The war for the internet has begun
Posted 14 years agoToday, the US Department of Justice shut down MegaUpload. If you aren't familiar, it's an online file storage system, that allows users to upload files and share them to others via direct links. To be clear this is NOT a torrent site, but rather file storage and distribution.
In retaliation, the "Hactivist" group Anonymous has hacked the DoJ website, the FBI website, the Universal website, and the websites for the motion picture and recording artist associations.
These are in the wake of talks in congress over the proposed SOPA laws, and the upcoming Senate PIPA laws.
The government executed over twenty search warrants in over eight countries, and have arrested several people.
The war has begun. The government has not even finished passing the SOPA and PIPA acts, and they are already attacking and removing websites. And much as I had predicted, the online hacker groups retaliated. This is a war for the "soul" of the internet.. You have big media companies on one side and internet users, hactivist groups, and other people on the other.
The lines have been drawn in the sand, but the question is how far will this go? The government is treading on dangerous ground here, and if they proceed this will escalate into a full scale war for cyberspace freedom.
The sad part is that if SOPA and PIPA are passed, websites that promote the sharing of files or intelectual property of any kind (Including our dear FA) could be taken down for good. Even more sad, is that these bills are being pushed by large media companies that are claiming to loose millions of dollars a year to piracy. But what makes me curious is that they are supposedly loosing money, yet everyone I know that torrents things from the internet torrents them because they are too poor to be able to afford them normally. Most of my friends that can afford to buy DVDs, Blurays, and video games do such and refuse to torrent.
The problem is that there are no real ways to define just how many people are actually downloading illegal torrents without massive invasion of civil privacy and rights. But I will say that of the friends I have.... I can count on my fingers how many torrent... And the rest do not for various reasons.
Removing the ability for people to download information from the internet is an uphill struggle while pushing a giant boulder five times your own body weight.
People seem to think that piracy is a new concept... But theft has been arround for as long as money has.. longer.. The fact of the matter is, people are going to steal things. There's nothing you can do to stop it... But limiting the damage you do while trying to combat it is what should be the most important thing.
Do I support SOPA/PIPA? No. Do I think that piracy is as big a problem as the big media companies want you to belive it is? No.
But the war has begun. The US government and online hacker groups are now at odds... And the question is going to become who blinks first? Something has to give.. And if it doesn't we will see the destruction of the internet as we know it, as these two factions fight over what they each believe to be right.
..But let's not forget the old adage... The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

banrai !!! Terraria - RANT!
Posted 14 years agoIn a nutshell...Terraria sucks. (TLDR at the bottom)
So.. I'm surfing steam, just checking out the deals of the day and what's new... And what do I find? Terraria. I think if they had made an attempt to be original it could have been a great concept.. Unfortunately all they did was copy what Minecraft has done and added a few things. Other then that... WTF? It's a 2D minecraft with worse graphics and a horrible attempt at being original.
A few things to note:
1. The game does employ its own graphics
2. They have made a genuine attempt to add some things to their game that minecraft does not have
3. The crafting system is easier to deal with
4. In game character customization is pretty nice to have
Now the blatant ripoff:
1. They dont even try to hide that its a ripoff. It is the exact same gameplay mechanics, except its 2D not 3D.
2. Many of the sounds are the exact same as in minecraft. Am I the only one noticing this?
3. .... LOOK AT IT! LOOK! ITS A RIPOFF!!
4. I dont really have a four, but it had to be even to settle my OCD, so.... IT STILL SUCKS!
TLDR: Terraria ripped off minecraft, changed the graphics, added a few things, and apparantly think no one is going to notice. I've started a stopwatch to when notch finds out, and mojang studios files a lawsuit.

Avatar - Strong Messages
Posted 15 years agoWell, it's finnaly happened. I've been saving the money for it and we got our Avatar, Extended Collector's Edition today.
This isn't going to be a worshiping fan journal or anything so don't get me wrong here. I love the movie.. it was great. And seeing this extended edition with so much more of the story explained, I just enjoyed it more and I'm very glad I got it.
But where I'm finding the wealth of this is not in the movie itself.. Its in the special features. We got the bluray version, and have been watching the special features discs.
He shows a lot of information about the behind the scenes for the movie, and those are pretty cool. But what I'm enjoying most is a lot of these environmental messages he's got on there. One in particular that I was enjoying was called "A Message From Pandora" in which he tells of a trip he took to Brazil.
For those of you who don't know, there's a lot of big shit going on in Brazil right now. They're planning a major dam, and up to 60 more all over the rainforest to supply themselves electricity in a very inefficent way. I'm not some tree hugger or a hardcore environmentalist, but I can see the problems this is going to create.
One of the biggest problems that this is going to create is all of the indigenous peopel that are going to be displaced by the flooding of their anscetral homes. This is an insane idea that is foreign to most of us who sit here in our homes. But if you want to bring it a little closer to something that you could understand,.. This flooding is also going to impact a city.. .And there are thousands of homes that are going to be forced underwater by this flooding.
Imagine if the goverment decided that they were going to make a dam a few miles away from where you live... And by making this dam your entire town was going to be flooded, and you were going to be moved wether you liked it or not. They're offering you a paltry little sum for your cooperation in moving, and then ignoring all of your protests.
That wouldn't work here in north america... So why are we letting it happen elsewhere in the world? Why is it okay to do this to the native species of what precious few rainforests we have left, but its not okay to do it here in our own homes? Why do we have a double standard here for something so fundamentally important as a person's home?
I know that I personally am going to be looking more into this, and why it's being allowed to happen. I'm not saying that you should rush out and yell at your goverment or run down to brazil to try and chain yourself to a tree. It's just something that struck me and really made me stop to think.
Perhaps there's nothing I personally can do about it. But the more people that are made aware of this kind of thing, the more people can speak up and soon no one can stop it. But hey, that's just my thoughts. And while I'm really intrigued by what I've learned and what I've seen, not everyone will be.
If you want to learn more, I encourage you to. If you want to write this off as some nut hearing an environmentalist message then you can belive that too. I just think it's wrong... And I want to learn more. Take from this what you will

Well, it happened today. My faithful NES zapper finally kicked the bucket. I did so love the NES Zapper. It's served me well and faithfully through the years, and we played a great many games together. But today when I plugged her in to have some fun... She had passed on. I opened her up to try and perform surgery and save her from that big controller drawer in the sky.. But she was too far gone. Just past her prime I suppose. So I thought it'd be fun to have a little memorial, and even wrote a poem to go with it. I hope my little post brings you as many smiles as she brought me over the years.

There's only so much I can take...
Posted 15 years ago... And I've hit that limit today.
As many of you know one Nicholas Umphry has recently betrayed our trust and ended up stealing from us. Well today I discovered yet another wonderous betrayal of our trust.
When I went to get my PSP, I discovered that it too has gone missing. This is beyond excusable at this point. That is a $200 peice of gaming technology that I cannot afford to replace under any circumstances. Not to mention the 4gb memory card that was inside of it at the time, plus one of my favorite game discs.
So I'm done. I'm through helping people just to be taken advantage of yet again. This is the last straw. I can handle a lot of things, but messin with my neice and now stealing one of my video game systems... I am upset beyond words at this point.
All I can say is if he is ever fool enough to come to our door again, he is going to be leaving with less teeth then he arrived.

A spectacular experiment in misery....
Posted 16 years ago... Also known as... My life.
It seems every time something good comes into it, something bad comes in just to fuck me up. We're finnaly getting to a point where we are stable in our lives.. Thanks to the help of a good friend, we were making it through. We had food.. We had bills paid.. We were stable.
And now our headset dies. A $70 USB headset that we used for our laptop and our computers is now completely dead. There seems to be no reason for it.. Its just dead. And as if that wasn't enough fun to deal with, Hikari's tablet is dying too. Which is another $50 - $100 for just a basic simple one.
Isnt life grand sometimes.
Dont pay too much attention to this. I'm just venting my frustration.

Not a happy Fox
Posted 16 years agoYesterday, I was going to get some DVDs for my computer... But we saw a really good deal on Dead Space for the PS3. So instead of being able to burn some things for my personal use, I decided to treat myself a little since we've been so hard off for so long.
So we get Dead Space, and I was quite excited to get home to play it...
Only to find that my PS3 is dead. The drive is busted and not working. I don't know if its the disk sensor or the eject motor or what... But needless to say I am most unhappy. So now I'm left missing a $30 part for my system that we cant afford.
Thanks life.. Thanks a lot.

I can has cellar!
Posted 16 years agoZOMG! We has a fucking cellar!
We were talking with our landlord today, and what we thought was just a closet under the stairs turns out to be a descent into a full blown cellar. I mean who fucking knew? We were like "WTF!?!?" when we found out. So we cleared out all of the storage and went down... and what did we find? 40+ year old preserves!
I kid you not, some of these things were so old that when we cracked the jars they were highly fermented... And smelled so much of alchohol it's not funny.
The positive side? We now have about 12 jars that are all from the 1960s or earlier. :D Including an old brown jug like you see hillbillies always having with moonshine, and a beer bottle from a really old company right here in BC. It was pretty cool.
We cleaned them all out and after a little chat with an antiques dealer, it would seem that some of them have some real value.

Fallout 3 - Fuck you extremists.. fuck you.
Posted 17 years agoAlright. I've heard a lot of back and forth on Fallout 3, and thanks to a friend, Teo, I've recently had the chance to play it myself.
It's not the best game in the world, so I'm not going to rant about how revolutionary it is. It's a fucking fallout 3 skin slapped onto an oblivion engine and given guns. That's about it.
However, I'm not going to say it's the worst game in the world either. It's just a giant sandbox RPG. That's good for thoes who enjoy it.. Personally I loved Oblivion, and I'm finding this... tolerable. It's not GREAT.. But it's not horrible either.
It's a halfway decent game. The mechanics are tried and true and were successful with oblivion. But there are things that make it annoying as hell, like the bullet time when you lock onto an enemy. Sure it's cool the first few times you do it (I damn near pissed my pants laughing when I blew someone's head up with a little 10mm pistol)... But it's over done since it happens EVERY time.. and it gets very annoying as it slows down the game play so heavily.
Frankly, I'm tired of hearing people going "oh it's the best game evar!" or "oh holy shit this is suck fucking crap!!". I will say it quite plainly... Each person is going to get a different experience out of this game.
So don't buy into all the hype both posative and negative... Just play it for yourself and make your own oppinion.

SUCK IT SONY!
Posted 17 years agoWell as many know by reading my mate's journal, our Xbox 360 died about two weeks ago.
After a lot of arguing I got Microsoft to fix it. They said the waranty expired in 2006, when we bought the console in 2007. After a lot of arguing with them, I got this sorted out, and they're going to honor the new 3 year waranty policy.
Well in our panic with the 360 we raised some money to get a replacement console, just in case. But when microsoft said they were going to honor the waranty, I decided that I'd go out and see what the pawn shops had.
A friend of mine works in one, and she said she could get me a PS3 for $225. Well I got there and checked it out, and it was only partially working. The bluray drive was dead and refused to spin or read any discs. So I managed to get them to knock down the price from $225 to $100 and included an extra controller and one game.
$50, a trip to ebay, and a week and a half later... I now have a working PS3... For a grand total of $150.
It took me all of half an hour to get the drive installed and working. And after several bouts of testing, I can now feel safe that it works. The drive is new and a little sticky.. But it works and I am a very happy fox.
So yes.. Woot to me... and SUCK IT SONY! I got a $400 (plus tax) console for $150. lol. Go me!

Stupid stacker machine. I won the damn thing again.
Posted 17 years agoWell, I've once more won the stacking game at the local mall... But this time the machine fucked up and I ended up not getting the camera I was TRYING to get.. The prize selector fucked up, and it only dispensed an iPod shuffle. lol. But hey, I still won, right?
Blasted Ferrets
Posted 17 years agoWell, I had the ferts out today. And somehow at some point the little snots found my candy stash. (I'm hpyoglycemic, so I always have a constant supply of sugar in case my glucos level drops too low). Well they became quite determined to get into it, despite my attempts to keep them out. Eventually I gave in and gave them one of the root beer candies that disolves with saliva.
I then discovered the humor of ferrets trying to eat something very very chewy. lol. It was quite amusing... But it made them happy and they stopped trying to get to my candy.

WoW heads will find this funny
Posted 17 years agoWell anyone who has played WoW and has played a warlock will get the joke here.
For those of you who have not: When you make a warlock, you get demons. When you summon a demon for the first time it randomly generates a name. Well my lvl 10 demon, the voidwalker, got the name Barvhug.
This name needless to say hardly inspires fear. So I petitioned for a GM to change it. After some joking with the GM, he agreed to change the name, and got ready to use the random name generator.
Well he mussed up just a little, and it generated a name alright... And when I could breathe again (from laughing) I told him not to take it down.
My voidwalker is now named... Voidwalker.
It made me laugh.

OKAMI FOR $2! WOOT!
Posted 17 years agoSo I was at the mall today, depositing the rent check... And the food court has one of those stacker games (If you don't know what that is go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YngLWIvJUxU and watch)
Well I was waiting for the bus, and decided to drop $2 into it for fun. The first time I got the hang of the game and got it about half way up. On the second round, I got it all the way to the top and won Guitar Hero 3 with the wireless controller for PS3.
So, not having a PS3 (only 360 and wii) I took it across the hall to the EB. I got the exact price of a brand new copy of Okami for the trade.
So all in all, for $2 I got Okami. lol. Talk about epic.

MORE FERRETY UPDATES!
Posted 17 years agoAlright, well here's what's been happening in the world of the carpetsharks.
Pogo has been pretty happy little critter. I got a ferret ball and she's actually about the right size to use it. Blackpaw has been pretty big and doesnt seem to be able to master the subtle art of moving his ass instead of just his front feet. :P
And at the urging of my mate to make her laugh.. We have a little shirt about the right size for Blackpaw.. And it does fit him. It's a white shirt with the intel inside logo.. But it says Alien Inside. He looks quite cute with it on.

Happy furrets!
Posted 17 years agoWell, last night I got a bunch of 3" PVC tubing. I stuck a length of tube in with them for a tunnel, though it seems only one of them uses it. lol. I took the rest and made a bit of a critter maze for them. I cut out a bunch of lengths and attached them to different joints, ands tuck it on the floor. During playtime they were very interested in what this strange monstrosity was... So I tossed in a couple treats. They eventually figured it out, and had a bit of fun. They're still not sure of this strange looking thing. But they're enjoying it more as they go along.
They're definitely settling into their new environment well. Blackpaw/Roscoe started to "dook" at me and bounce around chasing me through the room. It was pretty cute. Even Daisy/Pogo started to play a bit more. Roscoe got into quite the game of hide and chase with me.. It was exceedingly cute.
While my mate seems adamant not to call them by Daisy and Roscoe, I have learned not to fight against the fiancee. that's just a loosing battle right there. I don't think it matters what their names are, so long as they are loved... Apparently I am wrong, as I so often am.. Being male and all.
Overall, the pair of sagweasles are pretty happy. They're not too much in a tiff over the new location of the cage.. though Blackpaw/Roscoe and I seem to have a difference of opinion of where the litter pans belong. I believe they belong in the corners.. He thinks they should be in the middle of the pen, upside down. So I cheated and locked them down with some provided C-clamps (now I know why they were there. :P ). He argued back with a counter point of tossing the litter pellets. So now I'm somewhat satisfied, and the little litterpitcher is somewhat satisfied.
Well, keep in tune for more diaries of an insane fox, and a pair of hyperactive furrets. Next obstacle.... Bath and grooming time. o.o;
Wish me luck.

Ferrets ahoy!
Posted 17 years agoIn my random luck, it seems that Helly and myself have come across the good fortune to have one of our friends needing to move. Now i know you're thinking "How is this good?"
Well, in the new place he's goign he won't be able to have his ferrets. so we made some arrangements, and now the pair of critters have settled here.
They're very happy little sagweasles... and have settled into life almost imeadiately... Including subjugating the big tomcat of the house with their first encounter.
They're absolutely adorable, and I hope to have more pictures to upload soon. :)

In unplesant times
Posted 17 years agoWell, times have hit me hard. And while I need some money, I am selling my faithful gamecube. I tried to keep her, but with the Wii... .Well... Goodbye old girl.

You open up your music folder in your media player of choice, and randomize the list. Then take the first 15 song tittles, and add "in my pants" to the end, avoiding one such as "concerto in d minor".
1.) Code Monkey in my pants
2.) 7 years & 50 days in my pants
3.) I Want a Girl in my pants
4.) Konya Wa Hurricane in my pants
5.) The Calling in my pants
6.) Free Your Hate in my pants
7.) Ready to Blow in my pants
8.) My Alien in my pants
9.) All The Small Things in my pants
10.) Feel Good Inc. in my pants
11.) My Way in my pants
12.) Jeremy in my pants
13.) She Cries in my pants
14.) Has Anyone Seen My Underwear in my pants
