Today is repairing day. Again.
General | Posted 12 years agoBut this time, it's getting better.
The problem I have with the back-pinning is being solved, as I figured out what mistakes I've made in the first place.
I removed all the damaged pins, and finished filling up the holes to drill them again all nice and clean.
Enough with carving toothpicks ! ^^
The strings I found broken by its loop is now replaced. I even did a loop nearly perfect on the new string, by using my offhand.
Maybe I'm better with my offhand to do a work that needs extreme accuracy ?
Huhu...
Thanks to the strings I had removed, one of the intact string had to support a lot more pressure from the bridge.
It didn't made it.
Believe me, it's not really nice to have a string breaking in the middle of the night... ^^'
A wake-up call that sounds like thunder.
Now I'm waiting for the new strings to come, since I didn't have enough in stock to replace all of those who broke.
Actually, it's not so bad : I had plenty of time to keep on working on the quills, and I'm almost done with the harmonization.
I've also done the finishing touch to the jackrail - the plank that goes above the jacks to stop them from going too high - which means...
I CAN PLAY ACTUAL MUSIC WHILE WORKING ON THE INSTRUMENT ! ^^
And it feels good.

General | Posted 12 years agoYeah, pretty much.
I was working on the harpsichord, carving quills after quills, doing well and all when...
*Tziiiiiing*
One of the strings sounded strange all of a sudden. And when I say strange, I mean REALLY strange, as if the highest harmonics found themselves an infinite reverberation effect.
Harmonics don't do that, they're just vibrations you know.
So I opened the lid, in order to look at the string and find out what caused that.
The loop at the end of the string was broken.
I sighed from relief, I remember doing that.
No big deal after all : the loop is broken, it's the only one that broke so far, out of 114 other loops I've made for the whole harpsichord. I just have to change the string, easy, right ?
Then I looked at the other strings...
Several bridges pins were bent on the side, really bent.
Too much pressure caused by the backpinning on the bridge.
I made mistakes while doing this part, I had it coming. But still, it's annoying.
You know why ?
Because carving toothpicks is really hard.
I have to replace the damaged pins on the bridge, and redo some of the angles for the back ones, which means fill the little holes with carved toothpicks to repair the bridge before drilling it again.
I have to replace at least two other strings.
Meh.
I don't like carving toothpicks.

I have just received the new pieces I bought for my computer.
Going to install it now.
Hard Drive change and some more RAM.
With all that, I hope my ProTools will run faster.
Huhu ^^
