For the Washington folks out there
Posted 16 years agoHey guys, I promise I'll actually put up some new art soon, but in the meantime, here's something that's on my radar.
In three weeks, Washington State will vote on whether or not to keep their domestic partnership law. People opposed to granting same-sex couples legal protections filed Referendum 71 to try to repeal the existing law that recognizes domestic partnerships. The referendum was certified on Sept. 2, and ballots will be sent to voters by Oct. 16.
Voters in Washington have a history of supporting equality, but this isn't a presidential election year, so more conservative, older people are significantly more likely to come out and vote. Recent polls show that if the election were held today, only 51% of the likely voters in November would vote to approve Referendum 71 and allow Washington to keep same-sex domestic partnerships. Most people polled didn’t even know that Washington’s domestic partnership rights were being questioned. They also don’t know that they will need to vote "approve" to keep domestic partnerships legal.
If any of you live in Washington and are over 18, I encourage you to vote "approve" on Referendum 71. I went through a lot of talk about equality and fairness when I posted about Prop 8 last year (which had similar polling numbers...), but I think this is an even clearer-cut case. The word "marriage" isn't on the table here. It's not just a question of the principle of equality here -- these are the basic rights that allow people and their families to function. Even if you don't personally believe in same-sex marriage, surely we can agree that all committed couples and families deserve basic legal protection.
If you're not a Washingtonian, or not 18, you can still help by spreading the word! If everyone in Washington voted, this referendum would have no trouble passing -- don't let it fail because people just never heard about it.
Thanks a bunch for reading, guys, and for going out and voting! Art to come soon <3

Why do I only post about music here?
Posted 16 years agoSorry to folks who have to delete all these journal notifications because they don't listen to homo music >_<
That being said, I know a number of folks on my previous music posts have been fans of acts like the National, so I wanted to ping them on whether they're listening to the Maccabees' album Wall Of Arms.
It was produced by Markus Dravs, who worked on Neon Bible for Arcade Fire, so there are notes of that throughout, and I think the vocalist's general song-speak delivery is very much in line with the National's sound.
Basically, I've been listening to this album on loop (minus the track "No Kind Words" which gets skipped maybe half the time), so if you like the music that I like, you'll like this.
And because YouTube is the currency of the internet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fs1wkwAMQc

Well, I hope you're happy, hero, because now you're stuck with the consequences.
I think we're all familiar with the rules by now, so I'll just get on with it...

10 albums
Posted 16 years agoSo as I've been listening to my giant playlist on shuffle here, I've hit on a couple of tracks in a row that had me thinking, "This was an amazing album," so I figured I'd try to distill that into the dreaded Top 10 list.
This excludes a ton of albums I love to death, but I think that each of these is probably formative at least of my musical tastes if not my personality on the whole, and they each stand up as cohesive albums rather than just collections of good individual tracks.
In alphabetical order (because even just cutting the list down to 10 was hard enough ^_^):
Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs
Bump of Chicken - Jupiter
Daft Punk - Discovery
Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
The Decemberists - Her Majesty
Neko Case - The Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Sufjan Stevens - Come On Feel the Illinoise!
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
So basically, I tend to favor...acoustic, male vocal, narrative-heavy music with complex string arrangements? With some obvious exceptions ^_^
If any of you folks have killer recommendations based on what I've listed, I'm always eager to check out new music! What are you guys listening to these days?

Post-con post
Posted 16 years agoI just wanted to say thanks to the folks who offered me room space, the folks working the various tables flogging my stuff to the masses, and the masses who decided to purchase anything of mine that was on sale!
Also a big thank-you to the people who showed up for my painting panel Sunday despite the late hour -- I had a lot of fun with it! If you guys have any feedback on what was helpful and what could have been done better, let me know <3 That'll be a ton of help if and when I do something like this again, or when I get stuff together to make a new tutorial book ^_^
Thanks, guys!

FC'09
Posted 16 years agoI hope everybody who's already kicking off their con weekend is having fun!
I plan on being down there Saturday afternoonish through Sunday night. I'll probably be hanging out at the Sofawolf table, the FurPlanet table, and the lobby area (check by the bar, haha 9_9). I'll have my digital painting setup with me for the panel Sunday night, so I may decide to take on some quick digital commissions while I'm there, if you're interested. I'll also do sketchbooks on a first-come-first-served basis <3 I'll also bring along the couple of hand-bound portfolios I have left, so if anyone wants one, drop by!
I'll be the tall guy who looks kinda like Jesus (only with a trimmed beard, ponytail, and hopefully fancier clothes) ^_^

FC'09 painting panel set!
Posted 16 years agoFor anyone interested in learning more about digital art in general, or about my process specifically, my painting panel at FC'09 has been confirmed for Sunday night, 9pm-11pm in the San Carlos room. I figure the extra time that will allow will be great if I'm going to try to do something new start-to-finish, and hopefully it won't conflict with people's dinner schedules or other major art events that night that people won't want to miss.
Hopefully folks who are going to be at the con won't be leaving before then, and won't mind spending a mellow evening with me and whomever else decides to come!
If anyone has a topic they'd especially like to see covered, or a question they'd like to have addressed, leave a comment here, and I can use that as a part of my notes as I plan the event ^_^ Thanks, and I'll see you guys there!

1) What was your FIRST video game console?
-An NES. I didn't even know video games existed when my parents brought it home. Little did they know...
2) Name a few games you played on said console.
-The usual suspects: Super Mario Bros., the Zeldas, Metroid, Mega Man, Excitebike, and the Olympics one with the power pad (oh yeah!)
3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently?
-Between the roommates, we have 'em all @_@ But we kinda work in the industry, so what're you gonna do?
4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?
-Not a huge nut, but I played 'em. I like Vega? Or just a good old-fashioned Ryu?
5) Do you think Capcom is a FUCKING awesome company with kickass character designs?
-If you mean Street Fighter, I liked their boyish, cuter designs from a bit ago more than the hyper-muscular stuff now. In general, I think they made a bad decision cutting loose the Clover guys. Kamiya and the Platinum Games crew are responsible for a lot of the games Capcom's put out recently that I've been excited for.
6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?
-People do this? I guess I'd have given people paper towels or whatever with dinner. But for the purposes of the question, I'd probably say something. I take good care of my toys <3
7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG?
-Hmmmmm, I'd probably have to say Final Fantasy VI/Chrono Trigger were the most influential. I go back and play the first Suikoden game like once every year or so, too. I really like SRPGs -- Final Fantasy Tactics is a gem. I just finally got around to playing Disgaea.
8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
-I think 2D has a lot of charm you don't really see in 3D (Odin Sphere), but I also can't picture Shadow of the Colossus in 2D, so I guess there's a need for both?
9) Are you an SNK fan?
-Not especially.
9) Are you good at DDR?
-If by "good" you mean "entertaining to watch flail." Guitar Hero, on the other hand, I play on Expert (unless it's Dragonforce, haHAha. That track I can finish on Hard.)
10) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?
-His Mutley laugh never really bugged me for whatever reason.
11) Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
-I can't remember any specific instances, but I'm reasonably sure I've played games for more than a year of my waking life, hour-for-hour, at this point, and that counts as sick enough in my book <3
12) Do you listen to video game music?
-Sure. The first Katamari Damacy soundtrack is solid gold.
13) Have you ever cosplayed a VG character?
-Hmmm, not unless all the time I've spent naked in a necktie counts as Donkey Kong cosplay <3
14) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??
-I'm not really an arcade guy. How anyone can play with a joystick is beyond me -- give me a D-Pad any day (unless it's from an Xbox controller, in which case you can totally keep it ^_^)
15) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly.
-Hmm, well, I already got FF6 and Chrono Trigger. If I could get a re-release of War of the Lions on PSP that didn't suffer from ridiculous massive slowdown, I'd be a happy boy.
16) Mario or Sonic?
-Luigi, for sure.
17) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use Spider-man as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?
-I'm not really into the brawler-y action game genre, so they tend to hit outside of my strike zone (haha! I just used a baseball reference! ME!!).
18) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.)
-RTS, probably. I just find them stressful >_< Also MMO's are the devil.
19) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love?
-Hmmm, Vib Ribbon? The World Ends With You, maybe?
20) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?
-Oh man, Puzzle Quest had me cursing like a sailor. I was mostly shouting in my head, but there were words flying around up there I haven't said in years... It's not even that I was having trouble beating it. It just brings out the rage in you.
21) Do you own any VG apparel?
-Not that I can think of, but I have some nice man-bags for toting around the DS or PSP <3
22) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
-Ahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaa. Dennis Hopper!
23) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
-Poor Raul Julia...
24) Who's hottest out of the KOF chicks?
-Cornelius from Odin Sphere (no contest).
25) Do you say "old-school" a lot when you're having a VG conversation with others?
-No more than context demands? I mean, if it's a conversation about old-school gaming...
26) Have you ever lent someone a game and they returned it to you damaged?
-If not returning it at all counts.
27) Do you own any imported games?
-Hoo, yeah ^_^
28) Are you ready for this meme to be over, or could you keep going?
-I've seen bigger <3
29) In this scenario, let's pretend you're going to get a video game tattoo! What would you get and where? This can be simple or elaborate.
-I'd get a Shadow of the Colossus "vital" emblem on my body somewhere, and you'll have to use your sword of light to find it. *Please note that I will be trying to step on you while you do so.
30) Have you ever cried after you beat a game? If so why?
-Dude, the scene where Celes is trying to nurse Cid back to health on fish @_@
I'll tag
tann for this one, as I have heard rumors that he is a "video gamer."

1) What was your FIRST video game console?

FC'09 panel time
Posted 17 years agoSo, which time slot sounds better to the FC-bound folks out there?
2 hours on Sunday night, 9pm to 11pm -or- 90 minutes on Friday night, 7pm to 8:30pm?
Is that too late on Sunday for folks? Or does the Friday slot clash with dinner time? Is two hours too long for people to want to sit through a painting demonstration? Personally, I'd rather have more time than less, but I'm curious what other folks have to say.
Thanks for any feedback!

Prop 8 blitz GO!
Posted 17 years agoSo I'm sure most of the folks who will see this have already seen the No on California Prop 8 piece I did, and now
tann has made a similar piece as well.
The more exposure this message gets, the better! I want to formally ask anyone and everyone to make a post promoting awareness for this cause. If you don't draw, make a journal entry! If you're not confident with words, you can just modify this basic info:
=======================================
California Proposition 8 is a ballot initiative in the upcoming November 4th election that will strip the rights of same-sex couples to marry. Same-sex marriage has been legal in California since July -- this proposition, if it passes, will amend the California state constitution to include the phrase, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
Same-sex couples are just a simple majority vote (ie, 50% of votes) away from losing their right to marry the person they love. I urge everyone who is able to get to the voting booths this November and protect gays' and lesbians' equality by voting NO on Proposition 8.
What happens in California this November will be a powerful precedent one way or the other, and folks all over the country and beyond will feel the decision's results. If you're not able to cast your vote against Prop 8 this November, you can donate time or money to any number of advocacy groups that are helping to fight it.
Tell your friends and loved ones to please join us all in voting NO on Prop 8 this November!
=======================================
Someone just messaged me asking what a good way to tell other people about Proposition 8 is without outing yourself! This is a very good question, so I figured I'd post my response here. In it, I mention one of several possible tactics:
"My friend [insert female name here]'s brother is gay, and he lives in California, and she's been telling me about this Proposition 8 thing you guys have out there. She says it's going to take away her brother's right to get married if it passes, and that he's really worried that it might.
I don't think anyone should have the right to tell another person they can't get married just because of the gender of the person they love, so I know I would vote no on proposition 8. Are you guys planning to vote no on 8, too? The objections I see people raising on the internet, like about protecting kids at school, seem important, but the California Superintendent of Schools has said that the law won't change the state's education system at all.
All of the major newspapers in the state have said it's an unfair law, and even big corporations like Mac and Google have openly said they're against it. I know [friend's name] says she just wants her brother to be happy, and to get the same rights that she has, and that makes a lot of sense to me. I hope you guys will vote no, for my friend's brother's sake, and because I think it's the right thing to do. Thanks, guys!"
And then if they're like, "well, actually, we're voting yes because of X, Y, and Z reason, you can address that on a fact-by-fact basis. There's a lot of good information available at www.noonprop8.com. If you don't think they would respond well to an advocacy site, then you can at least use it as a resource yourself to know what some of the arguments being made by the yes on 8 campaign are, and how to address them. Best of luck, and feel free to ask if you have any questions at all!

One year! and a poster
Posted 17 years agoI just noticed that yesterday marks a full year since I've been on FA. I really want to thank folks for all the kind words and support and feedback -- it's been great encouragement to find time to paint when I know there are people out there to share stuff with. I know I've learned a lot in the last year, and hopefully things will just keep getting better!
Also! I think folks have probably already seen it by this point, but the last journal entry talking about how a poster was coming was still up. Well, the poster is officially right here!
It's up for sale now at FurPlanet for $18. They're 11"x17", printed professionally at a commercial print house on super heavy-duty card stock, and they look really nice. For con-going folks, they should be there at most of the major US cons -- just look for the FurPlanet table! Thanks in advance to anyone who picks one up, and let me know how it looks when you put it up!

Fingers crossed!
Posted 17 years agoSooo, I just shipped a spankin' new batch of posters off to FurPlanet for them to distribute! I went to a professional printer for this run to make sure they were tip-top quality, and I kinda gotta say, the print job is boner-inducingly nice. They're 11x17, full color (duh!), UV-coated, and printed on this super heavy cardstock that's thick enough to stand rigid on its edge. Yow!
The upshot of this is that a couple of weeks from now, they should be going up for sale! Assuming, that is, that the posters get there in one piece... I have nothing but respect for our fine postal service employees, but it can't hurt for folks to keep their fingers crossed here, either, haha.
The theme for the image is cool cats coyly courting over cups of coffee, and my goal was to make something graphic-artsy enough that you could hang it up in your living room and not have to explain yourself to guests and relatives ^_^
If all goes well, I'll post the image up soon, with a link to where you can snag a copy for yourself. In the meantime, stay tuned, and thanks for your continued comments and support!

Purely hypothetical...
Posted 17 years agoSo, if I were going to try to offer a panel at FC'09 on digital art, what sorts of things might people be interested in seeing covered?
Assuming I could get a projector hooked up to a computer setup for about an hour, I could run through a quick sketch on the spot and folks could just observe while doing Q and A in real time, or I could take a more finished piece and walk through my process. Or I could just spend the whole time covering technique. Or Photoshop. Or theory -- lighting / anatomy / color / etc. etc.
The list of possible topics goes on and on, but I'm curious to hear what people would be most interested in seeing (as the whole point would be to be informative and helpful ^_^). My level of qualification to talk on those topics may vary drastically, but assuming anything were possible, what would you like to see touched on in a panel?
(Feel free to answer even if you won't be at FC'09 -- if nothing else, this is great info to have in the event I decide to make another process/tutorial book ^_^)
Thanks!

Red = the new blue?
Posted 17 years agoIt's funny looking at my gallery now -- the first half is like blue blue bluuuuue, then there's this sort of purple-y, tan-y segue, and now it's super duper red everywhere all the time. There are a couple of soon-to-be-published pieces I've done recently, and they're both all kinds of red, too...
What gives?
Blue and red are both especially easy colors to work with, I think, but still...
I still sketch in blue a lot, but it has this tendency to get super red-shifted by the end. Part of it (maybe a big part) is that I've been really up on throwing down some basic forms and values, getting the figures and scene pretty well blocked in, then applying a gradient map using that standard Photoshop yellow-red-teal gradient and working from that. It tends to give the piece some really flamin' hot reds and golds, enhanced by the contrasting teal-ish shadows... It's fun times, but I think it's making all my stuff the same set of colors >_<
I may have to branch out here and try something new soon just to buck the trend ^_^

Progress book is now ON SALE for cheap.
Posted 17 years ago--Shameless Plug Below--
So apparently ownership of Furplanet has switched hands, which will now mean that the guy running is it no longer also the guy who runs the whole Furnation deal, meaning that he'll be able to dedicate a lot more time to making sure orders get processed in a quick and organized fashion.
Physically moving all the printing machinery and everything to a new location costs money, though, so right now Bad Dog Books is offering their books sold through Furplanet at a severely discounted rate. The portfolio/tutorial book I put together a while back is included in that list.
The punchline: if you order before the end of April, you can get a 52-page book with a dozen full-color, full-page finished illustrations paired with extensive step-by-step tutorials for $12. I may be biased, but I tend to think that's preeeetty cheap.
The link to buy a copy is right here, and you can direct any questions you may have to the good folks at www.furplanet.com
Thanks in advance to anyone who decides to pick up a copy, and I hope you find the book both enjoyable and useful! Feedback is always welcome ^_^

Process book now available online!
Posted 17 years agoHey, all~
As promised, here's a link to the page on furplanet.com that has my process book for sale:
http://furplanet.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=310
*EDIT* They've got the description up now, but you can still read what I have to say about it in that previous journal post, or check out the front cover ^_^
If anybody has any questions at all about the book, I'm totally happy to talk to you, but any specific questions about ordering it online (like do they take X form or payment, or do they ship to Y country) should probably be directed to the nice folks there at furplanet.com, as I don't really know the answers myself. All's I know is that it's a 52-page, full-color, 8.5"x11" paperback book, and the price is $15.95. Past that, they'll help you get squared away ^_^
And again, for anyone who does decide to snag a copy, and for the folks who were at FC and kind enough to purchase my book there, I'd love feedback, positive or negative, to help me get a feel for what sort of tutorials people enjoyed or didn't feel were as helpful, or were hoping for but didn't find in there, etc. It's always good to hear what folks want!
Thanks a bunch, folks, and rock on <3

Aftermath
Posted 17 years agoSooo, FC is over for me, but I wanted to send out a thank-you to everybody who swung by to say hi and/or picked up some of my art ^_^ It was a good day!
For everybody there through Sunday (or Monday...or Tuesday...), have a good rest of the con, and uhhhh...BUY MY STUFF <3 haha, you should buy everybody's stuff, because it's all totally awesome.
ALSO! Folks who happened to pick up the book, I'd totally love to hear feedback! What you liked, what you didn't like. Hearing reactions to this experimental trial run one will totally help me make something better / more useful in the future the next time the book-makin' urge strikes ^_^ Thanks!

Book update <3
Posted 17 years agoHey folks!
A big thank you to the people who have picked up a copy of my book so far, and a heads-up to everybody who asked about availability on Saturday -- I have confirmation that there are still some copies left as of the end of Friday night, so you should be all set to go get your shop on tomorrow <3
Also, for folks who are interested, I'll be around for the day Saturday, and plan on having a signing session sometime in the afternoon-ish. The folks at the FurPlanet table should have details on that well in advance, so drop by as you're milling around and catch the info there ^_^
I'll be the tall lanky guy in the black vest and the stripy scarf <3
Thanks!

Shameless plug for my BOOK <3
Posted 17 years agoI made a book! I just posted a picture of what the front cover looks like, along with some of this info -- sorry for being redundant here ^_^
The book is called "Work in Process," and it's a letter-sized paperback, 52 full-color pages in total being printed by FurPlanet. It contains 12 finished illustrations, paired with sketches and in-progress shots of each, and a 2-page, step-by-step tutorial after each piece on some relevant technique or theory that I used in making it. The cover price is $15.95!
The timing came down to the line a bit, which is why I haven't mentioned it until now, but it WILL be available for sale at FC next weekend! There will be about 30 copies there at the con, so if you want one, go hit up the FurPlanet table early on and snag it ^_^
After the con, they'll be available for order online through FurPlanet and Lulu -- more information on that when I get it ^_^
So yeah, I'm pretty stoked to actually have some creative output of mine present at the con to share with folks, and I'm hoping that it will be something more useful to folks than just another collection of images. I know I'm always very curious to hear about other peoples' process, and to see their work in various stages of completion -- I made this book under the assumption that I'm not the only one ^_^
So hey, uhhh, spread the word <3 I have a week to make at least 30 people want to throw 16 dollars at this thing in the face of temptation to buy about a zillion other cool things ^_^ Participation is strictly voluntary, but anyone who wanted to pass the news along to folks they know get big thanks and a tip of the hat from me.
