Today sucks
Posted 14 years agoNormally I don't make journals about all the depressing stuff in my life, because that's not what I do. But I think today is a very special occasion.
5AM: I woke up because I had a lot of air trapped in my stomach, so I was nauseas for about an hour and a half, I spent a while forcing myself to burp so I can release the air. Not fun.
12PM: Just got the news that my brother has been arrested for Fraud. The story goes that my brother was working at a phone shop in South Africa, and the owner one day left the shop. Only to return a few months later with some armed men and forced my bro(named Jonathan) to make an illegal transaction otherwise they'll kill his ex and her family in front of him then execute him. So now the P.I on the case thinks that Jono is guilty, and the minimum bail is R10,000(R=Rand).
So yeah, this day fucking sucks.

6 new games for £24.98
Posted 14 years agoI now have Darksiders(on special for £5.00), The Oddboxx(Abe's Odyssee, Abe's Exodus, Munch's Odyssee and Stranger's Wrath on special for £9.99) and S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl(not on special but it was £9.99).
6 games for £24.98 is a bargain.

I have reached a new degree of nerdery
Posted 14 years agoI got a World of Warcraft account. It's a free trial I've yet to get Cataclysm and The Burning Crusade but all in due time. So far I'm liking it, which is ironic because I used to think this game was terrible because I had to pay to play it. It's only £9.99 though so it's not so bad.
Dragon Age 2 Demo
Posted 14 years agoOkay, I've just finished the Dragon Age 2 Demo released on Steam, and I am very impressed. Very VERY impressed.
The story is told by a dwarf who knows the main character being interrogated by the Chantry, he tells the story of Garrett Hawke(the main character), leaving his home in Lothering and going to Kirkwall, and that's all that's revealed. Most of the content is locked for the demo, such as character customisation and the inventory, so you can focus on the pure joy of combat and dialogue choices.
Gameplay:
The game is just like the first, it has the same Tactic System as the first and the same mechanics. But the combat is much faster paced than the first, you also have "Quick Heal" and "Quick Restore" which is a great addition because now you don't have to open your inventory and fumble for a Poultice or a Potion. The controls are smoother and easier to get used to. The dialogue has also been drastically improved as your responses are marked with a certain symbol, telling you what kind of remark it is, is it a harsh remark or is it a civilised and friendly remark? Also, Hawke has a voice, in the first Dragon Age your character never spoke outside of randomly speaking during combat. The dialogue is very similar to Mass Effect.
Graphics:
The graphics have been drastically improved, the environments look even better than the first game, and the characters look a lot better. This game has Direct X11 support which can only mean it looks absolutely mind blowing. I can only run it on medium and it looks like Dragon Age: Origins maxed out.
As for everything else, well, we'll have to wait and see.
Positives:
More interesting characters
Interesting story
Faster paced gameplay
Improved dialogue
Improved combat
Negatives:
Too demanding
Tactic system is a little buggy and unresponsive.
Overall: This game looks like it could dominate the first Dragon Age and win Game Of The Year, hands down. But I'll wait for the release before I make any final decisions, but as it stands this is a brilliant demo.
Score: 9/10
Let see if that score can go up to 10.

Half Life 2 review
Posted 15 years agoA little late but I finished the game not too long ago. Late start.
I started playing Half Life a long time ago with the first game, I didn't play any of the add-ons though, and I enjoyed it and I couldn't get Half Life 2 because my old PC couldn't run Half Life 1 properly. So a friend of mine sent me the game and the Lost Coast tech demo.
It starts with the Grey Man from the first game saying a few confusing things before you gain control of silent protagonist, Gordon Freeman. Arriving by train to City 17 which is run by his old administrator from Black Mesa, Dr. Breen. Although he gets taken away from the checkpoint by his old friend Barney who is disguised as a city guard(or Civil Protection) and he tells Gordon to find his way to another one of Gordon's old friends, Dr. Kleiner. It goes well until Gordon gets caught in middle of a Civil Protection raid on a nearby apartment building which results in a chase. He is later saved by Alyx who leads him to Dr. Kleiner's lab, I will end it there so there are no more spoilers, don't worry nothing really special happens in the part I just spoke about, all the action comes shortly. The story is pretty good, and I'll bet sometimes Gordon is like "Why the hell did I do this?" There are a lot of puzzles just like in the first game and you need to have good eyesight to figure some of them out.
Gameplay:
As you know, Half Life 2 is a first person shooter, so in the beginning there isn't really much difference between the gameplay from the first game to this one, but if you enjoyed the first game, you'll love this one. There are also a few puzzles scattered around and those are definitely gonna keep you busy, in the first game you had aliens, well in the beginning you just fight Civil Protection the aliens and The Combine come later.
Graphics:
The graphics in this game are excellent, all the areas are well designed and very detailed. This game has had a few updates so now it looks better than it used to. I can run this game maxed out even with the Anti Aliasing and the Anisotropic Filtering at maximum. But my favourite feature is the motion blur, I LOVE MOTION BLUR!
Sound:
The sound...OH MY GOD! The sound in this game is amazing, I have cheap stereo headphones and it still sounds great, I'll bet it will sound better with full 7.1 Surround Sound. The environmental sounds are very realistic almost like you're there. They really worked hard on the sound on this game.
Controls:
For me, they're perfect. They respond well and the mouse sensitivity is perfect, smooth and responsive, I hate having an over sensitive mouse. I like it to be smooth and lightweight.
Overall: A fantastic sequel to a fantastic game. Great sound, great story, great gameplay and perfect controls. My #1 favourite game of all time.
Pros:
Great story
Excellent sound
Gravity gun!
Awesome graphics
Perfect controls
Cons:
Gordon needs a voice.
Score: 9.8/10

Dragon Age: Origins review revisited
Posted 15 years agoRemember my first Dragon Age review where I gave the game a dreadful score of 45% or 4.5? I complained about the bad Tactic system and AI? Well I see why I had that problem now. The problem was...Me, like an idiot I tried to bumrush my way through this game. So that was my problem, I was a retard. Now that I've gone back to the game and studied it a little more and adjusted to the playstyle this game is very good, possibly one of the best RPGs I have ever played in my life. But my opinion still stands on the characters, story and everything else.
So the score goes from 4.5/10 to a whopping 8.9/10.
Final thought: I wouldn't recommend this game to people new to RPGs or trying to get into RPGs as this game isn't exactly easy, the Tactic System is rather complex and takes a lot of getting used to, any newcomer will be baffled by this game.

Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days review
Posted 15 years agoI've never played the first Kane and Lynch game, so I didn't know what to expect, although even though this is considered the worst game in the series, I liked it for what it was worth.
This game takes place in Shanghai, you are greeted by our heroes Adam "Kane" Marcus and Seth James Lynch being tortured by a Chinese gang, it then cuts to 2 days prior to the event, Lynch is going out to fetch Kane but before they could go home Lynch has some "business" to do with some random guy, unfortunately this results in a gunfight and the man they were chasing and the girl the man was with were killed. They are in Shanghai for an arms deal but the whole deal goes pear shaped when an ex-government Chinese ganglord hunts down Kane and Lynch because the girl that was killed was his daughter, now Kane and Lynch have to fight to survive and to leave the country. This story is pretty damn good if I must say, the characters are very interesting and unforgettable and the voice acting is very good.
Onto the gameplay, this is a snap to cover third person shooter, like Gears of War or Army of Two, there is online co-op where player 1 plays as Lynch and player 2 is Kane, and there is even multiplayer and arcade(multiplayer with AI), you have to flank, suppress and stay out of the line of sight, pretty basic, but the game itself is pretty hard, you won't get a perfect round in this game, it's all trial and error so you can find a better place to find cover.
Graphics, the graphics are nothing spectacular. In fact the detail was lowered to make it look like an independent film, it has a buffering effect added, you know when you first upload a video and it's still processing? It feels like it's being filmed by an independent film crew with cheap cameras, the camera even shakes when you move and it shakes even more when you sprint. If you don't like this feature you can always turn on "Steadycam". I can play this game maxed out and my PC isn't very powerful at all.
The sound in this game is great, from cars, to guns, to voices, it sounds great and it must sound even better with surround sound. There isn't much music in this game, save the main menu, end credits and background radio music.
Now onto the controls, the controls in this game are pretty good, they're smooth, they're responsive and they work just fine, you can remap them if you wish or you can use a game controller if you prefer that over keyboard and mouse. But I would suggest turning your aim sensitivity up to 60.
Overall, this game is really good, but there are a lot of flaws to this game unfortunately.
1: This game feels very rushed, some scenes just end too quickly and make no sense and the game ending too abruptly. Although I'd rather it do that than have a cutscene that lasts forever and is completely unskippable.
2: The loading times in this game are TERRIBLE. It takes FOREVER to load a level, I actually have to minimize the game and restore it to get past the loading screen, they're that bad. Square Enix should fix this instead of farting around with Final Fantasy XIV Online, NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR STUPID MMO! STOP FUCKING AROUND AND MAKE DEUS EX 3! Sorry about the rant there.
3: The blurriness of the buffering effect makes it very hard to see sometimes, so that can lead to a problem.
Finally: This game is very linear and short, it doesn't take long to finish this game, which kinda sucks imo.
Final thought: a good game that was ruined by the incompetence of the developers and publishers.
Score: 6.8/10

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Posted 15 years agoThis game is the shit! It rocked my socks off, my friend bought it for me today and I fuckin' love it! Better than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 where I constantly got accused of hacking an' all that other bullshit. This game is balanced, fun and pretty easy to get used to.
Alone In The Dark review
Posted 15 years agoAfter a while I managed to finish this game, I saw it a few times on Youtube and I saw the tech demos a while back, this is the 2008 installment of the Alone In The Dark series, and I must say, it doesn't deserve the low reviews it got.
It starts with Edward Carnby waking up on a bed with some sort of amnesia and he has to get out of the building while the whole city is collapsing around him, the intro to this game couldn't be any more epic. I won't reveal anything else though, the story is pretty solid and it makes sense, it may be a B-movie plot but it's better than those piles of crap Uwe Boll shat out when he made the movies. The voice acting is kinda poor, the characters showing very little to no emotion, the writing in this game is full of profanity however the cursing dies down a little as you progress, so all the swearing is in the beginning of the game, but enough with the story and the acting seeing as that doesn't make or break a game.
Now let's move onto gameplay, the gameplay both makes and breaks this game unfortunately. While the item system is innovative and something new, the game relies on the real-time inventory a little too much, drowning it out a little and making the combat very lethargic. The controls are VERY stiff, the turning controls are completely wrong and take a lot of getting used to, better use a keyboard for movement and an analogue stick for handling objects, funnily enough though the controls seem to smooth out when running. The mouse in third person mode can only be used to handle objects in your hands, moving the mouse in a circular motion will make Edward move the object around him, very useful when manipulating a burning object(I'll get to that later). It's a lot easier to move in first person as you have smoother controls and mouse look, but you can't handle objects in first person. The item combinations are one of the coolest and the most annoying things in this game, here's an example, making a molotov cocktail, take a handkerchief(or bandages), combine it with a plastic bottle(or glass bottle) and equip it with a lighter, simple. But you have to do this quite often in this game to solve puzzles and it gets very repetitive. I will explain all this in full detail in a later video review. Driving in this game becomes a chore rather than a mode of transport as the cars have no weight to them and they are vulnerable to glitches, there are LOTS of glitches when it comes to driving(all shall be saved for the video review).
Now onto graphics, this game looks very nice, especially the fire, the fire generates it's own light and spreads in a non scripted way. Eden used dynamic lighting effects so the lights in this game are very realistic and they look amazing. However this leads to combat, the only way to kill zombies in this game is with fire, and you have to shoot them in the fissures using fire bullets(fuel + gun) or by handling a burning object towards them, this is the ONLY way to kill them, making the combat very cumbersome and repetitive. Other creatures such as bats and bugs can be killed with normal bullets, fire just does a little more damage.
Overall, this is a good game that is let down by the incompetence of Atari. After this game got some really bad reviews Atari threatened the reviewers with a lawsuit claiming they "weren't playing the complete game", yeah Atari, nice to know you're on the same level as Uwe Boll. Then they proceeded to make Alone In The Dark: Inferno for the PS3(which wasn't any better), now Atari, if you really care about this game doing well, get off your fat arses, stop being a bunch of money grabbing assholes, get Eden on the phone and patch your damned game. Seriously, all this game needs is a patch, update the physics, the graphics, the combat, the controls, etc. It's not that hard and maybe some DLC would be nice too. Seriously Atari for being such a giant in the gaming industry, you sure are a bunch of assholes.
Good:
Good story
Great gameplay
Nice graphics
Challenging
Bad:
Glitchy cars
Lethargic item system
Repetitive combat
Short(only 8 chapters).
Score: 8/10

Score: 8/10
Alone In The Dark has finally arrived
Posted 15 years agoAnd so far, it's pretty good. The driving stage was evil but it's passable and challenging. But so far I love it

What makes a game good
Posted 15 years agoGameplay. I've noticed a few people I know put down games because of "lack of story". Who cares about a story, the story just gives you the point of the game, what's going on and what you must do, you get plenty of story in cutscenes and dialogue and then you can get straight into the gameplay. Story doesn't make the game good, here's a perfect example:
How many of you have heard of the game Prototype? If you haven't played it then look up the story, it is just a crappy "genetic experiments go wrong and the military go to clean up the mess." But that's not why people buy this game, they buy it for it's epic gameplay, you can run up walls, pick up cars and throw them at helicopters, absorb the memories of certain people. Doesn't that make a game fun? If you want a good story, pick up a book or a movie, not a game.
I seriously hate games that have too much emphasis on the storyline, more specifically Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, there's too much dialogue and waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much cutscene and for me that drowns out the excitement in the game. And to really piss me off with games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts is the crappy gameplay, you just run around, get attacked, wait your turn and level up, they put too much into the combat system and that makes it unnecessarily complex and frustrating. Most RPGs have a lot of story but sometimes it isn't bad, like Dragon Age, my only complaint about Dragon Age is there's a lot of dialogue and it's really long. The RPGs I like have enough story to keep you interested and most of the time, it's a really good story, more specifically Diablo 2 and Hellgate: London.
On a side note: I've played Final Fantasy VII, the one people say is the best, that was the game that made me hate Final Fantasy, you literally play for 5 minutes and then have to sit through half an hour of cutscene and shitty story. The combat system was even worse, the turn based combat makes the game lethargic and boring and to top it off they randomise attacks so you can't beat your enemy with a good strategy.
I think I would like Final Fantasy if they didn't put too much story in the game, that being said I like the Final Fantasy movies, but the games are just a waste of time, the games feel more like the movies rather than a game.
So there you go, games are not made for story, they're made to be played and you can't play a game without decent gameplay. If the story sucks but the gameplay is fun then it's a good game, if both story and gameplay are good then it's possibly one of the best games you'll play, depending if you like that sort of game.
Story < Gameplay

Why I hate other IMs other than Skype
Posted 15 years agoThey're bloody useless, buggy, broken and all they do is crash. Right, anybody who uses MSN to chat to me, get a Skype account. I'm uninstalling all my IMs other than Skype because they're just plain rubbish.
MSN refuses to sign me in now.
AIM just tries to open IE and just freezes.
Oovoo just refuses to install.
Skype works, if you don't have one, get one.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 review
Posted 15 years agoI've heard a few things about this game, some good and some bad. I actually thought that this game would be an absolute blow, but then I borrowed
's copy via Steam and gave the SP a go. Well it starts the game immediatly when you select SP, so you can't view the options at first, which isn't bad but to some it's annoying. The story is generic as hell:
"Russia hates America and invade, the US Rangers retaliate but are completely useless outside of the US and the British saved the world once again. End."
But then again, who plays a game for it's story? Unless you like RPGs and that's okay(unless it's Final Fantasy which has too much story and bugger all gameplay). This game is action packed, from snowmobile chases to running through a village unarmed and being chased by the local militia to a super badass boat chase. You'll see some new characters, such as Shepard, Ghost, etc, as well as some old characters, Soap Mactavish, Capt. Price, etc, you play as a man named Gary "Roach" Sanderson and his mentor is none other than Capt. Soap Mactavish(who is super badass).
While the single player is pretty cool, the multiplayer is absolute rubbish. It's unbalanced, broken and poorly designed, what was Infinity Ward thinking? No dedicated servers? No anti-cheat software? Are there ANY PC gamers working at Infinity Ward? And let's not forget the sub-par map packs which go for an absurd price of $10.99 per. Why didn't they just make the multiplayer like the one in Call of Duty 4? Because it HAS dedicated servers and anti-cheat software, if they had made the MP like CoD4's then it would be a whole lot better.
Bottom line:
Only if your REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLLLLLLLY want this game, then buy it, but do yourself a favour and wait until Black Ops. Treyarch KNOW what they're doing, Infinity Ward just want the money and refuse to listen to the community.
The good:
Action packed SP
New characters
Soap Mactavish
New weapons
The bad:
Generic story
Rubbish AI
Shitty multiplayer
Expensive DLC's
Score: 65%
PS:
If the price drops for Modern Warfare 2 after Black Ops' release then I might consider buying it, and that goes for the DLC too.

DmC and gamers who take shit waaaay too seriously
Posted 15 years agoI'm excited by the new Devil may Cry coming out, Dante has changed which isn't a bad thing. But I feel a shitstorm coming on as gamers who take their gaming and their fandom way too seriously will soon fuss and fret followed by an unnecessary boycott. I mean, come on...Really? Are people really this fucking stupid? Apparently Devil May Cry is the new Sonic the Hedgehog and Final Fantasy. Next they're gonna throw the "Capcom is now milking the series for money" bullshit around when they were the ones who wanted a new DMC game in the first place, Capcom thought that the series might need a change seeing as it started to get a little stale. New ideas are always good, unless they blow, then bitch and boycott the game.
Games change so that they're fresh and not the same old shit you've played 1000000 times, otherwise they'd probably bitch and moan and compare it to another game that was just as mediocre. Take for instance, BioShock: Infinite, it's not based in Rapture, why? because then it would be boring and predictable so they changed it to a 1800's era Steampunk game. Dead Space 2 is gonna have some changes, such as multiplayer, Isaac's speech, new zero-g, new necromorphs, Isaac's hairstyle changed in 2 for fuck's sake, did anybody care? NO!
Seriously people, games are games, they're meant to be for your enjoyment, if you're gonna bitch and have a ragefest about a change in character or some shit then sell your fucking game console and just stop playing games forever. You guys suck the fun out of games.
Fuck you, goodnight.

Unsettling dreams
Posted 15 years agoI had another one of those unsettling dreams again. I try to forget them but I committed this one to memory because it was really disturbing. These dreams usually involve people I've met and they all end in tragedy, I won't mention names.
This person was on this site for a while and he/she, for some unknown reasons, closed their account and it was later revealed that he/she has taken his/her life, and I was the only one who was really upset about it. Friends and not even his/her mate was really upset. They sent their condolences but they weren't heartfelt, mine were. I don't understand this dream at all, when I woke up I felt so down in the dumps and sick.
I hate these dreams.

Just finished Dead Space
Posted 15 years agoI've just finished Dead Space, wow. *changes pants*
Now for a review:
The first time I heard about this game, I didn't know what to expect. I heard so many rumours about it and I saw a video of it once on Youtube and though, I have to try this game. So I eventually got the game and the moment I popped it in, I was hooked. I couldn't put this game down, it was just too much fun. It's a little short but damn it's worth it. When they say survival horror, they literally mean SURVIVAL HORROR.
The Good:
The gameplay is addictive
The sounds are fantastic
The graphics look great, even at a low screen resolution.
The puzzles aren't very hard to figure out.
The environments are dark and ominous.
The Bad:
The camera can be painful
The controls are broken(you can't remap them to certain parts of the keyboard)
The controls are a little stiff.
Mouselook is a little troublesome.
Glitches, not too serious, but still.
Final thought:
This game has a great reputation and it certainly lives up to it, even if the controls are broken.
Score: 92%
