I am now back at home, in Southern California, alone in my room. The only other person in the house, my mom, has gone to bed. The walls are bare, though I might hang a picture up tomorrow. I'm tired and a little sore from the train ride.

I miss him so much right now.

I'm in a house in northeastern Arizona. It's very dry, and very dusty. It's also very pretty.  seregei just walked into the room (it's his room) and gave me a kiss. I pointed out that there's a moth on the large flag of Japan suspended above this bed. He's playing Left 4 Dead (single player).

I couldn't possibly imagine a better way to spend my weekend.

First off, my pain is mostly gone (though it seems to be flaring up now and then), and my mom's insurance will cover having my teeth extracted with general anesthesia. Woo hoo!

I was kind of surprised to learn they have a new album coming out already, but then I remembered the the Red Album actually came out last year. Jeeze, has it really been that long already? Anyway, the new album is out in October (October 27 to be precise), and has the ridiculous name of Raditude.

Dig it.

Except the tooth is still there.

So my second molar (on the right side) is toast. I went to the dentist on Monday, and she tried to save it, but there's just not enough of it left. My wisdom teeth have come in crooked, which has resulted in cracked molars, and in particular the right one got hosed. 3/4 of it is gone, sadly.

So after an unsuccessful attempt at a root canal, my dentist tried to just pull the thing. But as it turns out, I really freak out when someone has their hands in my mouth with a pair of pliers trying to yank out one of my teeth, and as a result, my adrenaline kicks in and overrides any amount of lidocaine shot into my gums. So I still feel pain.

Now my gums are still swollen (though they've gotten better) and sore, and the molar is still there. On the plus side, the dentist decided I need to be put under to have my teeth removed, so she referred me to an oral surgeon. Which is what I wanted for my wisdom teeth, anyway.

RIP. I had no idea that he wrote Christmas Vacation, but I miss him more because of it.

I was at the post office today, and while I was waiting in line, a little old (though not that old, maybe in her 60s) lady got in line behind me. She was in a wheelchair, but I later saw her standing without it, so I guess the wheelchair was just for ease of mobility.

What I quickly noticed was that she was observing things out loud to no one in particular. For example, the line had stretched beyond the roped off section by the time she got there, and the first thing I heard her say was "Line exceeded." She made a bunch of other out loud observations, like the fact that the passport office was closed, and that someone had left a Starbucks drink on the counter, which she hilariously followed up with a note that food and drinks were not allowed in the post office.

I had to keep myself from laughing, because I thought it would be rude to laugh at someone who quite clearly had some sort of neurological disorder. At one point she said "There's something wrong with my foot." And as I was leaving, when she was standing at the counter doing whatever it was she came to the post office to do, I heard her say "Involuntary leg movement."

So yeah, amusing little experience there.

So  amtrack88 and I went to Amoeba Music in Hollywood today, and while he was off browsing his old-timey music (and looking for Total Recall in the DVDs), I was raiding the clearance bins. Since it was buy 3 get one free (phrased differently, but the same thing), and most of the albums were $3, I decided to do some blind buying, picking albums I thought had cool cover art.

At the end of it, I had four albums I had never ever heard of before (hadn't heard of the bands, either), and one that I had heard of. Most of these bands don't even have Wikipedia pages (the one I had previously heard of did, as did one other one). So I went and checked out the website of one of the bands, Dubious Ranger. I go to look up the album I picked up, and it says "pre-order, ships April 21st, 2009." Wut. Apparently the one I snagged was a promo, that had somehow made its way to the clearance bins of Amoeba, where it caught my attention. Score.

I'm listening to it right now, and it's pretty damn good. A bit odd, but I like it that way. So yeah, I lucked out big time.

Earlier today I picked up the album Stay Human by Michael Franti & Spearhead. If you've never heard of them, they're a band that blend hip-hop, soul, funk, rock, and reggae (and probably some other stuff somewhere in there). They're really good, definitely worth checking out.

Anyway, Stay Human is somewhat of a concept album, only the story isn't told through the songs (the songs reinforce the themes of the story, but are not narrative), but through fictional radio segments. These detail the story of the planned execution of Sister Fatima, a community activist who was arrested and convicted for the murder of a business couple on little more than eyewitness testimony, given by witnesses who later recanted their testimony completely. As you can probably guess, it's an anti-death penalty album, and a damn good one. The songs range from angry to reflective, somber to joyful, and the overall effect of the album (if you pay attention to the radio segments) is rather haunting.

It's a fictitious story, yes, but it's based on reality.

This story requires you to be familiar with the story of a young man named Christian, and how I knew him. There's something in my gallery on him, not "The Horsethief" but the other story.

Anyway, I was working, and this woman from the church came in. She went to Chinle once or twice, and for the longest time she's been trying to give me these pictures she took that had me in them. So tonight she finally gets them to me.

Well, I took a look at them, and woah. I had forgotten that Christian was in these pictures (three of them), and so I was caught completely off guard. I had to take a few deep breaths and brace myself a bit.

It's not that I have trouble looking at pictures of him (there's a big one sitting in the hallway right outside my bathroom). But when I don't expect it, it really throws me.

So that's my story for the week.
