Today,  milku and I, out of boredom, went through a giant tub of my old artwork that was packed away in the back of my closet.
Now, it's no secret, Milku can draw 100x better then I can. But, she looked at this huge box, then looked at me, and said "Kutcha, there's more artwork in this box then all the art I have drawn in my entire life."
And we both asked; "Why haven't I improved? Why is my anatomy still shit, etc?"


And I thought about this. And thought. And thought.

I am probably one of the most creative people I know. Not saying this, to well, /brag/, but during my life this was my biggest escape method (and most effective) way to escape the shithole that is humanity. I created, drew and wrote about various fantasy worlds to keep my sanity. After countless years of trying to fit in as a child, I eventually realized, 'holy living fuck, I seriously don't give two shits what people think about me or anything I do."

Now, this might seem... uhh... pessimistic? or w/e. I don't know the word. Grim, maybe?

But when you think about it, WHY do people strive to be 'good' at their artwork? Why aren't people satisfied with simpler things? The art community now and days, at least on the internet, is all about improvement. "Oh, your anatomy needs work dear." or "Your coloring and shading could use a little practice." Which might be all well and true, but why must everyone strive for this... certain 'quality' of art? Not saying that everyone strives for photo realism, but something... 'nice' to look at.

People, I've noticed, have such a HIGH standard when it comes to digital (and traditional) artwork. No one wants to look at something that isn't immediately appealing to the eye.

Now both of these, no doubt, have some deep creative, 'meaning' to them. They are images created by two humans, with the intent of putting across an artistic idea.

Most people, *most* people, will judge these two based on their idea of "quality." One, obviously, has near photo realistic quality and is very pleasing to the eye, while the other, does not respond to the eye in the way most people have come to expect out of "artwork."

But they are both art, and in my eyes, are equal (and beautiful). Beauty, not in the way of 'effort' or attention to detail or etc, but the idea behind both of them. Both of the artists drew with the intent of meaning (well, one artist drew with the intent of the meaning from the commissioner, but still the same) and while one's meaning might be more obvious then the other, they're still there.

But despite both of them being equal when it comes to portraying an idea, most people would take the highly detailed and more eye pleasing picture.


Now don't leave bitching comments about how you don't judge art in this manner, but when it comes to it, most people do, subconsciously or not.

The way the human mind works is fascinating, in many many senses.
For example, our idea of beauty in the modern world is corrupted. We see people on the covers of magazines or on billboards (whom most of which are doctored in photoshop) and think to ourselves, wow, I wish I could look like that.
Our entire lives we are bombarded by this false idea of beauty, telling our children if they are fat or out of style, they won't be liked or loved, and through this lifelong process of brainwashing, we forget what true human beauty is. (and most people never remember what it is and end up very unhappy.)


Now, I believe the same thing is true when it comes to art.

I'm not saying that the people who create beautiful photo quality artwork don't deserve the respect they get, NO no.
Fuck, it takes years and years of dedication to get that skilled. I have endless respect for those people. ENDLESS.


But as a whole, people have seen these masterpieces and say hey, I wish I could draw like that. And so we put it upon ourselves to CONSTANTLY improve. And through this process, most people forget the initial idea behind art.

It's really not how it looks, but (for me, at least) it is how art makes you feel.
Those two pictures, how do they make you feel? Frightened? Disgusted?
These pictures exist to bring to the viewers an idea, or an emotion, and both do it very well.

They are both art.

And yet the masses continue to keep up this corrupted view of 'art'. Most people, don't deny it, would never even stop to think twice about the first image. It's not nice to look at. It's not eye pleasing. But, it is something to think about. Mx_Scade does a brilliant job explaining his idea in the description, but most people don't even want to bother with such a thing. They want pretty things to look at, and that's about it.


True, art has many many definitions, and all of them are correct. But through this process of saying "Hey, I want to improve upon what I have, and 'get' better." But is it really because they want to portray their ideas better, or is it because they want to fit with this ideal eye pleasing arty thing?


Now. I'll probably get a bunch of bitchy comments about this, and I can predict them.


My point is, people are so obsessed with the idea of eye pleasing art work, the ones that aren't meant to be pretty, aren't meant to be eye pleasing and only really there to portray an idea or emotion, are WIDELY overlooked and IGNORED.



What I'm saying here people, is that for ME. Art is more about the emotion and idea put across then the actual image on the page. If I can make you feel, or think, my job is done. Even if the thought is "What the fuck am I looking at, this is fucking weird/surreal." is the only thought you think before closing out of my submission, never to look at it again, I've done my job. I've gotten what I wanted. I don't give a rats ass if I create eye pleasing lines or colors or anatomy.

My art has always been an expression of the countless ideas I have running through my head daily, and instead of blabbering about them in some blog, I paint the words into an image and post it on FA for people to glance at.

And through this entire thinking session I've had about why I haven't improved the 10 or more years I've been drawing, is because, I've decided I can get across the ideas I want to get across with the level of 'quality' I'm at now.
