Life Lately: New job at Mercury Filmworks!
General | Posted 11 years agoSo much going on. But that’s life isn’t it? In the past couple of months there have been a lot of changes. Some of you already know that I made the move from Charleston, SC back to my hometown in Canada (Ottawa). It’s been nuts! Moving countries, especially after being there for almost 5 years, is difficult. You plant roots in all sorts of places you never imagined, and it’s hard to re-adjust.
The biggest obstacle was the move itself. Packing up an entire house and driving up the entire east coast wasn’t really fun, but it had to be done. Definitely cheaper than flying it all! The move itself took about 2 days of driving plus stops to eat and rest. Everyone was really well behaved, especially Felix who didn’t mind sleeping all day 2 days straight while in his carrier. He was so good!
Upon arrival in Canada, I started settling in. My room is still kind of sparse but hey it’ll do! I haven’t done much unpacking because we are staying with family right now and it isn’t really a permanent solution so things are still kind of everywhere for now. The next big thing was securing some kind of work. I took a bunch of commissions through here, Furaffinity, Facebook and my website, as well as through Kijiji. I started to feel like I could totally do this full time… if I was only responsible for sustaining myself. It’s kind of hard to support a family on an artist’s income. I could probably live on my own quite comfortably but not with a family.
So again once I was a little more settled in, I was in full time job searching mode. I spent a lot of my days applying for work and I got a couple of interviews. At one point I ended up taking a test at Mercury Filmworks. I took a test to be a character builds artist and didn’t hear back for a while. I kind of wrote it off in my mind since I had other opportunities that were making themselves known as well as commissions to keep track of.
I was about to take a job as a summer camp instructor doing robotics classes, which I wasn’t entirely certain I was very qualified for, when I got the job offer for the Builds artist at Mercury!
I was super excited to get the job and I started working last week. So far it’s been insanely challenging learning the new software. I feel incredibly intimidated and inspired all the time. There are dozens of talented artists everywhere I look and everyone is better at doing what they do than me. It’s a bit overwhelming but still I’m trying my best to produce the greatest work that I can. I also have a pretty wicked trainer so I’m not complaining ;)
Needless to say, that starting the full time job 9-5 type deal (which is more like 7am to 6pm because of commuting and family stuff) I haven’t had much time to get my commissions finished. I do however have lots of time on the bus to crochet and read books which is a nice change from my last job where I had to drive the hour myself and couldn't do much but listen to audio books and the radio. So I’ve gotten some progress done on my crochet dolls and crafts which is a nice bonus! I have a couple projects on the go art-wise, including illustrations for someone’s book, as well as a potential comic book project that I am illustrating, and both of those things are kind of eating up my free time outside of work. Yunno and family, friends and the chores that come along with just every day living!

Life stuff:
Quit my job. Was taking away too much from my actual LIFE. But also we're getting ready to move back to Canada so I had to. Been renovating the house and trying to relax a little before the inevitable stress disaster that is moving to another country.
Art wise, working heavily on several projects. The biggest one is the Star Tree story, or "Stratokorona" I'm working on with my husband. The second, a series of kids' books I'm writing and illustrating, the third being random commissions that have piled up that I really gotta get done.

AWA ARTIST ALLEY - GO GO GOOOO
General | Posted 12 years agoIt has been confirmed, I will be attending Anime Weekend Atlanta - [link] - and will be selling my artwork in the Artist Alley! I am SUPER excited about this news. I was at my computer at 12am the day of registration trying my best to get in, and making sure my art was up to date and appropriate. And I guess it was adequate and I got in on time because HURRAY I made it!
I am crazy busy with work but I have made a tentative plan to have a bunch of hopefully great new art by the time the con rolls around, including poster sized prints (finally) and hopefully a few new fanart pieces. Those of you who follow me know that I don't make fanart very often.. unless I am REALLY inspired! I also don't make fanart of anime due to its popularity. I only draw from animes that I fall in love with.
This past year I've watched a few that really stood out; I FINALLY saw FMA Brotherhood (and LOVED it, might be watching it again soon to refresh my memory for some fanart), Kuroshituji / Black Butler, Soul Eater and Ouran Host Club which was a horribly guilty pleasure that I LOVED. So. Hopefully I'll get a few pieces done from those animes. Any suggestions?
I am also going to refresh my bookmarks because they are in DIRE need of attention. I haven't made any new bookmarks in YEARS which is so sad and depressing. Since fanart buttons will not be allowed I will be making more fanart bookmarks. I have my own button press so I was kinda bummed about the no fanart buttons rule, but I'll try to come up with some fun button designs for you guys <3
Also will aim to have at least 3 new vinyl sticker designs for the con. Or more if I can get my butt in gear!

I can't wait to stuff my face with delicious Thanksgiving food! Actually what I'm most excited for is time spent with family so that I can have a baby-break, haha. The long drive up to see the family will be worth it!

General | Posted 13 years agoAs of October 13th.. I'll have been here for 5 years! I kind of feel bad though because I'm rarely very active on here. I'm going to try to change that, though.
Coincidence or not.. I'm starting to take $5 sketch commissions! Just to get warmed up to the idea of drawing again. It's been so long since I drew on a regular basis, being a new mom and all. However I've gone back to work and things have calmed down a bit. I've been using my lunch and breaks to catch up on drawing. I'm dying to get back into the groove and find a comfy spot in drawing again. It might take a while.
So if you want a sketch done, lemme know! I'd be happy to do one for you. And if I don't get any.. I might be randomly making gift art for artists I admire *_* Been meaning to do that for EVERRRrr.

As you may remember, I was taking requests in late January for characters to draw for my February art challenge. It's so far going really well! I'm trying to do something different every day, and get better at another aspect of my art every time. So far I've played a bit with painter, textures, a different painting style, and sketchy work.. I want to get good at speedpainting, that might be my next challenge :)

I've also been meaning to post an official "list" of the characters I will be doing for the month to help me stay more organized. This will also let those of you who have characters being drawn know what day to expect me to draw them. I try to get onto livestream every day to do the drawings, but I can't always make it. But look out on here, twitter or plurk to see when I am livestreaming (other than the scheduled Tuesdays) to see if your character will be the one I am drawing.

I will be doing another drawing challenge this month, and once again I need your help! This month's theme will be original characters. The goal is for me to get better at drawing characters in situations, practicing poses and anatomy.
This is aimed at the furry/anime community, or if you have your own personal characters. I have reserved slots for my friends with D&D characters, so feel free to enter those as well.
Only one character per person, please :) I will need a reference picture of the character and an activity in which to draw them in. I will be doing another drawing challenge this month, and once again I need your help! This month's theme will be original characters. The goal is for me to get better at drawing characters in situations, practicing poses and anatomy.
This is aimed at the furry/anime community, or if you have your own personal characters. I have reserved slots for my friends with D&D characters, so feel free to enter those as well.
Only one character per person, please :) I will need a reference picture of the character and an activity in which to draw them in. Please post them in the Facebook discussion thread ( http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=177090827349&topic=15080 ) with links to images. If you do not provide an activity or setting, I will not draw them. If you don't have Facebook, you can e-mail them to me at kina[at]kina-ink.com

I will provide a final list on my blog once I get 28 valid entries.

Man so it's been forever, but my site is FINALLY done! It took me almost a year to make a new, functioning layout. I have been so busy (well rather, I have just not made or devoted the time that I should have to my site) that I just never got around to it.
At first I wanted to make a flash site and I was going to take forever to make it all fancy and everything.. but then I realized that to be practical and if I wanted to update it at all or make it useful, I'd have to make it a lot simpler.
But anyway, Here it is! https://www.kina-ink.com my pride and joy <3 I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it!
More to come for sure, I want to make more tutorials, add downloads and all sorts of goodies.
OH! Be sure to check out my shop! If you have ever seen me at conventions, you'll see that this is all my merchandise, and that you can buy it now at any time! This weekend is an entire weekend dedicated to art! I'm drawing at the same time with Inaliak and Zeralia, the three of us otherwise known as Kikibee when we get together to draw ^_^
