It was 8.9 off the northeastern coast. It was weaker in Tokyo, but still around a 5.0.

For anyone else in Japan, or with relatives or friends here, IF YOU NEED HELP LET ME KNOW.
I know things are pretty crazy in Tokyo right now, near where I am. Many trains are DOWN. D:
For people who don't know anything about Japan, this is a BIG EFFING DEAL.

EDIT: JR LINES ARE DOWN. D:

EDIT: The Freeways are closed! If you are in a car, find somewhere to park & start walking.
Because when trains are down, railroad crossings automatically shut.
Until people come to manually lift the bars, you can not drive across tracks. D:

Many gas lines ruptured, and people couldn't get home because of the trains.
As a result, there are still fire fighters putting out gas fires all over the kanto plain.
If you're here and can't understand the japanese warnings, TURN OFF YOUR GAS LINES!

EDIT: On the northeast shore where the tsunamis are, houses & cars have caught fire then been caught in waves.
So... there are fires that are drifting along the water.

Narita, one of Tokyo's major airports, is still closed. That means runways are shut down, no planes land or leave.
If a plane is tagged as "American" (from the USA) then they are being redirected to an Air Force base north of Tokyo.
I don't know about planes from other countries, I'm sorry. D:

EDIT: Salt water from the tsunami have flooded over into fresh water sources for irrigation. D:
Japan generally hates to import food, but there will be a lot of crops ruined up north.
Also... the Yen rate will not be looking too good. D:

Phones are back up, but are still severely clogged. (It's hit or miss...)
There is still power in Tokyo pretty much, so the best way to contact people is via the internet.
There are STILL ongoing aftershocks (I thought they were over but I just felt another one), so it's not over yet.
EDIT: It's midnight here, 9 hours after the quake, and there was another aftershock... D: ohgawd I can't sleeeep. D8
Don't forget the waves! It's not just Japan's north shore.
Hawaii, Guam, and all the pacific islands will be expecting 20 foot waves in the next few hours... D:

And hundreds of thousands are stranded in Tokyo...
There is an entire train missing... an entire train... o___o
EDIT: A nuclear power plant's cooling system shut down... O____O

The best people can do right now is keep the Japanese people in your thoughts.
Luckily, buildings here are built to handle this sort of thing.
But it has still disrupted people's everyday lives in Tokyo, which can become disastrous to the poor, elderly, or ill.
Not to mention all those whose entire towns are gone now.



OK. As far as how this has affected me personally...

I went out to lunch out in town around 12:30 and COULD NOT get home until around 7PM.
There are still friends of ours trapped on the other side of the tracks that cars can't cross because of the trains being down.
EDIT: My friends made it back to the base,
but there are still military who were planning on going out for the weekend still stuck out in town. D:

There was some broken glass when we got home and our shelves decided to throw everything on the floor, but no broken windows or furniture, thank goodness.

Everytime there's an aftershock the base must evacuate buildings and we all stand outside until the safety crew gives the thumbs up.
EDIT: They got tired of doing that after a while so now we get to stay inside. XD
My husband's job out here is in public works. He's in charge of fixing all emergency plumbing/electrical issues.
Needless to say his office has been BUSY. With the phone lines clogged, his office is being kept open 24/7 until who-knows-when.
EDIT: All weekend. D<

Things will be BUSY for us. Even after things die down, there will be a lot of volunteer efforts we plan to take part in.
EDIT: I'll be a food chauffeur, making sandwiches & delivering to the office.
