Minecraft
Posted 14 years agoWell, I'm doomed. A few days ago,
voxdragon111 gifted me a copy of Minecraft after I'd expressed a little curiosity in it, and got me into his server with
lucifurfox and a few more of our friends.
Damn, that silly little game is addicting. I think one of the reasons I like it just so damn much is it goes back to my days of being a little kid with Lego. I LOVED Lego. Before we got a PC and I discovered gaming (probably the worst mistake my parents ever made!), I would spent hours upon hours building Lego in my room. I made everything from entire towns to castles to my own huge Starfleet out of the stuff, just littering my bedroom floor.
As I got older and more skilled, I would make even more elaborate things. I think my favourite was an all-black model of a Pyro GX fighter from the 'Descent' series (http://media.moddb.com/images/mods/.....6094/33913.jpg). ANd now I have access to this new toy, that feels like building with Legos all over again. Just without the pieces all over my carpet. And Creepers. Fuck Creepers.

Seeking an Artist...
Posted 15 years agoHey everyone, I'm hoping you can help me out.
I've have a few small tweeks to my character since Modem did his amazing reference drawing for me, and I'm in the market to get a new reference sheet done up for my personal character (That would be Kaar :) ) Please toss me suggestions for artists that you think would be good for doing reference pictures for canine type furs such as myself.
Also, if you know any that can do really good horses, I'd also be more than willing to hear you out, though I won't tell you why ;)

You know you're from Calgary when...
Posted 15 years agoYanked from
dragoneer, funny enough
1. Go to Google and type, "You know you're from (your city or state) when...." (hit "I'm feeling lucky")
2. Cut and paste the list.
3. Bold the items that apply to you
Okay, now while my hometown *technically* isn't Calgary, I did grow up there, so I think it applies more than Vancouver...
• the temperature goes ABOVE minus 15 and you get excited.
• You measure distance in minutes, not miles.
• You can say “minus 30” without fainting.
• The local news reporters have been on the same station for so many years that you don’t remember a time when they weren’t there. (Darrel and Barb)
• You say “Yes, ma’am” and “Yes, sir” to your own parents.
• You call it “The Deerfoot”, you know what a Chinook arch is, and counting Flames car flags is a hobby.
• “Spring” is the grass being green for two weeks - then it’s brown...for the rest of the year.
• Directions include the direction to take on the Deerfoot.
• The rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton is a real issue – it is not just about the hockey and football teams.
• You have been known to go to the store for a Slurpee at minus 30.
• The speed limit on the Deerfoot is 100, you’re doing 115, and people are still passing you as if you were standing still.
• You know exactly who has been in your driveway by the tire tracks/footprints in the snow.
• You dread the Chinook for the headaches, but look forward to the next one when you are stuck waiting for a bus at minus 25.
• You discover that you can get a sunburn through your car window.
• You listen to the weather forecast before picking out an outfit. And know you're still going to be dressed inappropriately at some point as the weather is not forecastable.
• You know that even though we just got 3 inches of snow that it won’t make good snowballs or snowmen because it’s too cold for the snow to stick together, but it will stick to the ground until the next Chinook
• You remember when you thought this was a big city.
• You fall asleep on the train and think that you will wake up at your stop because it’s the end of the line. Then you remember that they extended the line right after you miss your station.
• You know the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance in summer, and by distance and the wind chill factor in winter.
• Cold water comes out of both taps.
• You know that potholes are inevitable.
• You carry jumper cables in your car all year-round... for your OWN car.
• You have known someone who has had one belt buckle bigger than your fist.
• You know how to do the Ye-Haaaaaaa.
• You get the morning off work to attend the Stampede Parade (and some of you still get paid for the time off.)
• You attend a formal event in your best clothes, your finest jewelry, and your cowboy boots and Cowboy hat - no matter which gender you are.
• You go shopping at IKEA on a Saturday night for fun, not because you need or want to buy anything.
• You can wear a T-Shirt one day and the temperature can drop 30 degrees by that evening.
• You catch snowflakes on your tongue in winter, dance in the rain in summer or vice-versa, because you've seen both conditions in the opposite seasons.
• The Pastor can add a reference to the Flames into his/her sermons. (Especially if we make the playoffs, Go Flames Go!)
• Three generations of the same family sit together in worship.
• You see more Flames flags than Canadian flags.
• You know someone who ate the 72 oz steak and got it for free.
• You prefer Peter’s to McDonalds.
• You’ve seen a wild animal in your backyard and you live miles inside the city limits.
• You know people with leather seats are just asking for it.
• You know where the nearest Brewster’s is.
• Your idea of the perfect summer afternoon involves rafting on the Bow with a six-pack and a dozen of your best friends.
• 45 minutes to work is the average... on a good day.
• On any given day, there's something someone's allergic to somewhere in the air.
• We have four geographical regions; how many do you have? And you know that if you don’t put the quadrant in the address your correspondence could end up just about anywhere.
• Let's get this straight; it's called a "gravel road". Your Lexus WILL get dirty.
• You drive a pickup truck because you want to.
• You know 4 seasons – almost winter, winter, still winter, and road works.
• You go to the gas station and there is a sign in the window that reads, “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service!”
• Yes it's my truck, and no, I won't help you move!
• You go up the Tower for lunch on special occasions.
• You've swam in Sikome Lake, and not worried about the ickyness of it.
• You've walked through the screen on the patio door.
• You've sat in a traffic jam on the Deerfoot and when you got to the end of the crawl there was nothing to explain the jam, maybe just a stalled car on the shoulder.
• You remember watching Buckshot and Benny and wondered if they would mention your name on your birthday.
• You didn't have cable...you had CBC, CTV, and a bunch of static.
• School very rarely gets cancelled because of the weather. And you will sit on a bus for two hours in a blizzard just to be one of the 20 students who actually show up.
• The posted speed limits are just suggestions. Just don't get caught.
• You watch the fireworks from Scotsman's Hill.
• You’ve skated at Olympic Plaza.
• The Saddledome is "The Saddledome” or "The Dome”, not the Pengrowth Saddledome.
• You drive with the top down every chance you get.
• You state your destination by district as if the city was just a bunch of little towns sewn together.
• You know the nicknames for some of the districts and people understand where you mean when you use them. ie: The Hills - Foothills Industrial; The Belt - anywhere south of the tracks downtown and north of 17 AV; The Hood or the Ghetto - Forest Lawn; The Hood, or NE - Falconridge. The city evolves.
• Bike paths!
• Heritage Park!
• The Zoo!
• You've walked several blocks in sub-zero temperatures during a blizzard to go to the Dairy Queen for a Blizzard.
• You cheer for the Flames during hockey season, the Stamps during football season, and the biggest rowdiest rafter on the Bow in between.
• You remember exactly where you were when the Flames won THE cup. (Lord Stanley's Little Champagne Mug.) Ah, the Stanley Cup for all those who didn't get my reference.
• CKXL or CJAY? You had a preference and if it wasn't C-Jay then it isn't C-Jay now.
• You watched the Stamps trounce the Alouettes, even if you don't live here anymore. Yay, Calgary is home to the Grey Cup again. Now, to the boys with blades on their feet: Your turn.
• The first words you say to another human being in the morning are: Make mine a double double.
• You know that gunning it on ice to try to get going is only going to make the ice slippier.
• You remember when the child bus fare was 35 cents, yet you still had to trick the driver by feeding 20 cents in pennies in.
• You think pushing the button at the intersection half a dozen times will trick the device into thinking 6 people want to cross.
• You hit the button to heat the Dalhousie bus shelter even though you know it's pointless.
• You know how to navigate downtown without having to step outdoors. And if you don't you will want to when you learn how. It's freaking cold out there somedays.
• You've taken a nap in the Devonian Gardens.
• You know about the +15 rocks!
• You drive Sarcee, just to admire the view.
• You just love to hear Calgary mentioned in a novel, or a narrative. Not about news or sports. Just to see the town's name randomly in print in someone else's story.
Good god that's a lot of bolded lines o.o

I Just Realized Something...
Posted 16 years agoOkay, for the record, I hate Twilight. Maybe it's because I don't think vampires should sparkle. Maybe it's because I had fads. Maybe it's because I have a kid sister IRL that has brought the over-saturation of the damn saga to my own family.
Anyways, I had a little revelation relating to the Twilight saga today. For those fortunate enough not to know, the Twilight series is basically about a love triangle between a teenage girl named Bella, a vampire named Edward, and a werewolf named Jacob. So, tomorrow at my local mall, a few actors from the Twilight movies are going to be signing autographs. When I left the mall at close, there were already about two or three dozen people in line, with lawnchairs and sleeping bags. A good number of these were young girls, maybe 16-18ish.
My first urge as I passed by this line was to inform all of these fanatics that they were just this side of insane, waiting overnight just to get a scribble on a piece of paper. Then I noticed a few of the shirts they were wearing. Two in particular really stuck out to me; 'You can have your vampire, I WANT THE WOLF' and 'I'll HOWL for Jacob'
I thought about those for a moment, and then it struck me. Massively popular movie, hooking young girls into fawning over a sexy werewolf...wanting to join his pack and be a werewolf with him...'Holy shit'. I thought. 'This movie is going to tug a lot of young, teenage girls towards furry.'
Seriously, think about it. One of the MAJOR starting points for the furry fandom was the were community. Now there's a very popular teen romance flick with a werewolf as one of the main characters. It's going to be like what Interview with the Vampire did for goths. So yeah, for all you straight furs complaining about there not being enough straight girls in the fandom...
Happy hunting, more are probably coming, and they'll be hot for wolves ;)

Tournament Get! (WH40K Geekery ahead!)
Posted 16 years agoSo I played in my first-ever Warhammer 40k tournament yesterday. And wow, it was fun. I've been spending the last several months preping my army; Painting it, play-testing the list, tweaking things here and there, and I'm so glad the time I put in was worth it. My legs hurt like hell and I had virtually no voice to speak of by the end of it, but it was worth it.
As for how I did, that wasn't bad either! I don't know my exact placing yet, but I came away with 2 wins, a loss and a draw, and I'm especially proud of the draw since it was against Imperial Guard! (Oh god, the pie plates!)
Anyways, there's my geekery quota for the day! Oh, and for those of you interested (And actually still reading :P), here's the list I ran. (It was an 1850 point tourney)

For the Win/For the Lose [Part 2]
Posted 17 years agoI split this into two because I realized it was getting far, far, far too long as one journal...
Now, For The Lose:
WARNING! CANADIAN POLITICAL CONTENT!
So this morning, Michaëlle Jean gave our Prime Minister permission to 'prorogue' Parliament, instead of facing a non-confidence motion in the House of Commons on Monday. That is, she is letting Stephen Harper take his ball and bat and go home like a whiny little snot-nosed kid. Aside from the fact that this has now given the Conservatives six full weeks to launch a mass propaganda campaign, slamming and denouncing the opposition parties, it has also set a VERY dangerous precedent for ALL future governments.
What I mean is that now, because of Stephen Harper, any government that faces a non-confidence motion can simple walk over to Rideau Hall, knock on the door, and say 'The House of Commons is being mean!', and get the place locked out for six weeks. Harper has taken the FUNDAMENTAL idea of the House of Commons, that to govern, you need its support, torn it apart, eaten it, and then used it as a spitball to fire upon the 62% of Canadians that DID NOT EVEN VOTE FOR HIM.
What's worse, our government will now essentially cease to fuction for the next six weeks, in the midst of a continually worsening economy and global disintegration of credit. Our Parliment will not sit again until President-Elect Obama takes his seat in the Oval Office. Unlike our southern neighbours, however, nothing in terms of policy or budget can be accomplished until then.
I supported the idea of having a Coalition Government. While I do not like Dion, and am very much looking forward to his replacement, I am still of the STRONG opinion that our MP's need to start learning how to work together and compromise, to try and create policy and legislation that reflects the whole of the country, not just the West. And I'm saying that while living here in Alberta. While I'd prefer that a coalition was not reliant on Bloc support (A party I think shouldn't even exist), it is still more reflective of Canada than Harper's 'Rule like it's a Majority' policies.
So here we are. Thanks to Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, we are now staring the most divisive issue Canada has faced since the Conscription Crisis of WWI right in the face. I hope Harper's mother has the milk and cookies ready for when Stephen gets home with his bat.

For the Win/For the Lose [Part 1]
Posted 17 years agoOkay, first off, let's do the For the Win:
New MacBook Pro FTW.
Now that my classes are done, I've actually had a bit more time to putz around with the brand-new, souped-up MacBook Pro that arrived two weeks ago. By Putz, I mean install and play some of my favorite games, including Company of Heroes, Civ IV, Left 4 Dead, and Team Fortress 2.
Oh. My GAWD. This is my first DX10-enabled computer, and jeebus, the performance, especially in CoH, is INCREDIBLE compair to my old Jekyll and Hyde (Yes, I name my computer).
Oh, and incase you're thinking "A-Bwaaa? Games? Mac?", I use Boot Camp, letting me partition my drive and run Windows, play games, and all that fun stuff.
I think it's safe to say I won't get much studying for finals done XD
New Computer Stats (15-inch MBP):
OS: 'Romulus' = Mac Partition (Mac OS X Leopard 10.5)
'Remus' = Windows Partition (Vista Ultimate 64-bit)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 @ 2.53 GHz
RAM: 4070 MB DDR3
Graphics: Nvidia 9600M GT w/512 MB GDDR3, Nvidia 9400M integrated
Storage: 320 GB 7200-RPM HDD

Remember
Posted 17 years agoToday is Rememberance Day. Today, 90 years ago, World War One ended. 90 years ago today marked the end of four long years of a war where the front barely moved 10 miles in either direction. They called it 'The War to End All Wars', 'The Great War'. But 21 years after those last shots had been fired, 21 years after the western world had believe that it had signed the last peace treaty it would ever have to sign, the Wehrmacht crossed its eastern border into Poland.
In World War One, it is estimated 8,500,000 soldiers lost their lives. Of those, Canada gave up about 55,000 of her sons for King and Country. Remember them.
In World War Two, almost 21,000,000 SOLDIERS were killed. That abhorrent loss of life is not even half of the total number killed because of the war. In that war, 37,000 Canadian soldiers gave their lives to drive back Hitler in Europe, and Imperial Japan in the Pacific. Remember them.
Since World War Two, Canadian men and women have fought for peace or freedom in Korea, Bosnia, Serbia, and other theatres I am likely forgetting. And even now, the Canadian Forces are working to give the Afgani people the freedom they have not had since the Cold War. Since 2002, Canada has lost almost 100 soldiers. Remember them.
Today is Remembrance Day. On the Eleventh Hour, of this Eleventh Day, of this Eleventh Month, please, take a minute, and Remember.

In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872-1918)

Kaar: Apple Specialist
Posted 17 years agoYes, you read that right. I just got an e-mail this morning offering me a position at the local Apple Store. Considering that right now I'm working in a restaurant kitchen, which, for those of you who have not worked one, is a high-stress, highly-abrasive environment that feels like a highschool locker room with all the homophobic jokes and talk of 'nightly conquest', this job at Apple is a seriously BAD-ASS career change.
I am one seriously excited folf. :D

AC Meme! (Yes, I'm going!)
Posted 17 years agoIf you're going to AC, say so, and do this in your journal!
Where will you be most of the time during the day/s?
No set place yet. Probably going to be spending a lot of time in A) The dealers room, gettin' my pr0nz on (And who isn't, honest? :P), my room, and seeking out friends.
Where are you staying?
Main Hotel (The Westin)
Who will you be with?
Seifer, Vox and Shiro are my roomies.
Do you do free art?
*laughs* Sure, if you can call it 'art' :P
Do you do trades?
Four words: I am not worthy :P
Do you do commissions?
See the above two answers :P
Do you have prints/ CDs ?
For the record, not every fur is an artist...
Do you do badges?
Moving on...
What is your gender?
With a name like Steve, I hope like hell I'm a boy.
How old are you?
Currently 21. FINALLY legal in the States!
Can I touch you?
Please keep something in mind: I'm engaged. I'm not at AC to yiff, I'm there to hang and chat. That said, if you know me well already, you know I won't mind a hug :)
Can I talk to you?
Hells yes! :D

Movin' On...
Posted 17 years ago*blows the dust off of the journal*
Well, as it's become more than obvious, I don't post here very often. But, I felt the need to get this into writing.
I'm 22 years old. I turn 23 at the end of August. In today's world, that makes me feel real old for some reason. Especially because I still live with my folks. Of course, given todays housing market here in Alberta, you can forgive me. Anywho, I'm digressing a bit.
I'm writing and thinking because it's time for a very big change in my life: I am moving out of the house I grew up in, and this time, more for good.
I moved out two years ago for school, but it didn't REALLY feel like moving out. I was more just on...an extended leave. A lot of my stuff had stayed at home while I was in dorm, I still had a room waiting for me back in Calgary, and besides, once the school year was over, I was back in my old house anyways. And after determining that no, engineering was not for me, I stayed there and worked again, making back the money I'd wasted.
Over the last year, I've been going to college again, getting myself on track for something I've always really WANTED to do, but never really had the courage for before now:
Teaching. I want to teach. But not just anything, I want to teach high school Social Studies. I want to get kids realizing why it's important to vote, and why it's such a privilege to. Why history is important, and how it can be very, very cool.
So, what does this have to do with moving out? The University I'm going to to get my Bachelor's of Education is not in my home town, it's back where I flunked out of engineering. But this time, I'm not going into dorms, but moving in with a few very good friends up there. It's been a tough choice, going there instead of the university here. It'll be more expensive, I have to leave this town, where a lot of my friends (And my fiancee!) are, as well as a lot of familiarity, but the UofA is a much, much better school, especially for education. And besides, Vox'll be joining me as soon as he finishes up his school!
Also, like I said, I'm going to be 23 when this new academic year starts. I need to quit being dead weight to my folks. :P
So, as it gets closer to the actual day in early July, probably very soon after AC, I'll try to put up an update or two.
