Uggghhhdate
Posted 14 years agoI had my portfolio review today and I have mixed feelings about it. Portfolio basically goes like this: If you have a production course you have to have review. In review all of the head professors of the film program watch what you have to submit (usually your final film for said production course), then basically tell you how much you suck.
So my first one, the wolf documentary, went surprisingly okay. I mean, I still got shit on, but it wasn't as bad as I had made it out to be.
My second one, for FIL 321 Animation, sucked. I worked hard on my animation and it just got shit on. It's a parody of video games, a knight walks through the forest, encounters a rabbit and tries to hit it but misses, the rabbit hits him and he loses one health. The sound effects repeat over a sun-moon cycle and then he has one health left. He does a power attack, misses, rabbit hits him and he dies. Just supposed to be a bit of a haha for people who play games.
Now, I didn't expect any of them to get the joke in its entirety because I doubt any of the professors play games. But seriously, they didn't have to be all like "well I didn't get it so you suck" (not exactly like that, but kinda). As artists we make our work for an intended audience. I made it clear that the professors were not my intended audience. But seriously? You have nothing good to say about it? It's a 2 minute flash animation that I put a lot of time into and is clearly better than some of my classmates' works. Ughhhhhhhh!
I'm just glad it's over with. Fucking bullshit. I had to sit in that damn room for 7 fucking hours. Oh boy I can't wait to do it at the end of next semester :/
I also had to make a game, this was for CAR 233 2D Computer Gaming. We made games for the Droid. Mine actually worked flawlessly and the teach enjoyed it. You go out onto the quad and "collect" batteries. Everything is GPS based, your position and the randomly spawned batteries. When your battery dies game over. Simple, fun, efficient. So that kinda made me feel a bit good.
I've got 2 papers left to write, a 5 pager and a 10 pager. 5 page due tomorrow and 10 page due thursday. Then I'm a free man and I'll be headed back to good ol' Connecticut thursday.
Friday is supposed to be 46 deg and sunny. I intend on riding the shit out of my motorcycle all day.

Winter Break, Adventures, and Fur Suits!
Posted 14 years agoIf there's no snow or salt on the ground and it's sunny out I'm hopping on my motorcycle and going for a long ride when I get home. I need to get all the riding in that I can before they start sanding the roads. You know what 40 degree weather is? Perfect winter riding weather!
I called my grandfather today, apparently him and his cousin went riding on Sunday and cousin Robby dressed up as Santa for the whole ride. I wish I was there for that, that would have been so fun.
I'm heading back home to Connecticut next Wednesday or Thursday (most likely Thursday). I'll probably go camping at my uncle's place up in New Hampshire for the weekend, that way I do that before all of my friends come home and I can have some alone time.
Then on Monday, hopefully, I'll be going back to work for the break. Whoo hoo :/ oh how I love to work in a soap factory (Crabtree & Evelyn [your grandma has probably heard of us]). But hey, it's money that I'm not making.
Speaking of money, I can probably get a good 4 weeks of work in (minus X-mas) so I calculate about $1000 over break. And this is just the cash influx that I need to, finally, buy the materials that I need to make my fursuit! Woop woop! I expect it to cost me roughly $300.
That oughta leave me with plenty to carry me over until tax time when I get some money back for all of the damn books and film I paid for in 2011, which will carry me over to summer when I'm back to work. Though, if my friend can pull some strings, I may be interning in NYC. Otherwise it's back to the grinding wheel in the factory.
Oh, I got a Panasonic AF100 and Canon 7D for the duration of winter break. Expect videos on my youtube and prolly some pics up here

And now for something completely different
Posted 14 years agoSo I got Skyrim on Sunday and I absolutely freaking love it (I had played it over thanksgiving break at home, so I was already exposed to it).
I ~had~ a level 27 Khajiit assassin that was completely badass. I say had because I overwrote the save file with a new character I made. I was a bit irked, but no sense getting stressed out when I know I can't get him back.
So the new character is a Nord ice-fire mage, and she is my new badass character. I'm in the Labyrinthian right now doing the College of Winterhold quests. I have to say I love fighting skeletons. They have low health and just explode in funny ways when you hit them with a dual-charged ice or fire bolt.
Videogames aside, I've checked out one of the new Panasonic AF100's that we got in the equipment cage (since I work there I got to touch them first! squeeee) this is a pretty big deal because we've been waiting for the lenses to come in for weeks. We had 10 camera bodies but no lenses. This camera is awesome, it's full on 1080i HD, solid state with dual SD card inputs and the the functions that the camera has are just amazing.
I've been playing around with it and it's pretty damn great. I'll have to upload some stuff later. Just don't expect anything great, I'm not really planning anything miraculous and I'm shooting a totally manual camera all by myself (there are auto settings but since it uses changeable lenses the auto functions aren't that great).
Can't wait for Winter break, got an AF100 and 7D reserved for the whole break. And that's a big deal because you have to have a project proposal signed by one of the head professors. I didn't because I'm so damn awesome at what I do in the cage. I love my job, I may get paid shit wages and can only work a maximum of 10 hours, but it's so much fun.
AAAAnd that's all for now. More to come after these messages.

Time for a break
Posted 14 years agoWell, I feel pretty shitty about myself right now. While driving back to 'Cuse from home on Sunday I felt absolutely horrible. I was hit with a real bad case of the "I'm gonna go nowhere"'s. And it's partly true. I'm gonna get a degree in filmmaking, but what good does that do me? It's not like I can just walk into Hollywood and get a job. Plus I don't even want to go there! So what does that leave me with? I want to be an editor, but that's probably not gonna happen either.
My procrastination is getting really bad too. My final film for this semester is due today and I've got about an hour and a half to finish it. I know it's wrong and that I should do something about it, but then my procrastination just kicks in again. I'm probably going to fail a class because of it and do not so well in the rest.
I need a break from all the papers and all the bullshit. I'm going up to New Hampshire sometime in December to go camping. I love camping in the winter and my uncle just finished putting in a wood stove into the little shack on his land. The quiet of the woods will give me some time to reflect. I need some truly alone time. Sure, I'm alone right now in my room, but I mean alone alone. No internet, no cell service, somewhere where I am forced to think about things.
Oh, and that final by the way, is the wolf documentary I was so excited about. Turns out there's nothing worth making a documentary about in my footage. It's a sad truth. SOOoo I have to try and take what there is and scrape together something with my super artistic abilities. Thank god art is 75% bullshit and that my program is considered an art program.
Well, I should get back to work.

Did I mention I'm excited?
Posted 14 years agoI can't stress enough how awesome this weekend is going to be.
I'll be at http://www.nywolf.org/ in Salem, NY making a documentary about two nearly extinct species of wolves. How great is that? I'll finally be able to help make a difference.
I'm really into the relationship between humans and nature. We destroy it in order to create our civilizations. But then there are those of us who realize how important nature is and there must be a balance. The wolves are near extinction due to human intervention and it is us humans who are trying to fix what we have done.
I'd like to do similar projects in the future, maybe actually go to New Mexico or Arizona and see what is being done for the Mexican Gray Wolf.
I may not have money to donate, nor the time to devote to charity work, but I can still find a way to help.
I want to leave Thursday after class, but having nowhere to stay, I'll just leave early Friday morning. I'll explore the conservation center most of the day and probably get some shots of wolves whenever I can. Saturday I'll be up early with camera in hand, then get some "interviews" and such done. More shots of wolves {duh} and wrap it up from there. That night I'll review what I have and what I need. Sunday I'll be getting more shots of wolves (good to build up a library, and I'll have awesome clips of wolves for myself) and whatever pick-up shots I need, then I'll be heading back to Syracuse to edit the crap outta the film ASAP. That way if I need to go back and get more, I can. This is still a school project, so I do have a deadline.
It wont be in HD, but it wont be on a shitty low-end miniDV camera either. Plus, I am an awesome cameraman who is always at the right place at the right time.
As much as I want to get close to the wolves, I think I'll still be separated by a chain-link fence. Understandable, but unfortunate.
Damn, I get to see wolves! How awesome is that?! My dad is definitely going to be jealous, heh.

'Hold up my boom box, and say "Listen to this"' + randomness
Posted 14 years agoNote to self: break out boombox earlier.
So I brought my boombox to FF2011 and I have to say it was pretty great. Had it at the parade and just wandered around in the pm. Boogied down with some fursuiters and got people bobbing their heads. Damn, if only I wasn't drunk most of the time I could remember everyone's names! Need to carry around a notepad or something.
Found some glowsticks on Sunday night and a cool blinky thing and grooved with it. Unfortunately my posse and I couldn't find any good parties going on no matter how many people we asked. Ah well. Still a good end.
In other news:::
The rest of October is completely booked for me. I'm going to the NY Wolf Conservation Center the 21st to the 23rd to film a documentary on the nearly extinct Mexican Gray Wolf and/or the Red Wolf.
The 29th I'm potentially going to a meet up nearby. Only know a few people going, but always good to make new friends.
Ba-dum-da-tshhh----what else...
Oh, I'm broke so I'm sleeping in my truck during the documentary. I can barely afford the gas to get there. I don't look at it as "oh woe is me" but more of, holy crap I am so glad I own an SUV with seats that fold down flush with the back. That'll be an adventure.
Don't have anything planned for November yet. Just Thanksgiving break is all that is certain.
Well, back to the day-to-day crap of being a college student. wheeee /sarcasm

FF2011 Hrrnnnnngggg!
Posted 14 years agoOh man can't wait! 4 days left!
People doubt my ability to not purchase a damn thing at conventions. But it is possible and I do it all the time. My only expenses are gas and hotel. I bring my own food and alcohol, water is free, and just simply enjoy the sights and sounds with friends.
When you're a poor college student that doesn't own a credit card, you learn pretty damn fast how to manage your money when it comes down to the wire.
I'm spending $200 total for this trip. What about anyone else attending? What are your estimated costs?
... that's not to say I don't want to buy anything either. I would love to get commissions done... but I can't afford them v.v

Annnnimation!
Posted 14 years agoI love animation, and I love making hand drawn animation. it just takes so much damn time and effort. 2 hours just to make 24 frames, and there isn't that much detail in them! I completely understand why huge teams of people do this... and lone people use flash! but there's a certain craft to traditional animation, something I think that has been lost with technology. Oh well. It'll help if I had an actual light box instead of the one I got for viewing slides. Had to custom cut my own paper XP
Fun times
Can't wait for FF2011!

Dave is driving across the country to spread the ashes of his 16-year-old dog in California. At age 13 his German Shepard, KaDee was paralyzed in her hind legs and was equipped with a set of wheels. The old girl just wouldn't give up. This ride is also to raise money for the Berkshire Humane Society and the Catskills Animal Sanctuary.

Borrrreeeeaaaarrrrrooooorrrrreeeeddddd
Posted 14 years agoI'm bored. Got outta work about 45 minutes ago and been home for about 35. Guh. I can't tell if I like 2nd shift or not, but at least I don't have to be in at 8am. Fuck that! I get today (Wednesday) off though! Whoo. Gonna suck next week, especially because I've got Friday and Monday off also. So a smaller check, but hey, more me time.
After a couple of pay checks I'll buy some fur and foam and get started on my fursuit. I just keep thinking about having one while I'm filling bottles up with lotion, or puttin pumps on them, or labeling them, or packing them out. It'll be awesome, especially since I'll save oh... $1700ish by making it myself.
I got my motorcycle license last thursday! Whoo! Now if only I had a motorcycle to ride :/
Do I save up for a bike or for fursuit supplies? Hopefully my friend and I can get the clutch fixed on his second bike. If I do, then he'll let me borrow that for the summer. Pulled out the entire clutch and waiting for the new (used) clutch kit to come in. Then we'll purge the hydraulic line and pray for the best. Otherwise it's getting parted out. Which would suck because it's fine other than the clutch.
Other than that, there's really nothing else going on right now. It's summer and I'm at home. Whoo freakin' hoo.

Posted 14 years agoProductivity up
Posted 14 years agoWell, i feel rather productive. just did a couple of drawings within two hours and a doodle. whoo! doodles. Will ink and upload tomorrow and throw the doodle in the scraps right away.
13 days to my birthday, about 4 weeks until school is out, and a whole planned summer of fun.
First thing on the list: get motorcycle license.
then it's a job, then with teh monies I get, I'm gonna start my fursuit. w00t. the rest gets put away.
sick of this school crap. 2 years left. dunno if I'm gonna do grad school and get my masters. I'd rather just start making movies right away.
oh well, sleepy time.

Small Town
Posted 14 years agoSo, I just listened to the song by John Mellencamp, and I'm really missing home right now. A town with about 8,000 people, and it's so large it would take two days to walk the border in a full circle. Our center of town is the fairgrounds which is empty except for Labor Day weekend, there's three antique shops, a coffee shop, a british tea shop, and a ye olde candy shop. Local high school is just up the road where my friends and I graduated from. The town transfer station (or dump as we call it) is not too far away. Found lots of goodies there in the recycling shed.
I remember walking the back roads at midnight with my friends causing all sorts of mischief. I remember the first time I got drunk at my friend's house while his parents were away. I remember the good laughs I've had with old friends, friends I've lost, and friends I'm still in contact with. I remember the bad times and the heart breaks. I remember whipping down the stretch on route 171 at 90mph for the short quarter of a mile it was. I remember losing my glasses in a river when we tried to get more people into a canoe while investigating a beaver dam. I remember having to bury my 14 year old dog. I remember learning that my uncle had passed at the young age of 30. I remember when my great grandparents passed. I remember building the addition to our home (that's still technically being built [going on 8 years now]).
If my family didn't live in Woodstock, they lived close by, never more than one town over. We were always close to each other, and family get togethers were always a regular occurrence. Fourth of July barbeque, birthdays used to be a big deal, especially at big milestones (40, 50, etc.) Random barbeques in the middle of summer. Of course, there are just the plain ol' calm days. Sitting on the porch in the cool afternoon sun, eating fresh sliced watermelon. Or sitting inside, enjoying the warmth during a cold snow storm.
If it weren't for living in that small town, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I wouldn't have the values and beliefs that I do. I don't think I could have been a better person living anywhere else. I hate being in cities, I would rather see trees on both sides of an old cracked and under maintained road than concrete buildings lining the gridded pattern of roads. I want to drive by farm after farm, seeing nothing but corn and cows. I want to see people outside mowing their lawn, having a yardsale, or just catching up with a neighbor.
I've always wanted to get away from it when I was younger. And I still do want to get away. But wherever I live, I want it to be just like my small town. I can't ever forget about that small town. I could never live in a city, and I don't want to raise a child in a city. Nothing beats the smell of fresh clean air, the sight of old and towering trees, and a small community with a fair that's been around for over a hundred and fifty years.
Shout out to all the people who live(d) in a small town.

Mah music
Posted 14 years agoI fucking love Alice in Chains. Started listening to Again; that fucking guitar line is sick as all hell. What happened to music, when did it get shitty? Oh right, once the 90's were over. I should learn to play guitar just so I can crank out some good tunes.
No sleep
Posted 14 years agoUgh. Just got back from filming. It's 4:30ish in the morning. I've been up since 8am. I wont be sleeping at all until after class. Fuckin' A. Still have to finish a video project that's due in 4 and a half hours. Not to mention that I have to return all of the film equipment at 8. I just wanna sleep v.v
In regards to my last post
Posted 15 years agoapparently things aren't so awesome.
The next morning, just after posting my awesome post, I was struck with a 24-hour sickness that I'm still feeling the aftermath of. I was never more than a few feet from that toilet.
What makes me feel better, is that my dad came over and bragged about how good his immunity system is. Then he got sick later that day. I didn't rub it in his face, but I chuckled inside.
I'm left with a massive migraine and neck pains. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
Starting classes tomorrow as well. :P

It's Chrimbus!
Posted 15 years agoIt's the season of getting
It's the season of cheer
Everyone gather 'round
The bush this year!
Make sure you eat your five pounds of hair or Winterman wont be visiting you! Keep your Chrimbus bush trim and wet, and make sure you know what you want to get!
And don't get the bite! Keep your mittens on!
Seriously though, have a merry Christmas. Be safe and be well.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-----inals
Posted 15 years agoI hate 'em. A long ass 6 page paper is really what I'm not looking forward to. I've got a philosophy exam on Wednesday, but that'll be a breeze. I already took my history exam, so that's over with. Tuesday isn't going to be fun. Portfolio review, I've got to sit in a cramped class room for god knows how long, watch every other film student's film and listen to the head professors chew 'em up and spit 'em out. Then I get to have it happen to me. Starts at 9:30 am and goes until it finishes. Last year we didn't get out until like... 3 or 4ish. Fun shit.
But then I get to go home either Wednesday (not until 5pm) or Thursday (only if the roads are too icy for me to drive on) and hang around there for a while. Got a fur meet at Shrewsbury AMF bowling center on Saturday (that I organized whoo!) then Sunday I'm gonna hang out with my best friend who is down in the dumps. We'll prolly just hang around his house or go driving around blowing off steam and bitching about life to make him feel better.
After that, pff, I don't know. I wont have anything to do other than hang around my house. Maybe I'll take my lil bro to the skate park if there's no snow on the ground. I've been itching to properly try out my new aggressive skates.
Then it's Christmas! Whoo! I'll probably just get one piece of clothing like last year! Then my grandparents will shower my cousin in gifts like the spoiled brat she is! I could care less about how much I get, I really don't give a flying fuck. I'm more concerned about my brother. He's only 14 and got like nothing last year. My cousin got a laptop and all kinds of crazy things. I felt so bad for him, he's still just a kid. He's a prick, but I love him to death and I don't want to see him disappointed, especially on Christmas.
After that It'll be New Years and I'll be in Florida with my girlfriend for a couple of weeks. Gonna go see Tron! Whoo! And we're gonna have an all day taco day!. Then it's back home for like 5 days, then back to school for the new semester. I'll be glad when it's summer again. Definitely gonna get started on making my fursuit. I'd like to have it ready for FA:U, but that probably wont happen and I probably wont go due to cash issues.
Once summer rolls around it'll be work work work. A couple of fur meets in there, my annual guys-only trip to NH, a trip down to Florida to see my girl, then back to school. My goal next year: Don't spend all of your money shit head!
Gonna make sure I have a job during the school year, I ran out of money so fast it's not funny. I had like 2k saved up, then it just went *poof* Film is expensive. Having to pay for processing, telecine, and shipping is not cheap. It's like $300 minimum (500ft minimum). Fucking insane. I'm so glad I never have to use film again after this year.
Well, those are just the thoughts on my head right now. I'm avoiding writing this 6 page paper. I have like... 2 pages done so far. I've been avoiding it all day. Back to work I guess.

Colds
Posted 15 years agoI hate being sick. I'd stay in bed if I could, but I've already skipped all of my classes 2-3 times and I can't miss any of them any more. Dammit. I knew this would happen.
Does anyone else wake up at 6am?
Posted 15 years agoI had to get up early so I could type up my weekly 1 pager for Problems in Film Perception. I figured I'd need a good 2 hours to do it, I only needed 1. So I'm just chillin out in the library right now, wishing I had slept another hour. Looks like a nap is in order today after scriptwriting... or I'll just go to the video lab and start capturing the rest of my footage from FF. Oh boy... really looking forward to looking at a screen for 3 hours. I wish I had my external hard drive right now, I have no idea how I'm going to get the files onto my lappy. Well... I do have to check out a camera on thursday, so maybe I can do some that night.
Going to the mountains of NH to film a short 5-7 minute documentary on my Uncle as he climbs the mountain. It's a documentary with a message! :D
Seriously though, I'm fucking tired, I only got like 5 and a half hours of sleep. I need my 8 hours!

FurFright 2010
Posted 15 years agoYeah, it was fun. I went. Damn straight. Filled up 3 and a half 60 minute mini DV tapes there. That's 3.5 hours :P
I mostly got fursuiters. Gonna capture the video when I have the free time, then work on filtering through the uninteresting stuff and slapping it all onto a dvd and passin it out to some friends. If you were at FF and in a fursuit I may have recorded you. Lemme know.
Not like the whole internet reads this though. Oh well. I'll try to find some of the ones I did get and be all like "Hey! I recorded you! Remember me? I was the dude with the camera and cowboy hat! Naww you prolly don't remember me."
Shit, I don't remember much of Friday night! Good thing I put the camera away. Didn't do any good in the ballroom anyway, too dark in there.
I missed the masquerade and I left at about 1pm on Sunday. Didn't make opening/closing ceremonies.
So yeah, I had fun. Next year I'll be sure to save some more monies so I can afford a room in the main hotel (that and I wont procrastinate).

Posted 15 years agoSo my HP Office Jet 6310 finally shit the bed. As if it wasn't giving me enough problems. Looks like I wont be scanning anything any time soon :P
