okay...
WHO THE F*** OUT THERE KNEW THAT UNDERTAKER WAS GONNA HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS.
because I was rubbing my hands, waiting for this flashback to end, biding my time and feeling in my gut that the ONLY way that R!Ciel would still be "alive" is if Undertaker had something to do with it.
Speaking of the flashback, let me just say that the conviction OurCiel has in regards to taking over the responsibility and the name of the Phantomhive household is absolutely breathtaking and heartbreaking. Where there is fire there is often rebirth, and its very interesting how in this moment OurCiel attempts to "let go" of his own self in place of being reborn as the Head of the Phantomhive household (or in his perspective, his brother). I think it was even poetic how, had it been successful, he would have been the /only/ Phantomhive to rise from the ashes. Which is quite the origin story.
And maybe OurCiel has played out his life up to this point in this manner. He has carried the dissociation of knowing mentally he will /never/ be his brother, and yet carried at the same time this emotional and physical identity that he is. It seems the /only/ reason he sold his soul to Sebastian in the first place was to carry out a revenge for the death of his family... a revenge that was probably always fueled by the reminder of this dissociation. He needed Sebastian to be the Head of the Phantomhive household.
So then... if R!Ciel has "returned", what is the purpose of their contract? Could OurCiel's revenge still be hungered enough to fulfill the contract to its extent now that he has his "brother"? And more importantly- to OurCiel there was always a clear end game from the moment he made a contract with Sebastian... now that the game has changed completely does he see the same end game? Does he feel so confident about giving up his soul knowing his brother is "alive"?
But I think the biggest question in this moment is... who did OurCiel burn in that fire.
And I think that revelation is happening in this very moment. OurCiel is having a full blown out identity crisis. Even if R!Ciel is "back", OurCiel burned /someone/ in that fire. He walked away from /someone/. He's been fighting the memory of that /someone/ over and over again, as shown in the Green Witch Arc. OurCiel even made it a point to NEVER KNOW that someone's name. Because honestly- as far as in OurCiel's mind goes- that someone is /dead/ and not ever coming back. He has fully embraced becoming this lie that he is the Head of the Phantomhive estate... because from the get go he burned all of what he knew himself to be.
Though now that his brother is back... now that there is a valid challenge on the only identity he has.
If he's not the Head of the Phantomhive household....
Then who... is he?
I have a lot more stuff to talk about... mainly how Yana once again used a lot of foreshadowing to demonstrate how plausible "coming back from the dead" really was from the moment the idea of dolls were introduced. BUTTT maybe I'll save that for the next coming weeks. Undertaker as a character himself is a lot to unpack.
As for my comment question - What do you guys think of this chapter? How many of you thought that Undertaker had a role to play in this? Lastly, what do you think is going through OurCiel's mind in these moments?
