason: lips used by most people to lipread (even on a subconscious level). So if that's off it triggers uncanny valley.
Is there a silver lining?
- This is where I get into business, and this is the highly abridged version.
- Recipe for good business: master your craft, treat customers fairly, do marketing right, remember the customers are paying you (free exchange of currency thanks to capitalism)
- the recipe ISN'T figure out how to get more money. Do that and you'll end up like EA Games.
- Disney/Marvel is clearly on this path. The evidence is in their films which are genuinely getting better over time (Ragnarok is honestly one of the best films out there).
- the DCEU was born out of a need to make another superman film in order to keep the rights (ya have to do some spelunking to 2010-2013, but that's the truth), which led to the rushed Justice League film
- in other words = WB was focusing on retaining and earning money.
...
WHY I BRING THAT UP
...
Justice League had the weakest opening weekend out of any DCEU film. And given the negative word of mouth, it's not going to pull a wonder woman and stick around (especially with Ragnarok STILL in theatres and Star Wars just around the corner).
Even with extra investments and heavy changes, JL didn't match their goal of more money.
...
As such, I don't know how WB will respond to this.
Hopefully they'll keep on this new trajectory, 'cause it is better. But with money hungry execs you never know.
Refunds/Cancellations
Posted 8 years agoIn light of the delays experienced with completing the artwork - Refunds are being offered.
- Most items purchased will be available for refund (there are some terms/conditions, I'll outline them below)
- Do note that this is a VOLUNTARY refund. I won't be forcing anyone to cancel/refund their orders
This is being offered in an effort of fairness and good relations.
- I am making arrangements to where this will be a feasible option
- Please be polite, I'm doing my best to perform likewise
- If you do have questions, please ask them in private via notes so as to maintain civility
In an effort of transparency, here is a brief explanation as to why offering refunds is being considered
- In the past I've mentioned my health being an issue. While the exact cause is entirely unknown, the dominant symptoms are comparable to a strong case of fibromyalgia and general neuro-damage
-More specifically: chronic fatigue, frequent muscle failure (body simply refusing to do a task), severe joint pain (frequent use of a cane), a VERY sharp amplification of pain sensation from all sources, sensitivity to over stimulus (bright lights, loud noises, etc).
- All of this crippled my ability to be productive (even now I can't work through the afternoon due to bright sunlight through the window)
- It has taken me a long time to figure this much out, because before I was just "fml" ... buuuut ... there's a caveat
- You probably noticed recently a marked increase in production output. This is the result of my efforts to improve my health to more normal levels
- This has been through a near year-long effort with AMIT Muscle-chirpactic efforts, followed by a now 6 month effort with a personal trainer to get my body muscles working (due to general body atrophy from blocked neural passages)
- Obviously that costs a ton of money (and there has been a lot of other expenses as well). But without this, I wouldn't be able to get my art moving along
- So, that alone wouldn't be cause for refund, since now i'm more at "ok, let's do this"
- I now have imposed deadlines on my big projects
- By this I mean my co-writer is leaving state within a year. If I'm to finish the FEYA visual novel (which I haven't touched in months) I'll need to do it by then
- Currently I'm pulling 10-14 hour days, 7 days a week. This isn't healthy (especially for someone who isn't healthy to begin with).
- I need to finish that game so that I can live on a more sustainable lifestyle. If I miss that deadline it'll be exponentially difficult to transition away from working 14 hours a day
- So that's why I've made arrangements to be able to survive the next few months and still be able to afford dishing out refunds
In short, please consider the option to refund.
Refunding Schedule
- There will be a slight delay in getting the refund to you. As a rough estimate it will be delivered starting at a week from today (that being 11/23)
- Refunds will largely be delivered first requested basis
Items eligible for Refunds
- Adoptable full body rewards (those will be administered at a flat $30 per character)
- The adoptables themselves (including pending previews) are not eligible for refunding
- Commissions purchased will be refunded at the initial price paid
- Please have that info on hand
- If the paid item is not covered above, let me know and we can talk it out.
- REWARD drawings are not eligible for cash refunds. However, they may be transferred to credit on the following rates ...
- Bust sketch drawings may be substituted for the Adoption-only option of adoptables (this does include similar dopts from any set)
- Pin-up rewards may be substituted for Adoption + full body reward from any set (this does include similar dopts from any set)
Again - if you have any questions, please ask.

mystery payment
Posted 8 years agosomeone sent me $30 and didn't leave any note who it was from.
I'm gonna refund this unless whomever it was sends me a note saying "it was me!" (obvs include in the note the paypal name for verification)
...
So yeah, this is just general house keeping, and I'm sure other artists feel likewise: always include a note with your paypal monies saying "this is for that drawing of [person]"

change to the customer loyalty reward bit
Posted 8 years agoit's pretty straight forward
- rewards will be given out every $100 (reduced from $200)
- rewards will now be flat color bust sketches like this one ---> https://joncomms.deviantart.com/art.....illa-712721330
that's it.
nitty gritty for the transition period.
- people who have +$100 will be given the option to either continue working up to one more pin-up reward, or cash in on the bust
- I'll be reaching out to them directly
- everyone else may opt to build to one more pinup (the former $200 prize), but you have notify me.
- If I don't hear from you by monday morning, I'll consider that as you opting for the new program

Small PSA regarding payments - please double check
Posted 8 years agonothing too grand here.
If you've made payments recently (past couple months) please verify i marked it off as paid. --> http://fav.me/da5v3im
I've noticed a couple instances where I didn't mark it off as paid (I'm primarily blaming the hectic schedule and frequent away-times from computer where I forgot to update when I returned).
Anyhoo, just let me know if you paid.
- bonus points if you can give me a rough date-of-pay (or precise)
- alternative bonus points if you just forward me the note where I say "payment confirmed.
Sorry for the hassle. ^^;;;

Looking Ahead
Posted 8 years agoNo big changes coming up, but here's a general status update ...
in December I'll have the usual christmas expenditures to deal with, but also I'll be helping my parents go on a trip (by that I mean I'll be the driver and helping them load/unload/plan/etc). The trip itself is clearly nothing to complain about, but it does mean over a week without pay.
So ...
That means I have so massive financial shoring up to do.
ON THE PLUS SIDE
Nothing's planned for November to get in the way.
Which means this next month is going to see a very marked increase in production. YAY
Also, happy halloween! 8D

micro-update
Posted 8 years agosoooooooooo ...
i've been doing ok in general. yay.
Just wanted to touch base on a couple bits
- the pre-planned vacations/outings/etc hit me a lot harder and drained me more than expected
- plus all the fun of a failing body
What part of that meant is no print work this month. Which i'm not too proud about.
- I'll be sending out a note to my patrons shortly about some recompense on this point. I'm still trying to figure out for all the tiers (namely the $3 tier)
BUT
next month is largely open, so i'll be cranking overdrive with dopt sets, comms completed, and print work. YAY.
ALSO
someone reserved 2 dopts from the dopts-from-mars set, but I can't find your note. Please contact me if that was you.

Similar Adoptables Promotion Reminder
Posted 8 years agoJust a reminder regarding the Similar Adoptables Promotion Reminder ...
IT ENDS ON 10/20
which is just a couple days away.
and just to recap what similar adoptables are ...
In the last adoptables process update, I introduced the option of similar dopts
Similar dopts allow you to get a SIMILAR character to one that was nicked by someone else (this was to ease the pain of missing out as I removed the 1-only-during-first-week rule)
The pricing for this was +$5, meaning portrait/preview is $25 and portrait/preview & fullbody is $55 for similar
So, here's where the promotion comes into play
Normally similar dopts will only be available for currently open sets and recently sold out
to help during the transition phase, I'm placing ALL sets as eligible until the 20th (which was roughly 2 weeks since the announce)
If you're interested, just let me know
If you're interested but UNSURE which to get, also let me know. I'll try to work with you on it.
That's it. As a refresher, here's links to all the dopts ...
OPEN - https://jonfreeman.deviantart.com/g.....Adoptable-Sets
SOLD OUT - https://jonfreeman.deviantart.com/g...../SOLD-OUT-SETS
DE-LISTED - https://jonfreeman.deviantart.com/g.....doptables-sets
Thanks again, everyone, for all your support!

PSA: beware of adoptables moochers
Posted 8 years agoThe following situation has come to my attention.
An individual has been pestering my clients (aka - all of you wonderful fans).
The pattern exhibited basically goes like this
- individual will awkwardly ask "can I draw your adopted character"
- if pried for more information, it's revealed that isn't the actual intent. They really want to use the character for themselves in their own stories - more often than not changing everything about the lore/story.
- the apparent idea is to trap/harass the client into saying yes with a misleading fake question upfront
As such, if you get someone asking to draw fan art of your character, please be extra careful and ask what the real intent is and WHAT TYPE of fan art they want to draw.
This situation irks me.
Honestly, I feel mother-hen over y'all to an extent. So when I hear of harassment, pestering, etc to my clients I want to stamp it out instantly.
So again - be careful out there
And if any of you get pestered or harassed, ESPECIALLY in relation to commissions or adoptables, please let me know.

What did the hurricanes teach us?
Posted 8 years agoFOREWARNING
believe it or not, this isn't a political rant. This is anti-consumerism against news networks. (aka, think for yourself)
...
but a lot of people treat their readers of news on the same regard as religious pastors.
So I'm gonna get shit for this.
Whatever.
=============
Time to see if anyone learned a damned thing.
So, hurricanes happened. We had a couple big ones in quick succession.
What did we see?
PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER.
- That's what we ultimately saw in Texas and Florida. We saw people banding together in order to fix the problems at hand. Obviously there were outliers ... but just consider all those videos of everyone helping everyone regardless of what was going on.
What does that teach us?
THE NEWS AND CELEBRITIES IN THE MEDIA ARE FULL OF SHIT
Seriously, think about it.
Ever since Trump got elected everyone in the news have been screaming out at the top of their lungs "HE'S DIVIDING US!"
...
but we saw people helping each other regardless of skin pigmentation. That is contrary to "he's dividing us". If he really was dividing us (in a state that voted for him, it SHOULD have been divided) this unifying help wouldn't have happened.
The narrative is disassociated with reality.
We aren't divided.
We're just letting impassioned voices on the television box tell us we are.
CLARIFYING POINT
Whenever I mention the news ... gullible sheeple immediately say THOSE EVIL BASTARDS AT FOX NEWS.
... fox news has something like 16% market share during prime time (that was as of 2011, it's next to impossible to find data on this). They're honestly insignificant. You probably just got your knickers in a twist because you disagree with them ... or your college professor, or artist you follow, or friend, or favorite celebrity told a joke about Fox News and it made you laugh and you didn't look into it yourself.
... and i don't watch Fox News. I have a lot of other news sources and I just analyze and think things out myself like you should be doing.
So if you say I'm defending Fox News you're selectively illiterate and trying to pick a fight.
So if you point out fox news I'll likely laugh at you.
Any rate
so ...
Hurricanes happen. Everyone helps each other. We should have a higher view on all this ... right?
... right?
No, here we are a few weeks later and here's the news headlines.
OVERPAID PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES WHO DON'T EVEN CLEAN THEIR OWN HOUSE REFUSE TO STAND FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM
(a lot of pro athletes and celebrities hire nannies or have other people clean their stuff because it takes too much time)
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYS THIS IS STUPID ... WHICH IT SERIOUSLY IS
no, seriously. The NFL lost a huge chunk of their viewership last year.
In an exit survey of sorts, half of the lost viewers said it was over this national anthem horse shit and the other half said that it was because players beat their wives.
if the NFL took this viewership loss seriously they'd crack down on both wife beating and flag disrespect.
but they haven't and they won't. Just look at how many repeat wife beaters are still employed at the NFL
OVERPAID PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES WHO EARN MORE THAN YOUR BELOVED TEACHERS ARE OFFENDED THAT SOMEONE DISAGREES WITH THEM
THIS MEANS YOU SHOULD STAND WITH YOUR OVERPAID PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES! THEY'RE MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU!
THE NFL SUPPORTS THEIR OVERPAID AND UNGRATEFUL PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES, PAY THEM MONEY!
don't expect much in terms of Superbowl viewership this year
let's see ... what else ...
A LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW HOST CRIED DURING HIS MONOLOGUE! YOU SHOULD CRY TOO!
A GROUP OF DICKS PUNCHED ANOTHER GROUP OF DICKS BECAUSE THERE'S A STATUE!
A SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP IS ANGRY AT A NATIONAL CHAIN OF STORES BECAUSE THEY AREN'T BEING TREATED SPECIAL ENOUGH!
SEXISM IS BAD!
LOOK AT THESE SEXY RED CARPET PHOTOS! BUT HOW DARE THIS PERSON WEAR THAT!
ALL THESE CELEBRITIES ARE TALKING SUPER POLITICAL STUFFS THAT THEIR AGENT TOLD THEM TO!
ALL OF THESE HOLLYWOOD MOVIES ARE BOMBING IN THE BOX OFFICE! NOBODY CAN FIGURE OUT WHY!
WE'RE STILL TRYING TO CONVINCE THAT EVIL RUSSIAN HACKERS ARE REAL!
point is - the news media is more about their narrative than reality.
If they show people getting along, that means that there isn't a race problem. If there isn't a race problem that means all those specials about RACE IN AMERICA are wasted investments. And if that's the case, all those facebook posts that you shared might be wrong as well ... SHIT, CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN! STOP THINKING EVERYONE! LET'S GET ANGRY INSTEAD!
So yeah, think about all those awesome-humanity photos the next time you see the news media try to tell you that all whites hate all blacks or THE PATRIARCHY some ideologically shit like that.
BONUS ROUND
So why did the news media revert so fast?
I mean, normal people would change their mind when reality doesn't line up with theories. right?
it's called "escalating commitment." Common term in project management. It means "we can't stop now!"
M. Knight Shamallamadingdon has kept getting movie contracts after movie contracts after movie contracts. Same with Luc Besson, Bowle, and a ton of other shit directors whose movies repeatedly bomb.
Why?
Reboots are everywhere. Hollywood seems to hold the mantra of "never let a franchise die." Same goes with comeback tours.
Why?
It's easier to throw more money at a sinking ship and say "this time for sure!" than seek out new talent. Seeking new talent is a risk, whereas throwing more money at shitty directors is going to get you the same result it did last time ... which is predictable. It's easier to keep promoting actors who haven't had a real hit in years than train the audience to look for new talent and experiment.
...
the same mentality gets applied to news casts and politics for this crowd. ('cause most news stations are owned by entertainment networks like Time Warner and such)
It's easier to keep on the "evil russian hackers" for months on end rather than saying "whups, maybe that wasn't right" (even when the whole thing was a bunk buzzfeed report without sources to begin with that shouldn't have been aired due to newscasters honor code).
If someone says a flat out lie in a police shooting investigation, it's a lot easier to double down on the lie than it is to change your position. (even after the verdict is reached and the prove in court that it was a lie)
And it's a hell of a lot easier to blame everything on discrimination rather than trying to explain multifaceted complicated issues to a limited attention span audience that that is reading news stories on their phones while taking a shit on the toilet.
So yeah. There's all that.
SECOND BONUS ROUND
I'm going to outline this ahead of time because it happens every damned time.
- I'll offend someone with this post, but they won't say anything
- alternatively they'll say something and I'll clarify and point out the flaws in their argument
- said person will then remain quiet and read my journals for about a week or two
- then they'll pounce on me at random in a burst of accusations saying YOU'RE A BIGOT
- then I'll call them out that it was an unfounded accusation. they will insist, and i will block them
- then another friend of that person will come to me and say OH HE DIDN'T MEAN THAT! and then I'll outline the situation and they'll go "... oh ... well he says he's sorry."
So ...
if you find yourself offended by this journal ... save me the time and unwatch right now. Because this cycle happens every damned time and it's just embarrassing how predictable it is.
believe it or not, this isn't a political rant. This is anti-consumerism against news networks. (aka, think for yourself)
...
but a lot of people treat their readers of news on the same regard as religious pastors.

Because this cycle happens every damned time and it's just embarrassing how predictable it is.

addressing the adoptable elephant in the room
Posted 8 years agoshort sum
- my life's going a bit downhill. But that's not important because i have commitments to fulfill
- financial stresses are kinda leaving me no choice but to do an adoptable set a day
- but there's that damned to-do list
I'm currently reviewing my day to see where i can make things go faster ... so you'll be seeing more changed upcoming
FOR NOW
no streams
- setting up and chatting midstream slows me down and i don't really have anyone to act as MC (mostly 'cause i don't have a fixed schedule)
- so, no streams for now until i get this down
Loyalty rewards ...
- i'm going to be reviewing these.
- a change may be inbound with them (for future rewards and accumulations)
Social recluse
- will probably hermit a bit moving forward for the time being
got comicon this weekend, plus a few other craps that are gonna pull me away from computer periodically over the next few months
good times
anyhoo, blah blah blah

Hatchable set on the way, new rules tho
Posted 8 years agoso ... I'm gonna do a new Hatchables set later today. Slight caveat, though. And here's some context for it ...
I TACKLE HATCHALBES DIFFERENTLY
With how I crank out these adoptables, if I did the normal way (show an egg, you adopt, then there's the hatchable) it's really just adding another step to the process.
As such: I allow for some client input on the design ... in a very limited way so that they still get the hatchable surprise effect. (otherwise it'd just be a custom dopt, and I already offer those)
- I mean, part of the appeal of hatchables is that surprise Gatcha sensation of putting a coin into the machine and opening the plastic bauble to see what figurine you got.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT DOING IT THIS WAY
I get pleasantly surprised by the input received. Done right, it gives me a challenge and still allows me to get some creative-excercise in designing it
WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT HATCHABLES
People don't read the instructions.
Seriously
Every set there's at least 1 person who doesn't read the instructions. As in they'll write in and say "I want this" and then I have to say "... and? ... did you read the instructions? ... did you know that you have to provide input?"
Then, also, after reading directions they don't FOLLOW directions. The most common example: I say "give me 3 adjectives" and they give me 3 paragraphs explaining what would otherwise be the requisite information for a custom adoptable ... which a hatchable isn't.
So it's honestly frustrating for me to deal with that, which is why it's been a few months since my last hatchable batch.
...
But, I figured out a new rule. And I will do everything that I can to communicate this, and hopefully it will minimize the number of times I have to put it into effect.
YOU HAVE ONE CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR REQUEST CORRECTLY
That's it.
- So, if the input request was "supply 3 adjectives" and you submit your request saying "Well, here's the adjectives... but what I really mean is [short novel's worth of clarification]"
- YOU WILL NOT GET THE HATCHABLE (and don't worry, I won't ask for payment until I confirm you did it right. If you happened to pay first, which i advise against, I'll refund you.)
And to make it clear?
Failure to comply will result in missing out on getting any hatchable from the entire set. So if you ask for top left and totally ignore the rules you won't get top left and you won't get to bid on any other one.
SORRY FOR BEING A GRUMP ON THIS
The frustration that ensues from people who simply don't follow the directions (in ways that it's clearly not an error on my part) has honestly dissuaded me from doing these hatchables.
Hatchables are fun, but dealing with people who don't follow directions kill the joy out of it.
SO YEAH, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED
...
BUT DO HAVE FUN AND ENJOY THE HATCHABLES~!

Posted 8 years agothis is just a simple question I should have asked the first time.
What type of male characters are you in the market to adopt?
I just ask this because i haven't really been able to design any that sold. So part of me is thinking I'm just missing the mark. Hence: me asking my audience what y'all are interested in.
And mind you, by this I mean all aspects. So ... setting, build, attitude, fashion sense, etc.
Any input you could toss my way would be appreciated.
Cheers!

suggesting dopt themes
Posted 8 years agoSo ... I may's well just toss this out there ...
*** yes, i do welcome suggestions on adoptables themes
*** no, i don't tackle every one of them
While the latter is mostly due to time constraints, there are some other reasons where I simply won't go after a suggestion. And, mind you, I haven't had any TERRIBLE suggestions that weren't flat out jokes (I've even tackled some of those as a challenge). The reason I won't go after them is usually due to business reasons.
so...
If you want to have fun and contribute some suggestions? here's a little behind-the-curtains things that'll make me consider them more ...
THINGS THAT ARE ON THE GOOD LIST
* if you come up with a suggestion that i haven't touched at all, moreso hadn't even considered. The clown dopts was one such dare.
* It makes me laugh (look through my happenstance stuff and read the stories to get a sense of my humor)
* Sets that challenge me on a STORY-TELLING level. ... note: boobs are not story telling, nor is sexy. On the contrary: combining caring motherly tropes with yandere is a challenge.
* Suggesting a literature/media genre I haven't touched yet. That's a worthy challenge I'll very likely accept.
* Likewise, just other things I haven't done yet. I know I haven't done a full set of flight attendants, for example.
THINGS THAT ARE ON THE not as good LIST
* "Do that set you just ran, but with this!" ... this ties into repeat themes. I don't like to launch a set with a theme VERY similar to a prior one, unless the prior one near-sold out. And that's simply due to demand. If set A didn't sell at all, launching set A' will have very similar results. And, unfortunately I have to let finances dictate this venture to an extent. I mean, you can suggest variations on a set ... but odds of me running with it are super slim due to the above reasons.
* Mechs. Unfortunately, mechs are really complicated to draw, more time = more money. :c I'd have to charge more for that set, and usually it doesn't work out that well when i raise the price. I've been asked this a few times, so I do apologize.
* Stuff that's on my no-go list (like porn or whatever). should go without saying, but i feel like i should say it anyway
* "Make Halo Spartans!" ... or some other fandom. Personal moral compass, that's a bit too close to copyright infringement for me to feel comfortable, and there isn't a social norm precedence like there is in fan made print works.
- There is ONE exception I can think of, which is Ponys ... but that's, again, due to precedent and so on and so forth. (as an aside, i'm a little unsure about doing a pony set. it's been weighed off an on, tho).
- corollary exception to this is making a set off a genre that something inspired or revitalized. Star Wars basically created Science Fantasy and a few other stories have launched off this. That Space Saga set was me riffing off those subsequent sub-genre tropes that Star Wars inspired.
Anyhoo, that's a bit into my thought process. If you want to toss some suggestions out, feel free.

Posted 8 years agoSo, I got asked this question over on Tumblr, I figure it's worth it to post the answer here as well.
"What's the point of "adopting" OCs?"
This a fair question so I’ll answer publicly. It’s worth addressing because Adoptables is an odd niche market that I stumbled on, but surprisingly it’s where 90% of my income is generated now. The reasons can vary from client to client.
The answer is simply: it’s why you to to a fancy restaurant to get a delicious sammich when you could just make it yourself.
Specific reasons vary from client to client, that I’ve seen, but here’s the two most common themes.
- They simply don’t have the experience or know-how to make a solid character themselves. Frequently this is due to them NOT being an artist or writer (for example, a graveyard shift machinist who enjoys stories but hasn’t written any). And I’ve seen some of my clients really progress and start crafting good stories for their adopted characters. Additionally, there’s a certain satisfaction of getting comms of your own character (even if adopted).
- The other reason is that they see a character that JUST FITS what they’re doing. A specific example was that someone was about 80% there on crafting a cult leader for their story (they knew all the plot requirements and general aesthetic), then one of my adoptables actually fit their bill exactly.
So yeah, there is an acknowledgement that a certain satisfaction can be found by making your own characters. But sometimes adopting one fits the bill.
And to answer the potential immediate follow up question that others of you may have: "but what's the point?"
This is the exact same question. Reread the answer and think from the perspective of someone who isn't you.

For everyone with outstanding adoption rewards ...
Posted 8 years agoDecided I'd toss out this option for ya ...
If you have multiple adoption reward drawings in the queu - you have the option of combining them into single pictures.
WHY?
it'll make it more interesting and let you show these characters interacting with eachother on the first go. =)
http://fav.me/da5v3im
Just take a look through here, make note of the adopts you have outstanding. Then send me a note/tell/IM/whatever if you want to combine the pics.
Cheers!

COMMS CLOSED, PATREON REOPENED
Posted 8 years agoFOR PETE'S SAKE PLEASE READ THIS!
I'm not going to run around double checking with everyone "hey did you read this?" and I'll be dissappointed if you missed the announcement.

and if you know people who aren't too swift on reading, please TELL THEM TO READ.

PATREON HAS NOW BEEN RE-OPENED
COMMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED
ALL PRE-EXISTING TIERS IN PATREON HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND NEW ONES HAVE BEEN SET-UP IN THEIR PLACE.
how this all breaks down ...
- Patreon is going to resume on the monthly
- if you want a commission? you'll have to get one via Patreon Tiers. And that's 1 per month (outside of specials i might run)
- adoptables will continue to go strong! All patrons (even $1) will get in on the 1st dibs deal. (this is going to resume going into effect as of 8/22)
- I removed all patron tiers. I'm HOPING this forced patreon.com to send a notification to everyone stating "hey, your tier's gone. would you like to review this?)
- Patron discounts are gone, but patron priority is still a thing. (the logistics of remembering who qualified for patron discounts was a bit on the inane side, especially since most people forgot)
- Now ... I KNOW that someone out there is going to totally miss this announcement. As a one time courtesy, anyone who gets charged this month without realizing it, then contacts me any time during september I'll manually reverse the charge myself (it's a nasty complicated thing). I will be expecting you do fix it, though (hence one time courtesy). Also, I'm giving 10 days and multiple notifications. So that SHOULD be enough time.
- More than anything, this should give me a more sustainable patreon/commission/income plan and help me get crackin' on my personal projects.
Thanks again for all your support!
