Debating not attending BLFC
General | Posted 8 years agoNot sure if I will be going at this point. That room debacle looks and smells fishy, but doesn't look as if con staff will look into it. "Get a room outside con block" seems to be their answer. The con block was rather high by itself, so pay for even higher rates? Nope.
At this point the only options are other hotels some distance away. Kinda puts a dent on some planned activities, including fursuiting, and wanting to retreat to one's room to rest or... well, you know what I really would like to happen. But no one may want to go to one's room if it is miles away. Even though I plan to drive, and thus would have my car. :/
No Internet at home :/
General | Posted 8 years agoI've been without service for a week already because of stupid shit with Centurylink promising a service that cannot be had at my home, and then trying to go back to the old provider (who uses Centurylink's service). I have had to depend on my cell phone for access, but I'm trying to save data so that it doesn't slow down (not sure how slow it will get from the current 4G LTE). Now I got told I have to wait until Monday to see if something gets resolved.
Fucking pain in the tail, and not in a good way. Comcast is starting to look good after this shit.
Looking for raptor resin mask
General | Posted 8 years agoSpecifically, something like this -- http://www.furaffinity.net/view/17913083/
I've seen a few different costumes based on that raptor head, so I went on a search for the maker of that blank. I managed to trace it back to her Deviantart site. Sadly, she doesn't seem to be selling them beyond the few that were made originally, which is a major bummer. I've been thinking of ideas for some possible Darkthunder costume, with a mix of cloth and some body painting.
If you know where I could find a similar design (or knows that builder), could you please let me know?
Thanks.
Went for a visit, stayed for a hurricane... :/
General | Posted 8 years agoWell, it was a forced stay and nothing that was planned. Anyhoo...
Back in April I bought a flight on United to fly to Aguadilla (Puerto Rico) for a week (Sept. 12 to 20) so I could visit my family still residing on the west coast of the island (last month was the 20th anniversary of my move to the States). Back then, I thought nothing of it. I had made other trips around that time of the year, and all turned uneventful.
A week before the trip, most of the island was spared a hit from hurricane Irma; areas to the east and the two small island municipalities to the east were affected, however. At the time I considered rescheduling my trip, but everything seemed heading to normal, so I kept my plans. The day of my trip, I left my car parked at my workplace (free parking beats paying for airport parking or the transit system's "park and ride") and took the light rail to the airport. On hindsight, this turned to be ideal; keep reading.) I was somewhat restless during the ride to the airport and even during the trip, with a feeling that something was not going to be good. I had a layover in Newark, then continued to Aguadilla.
Two days after my arrival, the local newscasts began talking about the weather agencies keeping watch over a low pressure system that was forming... which intensified very quickly into hurricane Maria. As time passed, I began to worry; all forecast models had it heading straight towards the island. My flight out was scheduled to leave hours before it was predicted to arrive. My brother's home is made completely out of concrete, miles away from the beach and on high ground, so I knew he would have no problems staying inside during the hurricane. I was feeling bad about leaving him and my mother behind to face the certain aftermath that would follow.
I was getting ready to head much earlier to the airport when the email came in -- my flight was being cancelled after all airports were closed the day before. I had no choice but to stay and experience the hurricane with my brother and mother. At the time I still had electric power and Internet, so I went to the United website to reschedule for the Friday after, but that one was quickly cancelled as well. So I rescheduled again for the following Monday, Sept. 25th.
Maria came through. Other than trees stripped of all their leaves and some broken branches, the neighborhood came out basically unscathed. Electric power was out (and still is at the time I am writing this), but we still had running water. That too, however, went out two days later, and remained out for two days. It would come back, but at times it would be reduced to a trickle coming out of the faucets. With the loss of electrical power, there was no cell phone service, much less any type of Internet. The day after the hurricane, we tried going to my mother's home (she stayed with my brother and me during my visit), going around flooded roads and fallen trees. Eventually we were forced to turn back after a huge river made the road impassable to anyone not driving some huge pickup truck.
During the next days, stores and gas stations started opening, but very few and far between. Lines formed for everything -- supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, gas stations... you name it. The government mandated a curfew from 9pm to 5am every night, which probably is still going on. Every night, things got really dark at our home, as my brother, unlike a few of his neighbors, did not have a power plant in his home. A hot meal became a rare event, since his stove is electric. Cold showers were the norm now, but given the warm, humid weather, they were more of a relief than a nuisance. But we were among the lucky ones. Many of you have surely seen images of what happened. My old hometown was mostly intact, but others in the center of the island were destroyed. People lost everything they had; others lost their lives as well.
On the 25th, roads were clear enough that we headed to the airport. Upon arrival, we found it closed. A few people over there asked a security guard if he knew anything, but he said it would remain closed "Until further notice", and that only a very small number of flights were living from the bigger airport in the capital, San Juan. We drove back home.
Days continued to pass. More gas stations opened, but the lines were still huge. Some people made long lines even if the station was closed, perhaps hoping that a fuel truck would arrive that day. There were still lines for buying whatever meager groceries one could find at the supermarket. Some fast food places opened; Subway and Burger King were used when possible, since gas and cash had to be used sparingly as stores could not take any form of cards due to no access to the credit systems. Cell phone service was restored in my town, but my phone would not work (you failed there, T-Mobile!). I used my mom's phone to call United to have them reschedule my flight out. As it has becoming the norm with many companies, my call went to some call center in the Philippines (I recognized the accent from my own experiences with my job), My flight out was rescheduled for October 3rd, one week from when I called.
Days passed. On October 2nd, I called United's automated system to check on my flight's status. It was cancelled. Again. I tried asking an uncle for help, to see if he had any sort of Internet access at his business so I could look at alternatives. Not going to go into details on this, but I got almost no help at all. Frustrated, I called United again on the phone. Here I found something -- if you have to use their automated system, if it ever asks for "Help with something else", use it! I got routed to someone in the States who knew how to work things out; overseas reps are trained to follow scripts to the letter and won't deviate from them (again, I know this from my own job), This service rep told me that the airport in Aguadilla was closed and used only for relief and logistic operations, so he changed my reservation to fly out of San Juan, also on October 3rd. Great!
The morning of the 3rd, I call United's system. It says my reservation is for the 4th. Okay, fine. I've waited two weeks to leave by then, so I can wait one more day. Again I used the "help with something else" option, and asked if I really had a confirmed seat, as I was not willing to have my brother drive 100 miles to San Juan only for me to find out I had a standby flight. United assured me it was a confirmed seat. But we had the misfortune that we lost running water, again. And it was still out on the morning of the 4th, so I was unable to take a shower before heading over to the airport. >.<
So on October 4th, we make the drive. I arrived at the airport, and there I find out that my 1:45pm flight was indeed leaving that day... except that it was delayed and leaving at 6:30pm. Which was later than the connecting flight was to leave. That was later pushed to 7:05pm, but at least it was not cancelled. I bid farewell to my mother and brother, and prepared myself to spend hours near the gate.
During the wait, I spent some time talking with other people who also had waited for days for a flight out. One lady was from Colombia, and she was a riot. And very direct with her words. At one point our conversation was about a humanitarian flight from United that would be taking people out. We recalled that incident in a United flight were that doctor was beaten and dragged out of a flight. She said that some companies,, "The are like cats. They take a shit on the sand and then they try to cover it up." XD I also managed to nab the only power outlet that seemed to exist in that whole concourse. Between my and some other passenger's surge protectors, we managed to share it with a few other passengers to charge their phones.
Eventually the time came for me to fly out. On a Boeing 767, even. Every flight I had taken in and out of Puerto Rico had been in some variant of a 737. But this time it appeared United wanted to fly as many people out as possible. The plane's entertainment system had "Guardians of the Galaxy" available. I had not seen the movie yet, so I passed some of the time watching it. It also had the sequel, but there was not enough time to see it before the plane landed in Newark. We arrived shortly before 11pm, and my next flight was at 8am the next day. I was told to ask for a hotel voucher, but given the long and very slow line at customer service, I probably would had made it to the hotel around 2am. Not enough time to sleep, then head back to the airport. I spent the whole night in the concourse at Newark, unable to sleep but with my laptop to keep me company. At least T-Mobile worked there, since I had to tether my phone to my laptop so I could get online. No frigging way I was gonna pay $15 for the airport's Internet connection. :P
8am arrived, and so I was flying back to Denver. After another 1+ hour in the light rail towards my workplace, I picked up my car and headed home, where a warm shower and food awaited. Which brings me back to how fortunate it was that I parked at my workplace. Had I left my car at the airport, the parking fee would had been over $200. And since park and rides want me to prepay for the time I will be out, had I paid for the week I was planning to be away, my car would have likely been towed after the time expired.
I arrived at Denver on a Thursday, and went to work the next day. At my workplace, several people welcomed me back. They were aware of my problems (I kept my boss on the loop whenever I could call or text her). And there, I was surprised to know many in my department had chipped in to help me and my family with money. A bit over $500, in fact. This was totally unexpected and quite emotional. I managed to call my brother today and told him to expect it via Western Union transfer.
So that is my story, condensed for time (and not corrected for spellings, grammar, nor for small errors in writing. Something bad happened, yes. But again, I was lucky to come out of it somewhat inconvenienced, but unscathed. I'm sure there are many people that wish my experience had been theirs.

Fucking shit
General | Posted 8 years agoNot a good thing to find a letter in the mail from some collection business wanting $150.
Some time ago, I sold an old Cavalier after I got a better car, who in turn sold it to another one. Stupidly, I gave the person the title without going to the DMV to have it transferred. so this person parked illegaly somewhere in Denver, and because the car was still in my name, now I am getting a letter for an overdue parking ticket that was supposedly not paid. I did pay the stupid thing and waited to be reimbursed, but it never happened. And now I get a letter saying it was never paid.
Unfortunately, the account I used for paying was was closed years ago, so I have no records of it. And so did I lost contact with the person that ended up with the car; I only know it was someone here on FA. It would be nice if they came forward and took care of this crap, but I don't expect them to. Sad to say, many furries are flaky and irresponsible.
Fucking pissed right now.
Eclipse adventure
General | Posted 8 years agoI don't know how many journals you may have read by now, or read other stuff online. Many are probably tired of reading about it. If so, feel free to skip this.
I had known about this event for at least three years if not more. Back then, I read that it was going to cross Wyoming, which is north of Colorado where I live (for those not familiar with US states). Before this, the only solar eclipse I had seen was back in 1970 when I was a hatchling, and it was just a partial. My original plan was to drive anywhere in Wyoming where I could see totality. Back then I had planned to invite two other people for the ride, but found myself doing the trek alone after one of them decided I was no longer worth being his friend (and the other being his partner).
So I left Denver right around midnight on Monday and drove four hours to Casper, Wyoming. There is a little dinosaur museum that I wanted to see, which is why I drove further than some other location that was closer. But the museum decided to remain closed for the morning and not open until 1pm. I thought that perhaps it was foolish of me to leave so early, but later on I read about other people from Denver who could not even get close to the Wyoming border because of traffic. Made it to a Walmart's parking lot around 4am, and waited there for hours for the main event. My cellphone's data was out most of the time, so I just had the radio and my tablet to pass the time.
As the moment drew closer, the air got much colder. The day began turning to darkness, but it was never quite like nighttime where I was, and never got totally dark. And at 11:42, it happened. The sight... good Maia, it was awesome. Photos just cannot show how great it is seeing totality in person. Partial eclipses also cannot match the view of seeing the sun completely gone.
Two minutes later, it was over. There was the other hour of the moon moving away, but I was tired at that point from having slept only 2 - 3 hours the night before (I tried sleeping in my car but could not). Neither did I go to the museum, wanting to go home and hopefully beat traffic.
Me and thousands other drivers failed. I swear that half of Colorado must have gone to Wyoming. It took me about 12 hours to finally make it to the state border (some of it stopped at a rest stop weighing my options), and another two hours to get home after that. But that is probably a tale for another day.
And if anyone finds themselves with a chance to see another eclipse, please take it. Share the journey with others, as I wanted to do. Believe me, it really will be worth it in the end.
Adieu, color.
General | Posted 8 years agoThose on Twitter saw me mention it before. If you missed, it means I have decided that any future images will be done only as pencils. Any color images will just be ref pics, where flat colors are all one really needs.
Coloring has become quite a pain in the tail. Mainly because my coloring has barely progressed in more than 20 years, and I am really tired of my process. I know it is just a matter of program settings (whether Photoshop, Painter, Clip Studio, et al). But I've never been smart enough to figure out many things on my own without instructions. I've tried other processes without success, and almost all tutorials and publications I've seen never go into details with regards to layer settings and/or brushes and brush settings. As if one could just "get it" by osmosis or ESP just from looking at a few steps and pics. :P
Pay to learn is another option. At $50+/hour, however, it is out of my budget. That is not to say I would like people to teach for minimum wage. Artists deserve much better compensation than that. It just means I have to look elsewhere. And I don't really know anyone personally to feel comfortable to ask for pointers (I would likely need a lot of them, and people certainly can use their time for other things).
I've seen a few people here do good stuff just in pencils, so I'll see about doing the same. that's how I used to draw before computers came into the picture (no pun intended).
PS. If anyone decides to -Watch cuz there may never be any more color unfings, feel free to click on the link at the top.
I need a change of diet. Suggestions?
General | Posted 9 years agoLike, seriously.
My choices for food have never been the best, and I think it is starting to affect me, both physically and mentally. But I have always been at a loss on what to eat. Most healthy fare I've tried is either bland, or expensive. Sometimes both.
So I would like suggestions for books or websites that provide good recipes that don't break the bank.
EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions so far. If anyone has others, please keep them coming.

Speaking of Krogans, ME2 is free for a limited time
General | Posted 9 years agoIf you don't have the game, grab it soon -- https://www.origin.com/usa/en-us/st.....andard-edition
I've never played any of the trilogy, so it is downloading as I type this. Only the regular edition, but hey... can't argue with free. (No idea what one gets with DLCs. More quests?)

Need Solar eclipse glasses!
General | Posted 9 years agoFor those who may not be aware, next year on August 21 there will be a total solar eclipse across parts of the USA. It won't happen in Colorado, but I plan to drive to Wyoming to see it. This is something I definitely do NOT want to miss. But protective eye gear must be worn, and I don't know where to get a good, reputable set. The ones I see on Amazon look rather fishy to me (like, flimsy cardboard and plastic).
Anyone in the know who can recommend a good brand? Preferably something that can be worn while wearing regular prescription glasses.
Dang...
General | Posted 9 years agoI mean... I know I have some fans, but I really did not imagine that the whole auction would be over in less than 10 minutes. That is the kind of reaction that I imagine happens with much better artists in high demand.
This Carnotaur appreciates it very, very much. *bows*
YCH tomorrow
General | Posted 9 years agoI'll open the auction tomorrow after I get back from work (after 5PM MST). Until then, have a peek of the 4 selections - https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CzDFG6I.....umDc.jpg:large .
And yes, you can use your own chars. I drew four scalies just as an example. But those designs can be used if someone likes them enough.
Just a note...
General | Posted 9 years agoLike I said in my latest submission, I do not plan on offering just YCHs and/or auctions in the future. I will eventually take commissions again, once I can get myself back to the stage when I can feel confident on my drawings enough to draw what may be requested other than what my mind wants to draw. I'm also looking into ditching Photoshop for most of the work and switch to Clip Paint Studio, since it seems more geared to actual drawing.
Another thing, whenever I open for commissions, I have a few ideas in mind about how to give everyone a more fair chance at getting a spot rather than whoever had the most money or just happened to be lucky enough to be on FA when the spots may open. I don't want to make it by random number -- maybe I am just too paranoid and a pessimist, but I feel like it would be very easy to fake the results. ("Number 7!? Ugh, that belongs to that guy with the fox, and I don't want to draw foxes! Yeah, let me keep refreshing the page until number 12 shows up, since that guy has a lion.")
Stay tuned. Same Carno channel (no time since I am not sure when).
Carno wants game scores! Link 'em to me!
General | Posted 9 years agoI hear online the occasional track for some AA or AAA games which always leaves me wanting to hear more of such dynamic, symphonic music that rival anything one hears in movies.
So which ones has anyone found out to be good? I would love to hear anything with a sci-fi/fantasy theme. Anything in places like YouTube is fine; I can always look for and buy any downloadable versions of those I may like the most.
Changes to "Archosaur Patrol" universe
General | Posted 9 years agoFollowers of my Twitter feed* are probably aware of my desires to change a few things in my Archosaur Patrol universe. These are things that made sense to me when I originally wrote them, but not so anymore. Two things are bugging me the most --
* Starhunter (aka Rapthor) is Darkthunder's older brother. The original idea was for him to have left his pack and joined the Patrol, and that Darkthunder followed him a year or two after that. But terrorclaw packs place great importance in the eldest offspring of a mated couple to continue their lineage. So if Starhunter is the oldest offspring, why would the pack just allow him to leave? And if Starhunter had left first, then why would the pack allow Darkthunder to go after him, leaving no young members of his family in the pack?
* The original story had Starhunter join the Patrol, but was dishonorably discharged from it after he mauled and almost killed another recruit during an incident, when others bullied him for his primitive roots, which caused him to lapse into a primal trance. So after getting discharged, why would the Patrol release him on the streets (so to speak) like any archosaur, rather than return him to his homeworld, which is where all terrorclaws are expected to live? Even if he had escaped whatever prison the Patrol may have been holding him, I would imagine a terrorclaw would be easy to spot, and someone would be more than eager to turn him in for a reward.
So I thought about this for a while, and made a few changes:
In the revised storyline, Darkthunder was actually the one who left after he expressed a desire to see the stars with the archosaurs. The pack elders thought that his feathers and dark skin (which is actually a product of a mutation; Darkthunder is the first of his kind to make the change into a more bird-like appearance) was something they did not want in their pack. If he were to leave the pack, then he would not pass on these traits. It would not be after the death of his parents and the abscence of his brother, that his pack would change their mind and asked him to return. When they see how strong and muscular he has become, the elders think his genes must be equally strong.
* Starhunter did indeed leave the pack for the stars as well, but not by his own choice. There are corrupt soldiers in the Patrol that ocasionally capture civilians and sell them as slaves to the mammals that are trying constantly to undermine the Archosaur Alliance, and I see them as somehow taking Starhunter after he expressed interest on seeing his brother. So Starhunter is captured, but manages to escape while in archosaur territory. He does not know where he is, and must find a way to survive. Of course, that leaves me trying to figure out how he knew the archosaur language, but he could have been one of the few in the pack that are appointed to know it, as shown in my story "Unresolved Paths". In any case, he would be very wary of other archosaurs, and could resign himself to trying to find a way to survive away from his pack.
There is another change I've mentioned in Twitter, and that is about Vak'zhoria. After I wrote "A Path of Thunder", I decided to change her from a styracosaurus to a carnotaurus (her sex did not change, she's still female). In the chapter I posted here where Softwind is captured and raped, there is a mention of a female carnotaur commander. Well, what if said commander was actually Vak'zhoria? She would be completely unaware of what some in her crew have been doing, and these same traitorous elements could have been the ones behind Starhunter's disappearance. While Vak'zhoria was not involved nor had knowledge of what some of her crew were doing, she was sexually involved with a male carnotaur who was part of the corrupt soldiers. She was initially accused of being behind the scheme. But while she was found to be innocent of the charges, her reputation suffered -- the Patrol still placed some blame on her for failing to monitor what is going on her ship. So she resigned voluntarily her ship and rank and accepted an assignment in the Dak-Tarrakhan, who was under Prion's command at the time. So she would naturally be quite surprised (and resentful) when she learns that a terrorclaw will take command of the ship after Prion's death. I'm also thinking that maybe she should be the one that becomes First Officer of the Tarrakhan after Arokh. She may have taken strong actions to redeem herself, maybe even helped Grell save Darkthunder from his captors. Since Grell is happy being the Navigator, she could become First Officer after Darkthunder reports her actions to the Patrol.
These and other changes also mean some characters may get removed from this story. The most obvious one woud be Nyhhk (the bounty huntress). She'll still be around, just not in the role I had originally planned.
Anyhoo... that was a lot. Comments are always welcome!

Dino commercial!
General | Posted 9 years agoThis is a bit sad and cute.
https://youtu.be/I2j2-DqcPfMThey should make another with a Carnotaur. We need such cars even more so!
What happened to the old FA journals?
General | Posted 9 years agoOldest one I have is from June 2015. Did anything older that this disappear as a result of the latest outage? Or did some admin decided to kill the rest?
Lost some nice stuff and comments in there. :/
EDIT: Never mind, I see now that everything is still there. My mistake. ^^;
A song for today
General | Posted 9 years agoI still cannot sing this without getting a lump in my throat.
https://youtu.be/c9PwWkV4HQ4And yes, I am aware what those South Park people said about it. But IMO, they can stick their worthless show up their butts. They demonstrated what sore losers they are when Phil Collins won the Oscar over their "Blame Canada" song.
Got my account back. And possible streaming.
General | Posted 9 years agoI was settling on my desk at work before my shift when the email came to get my FA account restored. So I is a happy Carnotaur now.
Also, I'm thinking of resuming streaming my coloring. It would be more for those who may want to see me work on a picture. Unlike what some people may think, I am not an art god; I think my skills are lacking in many areas. And I was thinking about experimenting with Photoshop to see what else I could discover on my own. Though if anyone with knowledge would like to drop by for a bit and give pointers, I would be quite thankful for them.
I may keep some music playing in the background. That may distract some people into making fun of my tastes on music and not so much on my accent or how much of a newbie I still am with Photoshop. :)
Adventure game with dinosaurs!
General | Posted 9 years ago
twarda has a cool, point-and-click adventure game with dinosaurs waiting to be greenlighted on Steam.https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfi...../?id=672319988
I know this type of game may not appeal to most of you out there (the FPS/MOBA/MMO crowd). It reminds me of some games of the DOS/Windows 95 era. But that is what makes it charming; it's a fresh break from those same old, done to death genres. And as many of you know, you can almost never go wrong with dinosaurs. :)
So please help a fellow dino lover reach her goal.
Non-con in stories
General | Posted 9 years agoI think I may have brought this before, but I am too lazy ATM to look.
I've been thinking again about my novel, and wanting to go back to writing it.* I want to write a story that pulls no punches, and that it may tug at some people's feelings. Characters will die, either by enemies or at the hand of traitors. Others may go MIA. Some may wish they were dead already, or die sooner.
People seem to accept death, violent or not, but when it comes to non-con sex, people get scared and turned off. I know it can be touchy for some, even more so if they have gone through it in real life. But the intention is not for arousal. The world of the archosaurs is sometimes violent, and to pretend that archosaurs are very civilized and that such things would never happen is only fooling oneself. Sort of like when I see some non-con pics in here and the uploader states that the victim is "secretly enjoying it". Makes me wanna smack someone when I see that. :P
I put a poll in my Twitter page, for those with it. They don't last long, 20 hours left at the time I'm writing this. https://twitter.com/bakensobek
Mind you, I don't plan to censor anything (but still would like to gauge people's opinion). It is my story, and it will be written as I want it to be. I don't want to pull any punches. If readers feel a knot on their throat or a visceral hit to their guts, then that was the intention. (The late James Horner once said that ge tried to tug at viewers' strings with his music when possible, and that if it made them feel bad, then he feels he did his job.) The first scene would be Softwind's capture, and that does not go nice for her. (BTW, pterosaurs will be changed in this universe. They will be really primitive, more so than the terrorclaws, and their speech will reflect this.) But I still think if one could somehow mark those passages so people can avoid them if they wish.
Suggestions are welcome.
* - I wish I didn't have so many frigging ideas and no time to work on them all? Anyone wants to adopt a Carnotaur so he doesn't have to work for a living? :P )
I has a Telegram
General | Posted 9 years agoCarnotaurus -- No surprises there. Other than me amazed the name was still available.
That said, it is running in my desktop and phone, but I may not be able to answer quickly. Or not at all, when I am at work.
And don't get offended if I don't recognize you. I has tiny dinosaur brain, after all.
I wonder if there are carnotaur stickers. May have to make some chibis.
Planned obsolescense? Ain't having it this time!
General | Posted 9 years agoThe time came for me to replace my old desktop with something newer, faster, and better (hello, tax refund). I'm hardly a gamer, but it was getting to the point where the games I have would play better with a boost, and for me to be ready for a few games yet to come -- "Saurian" being one.
But new technology means leaving behind a few things, whether we like it or not. Installing Windows 7 on the new mobo proved to be an exercise in frustration. Microsoft also said they would not provide support for it on Skylake platforms, so it was time to say farewell to it and plant myself into the Windows 10 world. (And please keep your comments if you don't like it; this is not the forum for it.)
Besides the monitors, hard drives, and SSDs, another thing I did not replace was my USB scanner. It was made years ago for XP and Vista, and the latest version of the drivers was made for Windows 7. While it installed apparently without issues, the scanner fails to work after the first scan. The computer had to be rebooted every time I wanted to do more than *one* scan. The scanner works fine using the built-in drivers in Windows 10, but it offers no control over any of the parameters that the scanning software gave me. Neither option was acceptable.
Years ago I had to discard a perfectly good scanner when I switched from XP to Vista (SCSI card, yikes) so I refused to spend money on a new scanner again. I tried to keep the older desktop on my desk so I could use it, but juggling two keyboards and mice every time I wanted to do a scan was far from ideal, and it just made my computer area feel crowded.
Enter VirtualBox from Oracle, a free program to create virtual computers. One of its features is the option for virtual computers to access USB devices, so I thought this was what I needed. After creating a virtual Windows 7 installation, I installed the scanning software in the virtual computer -- the scanner works inside the virtual computer exactly the same as it used to. And since the virtual computer is seen by the real OS as another computer in a local network, I made a shared folder to save all the scanned images to it, and from there they are moved to the real OS where I can do all the manipulation with Photoshop.
While this adds a bit of complexity and extra time, it is preferable to keeping a second desktop around (which would need to be booted every time I wanted to scan something, anyway). And it definitely will allow me to continue using the scanner until the day it finally goes to whatever place scanners go when they die.
So take that, technology! Carnotaur wins this time! RAWR! >:D
PS. Yes, you could say there was still planned obsolescence by replacing the desktop, but the old PC is more than capable to be used as an HTPC and media server, something that I've been wanting for some time but never got around to do.
Is FA glitching with scraps?
General | Posted 10 years agoI have had three people tell me they never saw any notification about my recent sketch. Maybe that's why I never got any takers to my request for redlining it?
XNA models found; looking for more
General | Posted 10 years agoMany thanks to
corwyn for letting me know about XNA models. After some Google searches, I found both a program to load and pose them, along with several cool models, including some unexpected ones -- the Basilisk, Wyvern ride and red oriental dragon mount from TERA; a deathclaw from Fallout 4; Lizardman from one of the recent Soul Calibur games.Still trying to locate a few:
Sangheili and Kig-Yar
Krogan (rust colored)
Aman male
Any cool reptilian humanoids/ferals
I also found Argonians but they won't load into the XNA posing program for some reason, so looking to see if there are other versions. Would be nice to find the SAM variant. ;)
Probably should go unsaid that I want them sans clothes/armor. What some call "romance" version. ;) I also need to find the process on how to get these guys into Poser and place them into my collection of props and backgrounds. And then let my pervy mind come up with uses for them.
