Farewell FurAffinity

It's time to part ways. FA has been a great resource for the furry community during the early days but it has since outlived its usefulness. My activity here is way down and moved onto other platforms for reasons other than the recent security breach. Might as well make it official though.

Texas Furry Fiesta bound bird!
General | Posted 11 years agoI'll be attending TFF later this week. It'll be my first time. I know there are a few of you that don't attend any of the west coast conventions and I hope to run into you while there.
If you'd like to do that, be sure to give me a shout out in the comments below. There may be a big group going off to get AUTHENTIC TEXAS BBQ Friday night. Very much excited about that.

Sure. If I'm free I'm happy to talk about advice on breaking into the video game industry. Note that offering drinks tends to make birdie happy.

Hugs, yes. Touching...depends if I know you.

Yes! But note that I may strictly limit my alcohol intake while suiting or suiting later.

I can pay for my own food and if plans allow it, possibly grab a meal (lunch/dinner) together.

Life's getting complicated
General | Posted 11 years agoThings in my life have gotten complicated with enough layers that I am no longer able keep track of everything.
The thought of that frightens me. But it's also somewhat freeing, as I am less able to be paralyzed from over analysis.
In the meanwhile, I can't help shake the feeling that I'm flying blind. Just hope I don't fly into a tree or cliff. :-/

Rainfurrest bound Business Bird!
General | Posted 11 years agoBoth me and "http://twitter.com/CorvinBirdy" will be attending Rainfurrest from Thursday afternoon through next Wednesday. Feel free to say hi and give hugs. If you want to meet up and hang out, you best get in touch with me on here, Twitter, or Facebook ahead of time cause I won't be able to check my messages while in-suit.
I'll be attending the ice cream social and GoH dinner (yay for on-site dinning to maximize con time!).
Chickened out (and work was too busy) to make an attempt to go for the dance comp. But I still hope to shoot a music video.
Hope to see more of Seattle after the con and hanging out with
theparrotenthusiast and maybe Kawaburd.

General | Posted 11 years agoToday is "https://twitter.com/corvinbirdy"' 1st birthday!
What a wild year it's been. All my fears and doubts about getting a fursuit vanished (held off on getting one for 5+ years) as I tested my theories and ideas and found them to be quite good. In a short 12 months I've gone from:
-Never wanting to wear contacts because eeew, touching eyeball isn't normal to done. Because I couldn't interact effectively if I can't see cues like people flagging me down/pointing a camera at me.
-Swallowed my fears and fursuiting at my company during Halloween. The world didn't end when my co-workers saw a giant blue jay sitting at my desk. :-D
-Danced and learned my fears about looking like a dork was not entirely correct; I didn't suck as badly as I had feared for all these years.
-Went to more conventions in a year than in recent memory.
==Rainfurrest
==Furconsin
==Further Confusion
==Biggest Little FurCon
==Elliot's Spring Gathering
==Califur
-Fursuiting in places I never imagined possible like in front of the Las Vegas sign.
-Fursuiting in places I never imagined possible part 2 at E3.
-Fursuiting gave me the confidence to dip a toe to visit San Diego and wound up making a number of really good friends I still keep in touch with after all this time.
-Never going for more than 3 weeks tops without fursuiting for the past 12 months. O__O!
Sokitwopaw did really great work and I'm grateful that they built solidly and it didn't look half bad. Can't thank him enough and myself for running into the happenstance that led to me commissioning them for the fursuit. If I had been distracted for ~35 more minutes these past 12 months would have been far less interesting. To them I say, good luck in everything that they do. And to me, thanks for tolerating this crazy birdie flailing around and hope you look forward to more.
In summary, the last 12 months with the fursuit have been one of the best things to happen to me in a while.
Here's to the next 12 months!
P.S. - I'm looking into the next one as fursuits unfortunately have a finite lifespan. It starts. Can't have just one suit, can you?

Fursuiting at E3: Day 1
General | Posted 11 years ago==E3 Report: Day 1==
E3 is a beacon of American high-tech creative culture, thrown in the middle of two major landmarks (LA Convention Center and Staples Center)...and lots of people. So there was LOTS of security. There’s security that’s with E3, LA Convention Center's in-house security, a third-party security group they hired for the occasion, and LAPD in squad cars, motorcycles, and bicycles patrolling the surrounding streets constantly.
It's kind of sad, due to the realities of post Boston and other recent mass-violence events.
Thankfully, one of the security guards remembered me from WonderCon and got the other security peeps to back down when they started freaking out at me; full face mask and all that.
A few other attendees also recognized me from WonderCon which I found surprising. Cause I only suited for ~90-110 minutes near the end of the last day at a convention FULL of cosplayers and a few other fursuiters but they still managed to remember me. I took that as a compliment of sorts.
I had a couple of ‘hail Hydra’ moments meeting and talking with dormant furries attending the convention. We had nice chats and I made some furry contacts. ^_^
I terrorized the selfie booth, photo bombing people using it several times.
I got some laughs when I mimed the head guy at Nintendo announcing the winners of the first Smash Brothers tournament on the Wii U on the big screen TV.
Overall, I suited for about 2 hours after romping around the streets and surrounding areas and had a great deal of fun interacting with the public.

Califur 2014 Postmortem
General | Posted 11 years agoThis is going to be a rough timeline of my experience at Califur 2014.
Day 1, Friday May 30
Registration on Friday was as terrible as I always remembered it. Spent ~1.5-2 hours in the pre-registered line before getting my badge. Did a tour of the Dealer's Den and stopped by the auction area to drop off an item I donated for the charity auction. After that I went to the Con Store to wait in another line to pick up my tickets for the Ice Cream Social and Guest of Honor dinner.
Charity Pet Auction
Ran into
dancingduke which was awesome cause he's been a big influence that led to my interest in fursuit dancing. Signed up for the pet auction and I happened to be at the right place at the right time and snagged a spot (there was way more than 20). On my way out noticed
lockford waiting and surmised that he won't get in since there were only 20 slots. So I added him to my slot. It would have been a dick move to walk off and keep the slot to myself. >__>
The fursuit auction went well, but it probably could have used a little more communication on what the we were getting ourselves into.
brexton won me and Lockford, thank you for bidding on me; it was my first time! Raising money for charity was a worthy cause and I was happy to do my part to help. The ice cream social was nice and I had a great deal of fun hanging out with them for the rest of the night.
Afterwards, suited up and headed down to the dance. The DJ's music was so-so but I did get to go up on the stage and dance dance dance.
Day 2, Saturday May 31
Game Industry 102 panel: Getting your foot in the door
Crack of dawn Saturday morning 10am was my Game Industry 102 panel. They gave us a slightly larger room but I think the combination of early hours and far corner of the convention space damped attendance a little. Still, there was a healthy sized crowd. Had 2 other guest panelists,
kazulgfox
bahumot. It went really well, and everyone got a roughly equal amount of time and birdie helped facilitate the discussions by asking questions to let the panelists shine. Gave out a bunch of business cards at the end and it's off to lunch!
YAY! Finally got to hang out with
kazulgfox and
frosteefox for lunch which has been on my wishlist for quite some time but our schedules for some reason didn't cross paths until now.
After lunch I suited up for the parade and had a blast! Got a good spot in the parade and had a good time. The parade route itself ended somewhat abruptly. We made a turn before the lobby outside and everyone was surprised that was it. I walked around to the lobby and mingled with peeps for a while until it was time for the Guest of Honor dinner.
Guest of Honor Dinner
The Guest of Honor dinner was terrible. The steak was SO TOUGH, I could have used them to repair the bottoms of my fursuit feet. Ugh, I might reconsider signing up for that again next year.
Messing with KROQ people
After dinner, I was too shy for the Cabaret and had lots of free time. Wound up suiting a whole ton in the lobby to have fun with the KROQ people started trickling in. Got a bunch of pictures taken by some of the celebs and concert attendees. As the night wore on and they got drunker one lady by the bar area tried to pry my beak open which made me take defensive measures. Thankfully, my beak was undamaged but it did shake me up a bit. I would have taken that as a sign to retire for the night but wound up patrolling the lobby for several more hours until the whee hours when I learned about what happened to Raket. 2 things went through my head. 1) That was a terrible thing to happen to such a great fursuiter. 2) Oh crap, what's going to happen for the dance competition tomorrow without him?
Wound up suiting for 8+ hours that day and thank goodness for my EZ Cooldown cooling vest which I refroze at least 3 times.
Day 3, Sunday June 1
My mind was preoccupied with packing and getting ready for checkout at 1pm, which sapped most of the fun out of it. IWas sad bird at missing my chance to say bye to Kazul and Frostee, missed their tweet about wanting to say bye while dragging stuff to my car and by the time I got back it was too late. Saw a whole lot of people leave and it was bumming me out so much to the point where I wondered if there was any point in sticking around. But, I had a promise to keep and wound up moving my car into the covered parking lot so my fursuit wouldn't cook after I had checked out and hung out in the lobby waiting for the dance competition.
Dance Competition Judging
The dance competition judging was Corvin's first major event and I was very nervous. Intellectually, that struck me as odd because I don't recall being that nervous when I had to speak in front of thousands of people live with another 60,000+ online watching me on PPV. So I was trying to hold it together the entire time whenever it was my turn to speak while judging the dance competition. Part of the problem is my inability to hear ANYTHING being spoken over the mic. The foam in the head muffles everything over the mic to be unintelligible and I was deathly worried about accidentally repeating the feedback that the other judges said (cause I can't hear them) or flubbing it in front of the other judges which I hold in high esteem (no pressure!).
After the event was over I was relieved that it went really well and is a qualified success IMO. It was extremely well attended and I hope Califur staff will consider giving the event more room and bumping it up to a Saturday afternoon timeslot next time. I said many many many goodbyes which made me a sad birdie and consoled myself by treating myself to sushi buffet after I de-suited and wrapped things up.
>__>The fursuit auction went well, but it probably could have used a little more communication on what the we were getting ourselves into.
brexton won me and Lockford, thank you for bidding on me; it was my first time!
Gave out a bunch of business cards at the end and it's off to lunch!YAY!
Going to Elliott's Spring Gathering 2014 and beyond
General | Posted 11 years agoHi!
Elliott's Spring Gathering 2014
Business bird is now Vegas bound for Elliott's Spring Gathering and I'll be driving (don't trust the TSA with my fursuit). I look forward to the parties and that limo tour in hopes of getting a few classy photos for "https://twitter.com/corvinbirdy" out of the deal.
You know the drill, if you're also attending and want to meet up there do let me know!
Fursuiting at E3???
Beyond that I'm looking to try to get a pole mount for my camera so I can do self-video while in fursuit. I am toying with the idea of suiting to E3 which will be a first as far as YouTube search goes and it could be cool. If any furries here is attending E3 and is willing to help me shoot 1-2 hours of footage as a collaborative project I'll find some way to make it up to you.

Fun fact: I use the same conditioner as my fursuit.
General | Posted 12 years agoFun fact: I use the same conditioner as my fursuit, Corvin. Sure, it helps me feel closer to him but in truth I accidentally overstocked, bought 4 bottles of the conditioner and have enough to more or less last through Corvin's lifecycle.
FC 2014 Post-Mortem (Part 1)
General | Posted 12 years agoFC 2014 Post-Mortem (Part 1)
Quick background: At Corvin’s first convention thought I didn’t need glasses cause I can resolve humanoid shapes and avoid walls just fine. Well, congrats to me. Corvin walked around Rainfurrest like a self driving Google car and did not run into anyone or anything. But, I thought I did very poorly as well because I wasn’t able to recognize people gesturing for photos or friends even a few feet away from me(ignored them).
Based on that experience, I went out and got contacts and boy is it great to be able to see again! Still miss having peripheral vision while in suit but I can now engage with people and do stuff.
Day 1:
Not much going on, carpooled with
lostwolf123 and
Lockford. Tried to check in a day early and learned that the Marriott was unable to give me my reservation a day early; sold out on a Wednesday night. On top of that, only people making reservations through the (borked) FC website had priority for double beds.
Asking what I was supposed to do with 4 people and 1 king bed, the front desk clerk politely offered me the privilege of getting a cot for only +$25/night. Spoke with two of the front desk clerks, gave them an earful and eventually they ‘generously’ offered me a double room for $309 for Wednesday night. Uh, no thanks.
Thankfully, Lostwolf allowed me to crash in their room for the night and saved me a ton of grief from trying to sleep in the lobby with my luggage in tow.
Lockford and I got the honor of being one of the first fursuiters ! Strangely enough, as the night went on, the hotel lobby was the quietest I can remember since I started in 2009, which was troubling.
Day 2:
Finally got my hotel room! After having another talk with the same front desk clerk they gave me a double bed. My original request was low floor near and elevator but at this point I wasn’t being picky as long as I got a double when those are sold out and then some!
Suited some more and actually picked up my patron badge in suit. Working the line was a lot of fun plus they were a captive audience. I hope they enjoyed the distraction other than staring at the mega slow registration line. Not going to get into that as other people have choicer words to say about FC’s registration (again) this year.
My roommates
arc_collie and their friend arrived(don’t know their FA) later that evening and I went out to the Thursday night dance and got to dance lots. ^__^
The hotel lobby on Thursday night was strangely quiet/muted again, strange but thankfully the rest of the convention was quite lively.
FC: Fancy Friday Patron Snafu (aka: How to make your patrons feel bad.)
Went to the dealer’s den to pick up the patron gifts from the con store. No one on staff bothered to tell me that patrons were supposed to get tickets to the Fancy Friday event for free (a $10 value). Only found out by going back to my hotel room and discovered it while reading the con book.
By the time I went back to ask about my free ticket for patrons the con store guy said they’re out and that it was too bad I didn’t ask for my free ticket. Uh, what? The tickets were supposed to be free for patrons. Making your patrons feel like they’ve been caught by a GATCHA! because they didn’t read the fine print to demand free tickets when there were still extra tickets available isn’t endearing me to consider ever being a patron again. This was the second time that I had been mistreated (registration snafu as a patron from 3 years ago). You can be sure I’ll be squawking from the mountaintops to discourage others from becoming a patron or sponsor at FC.
Fast forward to the Sunday patron luncheon (Highly recommended by the way. As bad as the Fancy Friday debacle was, the luncheon almost made up for it and was a highlight for me every time I was a patron.) I was explaining to several people that appeared to be FC staff/volunteers that they need to work on their communications.
You don’t need to give people any more goodies but for the love of god, tell people if they’re supposed to be getting something nice. Withholding stuff to patrons that didn’t ask only to go “haha, you don’t get it because you didn’t ask and we didn’t bother telling you!” is the wrong way to reward people for going above-and-beyond to support what is supposed to be a grand celebration of the furry fandom.
P.S - Heard that the Fancy Friday event was a bit of a mess so I didn't miss much. But still, Corvin has a tie and damnit, it would have been perfect for him to attend.
Typing up Part 2 tomorrow.

[ Are you a fursuiter? ]
Yes. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11767550/
[ Attending Parties? ]
If I know you please feel free to invite birdie. ^__^ I prefer hanging out with people I know and sharing a drink or two over standing room only on the party floor with complete strangers.
[ Do you drink? ]
Birdie drinks. But only a little unless I don't plan on suiting for the rest of the night.
[ Can I buy you a drink? ]
Sure. I'd be happy to chat with over a drink.
[ Are you attending any panels? ]
Yes, especially if there's any gaming industry related ones.
[ Stage or Public Performance? ]
Haven't found anyone to collaborate with for stage performance. Technically, suiting IS public performance so that one's covered.

Ping me via notes on here, Twitter, or Facebook if you want to meet up. Otherwise, I'm going to wander around the convention and let things happen organically.
[ How do I identify myself to you? ]
Standard social protocol. "Hello, my name is <YOUR_NAME_HERE>."
[ Rules of engagement (physical contact)? ]
In person: Hugs are fine.
In suit: Let me know verbally before hugging. Visibility is poor. Leave the fursuit head alone. I get irate when I think someone's trying to damage the fursuit head.
[ Can I talk to you? ]
Sure.
[ Can I give you lots of money? ]
Has this actually happened to anyone, honestly?
[ Can I hug or snuggle with you? ]
If you have to ask this, I probably don't know you well enough.
[ How do I know if you're not looking to socialize (angry, busy or upset)? ]
Birdie will let you know he's busy if I've made prior plans with another group of people.
[ Personality Type? ]
Introverted. But, this birdie has been known to have a silver beak and a way with words.
