The big Four Zero today.
Posted 2 months agoYeah... turning 40 today... feel ancient now. Not planning on doing much, painting Gaslands is something I both like and need to do. Have commission work to do. Got distracted over the week playing D&D/Pathfinder 1e solo again, which... okay I know it's designed as a social game, but I've got to a point where I really enjoy making a party to tackle Pathfinder APs. And writing out everything as a story. I sometimes then take those characters or their concepts into games with friends, but it's just a catharsis I haven't touched in a few years.
Speaking off, since December of 2023 I got into Magic the Gathering. When my dad passed in late November a couple friends got together and got me a Pirate themed Commander deck, Admiral Beckett Brass. And so that's become an obsession, still pretty raw in the nuances of the game. Play exclusively commander, and at some point, I'd love to talk shop and share the decks I've made to get C&C.
Gaslands has been my biggest endeavor though, started a youtube channel, and etsy store that's done alright, for better or worse, my folks installed that mentality of hobbies aren't acceptable if they're not profitable. (it's not quite as bad as it sounds but things are easier to write off buying when you flip a finished product for money.) And also ended up as a byproduct of this hobby, becoming a Hot Wheels collector/broker.
Anyway, old man rambling now. Might skip cake and stuff, had a bunch of sweets early, and friends took me out for BBQ and mead Saturday. (It was easier for everyone to get together then so it was early BD celebration.) And I'm a sucker for EC style BBQ and mead.

Good article about the current US situation.

Won't say much here, just I agree to a point. I don't think we've got to the worst of it yet. I think we're teetering on 1930s Germany and just about to fall into goose stepping if Trump keeps power. Especially past the midterms.

I don't talk about this much...

Don't know what's worse, seeing my Carolina Panthers struggle these past few years, or seeing the Hurricanes kick ass right up until the finals.... I need a beer....

Power is back.
Posted a year agoPower came back on yesterday afternoon, and the roads have been cleared of all the fallen trees, but there's still a lot of destruction here, and it's far worse in the mountains. Places I used to go to all the time in college are just... gone. And Asheville where I spent so much time with my dad at the VA is completely cut off in every way except by air. I have no idea how Cullowhee is doing either.
Well this is craptastic.
Posted a year agoHurricane knocked out the power this morning and it's not likely to be on till Monday because so many trees are down.

Posted 2 years agoYesterday my cousin dies, still dont know the cause and today my dog Rascal died beside my mom in the living room. But he was very old for a german shepherd.
My dad passed away
Posted 2 years agoHe lost his battle with heart and kidney failure today. He was 74 years old. Served in the Coast Guard, commanded a Civil Air Patrol squadron, was the shop manager for 600 Racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway, helping create the Legends car and Bandaleros programs. And was a reverse engineer at Steele Rubber until he retired years ago.
I'm really going to miss him.
I'm really going to miss him.
My Father is in the hospital again
Posted 2 years agoActually he's been there since Oct 30th. And I've been in the hospital at his side using my phone and occasionally my chromebook to pass the time.
He went in for a heart cather that was supposed to check his heart, and see if he was a candidate for an LVAD heart pump. Turned out his kidneys AND heart, even with the pacemaker and defibrillator... are out of whack. So they held him in the hospital trying various medicine drips to save his heart, all while he's getting weaker, nauseous, and some bowel distress. And he's been in CICU for several days now.
Got so bad that they instead of releasing him, they did ANOTHER cather surgery, and put in an impella pump. Making it clear he's not leaving the hospital until somehow his heart can grow enough and be healthy enough to survive the surgery. AND his kidneys are failing again, so he's staying... and they won't do the surgery until his kidney numbers improve.
Meanwhile. First week up here, I never left his side but, I've came down with a BAD flu. So I had to go home, but since my brother refuses to take my place till I'm recovered, I've had to take my blind mother up here, to be by my dad's side, while I do all the necessary running around. While still sick. Keep in mind, the hospital is a two hour drive from my house.
So yeah, that's why I haven't been around. My dad is either going to pull up to a state they can put the LVAD in... or... he's in the hospital for the rest of his life. And as his sole caretaker I have to be close by. Sick or not.

And Home
Posted 2 years agoSo my dad is back home. Last day in the hospital had to be full of drama though as he was released from the VA to go to a clinic to have the program on his pacemaker tweaked a bit. (I don't know all the details, just it makes the heart beat a little faster and more even than it was.) Problem is the clinic doctor refused to do it. My dad called the VA, and the supervisoring doctor said come back and she'd do it. We drive BACK to the VA and the cardiologist department won't see my dad without an appointment. And say they won't overturn the clinic doctor's decision. We're about to leave, and valet pulls up with the car... and the supervisor calls my dad, hears what happens and tells him to come back in, and she'll do it personally.
So... yeah... fun. Fluid is off his chest, only 2-3 grams of sodium, has to keep his weight between 179-low 180s. And he's getting some new monitoring equipment that uses the wi-fi to send his medical stuff directly to the VA every day.
But the big thing is, we're home.

Further Update and Art Raffle Boost.
Posted 2 years agoSo, my dad's still in the hospital. And will be for a couple more days. Got home today to pay bills and get some things for a longer stay up at the VA Hospital. There's thankfully no fluid IN his lungs, but there's around 12 pounds of fluid AROUND his lungs and heart. And they aren't letting him go home till the fluid is gone. They got him on a CPAP for sleeping and that did wonders for him this morning. But he's still getting so fatigued at the littlest effort.
That said, and on happier topics,
sc_916 is having a kinktober raffle here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/53517752/
So please go check em' out and maybe get awesome free art, from a great artist.

So update
Posted 2 years agoToday has been kinda challenging. I drive a few hours to take my dad to his VA appointment. But instead of his routine tests, we were heading home and he got short of breath bad, so I returned to the VA and now they are holding him overnight and I'm camping in a chair.
Hopefully everything will be alright. He's got some fluid build up but his new pacemaker he got a month ago is doing its job and his heart is doing okay gor once. But he's been having these breathing problems since the surgery. But doctors didn't find anything that should be causing breathing issues.

The truth on US inflation
Posted 3 years agoAssassination attempt on Nancy Pelosi's husband.
Posted 3 years agohttps://www.msn.com/en-us/news/poli.....45fab0eb9d456c
Right Wing extremist breaks into the house of Nancy and Paul Pelosi and tries to bludgeon Paul Pelosi to death with a hammer, while also after the speaker of the house.
The guy has a known history of supporting antisemitic and neo-Nazi right-wing ideologies like all other Trumpites.
This was a targeted attempt at political assassination by the far-right, spurred on by Trump and his cronies, and their conspiracy theories and spurred on by Jan 6th getting breezed over with none of the far-right leaders facing punishment. And yet you have the right wingers already out and about defending the guy and wishing he'd gotten to Nancy Pelosi instead.

Resident Evil Netflix
Posted 3 years agoSo after watching this I'm a bit... whelmed I guess? I wasn't overwhelmed cause it's not that good, and in fact had stretches of dire boredom where I caught myself staring at my phone. Buuuuut.... it didn't suck either. Umbrella going from 90s Military bioweapon cheesy action of the games to a more modern 'cure depression, anxiety, and social ills... with viral mind control...' ehhh yeah that's topical and sinister as hell. Especially since mental illness is a lot more of a real thing than the need to make your enemies into zombies to eat your other enemies.
The visuals are pretty good one minute, but the finale as much as it's everything I love* makes Asylum/Saturday Syfy movies look cutting edge.
But my major complaint is I really don't like iirc the term 'non-sequential' story telling. I really don't like being jerked from what's going on in the past, and what's going on in the 'present'. Especially when the 'present' stuff is much more interesting than teen drama.
It also suffers from 'smart person' making 'dumb decisions' at 'the worst possible freakin' time' *
Wesker is kinda interesting but man they could have done so much more. *
All in all it's the perfect example of a 6/10 kind of grade. But I would be interested in seeing a 2nd season just to see if the teases pay off.
Spoilers below read at your own risk*
(cheesy giant monsters woot! But yeah, under water the giant crocodile looks super sweet, as does the giant caterpillar, but on land the croc is terrible. The spider is terrible, the lickers LOOK like they came out of the PS2 games cutscenes.)
And seriously you develop what is essentially zombie repellant, and zombie attract gas, but can't WAIT to test it, your fellow PREGNANT scientist is willing to help you test it in a safe location, but no... got to go out and steal a zombie and put it on an enclosed ship and whoops... your fellow scientist is zombie chow, good job. Also, you didn't think to check the head for a tracker. How did you miss it when experimenting on it? And to a lesser grumble, why is every tie down strap in movies so dry rotted a toddler could snap it? Those straps could hold several hundred pounds, they aren't ripping because of one grumpy dead person.
Albert Wesker being one we're kinda familiar with in the games, to having 3 'goodish but very flawed' clones, with one clone being the main two characters... children/medicine was weird but kinda interesting. The super Wesker we all know though only shows up for like a couple minutes, and then bampfs off. I thought Billie would kind of be a surrogate Super Wesker, especially when the croc showed up, but no... just a tech geek with the T virus.... so far.
Oh, and while we're on the subject of spoilers, nice job with the time skipping outright telling the viewer that EVERYONE in the past the main characters know and helps them DIES horribly. So, I'm not holding out much hope for Ada Wong if there is a 2nd season.
The Tyrant's cameo is also a bit lame.
Joy is a pretty damn creepy drug in its premise. Especially 'Joy for Kids' and how growing up it seemed like everyone wanted to pump their kids full of Ritalin if they showed the least little bit of excitement and energy.
