TRON jacket Instructions
Posted 13 years ago************UPDATE**************
Using a single 9V battery so far has yielded NO more explosions
Looks like that is the solution
*************EDIT***************
So my el wire jacket almost set me on fire
One of the batteries exploded in my pocket.
Lesson here is DONT overload your drivers/batteries. I would say no less than 8 AA batteries per 24 SQUARE inches of el wire.
Otherwise, just contain them in a plastic case.
The batteries didnt get hot - one just exploded
Be Safe!!
EL tape for the win!!
To get a general Idea of the parts required, see this ebay post:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/9-Feet-Blue.....item3f12bf3e59
First, some background (you dont really have to know electrical engineering to do this; the following is important, but not really relevant to using it).
First, EL wire or Electroluminescent Wire can be found in various places on the internet. EL wire is copper wire with a phosphor coating that glows when high frequency (~1KHz) AC current is applied. EL Tape, as I used, is flat and wide and very thin, but works on the same principal.
NOTE:
Luckily, although it is high voltage AC (~200V; 30V you can feel) the current is relatively low (we're using AA batteries here) so the shock is not bad. Ive been shocked several times before. However, I was using 2 AA which is not enough to power the front and back at the same time. If you go up to 8 AA's the shock will be more, and I am not sure how that feels. I would suggest as a matter of personal peace of mind that you use 2 separate sets of 2 AA batteries to power the thing.
So since im an engineer, I tried to do my custom thing first and FAILED HORRIBLY. EL tape is terrible at doing cut and combine parts from standard lengths. My suggestion therefore is two fold:
1) get all your tron parts from:
elwirecraft on ebay
see here : http://myworld.ebay.com/elwirecraft.....id=p4340.l2559
They are very, very good (although slightly expensive) and he/she will do custom work! All the connectors and cutting are done for you, its just plug and play at that point. See tron work here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sam-Flynn-T.....item6b1e106d54
If that is too expensive, he/she has smaller sets. If that is too expensive, you CAN get strips of EL tape from elsewhere. However, do not try to splice them together. I tried and its terrible. Get one piece of tape with a connector, cut it to length and thats it - you cant try to add connectors to the length you cut off. It just does not go well, I tried.
2) Add to a jacket:
Elwirecraft sends sticky Velcro with the order. Use this for the back of the tape and then either sew on regular velcro to you jacket or use stick velcro on the jacket if you plan not to wash it much. Personally, I got Extra large eyelets (see here: http://www.joann.com/dritz-xtra-lar.....0-pk/prd34415/) to put holes in the jacket and feed the wires underneath to hide them. Makes it slightly difficult to put on, but not too hard.
And its done simple(?) as that!
Ask me if you have any questions!!

Commission Info
Posted 15 years agoYES ! I do Commissions, here are the rules:
1) I dont do adult art for people I know to be less than 18 years of age. That simply keeps me out of trouble. Sorry.
2) I dont do anything really violent.
3) The cost is FREE. That said, it may take a while for me to get to it.
4) I do free commissions since I dont have a very active imagination as far as WHAT to draw. If you could make stick figures showing me what you want that would help A LOT.
