Yeah, I come on here every day and I honestly had no idea this was coming...

Well anyway, since this is something that hardly ever happens and I hardly ever have a chance to get art with others, I thought I might as well offer up the chance to anyone who is interested for some art with me! Yeah, So today was my birthday. My 20th birthday, to be exact. That's right, people can officially no longer call me a "stupid teenager." Cheers to that.

Incidentally, it is also  kiwie 's birthday, so go and make sure to wish her a Happy Birthday as well. And watch her, if you haven't already, because she's an awesome artist.

On another note, I went to go see Prometheus today. I'm a big fan of the first two Alien movies, so I was really looking forward to it, because it was supposed to be a throw back to the original Alien. And to its credit it kind of was. But unlike the original Alien, I thought Prometheus was kind of shit.

I know lots of people really liked it, and it does serve its purpose as a horror movie reasonably well (one scene in particular really freaked the piss out of me), but it didn't have the flare the original movies did. And although it's supposed to be a prequel to the original movies, it didn't really do much to explain anything and just made me more confused about the universe on the whole. It's a movie that I actually regret seeing, and the only redeeming part of it was Noomi Rapace, who played the part of the main heroine brilliantly.

Anyway that's my warning. And on the whole, I really did enjoy my birthday, bad movie not withstanding. So cheers to that as well.

I'm sure that everyone's been hearing about novel and movie The Hunger Games, but a lot of people haven't even heard of Battle Royale, a Japanese novel that was also adapted into both a movie and a comic series. It's plot is fairly similar to that of the Hunger Games: A class of high school students, with equal numbers of guys and girls, are taken to an island where they are given weapons and forced to fight to the death until only one remains. After recently watching THG and re-watching BR, I thought I would give my opinion what was good and bad about each film.

Now as far as characterization goes, I'm going to have to say that THG did a better job with making you feel connected to the characters. This is mostly because, in the case of THG you're really only ever seeing things from the view point of the main character Katniss, while BR tries to spread things out among multiple characters. However, I can't say I really liked the characters of THG. All of the adults seemed to be totally insane and/or disconnected from what was happening to the kids (except for the one black guy), and all of the kids were shown as almost completely black and white, with a clear cut line between victims and villains, not to mention they were all pretty cliche and bland. BR on the other hand tried to give most of the characters shades of grey, and even most of the main villains were shown a more sympathetic side at one point. It just gave for more realistic and interesting characters, even if they did lack some depth.

I'm also going to have to give Battle Royale points for setting. There's definitely a disconnect for me in THG when all of it's happening in the distant future, all of the adults look freakish, and the people who control the game can create monsters and fireballs in order to antagonize the combatants. I get that it helps to create a sense of oppression and hopelessness for the characters put into the game, but I just feel that it's all so gimmick. The characters in BR, both the kids and the adults, look like they could have been found by pulling people off the street in Japan. The weapons they use are fairly modern as well, and the idea of having a to wear a collar that will explode if you misbehave and don't follow the rules seems like a much more effective and efficient deterrent from rebellion and motivation to fight to the death than the knowledge that the game masters can interfere in anyway they want at any time. The threat is more palpable for the audience, and therefore much more effective.

As for presentation, there's good and bad in both. THG gets points for having its centralized characters who you grow attached to so that what happens to them hits harder, and one of their deaths hit me way harder than any in BR. It really did try to go for the 'Wow' factor in many parts of the movie and a lot of them worked very well. However, I'm not a huge fan of the shaky cam or the extreme close-up in movies that don't use the Cloverfield or Blair Witch Project approach. As for BR, it's very obvious that much of the movie was made for shock value, and the lack of censoring lets some of the more violent and shocking deaths really get under your skin. The clear and clean visuals also do well to add to the atmosphere lets expression and action show better than they do in THG. However, some of the flashback transitions are really sudden, and they way that BR use text to show internal dialogue broke the flow for me in places.

Overall, I think I'd have to say that, while The Hunger Games isn't a bad movie, I like Battle Royale a lot more. If you haven't seen it, make sure you give it a watch (as long as you can stand heavy violence). I've seen both the original version with English subtitles and the English Dubbed version, and have to recommend the subbed version. While many of the English voices are very good, some of them are kind of bad, while the entire Japanese cast is great.

Note: I'm going to have to admit I'm not exactly impartial. I saw The Hunger Games without reading the book, while I saw Battle Royale after reading through both the book and the manga. Both of which are much better and more in depth than the movie, and are some of what I consider to be the greatest things I've ever read.

I've been trying to catch up on gaming lately, partially out of feeling a need to get more involved with it but mostly out of the restrictions my parents keep putting on me. So tonight I felt like giving my views on two very different games; one that I just beat today and wanted to talk about and another that I actually played a long time ago. The second one is having a sequel released today, so I thought I'd just give my opinion on the original before I play the new one. For compare and contrast reasons.

Psychonauts

Okay, this isn't really a new game, but I only just got it off Steam for 10 bucks and played it for the first time, so consider it a retro review. For those of you who don't know, Psychonauts is about a 10 year old psychic named Rasputin who runs away from his home in the circus to go to a special summer camp for psychics. Throughout the story, he goes into the subconsciousness of a large variety of people, most of whom are insane, to deal with their mental problems and solve a mystery about a mad man going about stealing the brains from his fellow campers.

Believe it or not, but the story of the game is even more bonkers than it sounds. The game has a very large and completely varied cast, all of which have their own little quirks and personalities that often just compound on how ridiculous this game is. The comedy here is superb, and their were many points where I couldn't stop laughing. The sound track and voice acting are both great and both add to the feel, as do the graphics, although the art direction of the game wasn't exactly to my taste.

That said, I definitely wasn't the biggest fan of the gameplay. Most of the game is platforming: you will be doing a lot of jumping, swinging on poles, and walking tight ropes. And you will fall. A lot. There were the many points in the game where I was grinding my teeth in frustration after screwing up and falling of a platform for the fifth time. The game doesn't penalize you to much for it, but often detracts from the enjoyment I had of the game. Of course, I was playing with a keyboard and mouse, so maybe using a controller would fix the issues, so I'd recommend that. The combat is lack luster and repetitive, and any failures that you get will most likely be due to said platforming issues than with actual difficulty of the fight.

That said, I definitely recommend picking up this game. It's something that should be played simply for the novelty of the experience the game provides, and the gameplay problems I had weren't bad enough to keep me from having a wonderful time playing it. Just be prepared for an excellent narrative broken up by sections of platforming rather than excellent gameplay broken up by cutscenes.

On to game #2!

Final Fantasy XIII

I'll be totally honest and say that I'm a really big fan of this series, with several of the games (I, IV, IX and X) being among my favorite games of all time. However, the previous entry in the series, Final Fantasy XII, definitely didn't sit well with me while I was playing it, since I found it to be an overly long grindfest, where it only gave you stunted control of one character at a time and made you have to program the AI for the rest of the party. It was a game that was trying to be a single player MMO, and the only reason I was able to stomach going to the end was because it actually had a really good story. Evidently, Square Enix heard my complaints and decided to go the exact opposite direction with XIII.

Final Fantasy XIII's biggest change is in the combat system. In it you only directly control one character in the party while the other two are almost completely controlled by AI. Apparently, Square's solution to fixing the the problem in the previous game is to overcompensate. Not to say that you don't have any control though. The biggest addition to the game is the paradigm system. You see, each character in the party has three different classes. They can all be mixed and matched, for a total of 27 different combinations for each party of 3. Of these, you can choose 6 of them to be able to switch between during battle at a moments notice. It makes for smoother battles feels more reaction focused than previous entries in the series, and I really enjoyed it.

As for the plot, the focus is on the developing relationships and struggles between the six main characters, all of whom have - against their will - been marked as threats to their world who need to be eradicated. It's a sobering story, emphasizing the forced fate put upon the characters and their growth in response to their desperate situation. I really enjoyed getting to know all of the main characters as the story moved on, and I felt that the pacing of the plot worked very well.

That said, there are a few major flaws that the game had. First, while the plot moved nicely, the game took an exasperatingly long time to give you all of the options for party and gameplay customization that are a given in most other JRPGs, and it feels that the first half of the game is an extended tutorial. The area of Gran Pulse - the main, open-world section, probably given to make up for the linearity of the rest of the game - feels out of place compared to the experience given by the rest of the game. The difficulty curve of the last quarter of the game is extremely steep compared to the early part, with one particular enemy having the ability to completely heal and essentially go super saiyan on me if I didn't kill it within 10 seconds of knocking it under half health.

The thing is, while all of these flaws are fairly big, it didn't stop me from enjoying it all the way through. Final Fantasy XIII managed to deliver a very good story wrapped up in a beautiful package, and I can't wait to see what it's sequel manages to deliver.
